Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Ford F-150 - Curt

Today on our 2014 Ford F150 we'll be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class 4 Part Number C14002. Now here's what our new trailer hitch looks on our F150, it is a class 4 hitch so it is heavy duty. Has a nice big steel to the sides of it, nice heavy welds that attach it and nice black powder coat finish, that's going to resist corrosion and rust. Being a class 4 hitch, it does have a 1,000 pound tongue capacity and a 10,000 pound towing capacity. With a weight distribution hitch it bumps it up to 1,200 pounds of tongue and 12,000 pounds of towing capability. With this hitch you also want to the specifications of your vehicle to see what the maximum towing capability is. You always want to go with the lower, whether the hitch or the vehicle rating.

It is a 2 inch by 2 inch opening and it has a nice thick lip here around the receiver tube to give it added strength. A 5/8 pinhole that's easily accessible from either side in your chain tie downs that you can reach when you hook your trailer up. It is a nice square tube so it's going to give your truck a nice look. It does hang down a little bit underneath the bumper, but it still gives the truck a nice look from underneath compared to a factory hitch. Now we'll go ahead and give some measurements that will help you choose an accessory such as ball mounts, bike racks and cargo carriers. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper is 3 and 1/2 inches.

From the top of the receiver tube to the ground, it's 17 inches. Now we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. Now to start our installation we'll go ahead and point out the attachment points on our vehicle. Here on the back side of our frame there's a oval hole that faces the rear of our vehicle, that will be the one attachment point. Then if you go up the frame a little bit, there's a round hole here, that'll be the second attachment point here for our hitch. Now here for our back attachment point that faces the rear of our vehicle.

We'll go ahead and use one of the hex head bolts and a flat washer that'll go through the hitch and through our frame and then attached with a flange nut here on the back. That'll be for this location and for the one towards the front of our vehicle, it'll be the hex head bolt and a flat washer. Which will go through the hitch and through the frame, and then there will be 2 flat washers to take up the gap here in the frame. You'll go ahead and put that through there, your hitch will be in between the one washer and the 2 washers here. Your hitch will be like that, the 2 flat washers will take up that circle gap in the frame. Then on the back side it'll get the square block that comes with the kit and a flange nut and that'll be all the hardware for the 4 of my locations.

It'll be the same on both sides of our vehicle, the mounting locations and the hardware. Now we'll go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us set our hitch into position and install our rear hardware. Now with our rear hardware installed, we'll go ahead and install the hardware here on the side of our frame. We'll go ahead and take our rear hardware, feed that through our hitch, through our hole. Install the 2 flat washers that take up the gap. Let's go put on our square block and a flange nut. We can go ahead and repeat the same process for the passenger's side. Then we can go ahead and tighten down our using a 3/4 inch socket and a 3/4 inch wrench to do that. Now that we have those tightened down we can go ahead and torque them as specified in the instructions. Now with all our hardware tightened and torqued, we're ready to hit the road. That'll do it for the Curt Trailer Hitch Class 4 Part Number C14002, on our 2014 Ford 150. .

This was one of the easiest and best experiences I have ever had ordering something online. It arrived within 2-3 days and the installation was a snap. Exact fit for my truck. Took longer to find 2 3/4 inch wrenches than to install it on my 2010 Ford F-150. Instructions were very clear. Time estimate to install this was 30 minutes, I bet it didn't take 15 minutes to actually install it. The 30 minutes included finding my tools and cleaning up the box. I also ordered a cargo carrier and it actually took longer to put it together than to install the hitch. But, only because it had more bolts. It was also very easy to put together and instruction were very clear. All bolts and hardware were with the shipment which, was amazing. The cargo carrier was used this weekend to carry camping gear turkey hunting, to free up some extra space in the camper shell of my truck where we sleep. The carrier worked very well and allowed me and my son to pull into to a campsite late and not have to unload the camper shell in order to go to sleep. Which, was a huge blessing since it was pouring down rain when we arrived Friday night. Love both of these products and would definitely recommend this site and these products to anyone needing any type of trailer hitch, cargo carrier or accessories. Thank you for a great experience. 187099

This is the forth trailer hitch I have installed on four different trucks. It is the best quality of them all and would recommend ti to anyone. Also purchased a Curt Trailer Brake Controller at the same time which was easy to install and works better then any I have previously owned , Great online source and people to work with.

Hitch seems very well made. Welds are uniform, gussets and tabs are heavier than the truck frame. Bolts are grade 8. Fit was close with enough space to install easy. Installed on a 2013 F150 truck. I did not bother to remove the spare tire. The reason I did not give a 5 is minor. The one page of Instructions are technically correct but I feel lack a warning on installation. etrailer as part of the order sent an email with a question hot line which might alleviate the concern but I didn't bother to find out. The issue, is hard to explain in words and I only note it so others can be careful. The hitch is attached to the truck with four grade 8 bolts. Two of the bolts use two large holes in the frame (ACCESS HOLE on instructions). They are much larger than the 1/2 bolts. So to use these mount points they create a bushing out of two round washers and a large square washer (see picture). This is an adequate design if correctly installed. The problem is with the tolerances on the parts if you’re not careful when tightening one of the round washers may pinch on the edge of the access hole. It will seem tight (110 ft lbs is a lot of torque) but under trailering load a slight shift will move this washer and cause the bolt to be loose. The instruction say to "periodically check to be sure all fasteners are tight...". How many do? I noticed a slight space between the hitch and the truck frame when the bolts were tight and didn’t like it. What I did was back off on the bolts and wiggled the hitch until I felt the washers center in the larger frame hole then completed the torqueing to spec. I also used LOC-TITE on the bolts. So if you see any space between the hitch and the truck frame when the bolts are tight you might have this issue and have a loose bolt later that may go unnoticed. 83940

My husband wanted to haul some heavy equipment from OK to TX but the truck to be used did not have a trailer hitch. A friend recommended etrailer.com. We were amazed at the quantity and quality of products. We ordered a trailer hitch and soon received an email that our shipping status had been upgraded free of charge. The hitch arrived faster than a jackrabbit on moonshine. My husband said it was the nicest hitch he'd ever seen, and the install was smooth. Unexpectedly, he found the perfect lathe for sale in Wisconsin. He just left to pick it up and has total faith in this hitch. Thanks for the great price, great product, and great communication. We are fans forever. 117362

The receiver hitch I ordered from you came much quicker than I expected and I really appreciate the fast shipping. Luckily I had a little free time and got right after it. I started the installation at 3:49 pm and took the completion photo at 4:04 pm. I was amazed at how well the hitch was engineered to fit and how quick and easy it was for me to do. Even though I was alone and working in my grass yard. Thank you for your fast service 148577

I ordered this hitch on a Wednesday night, I chose the free shipping option instead of the more speedy 3 to 5 day paid for option. It arrived on my door step by that Friday at 11 a.m.! Less than 48 hrs. later! The quality of packaging was excellent. It came in a well built box completely protected. A side note, I used to work at UPS and saw many a trailer hitch come through with virtually no packaging. The installation was easy as it gets. I watched the excellent installation video, although I did not really need it. Took longer to get the tools out than it did to install. I was by myself so I used my hydraulic jack to lift and hold the hitch in place while I easily bolted the four bolts on. Etrailer far exceeded my expectations. 185598

Package came pretty quick. Just got done installing it. Pretty simple bolt on construction. Nothing hard. I did have to lower the spare tire to get the torque wrench on the back bolts, but it says in the description you may have to do that. At this point I am happy. We’ll see over time how it holds up, but I’m confident that it’ll give me years of reliable service. 490749

Good, Sturdy, heavy looking tow hitch. Hard to put up alone but feasible. I reckon it will do exactly what it says on the tin, pull weight without warping, bending or breaking. Just perfect for pulling a new 2 horse trailer and RV trailer. I used frog paint tape to secure the "hole spacers" in place while tightening the hitch to the truck. this was the only way I could get the spacers to stay in place (fitting it on my own). I also found it hard to tighten to the 110ft lb torque due to the lack of space between nuts, bolts and vehicle chassis. Although my tool selection is limited. Given the right tools , it would be easy i'm sure. 458891

Ordering process was quick and easy! The hitch came on time as promised. Installation was easy and it fit perfectly. Did it by myself with the exception of a little help from a floor jack. I left the spare in place I just had to loosen it up a bit to allow space for my torque wrench. Only very minor gripe is your parts sticker is hard to remove; it would be much easier to remove if it was vinyl. 348467

  • Towing capacity of a 2014 Ford F-150 4x4 SuperCrew 145 Inch Wheelbase 3.5L EcoBoost 3.55 Rear End
  • I looked up the owners manual for the 2014 Ford F-150. On a 4x4 SuperCrew with the 3.5 liter EcoBoost, 145 inch wheelbase, and 3.55 rear end the gross combined weight rating will either by 13,400 pounds (for limited models) or 15,500 pounds. If you subtract the gross vehicle weight rating of 7,200 pounds then the max you can tow will either be 6,200 pounds or 8,300 pounds. • There are a few things to consider to determine if you can safely tow your 6,500 lb boat with your 2010 Ford F-150. The first thing to determine is the towing capacity of your truck. This information should be listed in your owners manual. If the towing capacity of your truck is lower than 6,500 lbs, then I would not recommend towing your boat at all with your truck. Towing capacities range from 5,000 lbs to 9,000 lbs on the Ford F-150, so it is important that you check the capacity for...

  • Hitch Extension and Weight Distribution System Recommendations for 2013 Ford F-150 Towing Trailer
  • Almost all hitch adapters and extenders have the side-effect of reducing your hitch's tongue weight (TW) and gross trailer weight capacities by as much as 50-percent. This is true for the 18-inch hitch extension for 2-inch hitches # HE18 from Hidden Hitch. This extender tube fits into a 2-inch hitch and provides 18-inches of extension to its 2-inch receiver opening. All other things being equal the shorter extension is the better extension. All 2-inch extenders are shown on the included...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Recommendation for 2009 Ford F150
  • In order to get a square receiver for y our 2009 Ford F150, you'll need to install a frame mounted receiver hitch. The good news is we have a Class IV available as part # C14002 that has a 10000 towing/1000 lb tongue weight capacity for a reasonable price. Once the hitch is installed, you'll have additional capacity up to the towing capacity of the vehicle. You'll also be able to use a ball mount that will put your trailer at the proper height so it'll tow level. The FAQ article I've...

  • Can a 2014 Ford F-150 4x4 V6 Ecoboost with Tow Package Tow 5205 to 7500 lb Travel Trailer?
  • Your 2014 Ford F-150 4x4 Ecoboost is rated for towing between 7300 and 11,300 depending on what other components are on your truck. Axle Ratio, gross combined weight rating, wheel base, and cab style are all factors. If you want to give me that information, I can give you your total towing capacity, but you can look inside your door jamb to find your total combined towing capacity as well as the gross vehicle weight rating of your vehicle, so you can determine the towing capacity already...

  • Recommended Aftermarket Hitch for 2014 Ford F-250 STX 4X4 SuperCrew with Factory Hitch
  • Trailer tongue weight (TW) is usually in the range of 10-15-percent of trailer gross weight. A loaded trailer of 5000-lbs will typically have a TW of 500-750-lbs. Power boats often have a lower TW since the heavier part - the motor - is well to the rear of the trailer. You can check your existing factory hitch's safety sticker to see its rated capacity when weight distribution (WD) is used. There is a chance you do not need to replace your hitch, just add a WD system. You may want to...

  • The Class lV trailer hitch that is designed to fit your 2011 F-150 is the Curt Hitch, part # C14002. This hitch has a 2 inch receiver opening. I went to the warehouse and measured the receiver material. It measures 1/4 inch thick. I measured a Class lll hitch as well and found the same measurement for the receiver tube. These hitches have been tested to be able to at least handle the capacity they are listed for. You want to make sure you do not exceed the capacity of the truck...

  • Can a Trailer Hitch with Higher Tongue Weight Capacity Install on a 2014 Ford F-150 w/Factory Hitch
  • I did some checking and in the owner's manual for the 2014 Ford F-150 it indicates a gross trailer weight capacity of 5,000 pounds UNLESS the truck has the heavy duty trailer towing package. If it does have the heavy duty towing package it does not give a value for the max tongue weight but just says 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. Then there are tables that show the various gross combined weights of the various models of the 2014 F-150. Which doesn't make too much sense since...
