Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2007 Dodge Caravan - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Draw-Tite class two trailer hitch receiver, part number 36296. What I like most about this hitch is that it's pretty well hidden because really this is just about all that you see. It's going to do a really good job of making sure that you've got good accesibility and usability with this hitch while remaining fairly hidden. The main thing that you're going to see here is just the receiver tube and the safety chain connection points. This receiver tube is 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" with welded-on reinforcement collard around it. The safety chain connections are the rolled steel loops that are welded to the underside of the receiver tube. Features the 1/2" hitch pinhole in order to secure all the accessories.

It features a 300 pound max tongue weight rating in a 3,500 gross trailer weight rating. It's not rated for use with a weight distribution system, but for those weight ratings you do want to be sure to check your owner's manual to see that your vehicle's capable of that weight. Now let's give you some measurements to help assist you with your selection of hitch-mounted accessories such as ball mounts, bike racks, or cargo carriers. The distance from the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost part of the rear bumper is about 4-1/2". The distance from the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening to the ground is about 13". Now let's show you how to install this hitch. First thing we're going to need to do to begin our installation is remove these forward-most bumper bracket bolts.

We'll have to do that on both sides. You're going to need an 18mm socket in order to do that. As you can see, there was some rust buildup. What you can do is if it doesn't want to free up and release from there, you can actually take some penetrating spray and spray it through that access hole right there to get it up onto the threads inside the frame rail and then carefully back it out. Once you've got that out of there, you can take this 12mm stud and you'll thread this up into that hole. You want to get it to where it seats against frame rail like that.

Then whenever you have the hitch installed and you tighten the nut on the underside of here, it will tighten the whole thing down so it's as tight as it needs to be. Once you've done that on both sides, then you can take out this rearmost bumper bracket bolt. Keep in mind, anything we do to one side, we'll be doing that same thing to the other side. You'll want to grab a second set of hands in order to help throw this hitch up there. We'll put it up into place and get it lined up with that hole there, and then use that bracket bolt in order to thread it back in and get it started. Once we've got one bolt started on each side, we can go back and take our round hole spacer block followed by a 1/2" lock washer, and then put onto the 12mm nut.

With all our hardware started, then we can go back and begin to tighten them down. Use a 3/4" socket for the studs, and it will be an 18mm socket for those bolts. Then once we've got all of our hardware tightened down, you'll want to take a torque wrench and torque it to the specification given in the instructions. That's going to complete our look at and installation of the Draw-Tite class two trailer hitch receiver, part number 36296, on our 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan.

2001 Chrysler Town & Country

Installed on 2001 Town and Country Van. Only problem I had was putting one of the rear bolts back in. The nut tread would not take hold of the bolt treads. Ended up getting hold of a tap and die set and some how managed to get it started correctly into the nut. Then the bolt went in. My son had a torque wrench. Next test will be towing my 4X8 trailer without breaking the mounting bolts when loaded. The trailer wiring was a little tricky installing. The ground wire was attached in a different place. Since I used to installed two-way radio's into military equipment it was not hard to figure out another grounding place. The most trouble I had was removing the tail light connector so I could plug in the trailer wiring. Test of trailer lights was right on. Even with the head lights on. 94257

Comments

Still working good. My main suggestion is a longer grounding wire. About twice the length. The problem I have now is the turn signal circuit shorted out. I disconnected the trailer wiring at the connector in the tail light. Still shorted but it was nice too have a easy way to remove trailer wiring from circuit. Being hard wired in, or spliced in would have been a pain.I like simple.

I live in northwest washington, had no problems with rust on my 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. Hitch installed very easily. Kind of. I didn't have a 18 mm socket at the beginning which I needed for the stock bolts. We got it done with a crescent wrench, but that 18mm socket sure did come in handy too tighten everything down. The nuts the hitch came with are 3/4, stock bolts 18mm. Super easy to install though. Would have taken 15 minutes with proper tools, didn't even need to jack the van up. Towing a 14' fiberglass fishing boat. Used with part number "118376 T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector". Wiring harness was very easy to install. I got rear ended in a hit and run so I was worried about how that would affect the install but both were extremely easy. I did the harness while my friend did the hitch. We had a third person to assist us both, can't stress how easy this was though, thank you!!! Also, it showed up a day earlier than what I was told, nice surprise! 524742

Installation was perhaps 15 minutes....or less. However the original bolt removal....not so much. Realizing I had a rust issue and experience with rusted bolts I soaked and agitated the bolts for 2 days in advance but held little hope. Approached somewhat gently, then more aggressively. Broke 1 bolt. What the real problem was that the other three had seriously become one with the nuts. At first look they appeared to be moving but then twisted loose the spot welded receiving nuts on the inside of the bumper channel. Spinning bolts and nuts was the result. Kind of a "now what?" moment for a bit. The cure: Use a cut off disc to slice the bolts or bolt head off. Remove the bumper cover. The bumper will then slide out. I also removed the one oem nut that held the remains of the broken bolt. Acquire new bolts and nuts, Clean metal, TIG weld nuts to bumper channel, prime and paint with your favorite anti rust coating. Reinstall bumper and cover. Some anti-seize on the bolts would not hurt.....just in case you need to do maintenance a few years down the road. Installation is a piece of cake from that point. Tip: I would pick up new nuts and bolts before starting this job for any vehicle more than 5 yrs old and/or lives in the rust and salt belt. 114449

will this work for a power chair?

-- comment by: Janice G - 02/11/2015

You would be much better off going with a 2 inch hitch. Much more capacity for the hitch itself and more options for a carrier for the chair. There are very few options for chair or scooter carriers when it comes to 1-1/4 inch hitches. See part # 87717

2003 Dodge Grand Caravan

The trailer hitch receiver and relevant trailer lights wiring harness arrived within 2 days of order in perfect condition. Both fit the 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan exactly and instillation was exactly as described. I am very satisfied with the product and service. 93440

Comments

A year following installation, I am still satisfied. Although the receiver has been used sparingly, there has been no problem. Same with the trailer lights - no problem. I would recommend these products to a friend.

I was very impressed with etrailer.com's installation videos. They certainly have made quite an investment so their customers can have confidence in knowing that the product they are interested in will surely fit their application. Hitch arrived in a timely manner. Installation would have been a breeze if I followed their suggestion to soak the factory fasteners with penetrating oil before starting. Ya, three bolts out fine, one broke off. Needless to say I caused myself quite a bit of extra work. Listen to them and use the oil!!! Would've been in and down the road in 20 minutes but for the setback. Great experience and etrailer is now my first stop for all my trailering needs. 80461

This seemed like the perfect hitch to pull a small trailer with some kayaks in with my mini-van. I am always a little unsure when a product says fits using existing bolts, no drilling required. The hitch came very fast, and I must admit it fit better than I imagined. I had one stubborn bolt that took a whole can of penetrating oil, but once removed, the hitch was on in a few minutes, and fit like a glove. The plug and play wiring I also ordered went on in minutes, and I was ready to hook up the trailer and go. The hitch looks great, and so does the quality. I would definitely recommend this product and etrailer.com. 260087

1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Installed on a florida native 98 grand caravan. Pre-soaked the bolts with PB Blaster a few days before. I am a big guy and it took considerable force to break them free. I started with a ratchet but soon threw that aside and grabbed the impact and eventually worked them out. This unit is heavy, you will need a helper to install. It fits perfectly. It took us maybe an hour. We did notice how easy it is to cross thread the bolts when reassembling. Ended up with 1 we had to tap. The wiring installed in 10 minutes. Great kit, would definitely recommend. 272588

2002 Dodge Grand Caravan

Works great, but couldn't install it ourselves. Received the hitch quickly. Watched the video. Tried to loosen the first bolts, but couldn't get them to budge. Even my varsity football player son couldn't get the bolts to release! So I took my '02 Dodge Grand Caravan into my mechanic and had him install the hitch as well as the wiring harness. Cost me $60. Mechanic said that he even had a difficult time freeing up the bolts. Too many Minnesota winters on sandy salty roads, I guess. Be sure to get the little hitch cap. Keeps the hitch clean and rust-free. 3774

The Draw Tite fit PERFECT! If following the directions there were NO suprises!! If you watch the video's prior to installation (which made it look soooo easy) it will be!! The same is true for the One T wire harness. Etrailer wants you as a customer to not only be happy with the installing process..they also sell excellent quality products! Customer service, quality products at reasonable prices and fast delivery........you can't ask for more than that!! 238685

So far so good. Product arrived quickly with no damage. Installed from start to finish in 20 minutes. Perfect fit. The way it's designed the spare tire can still easily be removed. Exactly what I was looking for. I have not installed the wires yet but I'm sure they will go on as easily as the hitch. I will tell everyone I know that needs a hitch to look at etrailer.com first. Great price and great products. 353883

The hardest part is getting the somewhat rusted existing bolts out of the vehicle's frame. From then on it was smooth sailing. The hitch fit perfectly, unlike some I've done. I joked with friends, before I started, that it would be 4 bolts, three hrs. I wasn't far off, but again, once the old bolts were out, the job took, like 15 minutes. I'm a happy camper! 67897

Too early to tell how it tows, but the install was very easy and clean. No hammering or fighting for position. (I DID have to prop one end more or less into position to get the other end up to bolt it in, but that was no problem) The light kit was a breeze as well. Much cleaner than splicing and all of that. Just plugged in, grounded and done! 154322

My new Draw-Tite hitch fit perfectly. I followed the video recommendation and sprayed the four bolts a couple of days before installation. The unscrewed easily with a long handle socket wrench. I had the hitch on and tightened down in 20 minutes. I will be using this hitch for my bike rack and cargo carrier. I highly recommend Etrailer 259285

Arrived well packaged with simple instructions and was on vehicle in about 20 minutes. This one is a "no brainer"! Really. I used a small floor jack to help me hold it in place while I lined up the bolts so I could do it myself since I'm not as strong as I use to be!! Have a utility trailer and a bike rack to put it to use. 82463

Chrysler van

I can't possibly say enough good things about this hitch. It fit on my 14 year old Chrysler van like a glove. I would have preferred that the end pieces be welded on both sides of the cross piece, but maybe that's not needed on a hitch with this load rating. Either way, I'm very happy I bought it. 134078

The wiring took only 20 minutes, the hitch install was excellent once I was able to remove 3 very RUSTED bolts on my Caravan! NOTE: soak them in PB Blaster or similar penatrant at least 1 hour PRIOR to bolt removal! Mine SNAPPED OFF because they jammed up 1/2 way out! EXCELLENT HITCH! 38604

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan Strong Enough to Tow Utility Trailer
  • It really just depends on the weight of the trailer. The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36296 that you referenced has towing capacities of 3,500 gross trailer weight and 300 lbs tongue weight. You will need to know the gross trailer weight and tongue weight of the trailer you plan on towing and as long as it does not exceed the capacities of the # 36296 and the towing capacities that are listed in the owners manual of your 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan you would be good. Regardless of which hitch is used, the Grand Caravan is limited to a maximum of 2000 lb towing / 200 lb tongue weight. Although the Class III hitch is rated for 3500 lb towing and 350 lb of tongue weight, the manufacturers maximum tow ratings should not be exceeded. I typically recommend choosing the Class III receiver, because...

  • Is a Special Wiring Harness Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country
  • Your 2001 Chrysler Town and Country has what is called a separate or 3-wire lighting system. This means that the turn signals operate on different circuits/bulbs than the brake lights. But trailers use a combined system with the turn signals and brake lights on the same circuit (with few exceptions). So if you were to splice directly into the vehicle wiring then the light functions would not work properly on the trailer. So all you need to fix this is the proper wiring harness with a...

  • Why Will the Draw-Tite # 75119 Not Fit on a 2003 Dodge Caravan with a Rear Stabilizer Bar
  • According to my technical contact at Draw-Tite the # 75119 is not considered compatible with a 2003 Dodge Caravan models that have Stow and Go seating or vehicles that have a rear stabilizer bar. This hitch requires 3 mounting locations, and most likely the forward most mounting hole would interfere with the vehicle stabilizer bar. However the Draw-Tite # 36296, is a more compact hitch and only requires 2 mounting bolt locations. If you do have the Stow and Go seating or a vehicle stabilizer...

  • Which Draw Tite Hitch is Confirmed as a fit for a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • The 36196 is a discontinued hitch that fit a vehicle that is configured totally differently than your 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. If you have to have a hitch installed on your van I can only recommend the part # 36296. You might be able to rationalize it to your wife by saying that trying to modify your current hitch to fit your van would put her and your kids life in danger and no amount of money savings is worth that! Good luck!

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT With Stow N Go Seating
  • According to Draw-Tite, their Class II Trailer Hitch, # 36296, fits all models of the Dodge Grand Caravan from 1996 to 2004. They do not list Stow 'N Go compatibility until 2005. This hitch will not fit the 2005 models with the Stow 'N Go seating. Instead, part # 36320 would be required. After doing some research, it looks like the Stow 'N Go option was first released in 2004 for the 2005 model years. It may be possible that your 2004 model was an early production 2005 model. You should...

  • Recommendation For Trunk Mount 3-Bike Racks for 1996 Dodge Caravan With Rear Spoiler
  • Any vehicle that has a rear spoiler on its trunk or above its rear hatch can pose a challenge to proper fitment of a trunk-style bike rack. Often these spoilers are delicate and cannot handle the pressure of the bike rack's installation straps. The good news is that the folks at Hollywood Racks have designed a lightweight trunk-mount rack expressly made for such vehicles. Their 3-bike Over-the-Top rack # HRF2-3 features an arching design that extends up and over the rear spoiler to avoid...
