Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2020 Ford Ranger

Ryan: Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today on our 2020 Ford Ranger, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver. When it comes to trailer hitches, one of the common questions that our customers ask is if their spare tire is going to work with the hitch in place Just to give you an example and show you that this is going to have no problem keeping that spare tire up here, while being able to use your trailer hitch still. Now, compared to some of the other hitches out there, this one is going to stick out a little bit further here, closer to the back of the truck, but it is still going to sit more or less just about flush with the edge of the bumper. Now, a couple upsides of that is that it's going to be easy to access to connect or disconnect any of your accessories, and if you're into fold-up accessories, this one's going to be really good, giving us an extra clearance, that way you don't have to worry about any interference or contact whenever you do fold the accessories up.Now, one of the things I like, especially with this being a truck hitch, is that this is still going to give us a nice clean look. It's really not going to be all that noticeable back here. Many of our Ranger customers use their trucks to do a little bit of everything.

This is going to be a good all-around hitch. It's going to give us some decent weight capacities. It's going to have a 900 pound maximum gross tongue weight rating, so that's going to be the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. That's more than enough to use just about any accessory that you'd ever want to. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, it's going to be 6,000 pounds, so that's going to be the amount of weight pulling on the hitch.

That's the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have on it.Now, this can be used with any weight distribution system which is a separate component, but if you are using that, the weight capacities do increase. The maximum gross trailer weight rating is going to go up to 8,000 pounds, but the maximum gross tongue weight rating is going to remain the same at 900. And I do always like to mention it's never a bad idea to check with your Ranger's owner's manual to make sure your truck can pull that much weight. Now, since the hitch is a class three, it's going to give us that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening and a reinforced collar here for extra strength. It's going to have the standard five-eighths pin hole, and keep in mind a pin and clip does not come included, but if you need one, you can find it here at etrailer. It's going to have some loop style safety chain openings which are wide open and pretty large, so you should have no problem using all of the common hooks that you might have. Now, since most Rangers come equipped right from the factory with four-pole trailer wiring, it's really nice if you're towing a trailer with four-pole wire.

But if your trailer has seven-pole wiring, I would recommend getting the Curt T-connector, which will give you a seven-way, that's really easy to hook up since it more or less just plugs right in to that factory wiring. Now, I'm going to give you a couple of measurements and you're going to use these to help figure out which hitch mount accessories to get. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, it's going to be about 19 inches, and you're going to use that to help figure out whether you need to get a ball mount with either a drop or a rise. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, it's going to be about four inches, and you're going to use that to figure out if any folding accessories you might have, can be stored in the upright position without making contact with the vehicle. But overall, a good looking hitch, that's going to allow us to do all those activities that we couldn't do before. Now, as far as the installation goes, it is really easy and shouldn't take you a whole lot of time at all. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and put the hitch on together now.

To begin our installation, we're going to be working here at the back of our Ranger on each side of the frame rail. Now, what we're going to have to do is remove these two factory bolts, but since these are actually supporting or holding up our bumper beam, we're going to have to figure out a way to keep that bumper beam in place. So what I found, these two tabs here, one's on the bumper beam, one's on the frame rail, what we can actually do is take a clamp and tighten it down, to clamp them two together and this is going to hold that bumper beam in place. Now anything we do to one side, we're going to repeat on the other side of our frame rail. With the bumper beam all supported, we can grab a 21-millimeter socket and remove these two factory bolts. Now, we can grab our hitch, lift it up into position. We're just going to use our factory hardware to re-secure it. We want to get one started, at least hand-tight on each side, that way the hitch will support itself. Now that we have all of our hardware in place and being tight, we can come back and snug it all down. Then we can come back with a torque wrench and get everything tightened down to the amount specified in our instructions. Once it's all torqued, then we can take our clamps off. That'll finish up our look at, and our installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, on our 2020 Ford Ranger.

The hitch actually arrived a day early and in good shape. It is very heavy duty and has a very good finish. The install was a breeze because on the 2019 Ford Ranger they welded a bracket on each side of the bumber frame so you can clamp up the bumper with a couple of clamps so when you take out the 4 21 millimeter bolts the bumper stays in place. It is a good idea to place a jack support also under the bumper if you dont feel safe. If you are healty and in good shape you can lift it up and start the bolts by yourself. I got my wife to hold up one end of the hitch to the frame while I raised the other end and it was a breeze. Many thanks to E-Trailor. 733295

now that was a plug and play install. i highly recommend a 1/2" impact to remove the bumper bolts, they are on there.. it was nice of ford to put 2 tabs on each side to clamp together so bumper stays in place with bolts removed.. the quality of the hitch is great. info paper was nice to have with the additional towing info on it... nice job etrailer and i WOULD highly recommend them also.. quick delivery too. 720592

New hitch was delivered quickly. Easy to install. 2019 Ranger has a tab on the bumper and frame that I was able to temporarily use a bolt and nut through to hold the bumper in place while the bumper bolts were removed to position the hitch. I used a floor jack to position the hitch and then bolted it into place. Took about 30 minutes to complete installation. 708157

Nicholas at etrailer.com did an outstanding job of keeping me informed about my order (from order to shipping to tracking shipment ) and etrailer was one of first companies to receive this particular hitch that fit a 2019 Ford Ranger they also had a super price with free shipping. The instructions from Curt Mft. for installation said you needed a 24mm socket and my trk. required a 21mm socket, also found after clamping bumper to frame, as instructed, you still need a support under front of bumper to keep it from sagging. The hitch fit the frame perfect using the existing bolts and took two men with mech. knowledge 25 mins. to install. Overall I was extremely pleased with etrailer and Curt hitch. 629218

Couldn’t be happier. Delivered quickly, excellent quality, and installation was so easy. From box to completely installed in 10 mins. Beats waiting for the backordered ford version that costs 3x as much, and makes a pickup truck actually useful. 638769

  • Comparing Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitches for 2019 Ford Ranger
The Draw-Tite and Curt trailer hitches that fit your 2019 Ford Ranger are very similar, with the biggest difference being their respective capacities. The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76275 has a towing capacity of 7,500 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 1,125 lbs. • Do Different Towing Capacities of Curt & Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Matter for 2020 Ford Ranger
In a word, yes, the towing capacities of the two trailer hitches do matter, and I'll explain why. I checked out the owner's manual and it states that your 2020 Ford Ranger has a maximum 7,500 lb towing capacity (so long as the trailer has brakes). This means that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13417 does not have the same capacity as the truck unless used with a weight distribution system. The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76275 has a 7,500 lb towing capacity which means you...

  • What Size Socket is Needed to Install Hitch in 2019 Ford Ranger
Go with the size socket that fits the bolts best regardless of what the instructions say. That said, at one point the instructions for this hitch had the wrong size listed, but the correct size is now listed of 21 mm.

  • Does the Spare Tire Need To Be Lowered To Install the Curt Hitch On a 2019 Ford Ranger
The spare tire will need to be lowered to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13417 on a 2019 Ford Ranger. I understand the instructions do not state this is needed but we have found that this step is required to install a trailer hitch on a Ford Ranger. That said, the spare tire will install right back up into place once the hitch is in position so there should be no worries here. In order to lower the spare tire there should be a tool somewhere in the vehicle which you can...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2020 Ford Ranger
The trailer hitch that I recommend for a 2020 Ford Ranger is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13417 which is a custom bolt-on fit that does not require any cutting or drilling. The process should actually only take you around 20 to 40 minutes. I have attached an install photo for you as well. For a trailer wiring harness, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 22124 is your best option as it does not require any splicing therefore is almost entirely plug and play. I also recommend...

I'm assuming you're wondering which ball mount you're needing. If you don't have those measurements you would need to "mark and drill holes for two 3/4" bolts and two 1/2" bolts" according to the linked installation instructions.
