Nice looking hitch! When installed all you see is the square receiver. Very nice and easy install just be careful removing the taillight assemblies as I broke a tip off and had to repair it. 769857

Pretty easy install after checking out the etrailer install videos. These are such a valuable resource. Came out looking like it arrived from the factory with the hitch on. Shipping was super fast. Have ordered a bunch of stuff here. Never been disappointed. 763776

I've purchased here before and, once again, the product and customer service has been outstanding. I found the same receiver for my Outback at another online location for less money and said as much to the rep on the phone. She gave me directions on how to get 110% back on the price difference. It was way easy to do so I bought the unit from etrailer and within 2 days was refunded the difference along with an extra 10%. I've used this company for several purchases previously and have always had a positive experience. I can't complain about anything. Their product is exactly what they say it is. 765989

Definitely recommend. As I had a couple questions and did not want to order our hitch off another online retailer (they get enough of our business) contacted etrailer. Wow what luck was helped by Danielle whom cheerfully answered my questions , so decided to place order directly with her. Quick and free shipping . Received the hitch as promised. This is the place to go for anything trailer related. 768302

It took me about 45 minutes to install the hitch. Easy step by step instructions come with the hitch. It’s helpful to have 1/2” chuck 14mm socket in order to get the nuts off bumper beam stud, otherwise you’ll have to use 14mm wrench as the deep socket won’t fit. Also, I didn’t completely removed the nuts that hold bumper beam, this way it stayed on the studs while I slid the rack in between bumper beam and trunk pan. 770993

This hitch fix very well on my 2020 Subaru Outback. For those considering the Subaru OEM hitch which is embedded in the bumper (instead of just below it), this hitch is level with the exhaust pipes. So, in my mind I'm not losing ground clearance. The installation was simple after I reviewed the color online instructions. The provided instructions are black & white which make the images a bit confusing. One suggestion is to clearing state that you don't need to take the bumper off. At this point, there aren't any good video for the installation & the previous year model required taking the bumper off. 786347

Quality well built hitch. The installation instructions were confusing pertaining to what to do to install the hitch after removing the bumper hardware. I was under the impression that the bumper had to be totally removed from the vehicle which is impossible to do with the rear plastic surround installed. But I figured it out eventually. 757528

Comments
I can see where the current instructions are not as clear as they could be regarding the bumper. After installing the hitch, the bumper will be reinstalled on top of the hitch. Some hitches do replace the bumper beam, but this application requires the bumper beam be reinstalled.

My second hitch form etrailer. the only place to buy a hitch. Installs as described. Really is a two man job but one can do it, just takes a little longer. $xx.xx with light harness vs $500.00 at dealer. What a deal! 765626

Easy to install with minimal DIY experience, took about 90 minutes but the instructions were lacking. What's involved: removing the bumper fascia, unbolting the bumper beam, rebolting the beam on with the hitch in between the beam and the frame, and trimming and reinstalling the fascia. No need to remove exhaust like in similar hitch install instructions. Tools I used: socket wrench with 6 inch extension, 14mm deep socket, 17mm socket, flat head screw driver, philips screw driver, sturdy household scissors. Bumper is removed via ~15 plastic tabs along the bottom and wheel wells that must be popped off with a flat head screw driver. I unscrewed the tail lights, but they may be able to stay on. From there, just unbolt the bumper beam and rebolt with the hitch inbetween (extra set of hands very helpful here). Finally, cut the bumper with the 2.5"x3.5" pattern and reattach bumper with push pins. Hitch installs flush with bumper, so ground clearance is minimally impacted. Since there are no videos of the install yet, I'd recommend watching an older Outback install video that details the push pins and bumper removal. 751622

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

The hitch wiring harness for my 2020 Subaru Outback worked great. The kit had everything I needed and it arrived quickly. The instructions however were incorrect. Subaru does a great job leaving a connector prewired in the car. The problem was finding it. The instructions led me to the incorrect location in the back of the car on the side, which wasted more than an hour of my time, not to mention removing quite a bit of covering and panels from the car that wasn’t necessary. The instructions appear to be for a 2019 or earlier Outback. The connector on the 2020 Outback is still hidden and it’s under a panel in the very back of the car slightly towards the passenger side. Once I found it the rest of the installation was easy. 749529

I ordered the Curt CU89FR 2” hitch for my 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon. It arrived on time, in good condition, and with great directions for installation. The hitch is well constructed and installed perfectly using the directions. I purchased this hitch for my bicycle rack which is 1-1/4 “ so I had to buy a hitch reducer to bring down the opening to 1-1/4” which trailer has as well. Currently Curt does not offer a hitch with the 1-1/4” opening. ETrailer is a great company with great products and great service! 767019

It took a little more than I planned to install this receiver. The instructions seemed simple, but fussing with trying to get the hitch bolted in by myself was very difficult. Then I read the obscure note that "two people may be required". Without being able to put the vehicle up on a lift made it very difficult even with the help of a second person. However, it is done and works well. The receiver is a little bit of overkill for what I am using it for (initially bike rack), but will enable me to tow a much bigger load when pulling my boat. William B was extremely helpful on my initial phone call to etrailer. 762973

Great hitch. Fairly easy to install about 1 1/2 hours for myself to install. Would be nice for an extra set of hands to help lift the hitch in place behind the bumper beam. Pull push fastener pins out as far as they can go to slide through the facia bracket. Also I bent the brackets to get them out of the way and avoid cutting my hands. Once trailer hitch was in behind the bumper beam it is easy to install the 4 new bolts and washers supplied for the installation and 2 nuts. Tighten all down and replace the facia cover with push pins back on. Cutting the facia bracket is a breeze prior to re-installing the facia cover. 757313

Product arrived within two days. Simple instructions for installation. We could have used a little more information on how the bumper plastic came off as the car is new and we did not want any damage. After figuring that out the rest was pretty simple. Luckily I have a 2000 lb floor jack that we used to lift and hold the hitch securely in place while we bolted it on to the frame. Over all it took us a little over two hours from start to finish. It fit perfectly and looks like it came with the car. 751445

2020 Subaru Outback Wagon

The hitch arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. The long awaited install in my 2020 Outback was not hard at all but did have a few quirks which I will share here. 1) Getting the 9 upper clips of the bumper undercover released was challanging. I eventually found a tiny screwdriver could be used to pry the retention "finger" in the bottom of each slot 1/16" gave just enough room for the locking clip to be pushed down and released. Start at one side and work across. 2) A 6 point socket works best for this and minimizes the risk of rounding the 4 factory bolt heads when taking them off. I almost rounded one with a 12pt socket whuch would have been very bad news. 3) The new high strength bolts supplied fit the factory frame threads VERY TIGHT and can be hard to get started! You need to run them in and out of all 4 threaded frame holes a couple of times BEFORE you put the hitch in place. This saves ALLOT of time and grief latter on. ( IF the new bolt still won't start later with the hitch in place, I found that installing the tapered factory bolt first , tightening all adjacent bolts, then replacing the factory bolt with the new bolt as a last step, seemed to work best.) YOU DON"T want to mess up the threads on either the cars frame or the new bolts so take your time. 4) A drop of dish soap on the bumper under cover clips helps when reattaching the cover after install. 5) Factory recommendation for cut dimentions work well. Measure twice, cut once! In the end, I'm extreemly pleased with the way this hitch fit, looks and works with the recommended T-one connector. Well done to Etrailer! 747197

Subaru Outback Wagon

The hitch was in the mail 24 hours after I ordered it and etrailer notified me when it was sent and when it was delivered. The hitch itself fit perfectly and looks good on my 2020 Subaru Outback. I was a little nervous removing the bumper to install the hitch. The instructions on how to do this were pretty scant and I resorted to YouTube to learn more. Once I got the bumper removed the rest of the installation was pretty easy. What I don’t understand is why there is an open slot on each side of the hitch rather than three holes. The car has a bolt that sticks out from the frame to help hold the bumper plate and the hitch during mounting but since there are slots on the hitch the bolt has nothing to hold onto. As a result it takes two people to install the hitch. Once the hitch was installed reassembling the bumper was pretty easy. 749525

This hitch is a great value, fits perfectly and looks good. I installed it myself in an hour having average DIY skills. The only dificulty I had was with the top clips on the bumper under cover. I would have liked a more detail in the instructions on how to free them. Perhaps this step would have been easier with another person. Also, while these clips went back together easier than they came apart, a set of hands inside and out would have helped. Half of my install time was this set of clips! Loosening the bumper cross bar and installing the hitch itself was a breeze. I didn't fully remove the nuts from the studs because that felt safer to me. There was still plenty of room to slide the hitch in place. Etrailer customer service was great although there was a supply problem from Curt initially. I took advantage of their low price pledge and they honored it with no complaint. Photos show tabs that gave me problems and finished job except bumper cover not fully engaged because I was waiting to borrow a torque wrench. It looks great finished. There is essentially no space between the bumper cover and top of hitch, so minimal loss of departure angle. Receiver sits flush with face of bumper so it will not be a knee knocker. 746592

There is confusion with installing this hitch on the 2020 Outback. The instructions call for just removing the Rear Bumper Underguard. But after removing the five plastic push fasteners, it’s not well explained how to get the 9 hidden clips undone. Some reviewers figured it out. Others said they removed the whole rear bumper cover. So, I called etrailer for help and they recommended removing the whole rear bumper cover. They sent me a link to better instructions for doing this on the 2020 Outback, and I decided to go this way. My car had gone through a snowy winter, so I cleaned it well and hosed off the wheel wells, underbody and the rear bumper area as best I could. When I removed the rear bumper cover (relatively easy) it still had a lot of road crud from the winter in it. As a result I could not disconnect the two electrical connectors (which are on the drivers side). I tried soaking and cleaning them, but the release tabs would not depress enough to allow them to disconnect. Fortunately there was enough slack in the cables so I could swing the passenger side of the bumper cover inside the car and leave it there while I installed the hitch. The hitch went on easily. The only trouble I had was that while loosening one of the existing bolts, the head started to round. I remembered reading one review that said to use a 6 point socket rather than a 12 point. After doing this everything went smoothly. I removed the four bolts, and just loosened the two nuts all the way, but left them engaged. I could easily slide the hitch between the trunk pan and bumper beam. With a helper holding up the hitch, I had no trouble lining up the four new bolts and getting the threads started by hand. All in all this is a good product, but better installation instructions, or a video, would be a great help. 792532

  • Recommended 2020 Subaru Outback Trailer Hitch Receiver and 7-Way Plug With Brake Controller
The easiest trailer hitch receiver installation is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # DT73RR for your 2020 Subaru Outback. It is the only option we have that doesn't require removing the bumper which is definitely more time and labor intensive. This will utilize holes already in your frame so no drilling is required. You will need to modify a heat shield and the entire installation will take approximately 40 minutes. The Curt T-Connector...

  • How to Mount 7 Way to 2019 Subaru Outback With Hidden Cross Tube Hitch
I understand the frustration, manufacturers are making hitches more hidden and sleek. It's nice having the cross bar hidden, but it does make it challenging to mount wiring because that's the traditional spot. You can route the 4 pole wire out to the bumper through a grommet that is under the spare tire. I have done that many times to get the wires out towards the hitch, you'll just want to make sure the wire is protected and to seal the grommet up with some silicone # LT37467. You...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon
The best trailer hitch available for your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon is the Curt # CU89FR because of its hidden crosstube design and superior black powder coat finish that tends to last longer than those from other manufacturers. Its hidden design allows only the 2" receiver to be visible on the Outback, maintaining a clean, OEM-like appearance on your brand new vehicle (see attached image). This Class III hitch features a 600 pound tongue weight capacity as well, which is more than...

  • Does Bumper of 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon have to Remove to Install Curt Trailer Hitch
For a hitch that fits your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon we have the Curt Class III part # CU89FR which does require removing the rear bumper and cover. I also attached a link to this page that covers the entire install on a 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon just like yours as well.

  • Best 2 inch Hitch for 2020 Subaru Outback to Carry Bike Rack for 2 inch Hitch
For a 2 inch trailer hitch for your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon the Curt hitch part # CU89FR is the best option. It is mostly hidden, the size you need, and has plenty of towing capacity. The difficult rating is related to time it will take to install instead of actual difficulty which I admit is a little misleading. For every 10 minutes of install time is a point on the scale. So this hitch is estimated to take 100 minutes for an average installer. But I attached an install instructions...

  • Will a Weight Distribution System Work With the Curt Class 3 Hitch on My 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon?
We have some other options for sway control, but the Curt part # CU89FR is not rated for weight distribution systems. Unfortunately we don't have any hitches for your 2020 Subaru Outback that are rated for weight distribution systems. Sometimes the restrictions on weight distribution systems come from the car manufacturer and not the hitch manufacturer. You can use a sway control system like part # 83660. This is a good alternative to reduce your trailer sway. You also need the hitch...
