Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan we're going to be installing the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver, part number 75119. Now here's what or hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you chose some accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 4". From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 12-1/2". Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. Now this is a standard wheel base Grand Caravan.

Let's go ahead and point out the first two bolts that we'll be removing. It will be this bolt right here on the driver side. We'll go ahead and remove this bolt over here on the passenger side as well. Here's the bolt that we took out. Now this right here is what we're going to be threading back in to this location.

We'll need to thread it all the way in so that this lip right here is bottomed out here on the frame. We'll go ahead and repeat this same process on both the driver and the passenger side at this location. Now to thread the stud in it may help out if you put a little bit of spray lubricant. It helps the stud thread in a little bit easier, especially if it's a little rusty underneath your vehicle where you're working. We'll go ahead and take our stud here and we'll thread it into position. Now depending on how tight the threads are or if they're really rusty you may need to use a pair of channel locks or pliers to help you tighten down the stud.

Want to make sure you stay on this little lip here so you don't damage any threads. Now that we've got that snugged down we'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver side. Next we'll need to remove this bolt here on the driver side as well as this bolt here over on the passenger side. Again, if you put a little bit of spray lubricant in the threads it will help the new bolts go in just a little bit easier. Now because this vehicle is a 2003 our third mounting location on each side the hole has already been drilled in the frame. It will be this hole right here on the passenger side.

Now for the forward mounting location we're going to need to put our carriage bolt as well as our square hole spacer block into the vehicle's frame. To do that we use a fish wire or a bolt leader. We're going to use this hole right here to feed our hardware in and pull it into place. Now when you put the carriage bolt up there it just quite doesn't fit through the hole so we're going to use either a round file on our drill or just a regular hand file and just take out a little bit of metal to allow the carriage bolt to slip into position. You can either take just a regular file or in our case we're going to use a round file on our drill. We'll be able to get it up in there now. Next we'll go ahead and take our coiled end of the fish wire, feed it through the mounting location, pull it out the access hole. We'll then take the square hole spacer block, feed it on first, followed by the carriage bolt. Push it all up into the vehicle's frame and pull it out at the mounting location. Go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver side. Now for the middle mounting location we'll be using this round hole spacer block, a locker washer, and a hex nut. Now for this middle mounting location it will be the same hardware used on both the driver and the passenger side. For the rear mounting location we'll be reusing one of the factory bolts that we removed. Again, this will be the same for both the driver and the passenger side. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. We'll go ahead and install the rear mounting location first just hand tight. Now that we have both of those in, the hitch is supported and we can go ahead and put the remaining hardware in place. Go ahead and repeat that same process over on the passenger side. Now with all of our hardware just hand tight we'll go ahead and make sure that the hitch is centered in the vehicle where we want it so we can go ahead and tighten all the hardware down and then torque it to the manufacturer's specification. That will do it for the installation of the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver, part number 75119, on our 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. .

We ordered the hidden hitch for "Goldy," our 2001 Chrysler Town and Country Conversion (the extended roof with wood interior, mood lighting video, video game and audio inputs and outputs galore, TV, DVD etc.) minivan. We ordered the hitch and it was here in a couple days! My Father-In-Law and I put it on together. We only had basic cheap hand tools and a pair of metal car ramps. From backing "Goldy" up onto the ramps to pulling her back down complete was just over two hours, and that included a lunch break in between--thanks to the excellent videos that have. The only part that gave us a little trouble was fishing the plates and bolts to the rear holes. In my opinion, the fish cables should have been four to six inches longer. They worked, but it was a little trying. Everything else was SIMPLE, fast and pretty easy. We DID remove the rear bumper to try to see better, but it was not necessary, as it only half-way helped. We will order from again and again in the future for all of our towing needs. Next up--the wiring harness. We'll probably order it on Monday (today is Saturday) and have it arrive and installed way way before the weekend. Liz Lee Media 38694

Couldn't ask for better I am very pleased with this hitch - it really is hidden on my 2000 Grand Caravan, and it is easy to reach the receiver and pin hole. I found the video showing the installation to be invaluable. My only caveat is that the instructions said nothing about the fact that I had to drill the forward most bolt hole on both sides for this Class III hitch, but I would not have had that problem with the Class II. I probably still would have purchased the Class III, but some might not, so it would help to be up front about it. I don't think this is an issue with later models, as the third hole is factory installed. Also, I found the "20 minutes" of estimated installation time to be a bit optimistic. Perhaps a pro could do it that quickly on a lift, but I think an hour or 90 minutes might be more realistic for the average guy. Still, that is REALLY quick and very easy. The wire bolt puller/fish tape they give you worked like a charm for me. I would also advise getting or borrowing a calibrated torque wrench to ensure you have the required torque. That is called out in the written instructions, but not on the video, and it is an important precaution to take. Overall, I am very happy with this hitch and would recommend it to anyone. 3224

Excellent hitch I just installed the hitch today. I ordered the hitch on the phone and received it 2 days later. The hitch is very good quality and everything was just as advertised. It took me about 3 hours from start to finish but most of the time was preparing to mount the hitch. I did not have any access point on the frame, so I had to enlarge one of the oval holes on each side by filing them, (a small grinding wheel on a drill would be much better). Then I could not get the existing bumper bolts out with a hand socket,(it takes an 18mm metric). I had to borrow an impact wrench from a neighbor and keep spraying PB Blaster on the bolts and running them in and out until I finally was able to remove them. Once I had everything ready it took less than 30 minutes to insert the bolts, lift up the hitch and attach it to the van. The hitch fit perfectly with all of the holes lining up and looks really good on the van. The only thing that shows is the receiver. I would highly recommend this hitch 1830

Good unit-needs more hardware My '00 Grand Voyager had the rearmost bolts (to be reused) rusted. PB blaster and heat did not prevent me from busting the weld nuts. Getting a shop to cut of wiht a torque wasn't a problem. But I had to wait for the plant to send me 2 more bolts, nuts, plates, washers to fish into place. Since any van that will use this hitch will likely have the same problem ('96-'04 vans), kit should come with 6 sets of fasteners. But the instructions are great, fish lines worked perfectly. Customer service put me in direct contact with the plant, and they helped me quickly. Don't be afraid of drilling holes. Just get the hitch in place in the existing holes, use a center punch, drill 1/4" starter, then finish with 1/2". Use sharp drill bits and wear gloves and goggles. 2278

The hitch arrived very quickly. The most difficult part of the project was removing one of the bolts attaching the bumper. I sprayed a penetrant days prior and when I used my pneumatic wrench the bolt turned a quarter turn and stopped. I used my map gas torch to heat the nut and little by little the bolt came out. I had to reheat the nut a few times and used the pneumatic wrench each time. When I reinstalled the bolts I applied an antiseize compound and the bolts went in very easy. I agree with one of the reviews about the length of the snake it could be a little longer. Also, I purchased 4 lock washers too bad it doesn't come with the kit. Otherwise a great product. I would advise if using the hitch for cargo or bike carrier, purchase the J pin. 45312

Excellent product. Only hard part was drilling (2) 7/16" holes in the frame of the van for 2 of the 6 mounting bolts, which I had to do because I have a 1999 Voyager rather than one of the later models which already has the holes drilled. 174804

The hitch fit my Chrysler T&C well. Plenty of clearance for the spare tire and the socket is just below the bumper and flush with the rear of the bumper. Perfect fit. You'd have to lie on the ground to see anything more than the receiver of the hitch; everything else is hidden. The only difficulty installing was the plastic parts of the bumper that partially cover the space where the carriage bolts are to be inserted. I used a step bit to enlarge two round holes in the frame to get them in and that mod made it a breeze to insert the bolts. The holes lined up just as they should. I managed to mount the pos REESE hitch from the auto parts store on my Dodge pickup so nothing was wasted. If I need another hitch I go the e-trailer first. 123392

The hidden trailer hitch receiver I purchased arrived just in time to install before my trip! However I feel it would have been helpful information to know that the vehicle frame mounting holes needed to drilled out larger. The instructions show that they recommend using a file! That would take all day not to mention the limited acces under the vehicle to get full motion. I recommend using a clyinder shaped grinding stone bit for your power drill. It made short work of the task and additional room for full motion was not needed. I was fortunate to have this bit in my shop supplies. Maybe you could include one of these in the installation kit in the future? The product itself was very satisfactory. Thank you. 48396

Good product. This hitch receiver fit right up to my 2003 Dodge Caravan. E-trailer shipped this product super fast (and I didn't opt for expedited shipping)! Just an extra install tip . . . Since there are 4 snake wires provided, I recommend leaving these threaded to the each bolt until just before the nut is to be threaded on to the bolt. That way, if the bolts do get pushed back up into the vehicle frame, they can be easily retrieved again. The snake wires do not need to be unthreaded, they can be just yanked off with a little bit of circle action as the wire is pulled. As is mentioned in the video, a second body will make the lifting, holding, and securing the hitch much easier. 114325

by: Don V.07/23/2012 is ......Excellent !! ... Would highly recommend. Everything arrived quickly and fit. Installed on a 2007 Chrysler T&C. The only Problems that I experienced were that the bumper mounting bolts required a breaker bar and some liquid wrench to get them removed. Also when fishing the mounting bolts through the vehicles frame channel, it has a hard plastic piece blocking the channel that the bolts must go through. I had to bend this out of the way, but the space to do this is extremely limited. It was real nice having the 4 wires to help with this task. The wheel mount Swagman XC worked great for two TREK Navigator bikes...very happy with this product so far. 49020

I have used Hidden Hitch products in the past with great success and this unit is no exception. Quality build, quality finish and as usual from eTrailer, super shipping speeds. Only challenging thing with this hitch is fishing the bolts through the frame as you may need to grind out the openings in order to get the bolts inside the frame rails. A drill with a extra hard grinding stone makes quick work of enlarging the holes. Fishing the bolts through is quite easy due to the included 'fishing wires' and the wiring harness (05 Chrysler Town n Country) was quite simply, the easiest wiring package I've ever encountered. 26034

Looks Great! Fishing Looks great on 2001 T&C Lx. Had some difficulty fishing the bolts back through because of some hard plastic flaps at the end of the frame. They are not rubber like the installation video states. On the right side, I was able to bend the plastic flap back and pull the bolts(2) through. On the left side there was less room to work. I was able to push the bolts through the hard plastic flap at the bottom gap. All this is by feel also. Using it for cargo and bike racks mostly. Product shipped promptly and arrived in box with directions in great shape. Happy with product and etrailer. 1977

The hitch was a little bit tight on one of the bolts at the muffler side of the van, other than that it fit perfectly. very good quality. It took me about 3 hrs to install though. I had problems removing the bolts from the van as they were a bit rusted, also it took me a while to fish the bolts through the little spaces; the video on the website was very usefull for the installation. I did not have to drill additional holes. I have a voyager model 2002. Im planning to use the hitch for bicycle transportation. Im very satisfied with the overall experience. 10963

One of the things that sold me on your product was the excellent video on installation of the hitch. In the video the excellent design of the hitch, including the ease of installation, was obvious. It did not take me long to do the installation myself, even without raising the minivan above its normal height. Now your follow-up communication adds to the demonstration of the high calibre of excellence in which your company is operated. Thank you for caring enough to provide good old fashioned American excellence. Jerry King 51524

Great Hitch...Fast shipping,,, READ ALL DIRECTIONS FIRST!!!!! I'm a guy.......... who reads the directions.... Well, read them ALL and watch the installation video. Then put your hitch on. Spray rusted bolts prior to removing and wear eye protectors! Love the hitch,,, really performed GREAT. Wiring harness was a breeze... I took a little extra time and really hid all the wires. Also installed Airshocks for the rear... very wise thing to do, would not have made the trip to the cabin with the quads otherwise!!!!! 1430

Had very little trouble installing hitch, drilled two holes for the forward bolts, the bolt fisher wire is GREAT. When I got to the wiring on the right side. I ran a rod down from the top hole for the wires to the bottom past the insulation, etc, then taped the wire to the rod and pulled it up, had no trouble with the left side, no wires are showing, any where in the installion. neat job. Think I did a great job for a 85 year old. No speed records here. 25436

Very impressed with the assembly. Only "nail-biter" was fishing the bolts into the chassis tubes. Long skinny fingers would have helped!!! I am a cheap money-miser but i feel satisified with this investment. I will recommend this product to my other "cheaps", as we all hang in a flock! I studied this hitch thing for over 3 weeks and selected this product. SAVE TIME and buy NOW!!! Mr. Ken ...(sorry for no pictures but i still use a $15.00 flip-phone.) 221009

This is my review, I have to say that wire where you thead bolt is good idea, however I did have some difficultly with the middle bolt hole, I had to take a piece of steel same thickness as the hitch, overlay to coommadate the thread hole that is in the frame of van. Straddled metal piece from 1st hole to middle threaded hole and bolted to the middle threaded hole to van frame. This solved my problem ran bolts in all 6 holes. Sinerely John P 19546

I ordered the hidden hitch and wiring harness kits on Thursday and they were at my door on Monday with notices from etrailer staff every step of the way. In fact, I ordered at 11:30 and by 2:30 it was shipped. I do quite a bit of online shopping but have to say this is the best experience I have ever had. Etrailer sets the bar pretty high. Oh, and the hitch and harness were installed by Monday evening with only a modest amount of hassle. 52516

Great-looking, unseen hitch. Very happy with the prompt delivery from etrailer, and the hitch arrived in perfect condition (no scratches in the paint). Since we have salty roads in the winter, I put a coat of Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator and a coat of Rustoleum enamel on it, just to keep it rust-free. Installation was a breeze. Like the way this hitch looks, with very little of the hitch bracket/tube visible from the back. 2984

I just finished installing this in my 06 Caravan by myself. The hardest part was fishing the wire through the frame, especially the bolts towards the front of the car. Just be careful when threading the front holes because the wire is just barely long enough to reach. A second pair of hands is great but is not needed. Just be careful to hold it so it doesn't fall on your face when trying to screw it in. 21669

Product come the day the website said it would be delivered. That really help me plan to get install over the weekend. The box was a nut mangled, the hitch had a few scratches from the shipping travel. What I like the best about etrailer was the videos showing how to do the installation, it made easier to follow the instructions! I'm planning in towing a pop up trailer and a boat. 242296

Awesome hitch A+ You can't find a better hitch for you minivan than this one. It carries more weight than the van can tow and it looks great. The only part of the hitch you see is the reciever tube. The cross bar is hidden by the bumper which was a must for me. Fairly easy to install, but my old bolts broke off because they were rusty. prices are unbeatable on hitch. Very happy 325

Product delivery was very fast. Installation was very quick and simple after watching the online installation videos. My vehicle was missing a couple of factory bolts but we managed to get replacements from a junked vehicle. I haven't towed anything yet but I am getting my utility trailer this weekend. Etrailer is definitely the best way to go. It couldn't get any better than this. 70997

Customer Service was very pleasant, shipping was fast, and because I am unable to do this type of work any longer, I called on my mechanic. Since he has installed this same hitch many times before, he had the job completed in 30 minutes. The hitch is very sturdy and will have no reservations carrying a lift and electric wheelchair. I would recommend this hitch. Sorry, no pics. 107944

Very happy with trailer hitch. The hitch took about 2 hours to install, on my 2000 Chrysler Town and Country. The mounting bolts securing the front holes of the hitch to the frame required me to grind the carriage bolts in order to fish them through the frame holes. The hitch sits hidden under the chassis and the spare tire fit nicely. Thanks for the great product !!! 50437

We are very satisfied with our purchase. The install was straightforward and all of the necessary parts were included in the kit. Form, fit & function were as advertised, and the hitch worked great in practical application. All of the customer representatives involved went well above my expectation in servicing the order. The hitch itself is great quality and I received it amazingly quickly. However, I ordered one for a 99 Town and Country minivan that was supposed to just bolt on and the product I received was "bolt-on" for 2001 and later. So I had to drill and tap new holes, "which is always fun", he said sarcastically. Still, it works great and I am having fun pulling my boat. 23884

Trailer hitch is good. The install didn't go as easy as hoped. Two of the holes fit on our 99 Dodge Grand Caravan but the third (toward the front of the vehicle) was no where close to an access hole. It was easier just to remove the bumper to do this installation and we did that almost immediately once looking at it. Plan to use it for bike carrier mostly. 17627

This hitch receiver was AWESOME!! Just used it to pull the big U-Haul trailer from Laramie WY, to Portland OR, and it stood up to the challenge incredibly well. I seriously can't say enough good things about this receiver! Very, very pleased!!! FYI - Turn over the 5-1/4" hitch so it bends upward for use on a minivan. We also used the 2" chrome ball. 241118

My trailer hitch arrived today - very fast shipping indeed. It looks Great. I will mount it to the rear frame of our awesome 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan in the next week or so. After a month or more of use, I will do a follow-up review on performance & quality. Thanks for the lowest price available and the very fast UPS shipping. DB 312534

Took a little longer to install this product because I dropped the bolts. One on each side when installing. After retrieving them instal went smooth. Also wanted to mention did this myself, lifted one side up started the bolts then other side, then tightened them all up. Thank you would recommend this product to all caravan owners. 53258

I placed my order one evening, and by mid-day the next day I had an email saying it had shipped! Wow! The hitch was very easy to install after watching the video. Don't even bother with the printed instructions - watch the video! I had the hitch mounted in 60 minutes, and I worked slowly and stopped frequently to watch the video. 23177

Each time they were able to answer questions and make recommendations. I highly recommend doing business with 255280

The unit was easy to install with the videos. The only problem I encountered was removing the two bolts from the frame witch were rusted from the northern Illinois winters. But with the videos I knew what I was getting into before I started. Once I had the bolts out it went together just as the video showed. Thanks, Steve 36001

The construction of the product is good. The installion of it is a joke. Being an HVAC service technician and having mechanical experiance. You have to ream out openings in the frame and snake a rectangular washer and carriage bolt through the frame to attach the item. I would recommend finding a hitch that installs easier. 47825

First time buyer This is the first time I have ever bought a trailer hitch, I usually make my own. The unit came within 3 or four days of my order, easy to install, but I did have to make two hole's in the frame larger. The whole job took about 20 min's. Price was right on target. Great job etrailer and thanks Roger 3993

The trailer hitch that I bought for my Dodge Caravan 2002 fits very well to my car. I had the problem with installation. Great hitch. Install took me 45 minutes. Mostly to get the old bolts off. Used a long 2 feet plus socket wrench to remove. I sprayed them with liquid wrench for 3 nights/days while I was waiting for shipment. Move steadly and it sholdn't snap. Rust was equivalent to 8 winters in michigan salt. 18519

I have not yet used my hitch to tow or carry cargo. Ordering, Delivery, and Installation were all excellent. It was pretty easy to install and looks really good. It is hidden very well under the van and fit perfectly with the pre-drilled holes. Appears to be of very durable construction. 45157

Also, it is important to remember that your towing capacity is limited by the lowest rated component in the towing system, including: vehicle, hitch, ball mount, hitch ball or the capacity of your trailer.
