Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 1986 Chevrolet C/K Series Pickup - B&W

Today on our 1986 Chevrolet Silverado, we'll be taking a look at and installing the B&W Heavy-Duty Class 5 Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number BWHDRH25122. Here's what our hitch is going to look like once it's installed on the back of our vehicle. Now, keep in mind, if your vehicle has a back bumper or a drop bumper or any of those other styles, then it may look a little bit different than if it didn't have a bumper at all like this one doesn't It's going to have a fully-welded construction with an easy bolt on application with minor modifications to this one, but there's going to be multiple different variations to this and the mounting, depending on your vehicle that you're going to be placing it on. With this one we did have to drill out in the middle hole just a little bit to waller out one of our holes a little bit. You're going to have your extremely sturdy, Class 5 hitch here that's going to be fully-welded with those quarter inch, plate steel chain tie-downs on either side and 2 inch by 2 inch receiver too, with that 5/8's inch pin hole going straight through. Another great feature about this is it's going to have that 1600 pound tongue weight capacity and 16,000 pound gross vehicle trailer weight towing capacity. On side over here, you're also going to get your bracket to mount up your wiring harness if you already have one.

Whether that be your 7 way, 4 pull, whatever kind of wiring you're going to be running to this, or running from it, for that matter. You don't have to use a bracket, but it's supplied in case you want it. It is also going to have that welded on bracket here on the frame if you choose to use that one instead. Now, for your older vehicles, this is going to be an essential part. You're going to have that relocation for your spare tire rod and assembly. Now, ours isn't all the way tightened down, but if we tightened that down the rest of the way, it's going to hold up just fine and keep a nice, sturdy grip on that spare tire underneath the back end of our vehicle. Now, we'll go ahead and give you a few measurements to help you in selecting from hitch accessories such as ball mounts, bike racks, or cargo carriers.

From the top of the receiver tube to the ground, it's going to be about 17 and 1/2 inches. From the center of the pinhole to the outer-most edge of the bumper, it's going to be about 2 and 1/2 inches. Now, lets go ahead and see how it's installed. In here we have our outer brackets in place on our receiver tube itself. We're going to go ahead and assemble everything and get it up onto the vehicle. We'll take our half inch by inch-and-a-half bolts and slide them through the outside of the receiver tube.

Get the holes lined up and get them in place. We'll side our other tube bolts through the main receiver tube, once we line up the holes. Then, we'll place our lock washer and hex nut on the back side. Once we have it started, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. We'll use a 3/4 inch socket to do so. Now we're going to go ahead and drop some of the hardware into the frame.

We're going to be placing the 2, the outermost and innermost brackets, through the top side, going through the bigger of the 2 square blocks. Now, notice there is going to be 3 of your spacer blocks, we're going to set these ones off to the side and we're just going to be using these ones. Going through and then this one here as well as the lock washer and nut will be coming up from the bottom side. Go ahead and drop these bigger ones into the frame with our 2 bolts. Now, on earlier model vehicles like this one, it's going to be easier to remove the spare tire from the vehicle before we go ahead and get started. Place the block and then the bolt. It should look like so, dropping it through that big slot at the back. Now, the other one is going to go just in front of the rear leaf support and drop in the 1/2 inch hole. Now, this other one is actually going to be going the reverse direction up through this hole here. Now, we're going to go ahead and put our hitch up into place over those outer bolts. Now, you may need a second set of hands to help you hold it up into place. Once you have your hitch up into place, take your small locking block, place it over, and then your lock washer. We'll go ahead and thread on our hex nut just to where it relieves the pressure and then we can go head and put our block, lock washer, and hex nut on the other side. Now, on these back ones, we'll go ahead and place in our block, lock washer, and then our nut. We'll do the same thing on this side and then we're ready to do our middle ones. Now, for this particular application, we do have some holes on either side, but we're going to have to make this one just a little bit bigger by drilling that 1/2 inch hole out here in the center and then passing our bolt up through. Now, make sure before you go ahead and drill out your holes, that you have your hitch aligned in the center of your vehicle. Now that we've got our hole drilled out, using that hitch as a template, go ahead and place our locking block over, place our bolt up through, then we'll place our big block over the top, lock washer, and our hex nut. We'll go ahead and repeat that same process on the other side. We'll go ahead and tighten our bolts to our frame first, and then we'll move over to that center section of the receiver tube. Next, we're going to go ahead and torque our bolts on our frame to those side plates to manufacturer specifications. Keep in mind, everything we do here on the passenger side is going to be repeated on the driver's side from this point forward. Now, we'll go ahead and tighten down our center bracket and all of our bolts here and then torque them to manufacturer specifications. Now that we're done, put the ones connecting the side plates to the frame. Now that we've got everything torqued down and our hitch is in the place where we want it, we can go ahead and attach our trailer wiring bracket to the back plate that's provided with our kit. We'll just take a 10 millimeter socket, attach our 2 screws that are provided. We'll get them started and then we'll tighten them down. Another nice thing about this kit is it's also going to provide you with that relocation bracket for your spare tire. We'll go ahead and place our bolt through our bracket and our spare tire bolt as well. Now, it is a little bent out of shape. You could always bend that back if you so choose. We'll go ahead and place it in the hole and then place our bracket on the back side and tighten it down. That will do it for the review and installation of the B&W Heavy-Duty Custom-Fit Class 5 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number BWHDRH25122, on our 1986 Chevrolet Silverado.

Great hitch, I didn’t even have to drill one hole in the frame on my 1988 GMC v3500, it bolted right in. The receiver tucked under the bumper very good The only thing I didn’t like was the trailer wiring plug bracket because it didn’t accommodate the new style 7-way and 4-way plug that come on the new Chevy trucks 584581

I just got this hitch today in the mail, it's awesome! Extremely well built and sturdy and the etrailer box kept it safe no dings or dents even. On a regular Chevy truck it will fit perfectly and installation is very straightforward but I would recommend having a friend help hold it while you get two bolts started. I installed it on a 85 Chevy k30 m1008 military truck. On these trucks people have problems with the shackle mounts fitting with a hitch and this one is no different. Some modifications will be needed to the shackle mounts, or the shackle mounts can be removed. 497538

1 year later and this hitch is everything I said it was in the first review. The powder coating is still in great shape although this truck does not see Ohios lovely salted winter roads.

Very good quality American made item. It fit my 1968 Ford F-100 perfect. It sits right below my new Fey step bumper and I can't even see it except for the square receiver hole. 130202

This is a really nice, really heavy duty hitch. It also works with other brands of vehicles so if one wanted to could take it off before selling and reuse. (My truck is a 1988 F250) Installation was very straight forward, basically get a helper, hold hitch up to frame, mark bolt holes with pen or starter punch, and then drill consecutively larger holes till you get to 1/2 inch. Bolt up, torque, and you are off to the races. I did not remove the spare tire but wish I had. It made holding the top of the bolts very difficult. Save time and remove the spare tire as your first step.! 555572

This hitch part # BWHDRH25122 is a custom fit for the 1988 F250. It it still a good idea to use the fit guide and make sure it will fit the next truck. It is not a custom fit for every vehicle.

This is the third hitch I have purchased. Not because they are bad but because they are GREAT! I have three 78-87 era Chevrolet Military trucks, M1008 (2) and a M1028. I pull a lot of stuff around and after the first hitch and its performance I decided to put the same hitch on all three! Highly recommend this hitch and etrailer.com. 267566

I received the hitch receiver without any shipping damage and all of the hardware was included for the installation. The information etrailer has about the part on their website was very useful in making a decision as to which hitch was best for me. I was able to install the hitch on my 1982 Chevrolet longbed pickup by myself, laying on the ground under the truck without raising the truck off the ground. It was a little challenging for me but I only had to drill one hole for the spare tire carrier bracket for the rear hanger that had to be relocated as stated in the installation instructions. I also had to remove the left and right side bumper support brackets as also mentioned was required in the installation instructions. Didn’t want to do that but the step bumper is still bolted to the frame by other brackets that support it fine. I am very pleased overall with this class V receiver hitch and would recommend it. It is just what I needed and wanted. 569501

I ordered this hitch for my 84 Chevy D30 military truck. After a few modifications to the existing mounting brackets for the tow hooks and the rear bumper I installed the new hitch assembley. Make sure you loose install all bolts first before tightening. Tighten new hitch assembly last. One of the most difficult parts is getting the Pindel hitch bolts lined up. I would suggest a good tapered line up bar. 494426

Product is well built and worked well. Not sure if we ordered the wrong unit or not but we had to drill new holes in the frame to make it work and lower the fuel tank to get to the nuts and bolts installed to be able to tighten them. A little extra work but not a problem that we couldn't resolve. 691762

I ordered this for my sons 1986 Chevy K20 pickup. My son got home early one day and couldn't wait till I got home to get started. By the time I arrived home he had the entire hitch installed. He read the instructions, pulled out all the tools, used my motorcycle lift to help hoist the hitch in place while he attached all the bolts and boom, it was done. I read over all the instructions, checked his work and it was perfect. The fit is perfect and is flawless, the finish of the product is great and looks durable too. 678874

Outstanding product from B&W. I installed this receiver on a 1985 K10, I had to drill the frame of the truck for the middle hole but not a big deal. Fit great otherwise, easy to install and ordering and delivery of product was spot on, would have received 5 stars if I didn't have to drill. 640497

THE WEBSITE AND ALL WAS GOOD. THE PRODUCT WAS GREAT AND CAME WHEN IT SHOULD. AS FAR AS IT BEING A CUSTOME FIT WAS A WHOLE DIFFRENT SITUATION. IT WAS A MOJOR PAIN IN THE AXX TO INSTAL. OVERAL I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH EVERYTHING ELSE 594197

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because two holes - one on each side - were off by a half hole diameter. No problem, I made the holes a little bigger with my cutting torch, but those who don't have that luxury may need to pay a shop for 10 minutes of labor. Sturdy and looks good. 590353

After having a previous popular name brand (Chinese made) hitch literally fail, I decided to buy the strongest hitch I could find. B&W is an American company and their products are made in the USA with exceptional materials. My B&W hitch is on my 1 ton dually that regularly tows 10,000 lbs and I have seen zero issues such as cracked welds or bending that my previous hitch experienced. B&W has this hitch rated at 16,000lbs so I am extremely comfortable with the loads I pull. I have full confidence in B&W whether I'm towing a couple pallets of concrete to a jobsite or my classic cars to a show. I expect this to be the last hitch I buy for my truck. Also, etrailer has the best pricing I found along with tech support that cannot be matched. 582024

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Which B and W Trailer Hitch for 1984 Dodge Ram 250 Custom
  • For your 1984 Dodge Ram 250 custom the correct B and W trailer hitch comes down to the style of bumper you have. The part # BWHDRH25122 fits a standard size bumper which looks like an average truck bumper and drops down 2-3/4 inches from truck frame to hitch crosstube. The # BWHDRH25198 instead fits if you have a deep drop bumper which looks taller than a normal one. It drops down 5-1/8 inches from where it attaches to the truck frame to the hitch crosstube. • Highest Rated Trailer Hitch for 1984 Chevy K10 Short Bed with Step Bumper
  • We do have trailer hitches available for your 1984 Chevy K10, however the B&W Class V Trailer Hitch Receiver # BWHDRH25122 that you referenced is only a fit for the long bed model of your truck and will not fit your short bed K10. The highest rated hitch we have available for your Chevy K10 with the short bed and factory step bumper is the Curt Class IV # C14082. The hitch will work perfectly as long as your truck has a 34 inch frame width (from outside to outside). This custom hitch...

  • Mounting Hole Spacing of B&W Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch Reciver # BWHDRH25122
  • It looks like you're asking about the B&W Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # BWHDRH25122, for your 1996 Ford F-150. You didn't say exactly which dimensions you're looking for but I went out to the warehouse and measured the mounting hole spacing. If there's another measurement you'd like just let me know what it is. From center on center the mounting holes towards the front of the truck to the center holes is about 11-3/8 inches. From the center hole to the hole nearest the...

  • Dimensions of Bracket Holes on Curt and B&W Class V Trailer Hitches
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled Curt Class V Trailer Hitch # C15300 and took some measurements for you. From the front bolt hole to the rivet (center to center) is 1-5/16 inches. From the rivet to the rear bolt hole is 7-7/8 inches and the overall measurement is 9-3/16 inches. I have included a picture of the hitch showing these measurements for your reference. I called my contact at B&W and she gave me the following measurements of their Class V Trailer Hitch # BWHDRH25122. From...

  • Side to Side Measurements for B&W Class V Trailer Hitch # BWHDRH25122
  • B&W hitch # BWHDRH25122 is designed to fit many trucks including the 1967 Ford F-350 as long as it has (or had) a stock factory bumper. Most of the trucks of that era had a 34 inch frame width which this hitch will fit. But to answer your question the distance between the side plates is 33-3/8 inches and the hole center to hole center distance is 36 inches. I measured them myself. If your frame width is the more uncommon 37-1/2 inch width then I recommend Curt hitch # C15511 which is...

  • Recommendation for a Class III or IV Trailer Hitch to fit a 1986 Chevrolet K-20 Pickup
  • For you 1986 Chevrolet K20 pickup truck, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class III Trailer Hitch, # 75034. The Draw-Tite hitch will fit both 6 and 8 foot beds with the standard or step bumper. The hitch is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver opening. The hitch has a Gross Towing Weight of 5,000 lbs and a Tongue Weight rating of 500 lbs. If you are installing this hitch on the 6 foot bed you will need to also order 6 of # 01077-011 3/8 inch spacer blocks. If you have the 8...

  • How Does B&W Trailer Hitch Mount to a 1975 Chevy 1-Ton Dually Pickup Truck
  • On B&W trailer hitch # BWHDRH25122 the mounting brackets are oriented the same for all applications. The tabs point in but attach to the bottoms of the frame rails. The customer submitting photo appears to have some other component installed. The upper brackets in that picture are not part of the hitch assembly. They appear to be bumper brackets. Once installed the receiver should be right under the bottom of the bumper of very close especially since you have a stock bumper on your 1975...

  • Hitch Recommendation to Fit Frame Width of 34 inches
  • Since you have a standard cab and chassis frame dimension on your shuttle bus we have the B and W Hitch part # BWHDRH25122 which will have mounting brackets that are spaced properly. It drops a bit more than 2 inches though. It's actually 5 inches down but should still work well. You'll probably have to drill the frame of your vehicle to get the hitch to bolt up though.

  • Class V Trailer Hitch for 1973 Ford F-350 with 34 Inch Frame
  • I checked with B&W and the Class V B&W Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch # BWHDRH25122 is a confirmed fit for the 34 inch frame on your 1973 Ford F-350 that has a 10 inch step bumper. The only thing you may need to do is remove or modify the spare tire carrier (if your truck has one) in order to ensure there is not interference with the hitch. I have added a link to the installation instructions of this hitch for you to check out as well.

  • Would the B and W Hitch part # BWHDRH25122 Fit Truck with 34 inch Wide Trailer Frame
  • 34 inch frame widths are pretty common cab and chassis trucks. The B and W Hitch part # BWHDRH25122 that you referenced is designed to fit cab and chassis trucks with a 34 inch width measured from outside to outside on trailer frames. If you measured your truck frame and it measures 34 inches from outside to outside the mounting brackets of the part # BWHDRH25122 would be positioned correctly. You most likely would need to drill holes in the frame to get the hitch to bolt up.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 1970 Ford F-100 Styleside with Standard Bumper
  • Modification and/or relocation of the spare tire mounting bracket is going to be a possibility for any of the trailer hitches for your 1970 Ford F-100 styleside with standard bumper. The spare would have to be positioned further forward on the vehicle if it has to be moved at all. The only way to know for sure is to begin the installation process. There are no specific instructions if the spare does have to move. The most popular hitch option for your truck is # BWHDRH25122. I have included...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 1997 Ford F-250/F-350 Cab and Chassis Model
  • For 1997 a cab and chassis model would have an outside to outside frame width of 34 inches. If that is the case you can use # 13028 which is for the cab and chassis models. Cab and chassis hitches for the 1997 F-250 or F-350 appear in the same list as the regular pickup models so that is probably why you didn't see it. We also have hitch # C14082 for the cab and chassis models. The difference between these hitches is the capacity. Hitch # 13028 is rated for 600 pounds tongue weight and...
