Video Transcript for Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch Installation - 1997 Ford F-350 - B&W

Today on our 1997 Ford F-350, we'll be installing the B and W Heavy Duty Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part #BWHDRH25198. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch. Such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the opening of the receiver to the ground is approximately 21 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole, to the outermost edge of the bumper on this vehicle is approximately 11 inches. Note that this vehicle does have an aftermarket style bumper installed. Let's go ahead and install our hitch. Let's first begin by pointing out our attachment points. There's a total of six locations that will mount the hitch to the frame of the vehicle.

On this particular vehicle, four of the holes are existing holes and two of the holes, one on each side, will need to be drilled out. Since our frame is 37 and a half inches wide, we'll be placing the mounting tabs towards the outside on the side plates. This here is how our side plate would be mounted. Now that we know we need to put the ear space on the outside, we'll go ahead and attach our side plates to the center section of the hitch. We'll do this by using half inch by inch and a half long hex bolts, half in lock washers and half inch hex nuts. Let's go ahead a put our hitch together. Now that all of our hardware is installed, we'll go ahead and snug it up a little, but don't fully tighten it at this time. Let's go ahead and point out the hardware that we'll be using for the two forward as well as the two rear most mounting locations.

We'll be using a half inch by two inch hex bolt, an inch and a quarter round hole spacer block and on the underside, we'll be using a one inch round hole spacer block, a half inch block washer and a half inch hex nut. Let's go ahead and show you how it'll look. Now let's go ahead and put our half inch hex bolt and round hole spacer block in the forward and rear most mounting locations. Next we'll go ahead and install our hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. With the hitch raised up into position, we'll go ahead and line it up over the front and rear most mounting location. We'll then take our one inch round hole spacer block, slide it over the bolt, followed by the half inch lock washer and finally the half inch hex nut.

Go ahead and just put them on loosely for now. Now that we have our hitch up on the frame and it's tightened down enough to hold it in place, we've made sure that it's centered. We're going to have to drill out our center hole on each of the two side plates. We'll go ahead and begin here with a pilot bit and then step up to our half inch drill bit. The hardware that we're going to use for the two center locations is a half inch by two inch hex bolt, an inch and a quarter round hole spacer block that'll go over the hex bolt and come in from the top side, then in between the frame and the hitch, we'll install a large round hole spacer block. Then on the underside, we'll put our one inch round hole spacer block, half inch lock washer and a half inch hex nut. Now we'll go ahead and we'll tighten down the hardware that secures the side plates to the frame. Once we have all six of these locations tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque them to the manufacturers specification. Before tightening down the center section to each of the two side plates, you want to make sure that the bottom and the rear most edge are even.

If for some reason the center section is not even with the bottom and the back section, you'll need to loosen up the bolts that attach the center section to the side plates and move it to the appropriate position. Now that we're sure that the center section is lined up on the bottom and the back side, we'll go ahead and tighten down these eight bolts and then torque them to the manufacturers specification. That will do it for our installation of the B and W Heavy Duty Trailer Hitch Receiver, Part #BWHDRH25198 on our 1997 Ford F-350. .

High quality product and easy to install. I bolted up to some of the holes already aligned and marked the rest for a perfect fit. Drilling was hardest part. Make sure you have good drill bits. 491774

This hitch seems well made. I just installed it today on a 1992 Ford F350 that has a cummins 6BT with 4-inch exhaust. Only the rear most holes lined up. The other 2 pre-existing holes on each side were from a much smaller hitch. Thus I had to drill 4 holes total. I also worked alone, so I did as most other reviewers and assembled the hitch as instructed, then used a floor jack to raise it up to the two rear bolts and installed the spacer, washer, nut. Then used c-clamps to hold rear tabs while I readjusted the floor jack. Using a 36-inch piece of 4x4, I supported the rear of the hitch with the floor jack. This allowed me to remove the c-clamps, so I could drill the rear holes. Once I had the rear holes hardware installed, I could drop the jack and move it out of the way to work on middle holes. This is why I mention the exhaust on the truck. The bracket holding the exhaust and the large diameter of the exhaust were both in the way of drilling the middle hole on the passenger side. When I unbolted the exhaust bracket, there was just enough play in the exhaust pipe that I was able to have my wife pull it aside while I drilled the hole and installed hardware. All in all it took 2-hours. Now the down side, my hitch was packed only in an etrailer.com box and all hardware was in clear ziplock bags. The bags had torn open in shipment and some lock washers were missing and a spacer block was missing. Etrailer.com support is great and replacements are on the way, but I cannot finish the install and torque everything down until the remaining hardware comes. Minor issue and not a reflection of the quality of the product. 237269

This thing is stout! I had to drill all 6 holes, using a small pilot bit, then a 1/2". I installed myself which wasn't terribly difficult. I used a hydraulic jack to hold the hitch in place to mark the locations to drill. Then I lowered the hitch, drilled holes, and again used the jack to hold the hitch in place while installing the bolts. I have a 6" drop bumper. I initially thought this would be too low, but its perfect for my application. 225143

2018 Ford F-350 Super Duty

The B&W hitch was installed on a 1997 F350 in Feb 2018. The installation was not as easy as described, four holes had to be drilled in the frame. For some reason the mounting holes had not been drilled out by Ford, who knows this may have been one of the last 97 F350 built. The hitch has worked great with no problems. I've pulled an RV over 10k miles without a hiccup along with utility trailers, great quality hitch. etrailer delivered the hitch in just a few days from ordering and their customer service is wonderful. I would definitely purchase this hitch again. 606419

Installed on a 2wd 1993 Ford F-350 dually. I'd been looking for a hitch that would fit without requiring me to modify or replace my deep drop bumper. This B&W hitch worked perfectly. I have ordered from Etrailer several times and the products always arrive before the scheduled delivery date. The hitch was well packaged and in perfect condition, all the needed assembly parts were in the box along with easy to read and follow directions. The truck frame was not pre-drilled for a hitch so I bought new drill bits, charged up the big drill and 2 hours later we're ready to tow. 593901

Very nice hitch. Installed it on my 91 f350 dually crew cab. Some drilling involved but not difficult with a good drill and bits. Have pulled my 28ft, 7000lb travel trailer with no trouble. Hauled my 22ft flatbed trailer with an extended cab truck on it, handled it fine. Excellent hitch, great price too. Thanks etrailer! 360204

Great people at e trailer. Very helpful and actually seem to like what they do and understand their products and the applications. The B&W was the perfect answer for my needs. It fit (after the normal and expected minor bumper mods) great. Don't expect an installation like the 10 min video. More like 2 days for me. But most of the time and knuckle busting was due to the fact that my old drop bumper w/ 10K ball hitch had to be completely dismantled and was (after 20 yrs of salt roads) mostly a grinder, torch, hammer nightmare. Don't count on using existing frame holes either. Then imagine drilling 6 pilot holes, followed by 6 1/2 holes in 1/4 inch steel frame rails while laying on your back working over head. End result is worth it though, just that knowing what I know now, maybe it would be a job I'd farm out next time. BTW, my truck is 97 f250 HD w/ a 10" laverne drop bumper/hitch. 264805

Received this today 01-19-16 after ordering last Thursday I believe. Was able to install in around an hour, and only had to drill two 1/2" holes for the mounting brackets. Was very easy to install, even with just one person. I'm writing this review the night of the install, so I haven't yet had a chance to use it just yet, but I'm sure I will not be disappointed, I've have B&W hitches and receivers in the past and have always had an excellent experience. I highly recommend this product! 235846

1996 Ford F-250 and F-350

After receiving the hitch and reviewing the instructions, I knew the hitch would be too heavy to manage by myself. After drilling all the holes, I loosely mounted each side on each frame rail. This made it easy to mount the center section. Once in place, I tighten all the bolts. The receiver ended up a little lower than expected but the bumper hid most of the hitch. I am very happy how it turned out. 209531

Cab and chassis models will have a more narrow frame width and are used to make service trucks and emergency vehicles. The regular pick-up models will have a frame width of 37-1/4 inches measured from the outside of one frame rail to the outside of the other frame rail. If you have a regular pick-up model and...

  • Distance From Frame Mounting Surface to Top of Hitch Opening on BWHDRH25122 and BWHDRH25198
  • The # BWHDRH25122 measures 5 inches from the frame to the top of the hitch receiver. The # BWHDRH25198 measures 7-3/8 inches from the frame to the top of the receiver.

  • Trailer Hitch for a 1994 Ford F-250 with Deep Drop Cowboy Bumper and 10,000 Pound Trailer
  • Since your 1994 Ford F-250 has a deep drop (Cowboy) bumper you will need to look at some different hitches. I recommend the B&W hitch # BWHDRH25198 because the other hitches max out at 10,000 pounds when using weight distribution whereas the B&W tops out at 16,000 pounds with weight distribution. Provided the custom Cowboy bumper drops down as far as the optional factory deep drop bumper this is the ideal hitch for your truck.

  • Recommended Heavy Duty Trailer Hitch for a Winnebago Class C On Ford E-Series Chassis
  • I do have an option for you but we do not offer a custom fit trailer hitch for the Ford E-Series Cab & Chassis therefore the B&W Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch Receiver part # BWHDRH25198 will not work as it is actually for the Ford F-Series Cab & Chassis. That said, the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 41991-16 has the weight capacity you need and it can be made to fit your Ford E-Series Cab & Chassis as it is universal/adjustable.

  • Class V Trailer Hitch for 1997 Ford F-350 Truck
  • There are a couple of great options for a Class V hitch for your 1997 Ford F-350 truck, which will depend on if you have a standard bumper or a deep drop bumper. If you have a deep drop bumper the best option is the B&W Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch Receiver - Class V # BWHDRH25198 which is made to fit your '97 F-350 and has a 16,000 lb towing capacity and 1,600 lb tongue weight capacity. I have added a link to a video install we did of this hitch on a '97 F-350 with a deep drop bumper as...

  • Towing Package and B&W Class V Trailer Hitch Fit for a 1977 Ford F-350
  • Yes, the B&W Class V Trailer Hitch, # BWHDRH25198, will install on a 1977 Ford F-350, but it was designed for models with a 10 inch deep drop step bumper. The receiver sits lower to allow room for the deep drop bumper. If you have the factory bumper, then you will want part # BWHDRH25122. You will also want to note that the spare tire will have to be lowered to complete the installation. It can be reinstalled, but it will likely have to be re-positioned slightly forward of the hitch....

  • Availability of B&W Class V Trailer Hitch for 2000 Chevy C/K 3500 Series Pickup Truck
  • We do offer a B&W hitch for your 2000 Chevy C/K Series truck. Due to the frame width you mention, you'd want to use the B&W Class V hitch, part # BWHDRH25124 which is designed for pickup trucks. The B&W Class V receiver hitch you referenced, part # BWHDRH25198 is for Cab and Chassis trucks with a 34 inch wide frame (measured outside to outside) only, so it wouldn't fit your truck.

  • Class V Hitch for 1989 Ford F-250 4WD with Auxiliary Fuel Tank
  • If your 1989 Ford F-250 4WD with heavy-duty towing package has a deep-drop type bumper then the only option in a 2-inch Class V hitch is the B&W # BWHDRH25198 which DOES require you to adjust the positioning of the spare tire mount. The other hitches you referenced require this too. If you happen to have a standard or step bumper the Class V hitch fits are different, as shown on the linked page. My contact at Draw-Tite advised that their Class V hitch # DT45502 will not require you to...

  • Hitch Compatibility on 1986 Chevrolet C/K Series Short-Bed Pickup
  • For your 1986 Chevrolet C/K Series pickup with 6-foot bed and step bumper we have no B&W hitch fits confirmed. Hitch # BWHDRH25198 fits only the version of your truck that has the deep drop bumper. The hitch options that do fit your truck are shown on the linked page and these come from Curt and Draw-Tite. The Curt Class III hitch # 13028 does fit your truck and allows re-installation of the full-size spare in most instances (some cases will require minor re-positioning of the spare). However,...

  • Recommended 2 Inch Trailer Hitch for a 1994 Ford F-150 Lightning with Deep Drop Bumper
  • I recommend the B&W 2 Inch Trailer Hitch # BWHDRH25198 for your 1994 Ford F-150 Lightning with Deep Drop Bumper, because of the increased weight capacity and low cost compared to the other hitches offered for your vehicle. This hitch is also the most popular among our customers with your similar vehicle. If you need wiring for your vehicle I recommend the T-One wiring harness # 118316 for a 4-way connector. If you would like to adapt this connector to a 7-way I recommend the # ETBC7. I...
