Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Ford F-150 - Curt

Today on our 2014 Ford F150 we'll be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class 4 Part Number C14002. Now here's what our new trailer hitch looks on our F150, it is a class 4 hitch so it is heavy duty. Has a nice big steel to the sides of it, nice heavy welds that attach it and nice black powder coat finish, that's going to resist corrosion and rust. Being a class 4 hitch, it does have a 1,000 pound tongue capacity and a 10,000 pound towing capacity. With a weight distribution hitch it bumps it up to 1,200 pounds of tongue and 12,000 pounds of towing capability. With this hitch you also want to the specifications of your vehicle to see what the maximum towing capability is. You always want to go with the lower, whether the hitch or the vehicle rating.

It is a 2 inch by 2 inch opening and it has a nice thick lip here around the receiver tube to give it added strength. A 5/8 pinhole that's easily accessible from either side in your chain tie downs that you can reach when you hook your trailer up. It is a nice square tube so it's going to give your truck a nice look. It does hang down a little bit underneath the bumper, but it still gives the truck a nice look from underneath compared to a factory hitch. Now we'll go ahead and give some measurements that will help you choose an accessory such as ball mounts, bike racks and cargo carriers. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper is 3 and 1/2 inches.

From the top of the receiver tube to the ground, it's 17 inches. Now we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. Now to start our installation we'll go ahead and point out the attachment points on our vehicle. Here on the back side of our frame there's a oval hole that faces the rear of our vehicle, that will be the one attachment point. Then if you go up the frame a little bit, there's a round hole here, that'll be the second attachment point here for our hitch. Now here for our back attachment point that faces the rear of our vehicle.

We'll go ahead and use one of the hex head bolts and a flat washer that'll go through the hitch and through our frame and then attached with a flange nut here on the back. That'll be for this location and for the one towards the front of our vehicle, it'll be the hex head bolt and a flat washer. Which will go through the hitch and through the frame, and then there will be 2 flat washers to take up the gap here in the frame. You'll go ahead and put that through there, your hitch will be in between the one washer and the 2 washers here. Your hitch will be like that, the 2 flat washers will take up that circle gap in the frame. Then on the back side it'll get the square block that comes with the kit and a flange nut and that'll be all the hardware for the 4 of my locations.

It'll be the same on both sides of our vehicle, the mounting locations and the hardware. Now we'll go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us set our hitch into position and install our rear hardware. Now with our rear hardware installed, we'll go ahead and install the hardware here on the side of our frame. We'll go ahead and take our rear hardware, feed that through our hitch, through our hole. Install the 2 flat washers that take up the gap. Let's go put on our square block and a flange nut. We can go ahead and repeat the same process for the passenger's side. Then we can go ahead and tighten down our using a 3/4 inch socket and a 3/4 inch wrench to do that. Now that we have those tightened down we can go ahead and torque them as specified in the instructions. Now with all our hardware tightened and torqued, we're ready to hit the road. That'll do it for the Curt Trailer Hitch Class 4 Part Number C14002, on our 2014 Ford 150. .

I ordered this hitch on a Wednesday night, I chose the free shipping option instead of the more speedy 3 to 5 day paid for option. It arrived on my door step by that Friday at 11 a.m.! Less than 48 hrs. later! The quality of packaging was excellent. It came in a well built box completely protected. A side note, I used to work at UPS and saw many a trailer hitch come through with virtually no packaging. The installation was easy as it gets. I watched the excellent installation video, although I did not really need it. Took longer to get the tools out than it did to install. I was by myself so I used my hydraulic jack to lift and hold the hitch in place while I easily bolted the four bolts on. Etrailer far exceeded my expectations. 185598

I must have received a defective hitch. The mounting brackets were bent inwards by an extra inch not allowing the hitch to slide into place as it should. What should have been a 15 minute job turned into a 1.5 hour job. After beating the brackets with a deadblow hammer they bent to where they should have been. The box arrived in good condition so it appears to have been a manufacturing defect. The hitch looks nice now that it is installed I just did not anticipate the extra work. 673660

Comments
When a trailer hitch is constructed, softer steel is used in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. Unfortunately, this flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. Due to the fact that the box was in good condition, it would seem that the hitch was bent during shipping from the manufacturer to our facility. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

My husband wanted to haul some heavy equipment from OK to TX but the truck to be used did not have a trailer hitch. A friend recommended etrailer.com. We were amazed at the quantity and quality of products. We ordered a trailer hitch and soon received an email that our shipping status had been upgraded free of charge. The hitch arrived faster than a jackrabbit on moonshine. My husband said it was the nicest hitch he'd ever seen, and the install was smooth. Unexpectedly, he found the perfect lathe for sale in Wisconsin. He just left to pick it up and has total faith in this hitch. Thanks for the great price, great product, and great communication. We are fans forever. 117362

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • Can a Trailer Hitch with Higher Tongue Weight Capacity Install on a 2014 Ford F-150 w/Factory Hitch
I did some checking and in the owner's manual for the 2014 Ford F-150 it indicates a gross trailer weight capacity of 5,000 pounds UNLESS the truck has the heavy duty trailer towing package. If it does have the heavy duty towing package it does not give a value for the max tongue weight but just says 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. Then there are tables that show the various gross combined weights of the various models of the 2014 F-150. Which doesn't make too much sense since...

  • How Much Towing Capacity is Considered Adequate
Travel trailers of any given length - such as a 22-footer - can vary considerably in both their dry (unloaded) weight and in their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) which is their maximum fully-loaded weight capacity. Newer trailers may use lightweight composite materials in their construction while older trailers made from more traditional materials can tend to weigh more. Either way you want to use a combination of tow vehicle and trailer such that your vehicle will not be stressed,...

I can help you figure out if the setup your friend is looking at will work well for the 2016 Dutchman Camper. You are correct about having the correct equipment to help prevent any contact with the truck and camper, even in an emergency situation. Let's start with the hitch, the Curt # C14002 is a great hitch for his truck if it didn't already come with one. Its weight capacity is the highest among the ones offered for his vehicle but its important to note that it will not increase...

  • Curt Class IV Trailer Hitch Receiver Compatibility on 2011 Ford F-150
If you remove your factory trailer hitch on your 2011 Ford F-150, you can use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C14002. That hitch is rated for up to 10K without weight distribution or up to 12K with weight distribution, which means you are most likely limited by your vehicle's towing and tongue weight capacity when using this hitch.

  • Does Fifth Wheel Hitch Weight Count for Payload Capacity
You are correct that the 1,420 lbs of hitch weight does count towards the payload capacity on a truck such as your 2014 Ford F-150. Unfortunately there is no way you can increase this capacity so if you are looking at a fifth wheel with a pin weight in the 1,500 lb range you would need to invest in a different truck that has a larger payload capacity. I realize that is not an inexpensive solution but safely towing a fifth wheel often requires a heavy duty truck.

Your 2014 Ford F-150 4x4 Ecoboost is rated for towing between 7300 and 11,300 depending on what other components are on your truck. Axle Ratio, gross combined weight rating, wheel base, and cab style are all factors. • Can Trailer Hitch be Replaced for Larger Capacity in 2010 Ford F-150?
The hitch that is currently on your 2010 Ford F-150 can be replaced for one with a larger capacity, though you should keep in mind that this will not increase the towing capacity of your truck in any way, including the tongue weight. The Curt # C14002 is a Class IV hitch that has a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 lbs and max tongue weight capacity of 1,000 lbs and would work if your truck can handle the amount of weight you are looking to tow. You would have access to the spare of the vehicle with the Curt hitch part # C14002 installed on your 2014 Ford F-150. Your truck should have trailer wiring on it already. It either has a 7-way or a 4-way connector. It is possible that there is nothing there currently but I'd need you to check what you have there first to determine the best route to install the correct wiring.
