Great hitch. Fairly easy to install about 1 1/2 hours for myself to install. Would be nice for an extra set of hands to help lift the hitch in place behind the bumper beam. Pull push fastener pins out as far as they can go to slide through the facia bracket. Also I bent the brackets to get them out of the way and avoid cutting my hands. Once trailer hitch was in behind the bumper beam it is easy to install the 4 new bolts and washers supplied for the installation and 2 nuts. Tighten all down and replace the facia cover with push pins back on. Cutting the facia bracket is a breeze prior to re-installing the facia cover.

Hitch for my 2020 Subaru Outback has worked great. I installed the hitch myself and followed the videos and photos for support. The videos were spot on and I had no problem with the hitch. Just have all the correct wrench sockets ready to go and within reach. Helps to raise up the rear end a bit to have more room. You will need the room to lift the hitch in place. It fits close and looks like it was suppose to be there. Highy recommended.

The hitch arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. The long awaited install in my 2020 Outback was not hard at all but did have a few quirks which I will share here. 1) Getting the 9 upper clips of the bumper undercover released was challanging. I eventually found a tiny screwdriver could be used to pry the retention "finger" in the bottom of each slot 1/16" gave just enough room for the locking clip to be pushed down and released. Start at one side and work across. 2) A 6 point socket works best for this and minimizes the risk of rounding the 4 factory bolt heads when taking them off. I almost rounded one with a 12pt socket whuch would have been very bad news. 3) The new high strength bolts supplied fit the factory frame threads VERY TIGHT and can be hard to get started! You need to run them in and out of all 4 threaded frame holes a couple of times BEFORE you put the hitch in place. This saves ALLOT of time and grief latter on. ( IF the new bolt still won't start later with the hitch in place, I found that installing the tapered factory bolt first , tightening all adjacent bolts, then replacing the factory bolt with the new bolt as a last step, seemed to work best.) YOU DON"T want to mess up the threads on either the cars frame or the new bolts so take your time. 4) A drop of dish soap on the bumper under cover clips helps when reattaching the cover after install. 5) Factory recommendation for cut dimentions work well. Measure twice, cut once! In the end, I'm extreemly pleased with the way this hitch fit, looks and works with the recommended T-one connector. Well done to Etrailer!

Hitch was delivered fast and at a great price. Packing was excellent by the folks at etrailer. For the price I don't think there's a better option for the 2020 Outback. Looks great installed and wasn't overly difficult. Did need a second pair of hands to hold in place while I threaded the new bolts, but apart from that completed the install myself in around 1.5 hours. Followed the Curt hitch install thread on the outback forum. Thanks etrailer for a great product at a nice price.

A great product that is well engineered. You can install it by yourself by supporting it on anything that will support its weight. 28lbs. Be sure to loosen the nut on the stud all the way almost to the end and angle the bottom of the bumper frame outward towards the rear of the car, which makes it easier to slide the hitch between the bumper frame and the car frame. Once in place I installed the lower bolt on each side and then the upper bolts. It's much easier to align the hitch and install the lower bolts first. Why only 4 stars??? The supplied bolts should be tapered for easier threading. Threading the bolts was the hardest part of the installation especially the upper bolts! Other reviewers have also mentioned this. Hopefully Curt will supply tapered bolts in the future. The install time was 2.5 hours. Otherwise a great product!

What really sold me on using etrailer was the video comparing the different hitches available for my car. Very helpful. I ordered the hitch on June 8th and it was at my door on June 11th, excellent! I did have the hitch installed at a local shop and it fit my car exactly as advertised. It also looks very unobtrusive. A happy customer.

This tow hitch is fantastic!!! One full year of being installed and it has been a champ at holding my bike rack with 2-4 adult bikes loaded at a time. The install process was very straight forward and took less than an hour to complete by myself. Very sturdy hitch, 10/10 would recommend.

Received within 8 days even being on back order. etrailer sent me an email offering another model sooner, but I liked the look and easier install of this model for my wife’s 2021 Outback. Install took about an hour. Will need a 14 mm and a 17 mm box wrench to get to the outside bolt. Looks factory and adds all the road trip options I wanted for the Subaru Wagon.

Put this on a 2020 Subaru Outback. Had to cut the rear lower fascia plastic a bit, per the directions and the template. Took my time and watched some videos . Bolts and holes all lined up just fine. The hardest part was removing the lower fascia trim as the clips are hard to get to. I did it my self but a helper would have been nice. Fits nice and snug under the car. We have used for a bike carrier and utility trailer. Solid, no rust after a year.

- CU89FR

The hitch came with some deep scratches exposing raw metal materials. Our trip is coming soon so no time for return or exchange. Although the scratches are hidden behind the bumper, they are very intimidating. Other than that, it looks good after installed. The installation went well. I took my time to get it done right. It took me almost 3 hrs to install it by myself.

Installed at the only DIY Garage in Austin, where lifts are available for $30/hour. HIGHLY recommended you do this install on a lift - makes it so much easier. The plastic trim removal and especially reinsertion is likely the most onerous part of the job. Bumper bar has a habit of slipping down - make sure you've got it all the way up or your top nut (on the stud) will start crooked. Once you're sure the bumper bar is straight, the nut goes on nicely. Then the trick is getting enough leverage to torque it properly. The bottom two on each side have enough room for a torque wrench. The top, not so much. Very solid hitch that I installed in around 2 hours total almost entirely by myself (I did get one of the shop guys to hold up the hitch while I got the bolts started). etrailer.com made it easy.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

The hitch came fast. It took me 3 hours to attach it to the car, mostly because it was 35 degrees in the garage. I did bend the middle bumper point down and was able to bend it back up after the hitch was in place, and was able to put the plastic pin back in place

Install hardware barely fits vehicle. Directions should include removing entire rear bumper cover, like the OEM hitch install. But clearly they want you to think this will be easy. Bolts on driver side are a blind reach and very tight space. Stripped out one captured nut and now have to start this project over. I've never experienced such a poor-fitting bolt-on product that's supposedly made for the vehicle. A quick online search revealed that the bolt threading is a known issue, and many people cannot get the job completed with the included hardware. Additionally, hitch arrived scratched. Powder coating was completely rubbed off in two spots. I covered with Rustoluem just to be able to get the project done and not deal with a return. I'll only have the car another two years anyway. But overall, I'm extremely disappointed with the product quality, install instructions, and product handling by etrailer. First order--hopefully my last.

Thank you for your review. The written instructions do state to remove the rear bumper underbody panel first then the bumper cover. etrailer knows that written instructions are sometimes hard to follow and they may leave out small details, which is why we make our own installation videos to help. I have attached the install video for your vehicle.

Fantastic hitch at a great price for our Subaru Outback 2020. Fits perfectly but needed the two of us for installation, one holding the hitch in place, the other fastening the screws. But once in place, it is great for e-bike racks and towing.

Great product, easy to install and perfect fit, only took 50 minutes from start to finish. Tori made the buying experience very simple. I followed her instructions and she and eTrailer price matched a competitor's price, no questions asked! I received the hitch in three days, free shipping! This is my fourth purchase through etrailer, now my 2021 Subaru Outback is ready to take the bikes anywhere!

Sturdy well made hitch. Tips for install. There is a plug to disconnect the whole backup sensor loom. See photos. My hitch is very snug to the bumper. It's as low as it can go. May do some trimming later to get the hitch a little lower.

This hitch is a great value, fits perfectly and looks good. I installed it myself in an hour having average DIY skills. The only dificulty I had was with the top clips on the bumper under cover. I would have liked a more detail in the instructions on how to free them. Perhaps this step would have been easier with another person. Also, while these clips went back together easier than they came apart, a set of hands inside and out would have helped. Half of my install time was this set of clips! Loosening the bumper cross bar and installing the hitch itself was a breeze. I didn't fully remove the nuts from the studs because that felt safer to me. There was still plenty of room to slide the hitch in place. Etrailer customer service was great although there was a supply problem from Curt initially. I took advantage of their low price pledge and they honored it with no complaint. Photos show tabs that gave me problems and finished job except bumper cover not fully engaged because I was waiting to borrow a torque wrench. It looks great finished. There is essentially no space between the bumper cover and top of hitch, so minimal loss of departure angle. Receiver sits flush with face of bumper so it will not be a knee knocker.

After a year of use, this hitch has been fantastic. Installation was easy enough with the instructional video that I managed to get it mounted myself. I’d recommend two people to more easily hood the hitch in place while tightening down the bolts, but otherwise, not difficult at all.

by:
2020 Subaru Outback Wagon

It took me about 45 minutes to install the hitch. Easy step by step instructions come with the hitch. It’s helpful to have 1/2” chuck 14mm socket in order to get the nuts off bumper beam stud, otherwise you’ll have to use 14mm wrench as the deep socket won’t fit. Also, I didn’t completely removed the nuts that hold bumper beam, this way it stayed on the studs while I slid the rack in between bumper beam and trunk pan.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Ordered the Curt 13437 trailer hitch from eTrailer (item CU89FR) this week. It arrived 2 days later. Emails were sent alerting me when it was shipped and delivered. etrailer is always on top of communication. I purchase a Curt hitch from etrailer for my wife's van 12 years ago and had good results, so I stuck with Curt. So, I read through other product reviews and looked at some videos from etrailer and online videos. Could not find a 2020 Subaru Outback install for this hitch. I did find a 2017 Outback install etrailer which helped guide me through the process. It took approximately 2 hours for me to complete the process. I was a little apprehensive about removing the bumper cover, but it came off with little to no problem. These are the following steps for removal, 1. Mud flaps which consisted of two 8 mm screws and two push pin fasteners which I removed with a small flat head screw driver, 2. Removal of push pin fasteners under the bumper cover, approximately 7 or 8, (the first two steps were rather easy), 3. Removal of the bumper cover which was a little more difficult as I was afraid I would crack one of the snap attachments. I thought I would need to remove the tail lights and did so on the left side but that was not necessary so I kept the right side intact. After carefully peeling away the bumper cover, I needed the assistance of another person so I could detach the wiring for the backup sensors and camera. This was all rather easy. 4. Removal of the bumper using a 14 mm socket/rachet. The space is a little tight so I had to use a smaller ratchet and a break bar to get better leverage. The bumper was easily removed after removing 2 bolts and one nut. Another sensor connection needed to be removed at that point and I needed help from my son to hold the bumper while I detached the sensor. 5. We then installed the hitch which took two people to hold both the trailer hitch and the bumper in place while I ratcheted the included 17 mm bolts into place. I made sure everything was lined up perfectly (there is a little play) before I tighten securely. 6. trimming the fascia took a little time as I wanted to be perfect and make no mistakes. (These are where the instructions are a little lacking IMO). I used a Dremel to cut the fascia which made it very easy. 7. Reattach the bumper cover and mud flaps which took appx 15 minutes and all was good. I took several pictures for reference. My main use for the trailer hitch will be to haul our 4 bikes to the trails and to carry luggage on long trips, saving space in the car. I thought about getting the easier to install Draw-Tite trailer hitch but wanted to keep the cross tube hidden and maintain as much clearance as possible. I think I made the correct cover for the 2020 Outback. It was easier than I thought.

Easy to install with minimal DIY experience, took about 90 minutes but the instructions were lacking. What's involved: removing the bumper fascia, unbolting the bumper beam, rebolting the beam on with the hitch in between the beam and the frame, and trimming and reinstalling the fascia. No need to remove exhaust like in similar hitch install instructions. Tools I used: socket wrench with 6 inch extension, 14mm deep socket, 17mm socket, flat head screw driver, philips screw driver, sturdy household scissors. Bumper is removed via ~15 plastic tabs along the bottom and wheel wells that must be popped off with a flat head screw driver. I unscrewed the tail lights, but they may be able to stay on. From there, just unbolt the bumper beam and rebolt with the hitch inbetween (extra set of hands very helpful here). Finally, cut the bumper with the 2.5"x3.5" pattern and reattach bumper with push pins. Hitch installs flush with bumper, so ground clearance is minimally impacted. Since there are no videos of the install yet, I'd recommend watching an older Outback install video that details the push pins and bumper removal.

The entire hitch crossbar will be concealed behind the rear bumper and fascia once the hitch is installed just like more expensive options, but from a quality standpoint this hitch is on par with the more expensive hitch fits. For a wiring harness, I'd recommend the # C56040 from Curt. The installation is plug and play, as shown in the installation video I've linked for...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommended For 2020 Subaru Outback
Both hitches are what's called a concealed design, which means that the crossbar is concealed behind the bumper, and the only visible portion of the hitch would be the receiver tube and the safety chain loops. Both hitches install in similar fashion, with the rear bumper beam being removed and the hitch mounted in its place. The Curt # CU89FR hitch instructions call for the beam to be replaced so the hitch is sandwiched between the bumper structure and the trunk pan, while the EcoHitch...

  • Recommended 2020 Subaru Outback Trailer Hitch Receiver and 7-Way Plug With Brake Controller
The easiest trailer hitch receiver installation is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # DT73RR for your 2020 Subaru Outback. It is the only option we have that doesn't require removing the bumper which is definitely more time and labor intensive. This will utilize holes already in your frame so no drilling is required. You will need to modify a heat shield and the entire installation will take approximately 40 minutes. The Curt T-Connector...

  • Parts Needed to Install 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon
Glad to hear that you're already set up with the Curt Trailer Hitch # CU89FR on your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon. If you don't already have a 4-Way connector like the Curt # C56040 then that is our first step. Next is to upgrade this to a 7-Way since Subaru doesn't have direct provisions. For this I recommend the 7-Way Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L which gets us both 4-Way and 7-Way connectors. The 7-Way will carry all of the lighting functions and then also supply 12V power once we route the black...

  • Main Differences Between Eco Hitch EH34FR and Curt CU89FR for 2020 Subaru Outback?
Both hitches are manufactured in the USA, and are high quality. The Curt # CU89FR and the EcoHitch # EH34FR hitches are extremely similar. They install in the same manner, by being sandwiched between the bumper beam and the trunk pan of the vehicle. Both hitches are a concealed style, with only the receiver tube and the safety chain loops being visible from the rear. This makes for a very nice look when not in use. They will both require a little trimming of the rear fascia but and the...

  • Is Curt Hitch for 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon Recommended for Carrying Bike Rack
The Curt hitch you referenced # CU89FR is a great option for your 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon to carry a bike rack. It's mostly hidden and has plenty of weight capacity as well. We don't have a list of preferred installers for the hitches we carry like the mostly hidden Curt # CU89FR we offer for your 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon but the best solution is to find a local mechanic to you with a good reputation and have them do the install. Hitch installs are very basic for mechanics so this...
