Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 1997 Ford F-250 - Curt

Today, on our 1997 Ford F250, we'll be installing our Curt two inch Receiver Hitch part number C15300. This is what our hitch will look like once installed. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is four and a quarter inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 18 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. We'll go ahead with installation. To begin our install we'll first go ahead and point out the attachment points.

For this application we'll have to drill out the attachment points. We'll have a total of six, three on each side. Starting with the forward attachment point, there is a small pre-drilled hole in both prime rails. We'll be using this pre-drilled hole as a starting point for our hitch. We'll go ahead and drill the hole out large enough for half inch hardware then put our carriage bolt and block in to place.

Next, it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while we install the half inch flange nut to hold the hitch up in to position. With our hitch in place, we'll go ahead and mark the center and rear attachment points. Noting this application does have a pre-drilled hole at the rear attachment point, however, it's not center of the attachment point for our hitch, so we'll go ahead and drill out a hole right next to it. With the holes marked, we'll go ahead and take the hitch back down. Using the step bit process we'll start with a smaller bit to create a pilot hole enlarging the bit size until we get to our final size which will be large enough for the half inch hole at our center attachment point and nine sixteenths tall for the rear attachment point. With our holes drilled out, we're ready to put our hardware in place. Note for the center attachment point we'll have a half inch carriage bolt and block going down through the frame and then through the hitch.

To secure the hitch, we'll install a second block and then the half inch flange nut. For the rear attachment point we'll be using the nine sixteenths carriage bolt and block going down through the frame and through the hitch and then securing it with a nine sixteenths locking flange nut. With our carriage bolt and blocks in place we're ready to put the hitch in position. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your hardware and flange nuts. With everything finger tight, we'll go ahead and run it down.

Next, we'll torque to specifications as indicated instructions. That does it for the install of our Curt 2" Hitch part number C15300 on our 1997 Ford F250. .

TRAILER HITCH FOR MY 1997 DODGE TRUCK. I was a little nervous ordering this online for fear it would not fit, one never knows when ordering online if custom parts will work properly or not, but this fit perfectly. I like it. I don't have a trailer yet, but wanted to be prepared when I need to pull one. 505810

I was looking for a receiver hitch for my 1987 F-250 that wouldn't interfere with my spare. I had to replace my bumper which was a ugly 10 in drop. (This won't fit the 10 in drop unless you make a cutout for the receiver) I picked up a stock, better looking bumper for 30 bucks. There where no holes in my frame so I removed the rivets, opened those hole and had to drill 4 more holes for the install. The hitch is the heaviest hitch I have seen and well worth the money. Free shipping and it was at my door in less than a week. 81631

I put this on our 1993 Dodge dually after I noticed what looked like stress fractures on the old hitch while I was having an exhaust leak repaired. The failure was probably caused by an overloaded dump trailer full of gravel. The price for this Class V hitch from etrailer couldn’t be beat so I bought it. I’ve since pulled serveral large loads with my 3400lb dump trailer, the heaviest being a load of gravel weighing 5.67 tons according to the bill. More than 1000lbs shy of the 16000lb limit and it pulled great, even at over 60 mph. This hitch is heavy and well made. I use a forged ball mount with square tube clamp attached to make the assembly rigid. You’ll be amazed at how much this will quiten all of your towing. I feel like I got a great deal from etrailer on this hitch and wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again if we get another truck. 488912

It fit my 1987 F-150. I clamped it to my frame where it fit best, drilled the holes. I have pulled my camper about 2000 MI since june 8th and all is well. I did remove my under box spare (what a nuisance) however if I wanted I could replace it as I believe there is room. 428299

Great experience! Not only I was able to find the correct info for my vehicle to match the hitch. I found videos, and Etrailer people explaining everything. Then I found the same hitch elsewhere for less and I was refunded , with photos and 110% just as it's stated in their price pledge policy. This is now my got to places for anything they offer. One extremely tough hitch. I have a 1996 Ford F250, the body shop thought it wouldn't work. I got it home and with a lot of grunting and drilling (use a new cobalt bit), I was able to bolt it, one side at a time. When drilling, use some cutting oil that's used for black iron pipe (Oatey, found in plumbing will work). To make sure your carriage bolt plate will seat flat, make sure to drill as close inward toward the center of your vehicle as you can, allowing yourself enough metal as is reasonable. Thanks etrailer for the expedited shipping and great phone help. I've attached some pics for those who want to see what it looks like installed. 66904

Nice, heavy duty hitch, fits nice, excellent price, this hitch was cheaper than most outher lighter hitches. My install required drilling and suggest good quality and sharp bits will make the install easy. 415038

Very happy with the service and the products. My Ford F-150 pulls a big trailer, with a lot of equipment weight, so the hitch and accessories have to be heavy-duty. I had a couple of questions, and they were answered within a reasonable amount of time, and I was able to order the correct parts. The order arrived in record time. Everything fit as advertised. I've got a rock-solid trailer hitch now, that's up to the task. eTrailer.com has my full recommendation. 346671

Very happy with the product. Was able to install by myself in a little over an hour, fit like a glove and has performed flawlessly with the loads of firewood I've been hauling. Shipping was fast, and the overall experience with etrailer was absolutely fantastic. Etrailer was one of the only websites that had an accurate description of the frame width/depth dimensions that made ordering the right hitch a breeze. Would recommend Etrailer to anyone in the market for Heavy Duty/Standard Duty Receiver Hitches, and all other trailer needs. Thanks for the great product and will be hauling with this hitch for some time. Have a Blessed day 530122

Purchased your hitch after there was a recall on my 2000 Dodge truck for a defective hitch. Had the truck inspected by the dodge dealer and they ordered a new hitch for me. Two weeks later they said the recall was not in effect anymore. When I received your hitch and compared it to the factory hitch it was obviously a better quality hitch. Thicker material and bigger bolts and gusseted where it needed to be. Installed the etrailer hitch in a couple of hours by myself in my driveway. Fits perfect. Thank you etrailer. 591959

I bought this product with the understanding it may not fit with my 10" drop bumper though it was designed for my application (1995 F350 DRW). Thanks to etrailer who gave detailed measurements in their FAQ section for the C15300, let me measure my truck and figured I could make it work. It installed fairly straight forward like most hitches and I simply had to adjust the bumper brackets and use 3/8" (.375") x 2" bar stock to make spacer blocks for all the mounting points. It tucked up exactly like I wanted compared to the other options and it fit in place of the step bumper receiver plate I had in place. I purchased the C15300 because I like the fully welded design and gusseting that leads to its ratings. I am very happy with my purchase and etrailer's product offerings. 568179

So the products are exactly as described - high quality. What I really want to review is the customer service I received from Etrailer. I'm somewhat of a pessimist and believe service has gone downhill with online ordering for the past two decades. That said, when UPS messed up my delivery, etrailer's customer service picked up the ball and addressed every single issue. Even though this was not their fault, Teresa J helped with getting a new hitch ordered immediately, followed up with phone calls and emails, and made sure everything was taken care of. I am a life-long customer now. Thanks, Teresa - your customer service is second to none! 783863

This curt 15300 is a beast. Over rated for my f150 but rather be over kill than unsafe. Mounts right up after drilling 6 holes in frame. I feel like its a very safe choice. On the farm you never know what i might need to do with it. Very happy. And shipped out and had it on the 2nd day. Installed in bout an hour. Dull bits otherwise 30 min could of been done. 771507

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch # C15300 Fit a 1997 Ford F-350 Without Removing the Spare Tire
According to Curt, if you install trailer hitch # C15300 on your 1997 Ford F-350, the spare tire will need to be temporarily lowered for hitch installation, but it does not have to be removed. The hitch is designed to fit the larger 37-1/4 inch frames. While you do not have to remove the spare tire, it may need to be repositioned once the hitch is in place. I have included a link to the installation details for reference. The recommended ball mount for this hitch is # 40330 and you can...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 1994 Ford F-250
When measuring the frame width on a vehicle, you will need to measure from the outside of one frame rail to the outside of the other frame rail. It sound like you have the 37-1/4 inch frame on your 1994 Ford F-250. Usually, you see the more narrow frame on cab and chassis models. The CURT Trailer Hitch, # C15300, does not fit vehicles with a 34 inch frame but will fit the 37-1/4 inch frame. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. It is possible that the holes...

  • How to Determine Curt Hitch C15300 Clearance with Rear Skid Plate on 1987 Ford F-150
Curt Class V hitch # C15300 is a confirmed fit on your 1987 Ford F-150. To help you determine if it will be compatible with your skid plate I went to our warehouse and took a measurement of the hitch to find out the distance from the mounting brackets (that bolt to the bottom of your frame rails) down to the center of the crosstube. This dimension you can compare to your frame-to-skid plate dimension to see if the hitch will clear it. The photo I prepared for you shows that from the...

  • Towing Capacity of 2016 Ford F-150 with 5.0L Engine
I took a look at the online towing chart for your 2016 Ford F-150 and it lists a maximum trailer weight of 10,000 pounds for your F-150 model that is equipped with the 5.0L engine, 3:55 axle ratio, and 145 inch wheelbase. I do recommend verifying this information in your copy of the owner's manual or by checking with a local Ford dealer. I am not sure what your truck is already equipped with in terms of towing components so I will recommend all the parts you would need in order to tow...

  • What Does GVWR Mean for a Truck
The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross vehicle mass (GVM) is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers. Maximum trailer weight rating is the heaviest trailer you can tow. So for your truck the heaviest trailer you can tow would be 8,400 lbs regardless of what hitch you use. So you would not be...

  • Is Spare Tire Repositioning Necessary on 1992 Ford F-250 With Curt Hitch C15300?
I spoke with a representative of Curt, who told me that Curt hitch # C15300 may require the repositioning of the spare tire on your 1992 Ford F-250, depending on the width of your spare tire and if you have a short bed or long bed. With a short bed, then you will have to reposition or remove the tire, but with a long bed there is a chance you may not have to if the tire is small enough. As for a solution, you could remove the spare tire altogether, or use the suggested aftermarket repositioner....

  • What is Fifth Wheel Towing Capacity of 2013 Ford F-350 with Diesel Engine
I did some checking and it looks like the towing capacity of your 2013 Ford F-350 short bed with a diesel engine, 4x4 and crew cab is 12,500 lbs. Since you have a short bed truck you'll need a slider hitch to allow you to make tight turns without cab interference. For that I recommend the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550034 because it will automatically slide back as you make tight turns. To install this in the bed of your truck I recommend a custom install kit part # DM8552000-71 because...
