Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup - Curt

Today on our 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup, we are going to review and install the Curt Class 4, Two Inch Tube Receiver Hitch, Part Number 14001. Here is what our hitch is going to look like once installed. As you can see, there is minimal showing of our cross tube but it is a sturdy square cross tube design with a fully welded construction. Then our Class 4, 2 inch receiver tube has chain hold-downs on each side and it's a 2 inch by 2 inch opening with a 5/8 pinhole pre-drilled all the way through the receiver tube. The hitch itself is capable of up to 1000 pounds of tongue weight and 10,000 pound tow capacity. Next, we will give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for a new hitch such as ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most of the edge of the bumper is 3 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is 16 1/4 inches. We now go ahead and show you the minimum tools required for installing the hitch.

Here we use a 3/4 inch deep well socket, extension and ratchet, along with our torque wrench. Now let's go ahead and show you how to install the hitch. To begin our install, we need point out the attachment points. Now we are going to have a total of six attachment points, three on each side. These attachment points are pre-drilled holes in the frame by the manufacturer. Now each of these attachment point is going to get a 1/2 inch carriage bolt and block.

The carriage bolt will engage the block and down through the attachment point. Then once our hitch is in place, we will secure it with a flange nut. The only exception being here at the center attachment point. After we drop the carriage bolt and block down through the frame, the hitch will go up and they get sandwiched between a secondary spacer block and a flange nut. Now keep in mind each process we do here on the passenger side is going to get repeated identically on the driver's side. We are now ready to go ahead and put the hitch in place.

It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your hardware. We will install each fastener finger tight until we have them all in place. Now once we get all our hardware in place, we will go ahead and tighten it down. Now with all our fasteners tightened down, we will go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Just like that, our hitch is installed and we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the Curt Class 4, 2 Inch Receiver Tube Hitch, Part Number 14001 on our 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup.

The box was utterly destroyed by USPS but thanks to well thought out packaging the hitch was unscratched, as were the 7 pin connector, and other items I ordered with it. The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that the design leaves no room for error. The hitch is too close to the same width as the inside of the bumper mounts and since my frame has been well loved as a farm truck, it took considerable persuasion with a grinder to get it installed. If the cross member riveted into the frame where this mounts has any dents, you'll likely have the same issue. (1995 F-150, Std Cab, 8ft box, 4WD) 570220

Received the hitch 2 days after ordering with the free shipping. It arrived in perfect condition. It took about 45 minutes to install. The fit was close to perfect. We put this on my son's 1997 f250 HD and he was pulling with it immediately. Product price was great. Got it for less here at etrailer than I could anywhere else. 542270

Hitch arrived on time, excellent quality and value for the price paid. Installation video was not entirely accurate as there were supposed be predrilled holes in the frame that were not there so I had to have it installed. The shop that I used successfully drilled them out and completed the installation. 513387

Comments

According to the instructions, holes do indeed need to be drilled to install the hitch on on the Ford Bronco. I believe youre speaking of the video for the Dodge full-sized truck, which utilizes existing holes.

I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab with 6 foot bed. The Curt Class IV hitch installed in about 30 minutes and everything fit perfect. I didn't have to drill any holes. I spoke with Heather before I baught the hitch because I was concerned about my Westin Fey Diamondstep Rear Bumper being compatible with Curt Trailer Hitch receiver. She checked and it was compatible. Happy Camper. JK 211678

I can not say enough good things about my expierence with etrailer.com. I try to buy from brick and mortar stores as much as possible, but my local trailer store quoted me $465 for a 12,000 lb hitch. I bought a nicer hitch from etrailer, plus the wiring harness I haven’t been able to find anywhere else. It took me 10 minutes to find what I needed. They shipped it that day (For Free) and it was here in two days. Best shopping expierence I’ve ever had. 454188

This is the second CURT mfg. class 4 hitch that I've purchased from etrailer.com; each for two different trucks. The website is easy to navigate, the product arrived on time in a sensibly packaged box, and most of all they are made in the USA - which is something I take seriously. No room for improvement here, I'll be back for other items. 200296

All is well with the second hitch, Ive used it numerous times with no issues. The first one was on an older truck that I sold. Thank you again for selling American made products.

I ordered the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver on the Memorial Day weekend and it was delivered on Friday, the same week. I found the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver fit my 1980 Ford F150 Pickup without any problems. Other places I checked did not have Trailer Hitch Receivers for vehicles this old. It took a little over an hour to install. The extra time was needed to drill six 1/2" holes in the bottom flange of my truck frame. 42909

you say i received the product at 6:10 am but really it was closer to noon pacific time. i really enjoyed the tracking feature you offered i did not need to wait around a day in advance i new what day it would get here that was really cool. i was afraid to order your product one custermers reveiw said that the one he ordered did not fit and you guys would not help him fix the problem but i did and the one i ordered was a custum fit for my 2002 dodge 2500 it went on quicker then the old one came off, all the parts were there and i guess because it was a custum fit for my truck and i was replaceing a class III hitch that was alresdy on it i did not have to drill any holes i gave it a 4 out of 5 because it did not have a metal protective box mounted on it for the electrical plug receiver i had to cut off the the one on the old hitch and attach it to the bottom back bumper, i chose not to have it welded on the new hitch like it was on the old due to the nice weather proofing paint and the inside being sealed off to the elements. BE SURE TO CHECK THE PRODUCT COMPATIBILLITY FOR YOUR VEHICLE I.E. MID OR FULL SIZE, THANK YOU CURT! 14966

The hitch arrived in 3 days in great condition. Good packaging. My installation took a little longer than most I am sure. My bumper mounts have a "C" shaped cross section that covered the areas on both sides of the frame where toe rear most bolts needed to be installed. Had to remove the bumper. I have purchased several items from ETrailer over the years. All have been high quality and the prices can't be beat. I will always dream with etrailer when I need towing components. 348757

Patrick, I tried to install my hitch Sunday and found it was the wrong hitch. My frame on my 73 ford F250 is 34 inches wide the 14001 hitch that I orderd was to wide. My frame is about 31and a quarter wide on center, the 14001 is 36 inches wide on center. I got on your web site and started looking at reviews and found that I may need the 14082. I called the 800 # and talked to Wayne H, and he was very helpful, he called the manufacturer and called me back and said the 14082 is the one I need, it's for a 34 inch frame. So I orderd it and he is sending return info for the 14001. I would like to thank you and Wayne for all your help. I will let you know how the 14082 works out once I get it. Thank You Hammer 71367

It went in without a hitch (yeah, bad pun). The instructions were a little vague, and led me to believe there would be drilling involved. However (at least with my truck) that was not the case, so the install was a snap. I was able to install it by myself in about 30 minutes on my 2000 Dodge 1500. I used a trolley jack to hold it in position while I snugged up the six bolts. Be sure you have a set of deep sockets. 377734

First I shopped local shops to find the 14001 hitch no one had it and they all told me that they could order it and it would take appox 2 weeks. I checked online and found E-Trailer and called them direct they answered all of my questions precisely,so I went back online to see if there was anything elese extra that I wanted to order. I ordered the hitch,to my suprise it came earlier than what I was told. I installed the hitch in about a half hour it fit like a glove what a great hitch.Workmanship second to none. Customer service outstanding price fantastic.I even saved myself some money.I would definitely recommend anyone to purchase their products as I will for all of my trailer and hitch needs, To the staff of ETrailer "Great Job". 32256

I'm 75 years old and not getting around like I used to. The Curt class IV hitch aligned perfectly with frame existing holes. Center hole needed to be drilled, easy enough to do. The existing 3500 lb.bumper hitch was removed. Some wiring was attached to frame and needed to be relocated. My son stopped by to help with installation, but we found a floor jack could be used to position hitch without need for extra muscle. Once lifted, we used clamps to hold in place for hole enlargement and drilling. Looks like it will tow much more than truck is certified to pull 585596

This time I went through Preston in ordering and the hitch is now installed and I am delighted. I would still only advise customers to order with a live representative over the phone and not through the internet. This is only my opinion and the readers can take it or ignore it. 505941

Simple to install. Looks very well built. Exactly why I chose a curt hitch. Only thing is, I wish there had been a hitch available for a 7 pin trailer harness connector to mount on the hitch 504781

I have not used the hitch, so I can only review the installation and my initial impression. It was easy to install, I just had to drill 6 holes total. The spare tire needs to come down, but it fits back up there after the install. There's enough clearance between the hitch and the bumper that I could keep the ball hitch on as well. This receiver is rated for 10,000 lbs, but the info printed on it claims it goes up to 12,000 lbs (1200 tongue) with a weight distribution hitch. 488801

Quality of the unit is excellent, Ford Designers should have a boot put in their rear ends...I am very happy with the purchase (and love my 1993 Ford Bronco, despite lowering the tank to get at the screws easier because I didn't buy the fishing tool to make placing the bolts easier). Bottom line, get the fishing tool and this will be a good quick install, and you will be happy with the product. ...and etrailer is always a great place to get gear...they are my goto. 479829
