Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Ford F-150 - Curt

Today on our 2014 Ford F-150, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt Multi Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number is C13903. Here's what the hitch is going to look like installed on your F-150. This is going to be a hitch that's even with the outer edge of the bumper, so it's not going really going to stick out. Definitely going to see it across the rear of the vehicle here, and the side plates that come down where our crosstube bolts into. Those are going to remain pretty visible. Now, this is a Class III hitch, so it gives us the 2" x 2" receiver tube opening. It's going to make it very, very versatile. It has very high tow weight ratings on it.

The tongue weight rating is going to be 800 pounds, so that's the maximum downward force we could put here at our receiver tube opening. The gross trailer weight rating is going to be 8,000 pounds. That would be the combined weight of your trailer and then anything you we're to load up on it. The hitch is rated for use with weight distribution if you use weight distribution. The tongue weight's going to go up to 1,200 pounds, and the gross trailer weight rating it's going to go up to 12,000 pounds. Now, this hitch comes in three pieces.

It's going to make installation a little bit easier for us if you choose to install it in three pieces. Now, whether you're using a ball mount bike rack or cargo carrier, we're going to have a 5/8 diameter hole here. That's what we'll use to secure our items with. We want to choose Class III rated accessories, and you'll see there's plenty of room around there for whatever type you might want to use, whether it's an anti-rattle bolt, maybe a locking hitch pin, or just a pin and click. The safety chain connection points are going to work out for your smaller style hooks. I wouldn't recommend this hitch if you have the great big clevis hooks.

While they will attach, they're probable going to kind of bind and not hang down naturally. Now, a couple measurements that'll be helpful when it comes time to select your ball mount bike rack or hitch cargo carrier. Will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening, we've got about 19-1/4". Then, from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outer most edge of our bumper, it's about 3-1/2. It's a great idea to get yourself an extra set of hands. Of course, you're going to loosely attach your side plates on and take one of our 1/2" bolts with the 1/2" washer. That's going to go through, and then when we put it up in place, it's going to be going right through this bumper bracket.

We're going to use the appropriate 9/16 flash washers to get the spacing that we'll need, so we'll slide those on our bolt. We'll bring it right up into the bumper bracket. Just thread on that flange nut to hold it. Do the same thing on both sides. Then, we can move to our rear attachment points, which will be right here. For our rear attachment point, we're going to use the same style bolt and flat washer. That goes through from the outside. Inside, we got our two 9/16 flat washers that takes up that gap in our frame. We have our square hole spacer block and another flange nut. We're going to do that same thing on both sides of the vehicle as well. Now, we're going to rotate the back of the hitch up. We want to make sure that our washers are in that hole like we had before. Just take a look, make sure it's level, and then I like to snug these down first. That's going to draw that plate over. It'll keep our washers in position. Now, we'll run through, snug up our hardware, and then we'll torque it down to the specifications listed in the instructions. Now, we'll head through had get them all torqued down. I like to start with the ones that connect to the frame and then take care of that center section. Once those are tightened down, we can move on to the center section to the brackets. Now, as you'll seek we did remove the spare tire for this installation. It's recommended. It's just going to make it easier to get to stuff and certainly makes it easier for you guys to see. If you've done that, you want to replace that at this point and the hitch is going to be ready for use. That's going to complete our installation of the Curt Multi Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13903, on our 2014 Ford F-150.

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Height and Weight Capacity of Curt Hitch on 2016 Ford F-150
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13903 is a Class III hitch that is rated up to 8,000 pounds. Or up to 12,000 pounds if you're using a weight distribution system. It is designed to fit your 2016 Ford F-150. The # C13903 sits about 2 inches under the F-150's bumper where the Class IV hitch # C14016 is about 5 inches under the bumper because it will fit with a factory hitch installed.

  • Bumper Clearance on Curt Trailer HItches for 2018 Ford F-150
  • The Curt Class IV # C14017, Class III # C13118, and Class III # C13903 trailer hitches will all have almost identical bumper and ground clearance dimensions when they are mounted under your 2018 Ford F-150. There will be a distance of around 3-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the rear bumper. What separates the models from each other are their Class ratings and their physical appearance when installed. Between the three options I recommend going...

  • Trailer Towing Capacity of 2019 Ford F-150 with 3.5 liter EcoBoost
  • The 2019 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine has more than enough capacity to tow a 6,300 lb trailer like you have. The 2WD versions look to have a capacity of 11,100 lbs and the 4WD models 9,400 which easily would handle the weight of a 6,300 lb trailer. The Curt hitch you referenced does not fit your truck but we do have the # C14016 which is a Class IV hitch that fits if you do have the factory hitch, or part # C13903 which fits if you do not have the factory hitch.

  • Front Hitch Recommendation for 2012 Ford F-150 that Allows Tow Hooks to Be Left On
  • For your 2012 Ford F-150 the Curt front hitch you want is actually the part # C31068 as the hitch you mentioned does not fit your vehicle. This hitch does allow you to keep the front hitch and tow hooks.
