Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ford F-150

Speaker 1: Today in our 2018 Ford F-150, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt Custom-Fit Class IV Trailer Hitch Receiver. Offering the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. The part number is, C14017.Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed. As you can see, we get all the benefits of a Class IV hitch without having to completely change the looks of the back of our truck. We can still keep the real nice clean appearance. Our cross tube remains hidden up here behind the bumper, so you're not going to have to look at that every day when you walk outside.

With it being a Class IV hitch, it has weight ratings. We'll talk about that later, but it still has the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. That going to make it extremely versatile. Whatever you decide on, you'll want to use the 5/8" diameter pin hole to secure all of those items in place. You want to chose an accessory that rated up to what you're going to be hauling.

You want to make sure that your pin and clip is going to be rated for whatever your trailer weight is, and that it's 5/8 of an inch in diameter. Now, for bike racks and cargo carriers, if you want a locking hitch pin, or if you want an anti-rattle bolt to kind of keep them from moving and shaking around, you can go with a Class III there as long again as it's rated for the weight you're going to be using it with. You've got the nice flush reinforcement collar around the ends. It's going to be just inside the edge of the bumper, so you're not going to have any worries about running into or bumping into it. Compared to the Class III's from Curt, it's going to have a much more robust safety chain connection point area. It's a steel plate. It's going to cover the entire bottom of the receiver tube, giving that extra strength but also giving us a lot more support here if we did have an accidental disconnection.

It's still going to work out just fine with your smaller trailers style hooks, for your small utility trailers. As you can see, it's going to work really well for even the largest of clevis hooks you might have on your trailer. Now with this being a Class IV hitch, when talked earlier about the weight ratings being higher than what we typically get with a Class III. In this case, we have a 1,000 pound tongue weight capacity. So that's the maximum downward pressure we can put at our receiver tube opening. We have a 10,000 pound gross trailer weight rating.

That's going to be the total weight of your trailer, and anything you might load up on it. It's also rated for use with weight distribution, so if you have spring bars, or torsion bars set up, the tongue weight ratings going to go up to 1200 pounds, and the gross trailer weight goes to go up to 12,000 pounds. Just be sure to check the owners manual on your F-150 to see what it's rated for, and go off of whichever sets of numbers are lower. Now, a few measurements you'll find healthful for selecting the proper ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier for your application, will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening. We've got about 18 and 3/4 of an inch. Then from the center of our hitch pin hold to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's going to be about three and a quarter. To begin installation, you'll see we're removed our spare tire. We're going to get that out of the way. That allows us easier access to our connection points for our hitch. Then we want to come right here on the back side of the passenger side frame rail. Just inside from the bumper, and if this ground wire is on your vehicle, you want to remove that. Use a 10 millimeter socket. You want to move the bolt completely from it, and then bend that tap out flat. We'll just tuck that out of the way for now. Now, we've got our U-shaped spacer blocks that we need to put in position, and these are going to go over the whole right above where we removed that ground. You'll place them up there. Just like that, you don't want to cover the ground detachment hole. Then with some tape we can get those held in position. Now, these are going to make sure that we've got a nice flat surface for our hitch to mount to.You'll want to just trim out that center section there, so our bolt will pass through. We'll do the same thing for our driver side. Now, we'll grab one of our pull wires. We want to go in that hole, right back here to the back side of the frame. Just like that. We'll pull that out, and we'll put on a square hole spacer block, and we're also going to thread our bolt on. We're going to place the spacer block in the frame. We just want to work that spacer block in the frame rail, gently pull on our wire, and guide our bolt in. Then we want to make sure that they engage one another, and then we can kind of push from the back there and help our bolt through. Then we'll let the whole thing just kind of rest right back in the frame rail. Now, we're going to do that same thing on this hole location, using this as our access hole. So we'll take another square hole spacer block, and we need that just to rest up there for now. This side plate on our hitch is going to come up and that'll be sandwiched between it. Then we'll head over the the passenger side and repeat that process there. With the help of an extra set of hands, we'll get our hitch lifted up into position. You want to place your pull wires through the hitch from the outside towards the middle. Then kind of pull the slack out of them, and gently lift our hitch up into position. Then we'll draw our bolts through and our hitch will actually rest on those.Once you get your pull wires removed you want to put a flange mount on each of your bolts. Now, we want to go through and snug down all of our hardware, and we can torque it to the specifications listed on our instructions. We'll take our ground wire, and we're going to install our bolt through that ring terminal, and then we'll thread it right back into the hole it came out of originally.Once you get your spare tire back up in place, that's going to complete our installation of the Curt Custom-Fit Class IV Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number, C14017, on our 2018 Ford F-150.

I was very happy with the quality of the hitch that I purchased from eTrailer. It fit my 2017 Ford F-150 perfectly. During installation I used 2 heavy duty ratchet straps to hold the hitch in place while installing the bolts, so I wasn't having to support the weight of the hitch at the same time I was trying to line up bolts. That made installation a lot easier. The hitch comes with everything you need for the install, including the wires to pull the bolts through the frame. The hitch arrived very quickly and in great shape. 484375

Great product. Super fast delivery! Very helpful tutorial videos that helped me. Haven’t pulled boat yet, but I’m sure it’s solid. The only suggestion on tutorials is to thread the bolts loose to prevent it jamming up when threading the the holes. Otherwise very helpful. Thanks ! 438714

This product was a breeze to install and all the included hardware worked flawlessly. Only took about 45 minutes with minimal help just to balance the weight of the hitch while working in my gravel driveway laying on a piece of cardboard. 560311

Awsome product, simple installation. Only issue I had was the holes in the frame are to small for spacers on the rear of the frame. Ended up slipping the spacers in at the top end of the frame and the carriage bolts through the holes. No modifications necessary. 496746

2017 Ford F-150

I just bought a slightly used 2017 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 and to my surprise it didn't have a trailer hitch receiver installed from the factory. I ran the carfax and learned it belonged to a rental company before I bought it and I think most rental company's order them that way from the factory or have them removed for liability reasons. Anyways I can't have a truck let alone a 4x4 truck without a trailer hitch so my search was on and I came across etrailer and this Curt Custom Fit Class IV hitch it looked great, easy to install and the price couldn't be beat. Well I am glad to say the it is all of the above and more. I had this hitch installed in 30 minutes by myself and couldn't be happier with it. A couple of tips I would like to point out to help with installation. Tip#1 The first thing the instructions tell you to do is "If present, remove the grounding cable from the rear of the passenger side frame rail." "Then to remove the spare tire" This is wrong the first thing you need to do is lower and remove the spare tire then "If present, remove the grounding cable from the rear of the passenger side frame rail." Tip#2 Do not tighten the four main bolts until after you have reinstalled the ground wire with the new longer bolt. You need to be able to still slightly move the hitch back and forth a little to line up the hole for the ground wire bolt. I learned this the hard way and had to loosen and re tighten the bolts. 501819

2017 F150 XLT. The rear spacer plates for inside frame would not fit through access holes on frame. I spent a long time, first, figuring out what the hell the problem was, and then on phone with customer service who couldn't resolve issue. I was then told a tech would call me back "today or tomorrow." Still no call. It's the dead of winter and I was trying to do this outside on a decent day today. So... I had to take the spacers and grind them down on edges to get them to fit through access holes. The spacers are so imprecisely stamped, they would not fit in access hole. A big waste of a few hours of my time. 470586

John, thank you for your review. The installation instructions state you can either use the fish wire to fish the carriage bolts and spacers through the access holes or the end of the frame rail. Depending on the vehicle it is sometimes easier to just go through the end of the frame with the spacers instead of trying to get them through the access holes. If you do not want to go through the frame then you can always use a file to slightly enlarge the access holes to make it easier. We do not recommend modifying the hardware.

Would have been 5 star! We chose the free option for shipping and I was very impressed that it arrived much quicker than expected (a couple days). However, the packaging it arrived it was not adequate for the hitch as it broke through the walls of the box in a couple areas. Also there wasn't a packing list depicting a breakdown of what was supposed to be inside the box so if something was lost during transportation we would have no way of knowing until we try to install it. Other than that the hitch seems to be fine and we will know more when we try to install it onto our truck. I would still buy from here in the future as this may have been a chance occurrence. If next time is better than I will definitely give 5 stars! 527005

I'm not mechanically inclined in anyway, but the instructional videos are extremely helpful, and the provided hardware is of high quality materials. The videos helped me install these hitches on a Honda CRV and a Ford F150. Taking my sweet time it took about an hour per vehicle. The polish on the hitch is intact a year later. 662597

I don't know where to start when reviewing this company. First, the products they sell are top notch, at prices no one can beat. Secondly their online support with videos and detailed installation procedures is "unmatched" by any online company. If they can't walk or talk you through it, it probably can't be done! But perhaps the best quality product they have is their staff. When you call they are most courteous, extremely helpful, and will go above and beyond making your transaction right. I have purchased from etrailer numerous times for these very reasons. And my latest purchase ran into shipping problems (not etrailers fault) and yet Stacey A., Greg & others whose names I forgot (my apologies) made it right. Bottom line, as a frequent online shopper, I can only wish that other online companies would look at etrailers business model and choose to emulate them. This is how online SHOULD be. Thanks again etrailer.com 638168

First off, I was pleased to see the heavily discounted price for 3-5 day delivery when I ordered this hitch. I ordered it on Wednesday and expected to receive it by Monday or Tuesday of the following week, but it actually arrived the same Friday! Other than the two large holes in the box when delivered, the hitch was in perfect condition. Installation was super easy. I had reviewed the video on the Etrailer web site several times, and it installed just like they showed, with one exception. In addition to the spacers at the rear most end of the frame rail, there are two additional ones included that go between the hitch and the frame at the forward holes. Luckily i had seen another video that actually showed these being installed as they are also not mentioned in the written instructions that came with the hitch (but if you look closely at the picture you can see them), but are needed to fill the gap. The installation took right about an hour with a little help from my wife who fed the pull wires through the holes while I lifted the hitch into place. I would highly recommend this hitch for the price and the ease of installation. 600598

Best price and fast service and shipping. I ordered Tuesday morning and received Wednesday afternoon. One state away helps. Saved $200. Called local trailer rental place and the wanted $400 to buy and install hitch on my 2018 F150. Bought everything needed and did it myself for $200. Bought the class 4 hitch and watched their online video for a class three hitch same process to install and did it in about 45 minutes . Did all the install work of bolts and spacers and supplier install wires and had my son help hold in place. Pulled bolts and spacers with wire thru and added nuts to the two bolts and then did other two and tighten and all set. The video from etrailer made it easy peasey. 598093

Hitch arrived fairly well packed, but with some exposed metal. Maybe due to S&H? Bolts and spacers too large to insert into frame openings as shown in video. However, they will fit if you insert them thru other available openings ( check side facing rear bumper, also check openings at top or bottom of frame upright). I used three heavy duty zip ties to suspend hitch to make it a one man job. Hats off to those who installed it in 45 minutes! My install took considerably longer, inserting/fishing the bolts being the most time consuming part. Overall, not too bad. 570203

  • For your 2017 Ford F-150 you will need to upgrade to a heavier duty hitch like the Curt part # C14017 which has a 10k capacity and is designed to fit versions of your truck that have the factory hitch like yours. Check out the install video I attached as well. A weight distribution system would be a great option as you will be well into the towing capacity of your truck. For a tongue weight of 700 lbs the Strait Line part # RP66083 which has a tongue weight range of 400-800 lbs and has...

  • Trailer Hitch with Most Capacity for 2019 Ford F-150 Truck
  • The trailer hitch with the most capacity that fits your 2019 Ford F-150 is the Curt # C14017, which has a 1,000 lb tongue weight capacity and 10,000 lb towing capacity. This is a Class IV hitch with a 2 inch receiver that is a complete bolt-on installation which does not require any type of drilling into your truck's frame. This hitch has a mostly hidden crosstube, as you can see in the accompanying photo, so your 2019 F-150 can maintain its factory appearance. The Curt # C14017...

  • High Capacity Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Ford F-150 with Factory Hitch
  • For a similar Curt hitch that is designed for the 2015 Ford F-150 models that do have the factory hitch you would want the part # C14016 which is a confirmed fit. It has a towing capacity of 10k total trailer weight and 1,000 lbs tongue weight when not used with a weight distribution system. I attached a picture that shows the hitch sitting underneath the factory hitch.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ford F-150 without Factory Hitch
  • For your 2018 Ford F-150 I recommend the Curt Class IV Trailer Hitch Receiver # C14017 because it has the highest weight capacities among the hitches available for your truck (10,000 towing and 1,000 tongue) and also features a nice hidden design where only the 2 inch receiver will be visible. It will use existing holes in the truck's frame for a no-drill installation and is made right here in the USA. I have attached an installation video on the 2018 F-150 that you can also use for...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Ford F-150 for Towing 10k Trailer
  • For a 10,000 lb rated trailer hitch confirmed to fit your 2015 Ford F-150 without a factory hitch you would want the part # C14017. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. You will need a brake controller to activate the brakes of your trailer. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ford F-150
  • For your 2018 Ford F-150 that does not have a factory hitch I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C14017. This Class IV hitch is confirmed to fit your F-150 and will use existing holes in the truck's frame for a no-drill installation. This is a heavy-duty trailer hitch that features a 2 inch receiver and a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. You will also want to check the towing capacity of your truck by taking a look at your copy of the owner's manual or Ford's trailer towing guide....

  • Bumper Clearance on Curt Trailer HItches for 2018 Ford F-150
  • The Curt Class IV # C14017, Class III # C13118, and Class III # C13903 trailer hitches will all have almost identical bumper and ground clearance dimensions when they are mounted under your 2018 Ford F-150. There will be a distance of around 3-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the rear bumper. What separates the models from each other are their Class ratings and their physical appearance when installed. Between the three options I recommend going...

  • Towing Capacity of 2016 Ford F-150 with 5.0L Engine
  • I took a look at the online towing chart for your 2016 Ford F-150 and it lists a maximum trailer weight of 10,000 pounds for your F-150 model that is equipped with the 5.0L engine, 3:55 axle ratio, and 145 inch wheelbase. I do recommend verifying this information in your copy of the owner's manual or by checking with a local Ford dealer. I am not sure what your truck is already equipped with in terms of towing components so I will recommend all the parts you would need in order to tow...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch that Fits 2018 Ford F-150 with Factory Hitch
  • Curt has a hitch that does fit your 2018 Ford F-150 with a factory hitch with the part # C14016 which fits below the factory hitch (see picture), but the part # C14017 does not fit versions of your truck that do have the factory hitch.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor
  • For a trailer hitch receiver confirmed to fit your 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor, I recommend using the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C14017. If you already have a hitch and are looking to upgrade then you will want to use part # C14016 instead. Both of the above trailer hitch receivers have a max gross trailer weight capacity of 10,000 lbs but you will need to subtract the gross vehicle weight (GVW) from your gross combined weight rating (GCWR) in order to determine the towing capacity of...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Weight Distribution System for 2015 Ford F-150 with Travel Trailer
  • If you have the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13118, then I recommend upgrading your hitch to the Class IV # C14017 which is rated for up to 1,200 lbs when using weight distribution. The reason is because weight distribution is based on loaded trailer tongue weight as well as any cargo weight behind the rear axle of the truck. This can easily increase your loaded trailer tongue weight and put you beyond the max capacity of your hitch when using weight distribution. For your weight...

  • Is an Aftermarket Transmission Cooler Needed for Towing with a 2016 Ford F-150 Without Tow Package
  • According to a brochure from Ford regarding the trailer tow package for a 2016 Ford F-150 it includes a 4-Way/7-Way connector combination, a Class IV trailer hitch, their Smart Trailer Tow Connector, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, auxiliary transmission cooler, and upgraded front stabilizer bar. I can help you with some of those things but there are things like the Smart Trailer Tow Connector, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and front stabilizer bar that you would need to contact your local Ford...

  • Compatibility of Trailer Hitch with 2018 Ford F-150 Max Towing Capacity
  • Unfortunately there is not a Class V hitch rated for over 12000 lbs towing from any of our manufacturers for your 2018 Ford F-150. The best hitch we currently offer # C14017 is rated for 12,000 lbs and 1200 lbs tongue weight when used with weight distribution and is made by Curt in the USA. Based on your specifications you must have the 3.5L GTDI V6 SuperCrew with 20 inch tires and wheels and the 3.55 axle ratio because that is the only option rated higher than this hitch. If so, unfortunately...

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch # C14017 Fit a 2016 Ford F-150 with Aftermarket Rear Bumper
  • Comparing your rear bumper with the stock one on the 2016 Ford F-150 it is hard to tell if yours hangs down any further than the stock bumper. If it does not hang lower then you will be able to use a trailer hitch. If it does hang lower then the bumper would have to be modified or replaced to install a hitch such as # C14017.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ford F-150
  • For your 2018 Ford F-150 I recommend the Curt Class IV Receiver Hitch # C14017 because of its superior weight ratings, concealed crosstube for a nice OEM appearance, and the fact that it's made right here in the USA. This Class IV hitch features a towing weight capacity of 10,000 pounds and a tongue weight limit of 1,000 pounds. Keep in mind though that you will still need to adhere to the capacities of your F-150 as listed in the owner's manual if they are lower. The design on this...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2017 Ford F-150 for Minimal Crossbar Visibility
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Class IV - 2" # C14017 will not be completely hidden, however the majority of it will be behind your bumper for a very clean look and with really good ground clearance. I've attached a video of this installation to assist. Your truck came with trailer wiring, so let me know if you need further assistance with that. For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount # BWTS10037B. This ball mount comes with both the 2 inch and 2-5/16...

  • Will Multi-Fit Class IV Trailer Hitch Fit 2018 Ford F-150
  • We do not currently carry the Reese Towpower Multi-Fit Trailer Hitches so I cannot be sure if the particular Class IV hitch you are looking at will fit your 2018 Ford F-150. I will say though that multi-fit trailer hitches are going to require a much more involved installation process that will likely require drilling into the truck's frame or other vehicle modifications. For a Class IV hitch that is confirmed to fit your 2018 Ford F-150 and won't require any drilling I recommend looking...

  • We have a nice selection of custom trailer hitches available for the 2018 Ford F-150 that isn't equipped with the factory hitch. This custom hitch will bolt right up to existing holes in the truck's frame for a no-drill installation that should only take around 40 minutes. I have attached...
