Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Speaker 1: Today on this 2018 Subaru Crosstrek we'll be having a look at and showing how to install the CURT Class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number C13382. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. One thing that you'll notice about this hitch is that the main frame of the hitch is mostly hidden behind our rear fascia. The only part you really see hanging down is our actual receiver itself. On the side of our receiver you'll find our industry-standard 5/8" diameter hitch pin hole to secure any of our hitch-mounted accessories. You can pick up a pin and clip on our website as part number PC3. Welded onto the bottom of our receiver you'll find our safety chain loops.

They're a rolled steel design. They have a fairly decent size opening for you to attach your safety chains from your trailer onto. On the back of our receiver you'll find this collar that's welded on to help improve the strength of the receiver opening and to give us a nice finished look. This hitch features a 525 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 3,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can hold. You want to make sure that you consult with the owner's manual of your Crosstrek and not exceed what the vehicle is rated for. Go by whichever number is lower. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

You're looking at about 15" from the ground to the top of the 2" receiver opening and about 2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install we need to have a look at our vehicle's frame rail. On both sides we will find some rubber plugs that we need to remove. We find three rubber plugs on our frame rails. We're looking at the driver side.

We only need to remove the front one and the back one. It's the same on the passenger side. We'll use a flat head screwdriver and pry out the plugs. Now our front access hole here, we need to enlarge it slightly for our hardware to pass through. You can use a file or a grinder. I'm going to use a rotary tool in order to enlarge it.

With our hole enlarged, our spacer block will now slide through, as well as our bolts. We'll do the same for both sides on the forward hole. Now we'll take our pull wire, insert it into the back hole. It will come out the front hole. We'll take our black, place it on the wire, insert inside our frame rail, thread our carriage bolt onto the wire, push it inside the frame rail, pull it through our hole. Now we'll take a second pull wire, place our block on, thread on our carriage bolt, insert our bolt inside the frame rail, followed by our block. Then we'll pull our bolt through. We'll make sure we leave our pull wires attached. Now we have our hardware in place, we'll take some spray paint and cover up where we notched out to help prevent any rust. Now keep in mind, anything we do on one side we'll repeat on the other side. We're looking at the top of our hitch right now. This is the front; this is the back. We need to have a block on the top on the front hole that will go between the body of the vehicle and the hitch. This will ensure that it's level. Now in order to make it easier for us to get the hitch in position with the block there, we are going to tape these blocks to our hitch. We'll have one on each side of the hitch. Now with an extra set of hands we'll raise our hitch into position, feeding our pull wires through the holes in the top of the hitch. Make sure we place them in the right holes. We'll raise it up over our exhaust. With it in place, we'll remove our pull wire and we'll thread on one of our hex flange nuts. Now we use a 3/4" socket and tighten down our hardware. Now we'll torque our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. That completes our look at and installation of the CURT Class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number C13382, on this 2018 Subaru Crosstrek.

Very good product. Hitch fits nice and tucks up under the bumper for a clean look. The install was simple and right to the point. The video from the web page was a good tool to view especially when opening the fwd holes up for the install. I used a hand file and it worked great. I did remove the muffler just for the extra elbow room and because there was limited space on the driver's side to get to the mounting area. Total install took about 1.5 hr 573056

Well made and hides nicely out of sight. A bit tricky to install as the frame holes needed drilled wider and getting the screws in place with the lanyard proved difficult. However, the money saved doing it myself was definitely worth the effort. 570534

The hitch was well packaged and arrived without a scratch. Make sure that you orient the rectangular shims as shown on the video with the long side running side to side. This is important and it is not highlighted anywhere. I started out with the long side running fore to aft as shown in the printed instructions. This resulted in one end of the shim resting on a unibody weld seam and I could not get full thread engagement with the nut. After rotating the shims the nuts went on without a problem. I used jack stands to help support one side of the hitch during installation since I was working without a helper. 567799

After looking at the Curt and Drawtite hitches, I decided to go with the Curt hitch because it appeared to be more concealed under the car and I did not need the increased tow capacity of the Drawtite hitch. I placed my order on a Tuesday afternoon and my hitch was delivered on Friday, which was awesome. Installation was straightforward and easy as described on Etrailers website, I took my time and even spray painted around the holes that needed to be enlarged to get the bolts in the frame. Total install was 1hr 15 min. Very happy with fit and look. 563424

Received the trailer hitch and it was as described. The installation instructions were plain. As I am 77 years old and four years past getting a pacemaker followed by a four by-pass open chest surgery, I elected to go by your instructions to let a experienced shop install it. Five years ago I ordered one like this and was able to install it per installations on my then vehicle with no trouble. It looked and worked as described. I am well pleased with the products. 523372

I'm beyond excited about this product. I had originally ordered the Draw-tite 2" hitch and the day before installing, decided to order the Curt hitch instead. Primarily I didn't want to look at the visible cross bar on the Draw-tite, but another big reason was the difference in mounting hardware. The hardware included with the Curt is SO much more confidence inspiring that that included with the Draw-tite. The metal plates that slide up into the frame of the car were clearly designed with different ideas in mind. Draw-tite included plates that only prevented the bolts from spinning, while Curt included plates that are double the thickness, and clearly designed to provide a great deal of pressure distribution inside the frame of the car. Additionally the bolts are 7/16" dia on the Draw-tite. while they are 1/2" on the Curt, which is why you need to file a notch into one of the entry holes. These extra touches may be completely overkill, but I sure appreciate the attention to detail. 543773

2018 Honda Odyssey

Purchased this Curt Class III hitch along with a Thule Vertex 4 bike rack for my 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. The installation was only about 45 minutes, thanks to the excellent installation videos that etrailer.com provides on their website. Disclaimer: I have installed two other hitches myself (Honda Fit and Honda Odyssey, both also purchased from etrailer.com in the last 5 years), so it was not my first rodeo, and I was familiar with running the wires through the frame to run the bolts and washers, widening some of the frame holes with a Dremmel (just slightly), and being careful not to push the bolts back into the frame when threading the nuts. Installing the hitch on a 2018 Crosstrek by yourself is a bit awkward, since you have to be on your back holding the hitch up with one hand while threading the wires through the frame and then threading nuts with the other hand (having a second person makes it a lot easier). But, the high ground clearance gives you plenty of room without jacking up the car, and I did not have to loosen the exhaust or anything like that. The only snag in my install was that I broke a socket when torquing the four nuts, and had to run to the hardware store to get a replacement 3/4 socket. One thing to be aware of: the instructions list a pretty hefty target torque on the four mounting nuts; If you go with the recommended torque rating mentioned in the printed instructions, you may have to search around for a torque wrench that can measure torque that high (you don't want to guess on the torque). 518964

Installed by myself with minor 'helping hand'. Subaru CrossTrek ground clearance (8.7-in) sufficient to comfortable install 'on the ground', on my back. Bolt wires wonderful compared to an install I did on a Chrysler Pacific in 2005! My primary use will be for a recumbent bike rack. Also for car carrier, perhaps light trailers on occassion. 483653

Compared to the trailer wiring harnesses I've installed on a few other cars, the installation of the harness on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek was a relative breeze and the instructions on the ETrailer website are explicit and easy to follow. I didn't time myself, but estimate it took under 15 minutes, including testing with a test light. A truly plug and play harness. 483930

2018 Subaru XV Crosstrek

I bought this Curt trailer hitch receiver for my 2018 Subaru Crosstrek because of its clean appearance and easy installation. It took me a little less than 2 hrs. to get it and the T-One wiring harness installed, working at a very deliberate pace and checking the excellent etrailer videos frequently. I didn't have to jack up the car, and didn't need an extra set of hands. Could not be happier with the hitch and the fast, free shipping I received from etrailer. Highly recommended! 558450

I couldn't be happier with this receiver which fit perfectly on my 2018 Crosstrek. The mounting kit comes with everything you need. It came very well packaged w/o any scuffs or damage. While I was able to install it alone in about an hour, it should be very quick and easy with two people. I was also able to install it without having to lift the vehicle. Enlarging the holes was easier than I expected, as I wasn't sure the exact thickness or durability of the frame from the video. I ended up using a round 10x3/8 inch file to carve a channel similar to the one in video. There was sufficient room to file the opening and there was enough travel to let the file cut quickly. After that, it's really pretty easy to align into place. Do note, the exhaust piping does block the alignment holes more so on the driver's side than the passenger side. While tight, there is still enough space to do your work. You may want to loosely fasten the nuts on this driver's side first, as the passenger side has more room to move and swing the receiver into place. Wait to tighten all the nuts after you've got them all started to allow for any adjustments. I was also able to leave the guide wires attached to the bolts until I was ready to put on the nuts to avoid them getting pushed back up into the frame while aligning it. I'm really happy with the profile aspect of this receiver. It's a very clean look. I highly recommend it. The installation video by etrailer.com was very well done and really influenced my decision to order from them. They were very helpful on the phone to. Great customer service all around. 476295

Excellent product and service. The product arrived ahead of time and included everything needed for the installation (no additional hardware needed) Because of the position of the hitch once installed, it provides firm support to the rear bumper which is a pretty soft plastic with thin plastic brackets. It doesn't affects the look of the car since the only part visible is the receiver. The only issue I have is that all the bolts provided are the same length, and while the length is plenty appropriate for the rear attachment points, the use of the provided spacers for the front barely provide enough tread to have the nuts all the way in. 505182

Comments

Firstly, the spacers you mentioned only need to be used if the hitch mounting flange doesnt sit flat against the underside of the frame member. If they are not needed, they shouldnt be used. Secondly, when properly torqued, the bolts should show 1 thread protruding from the nut at the very least. If the bolt is flush with, or is recessed in the nut, it hasnt grabbed enough threads. If it hasnt grabbed enough threads, its possible that the square portion of the carriage bolt isnt seated properly in the square washer up in the frame member. If thats the case, you can unscrew the nut, push the bolt up slightly and turn the bolt by hand so itll seat correctly.

Honda Insight

Hitch was packed well and shipped promptly by eTrailer. Went on fine and I’m comfortable using it. Reason for four stars is that while both back bolts tightened to the specified lb-ft of torque properly, both front bolts made a clicking sound instead of tightening all the way to spec. I am unsure if this was caused by the spacer inside the frame rotating with the carriage bolt head or if the spacer was stripped. Thankfully these bolts are less vital than the rear bolts, but i will keep an eye on them every six or so months just in case, and I hope I didn’t scrape up the inside of my frame much. Hitch looks great and feels great, so I’m not too worried, but if someone has had a similar issue, I would not mind a bit more insight... 489836

I am an auto mechanic and it took me 45 minutes to install hitch and wiring. I had to grind an 1/8th inch of the frame away to get flat washers up inside the frame.I used rust proof sealant to cover the grind area to prevent rust. The instructions were clear and it went as instructed. You will need a die grinder or you could file the metal away. It looks good...... You do not need any tools to install the wire harness. Just access the spare tire area and there is a plug under the rear sill plate you can just plug the harness into. 448565

Pretty straight forward install, took about an hour. Definitely a 2 person job to get it up into position and get the nuts started. Check your torque wrench range. Seems to be a quality product. I like how the main part of the hitch is tucked up high and hidden. 457730

2018 Subaru XV Crosstrek

I installed the Curt hitch on my 2018 Crosstrek yesterday. I encountered one problem that I will describe below. The shipment from etrailer arrived in fine shape, in a heavy duty cardboard box with no damage. I was able to install hitch without raising the rear end of the car and without removing the muffler, although in hindsight it might have been easier had I removed the muffler. I used a dremel tool with a grinding bit to cut the two notches in the front frame holes, which took less than ten minutes. The problem was with the square spacer blocks that go between the hitch and the frame at the front of the hitch. With the square spacer blocks in place , the two corresponding bolts were too short. I double checked that the bolts were properly seated in the rectangular blocks. Note that that the square spacer blocks overlap a weld seam on the frame, which results in a gap such that the square spacer block does not seat flush with the frame. My guess is that this extra gap was not anticipated when the bolt was chosen. My solution was to remove the square space blocks. I'll also mention that with the muffler in place it's difficult to properly torque the bolts. Using a six-point socket is helpful here. Overall I am satisfied with the installation & the instructions, however I gave this product a four star rating because of the issue with the length of the bolts. 522843

Comments

I have confirmed with my contacts at Curt and the spacer blocks that are installed outside of the frame rail are intended to level the hitch and are included as an as needed basis.

I had this professionally installed by a local shop and they told me the fitment is great and it's easy to install (with the right tools and a helping hand). I like how most of it is kind of hidden behind the bumper. 439785

I bought and installed the hitch(bar is out of sight receiver is seen when not in use) and the vehicle specific Wiring Harness (plug n play). I watched a install video of this being installed on my new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. After seeing how easy it was to install I ordered the things needed and in less then 48 hours they were delivered to my front door. I did the install by myself and followed the install video instructions. I took extra steps to run the wiring by removing the muffler heat shield so I could route the wiring out the spare tire drain hole. Resealed the drain plug and mounting hardware with Rubber undercoating spary. This. Whole Kit and the video’s are top of the line. The fish wires for the mounting hardware is a very nice add and makes it very easy to install this hitch. I managed OK by myself but it would definitely be nice to have a helper when it comes to raising the hitch into place for bolting it to the frame. I am very impressed with the thought and attention to detail this company did with this Hitch, wiring harness and install videos. I would not hesitate to do this same purchase again and highly recommend it. There were several hitch options and price points to for me to choose from for my 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. 489393

- C13382

by:

Everything about the ordering process was exceptionally well handled, incl. the 110% price program........the only suggestion I would have is that eTrailers might consider mentioning that, due to the size and weight of the hitch(s), customers might be alerted that the hitches may be received with scratches or whatever due to the fact that the hitches are delivered to eTrailers on pallets NOT cartons.....therefore, some surface blemishes are normal and not a problem. Otherwise, I am TOTALLY happy with my purchase from eTrailer and expect to be back for accessories once the weather warms up and I can do my install! 469598

I really like the way this hitch tucks up behind the bumper except the actual receiver box. It gives a clean look for our vehicle. The design allows you to install it without dropping the exhaust or anything. The only negative point is that the hardware does not fit in the access hole, so some grinding and touch up paint was required. 466699

Comments

Denise, The Curt Hitch C13382 for the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek does require filing or enlarging the access holes in your frame. We do not recommend grinding the hardware of the hitch or the hitch itself because it can affect the structural integrity of the part.

Perfect fit on ‘18 Crosstrek. Very well made and designed hitch. I like that it has only the receiver box visible, and crossbars hidden. Easy installation, just make sure to follow directions carefully for the “fishwires”. Very happy with my purchase! 495754

Outstanding hitch, exactly what I’d expect from Curt. Very easy install on my ‘18 Crosstrek. Even faster than on my ‘17 Outback. You don’t need to drop the exhaust but if you’re using a reamer bit it would make it easier. Again, not a big deal and not necessary, still less than an hour job. Everything disappears but the receiver, looks better than the expensive factory unit. Mostly purchased for my mountain bike rack. etrailer shipping super fast. Packaging average and you get the usual scuffs where the shippers manhandle the box but nothing major or ultimately visible or compromising. 497967

The C13382 appears to be a well constructed hitch. It took more time than the 60 minutes for a DIY, but that's probably because I didn't have all of the tools at the ready and I wasn't rushing. I substituted a Dremel for the die grinder and that worked fine. Lifting the hitch into place was the hardest part. I lifted it into place slowly by placing blocks under the center(hitch area) while using a scissor jack to alternately raise each side adding blocks and jack stands and until I could start the first threads. If you use the supplied spacers the 2 forward carriage bolts may be just a wee bit short. If I had to do it again, I'd leave out the leveling spacers or purchase 2" carriage bolts. 440427

It arrived in a box. There were two holes in the box, where the bolted to car parts were scuffed as they must have been dragged around during delivery. I filed them just to remove burrs. The center receiver (visible after installed) was well packaged and avoided any damage. I grinded the hole into the car frame to allow fishing bolts and spacers into the car with the pictured tool. It was less material removal than I feared. But be careful you make the hole large enough for both spacer and the bolt, because I had trouble fishing the bolt in one hole that was just shy of the right size. A light hammering helped it in. But I made sure the hole was big enough before putting away the air tool. I did not need to lower the muffler, but it was much easier to wiggle the thing into place with the fished wires with my wife assisting. It only took 10 minutes of her time. From raising the car onto jackstands, installing the hitch receiver, to lowering it, I was done in 2 hours. 476939

Beautiful product at a great price! Nice welds and powder coating, well built. All the hardware needed. I removed the rear bumper cladding to install. Looks complicated but not. Got the hardware in place and tightened down. No cutting needed or enlarging of holes. The inside plate washers toward the front of the car need to be longer. They spin and will not get a grip to tighten the bolt. The leveling washer should be round to conform to the factory depressed impression. a round galvanized construction J-bolt washer did the trick and was thinner than the square supplied, so you could stack a couple to get a better increments of level. I ordered the 989900 ball mounts. They are beefy!!! Other than the stitching on the bag handle breaking, the receivers are well built like the hitch receiver. 443327

  • Is There Drilling Required to install Curt Hitch # C13382 on 2018 Subaru Crosstrek
  • The install of the Curt hitch part # C13382 on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek does not require drilling but it does required you to enlarge the access hole that you sent us a picture of. I attached a picture of the step in the install instructions that covers this. A dremol tool would be the most ideal tool to accomplish this but a file could work as well.

  • 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Hitch Comparison Curt vs. EcoHitch
  • The Ecohitch part # 306-X7365 and the Curt hitch part # C13382 are both USA made 2 inch hitches confirmed as a fit for your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. The biggest difference is the removable lower section that the Ecohitch has which means that when you don't need the hitch you won't see it at all. The Curt does not have this so the hitch is visible at all times. Because of that the price difference is pretty large since that feature is more expensive and highly desired. The other thing to...

  • What Curt Trailer Hitches Fit a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek
  • Both the Curt trailer hitches # C12184 and # C13382 are confirmed to fit your 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. I recommend going with the latter part # C13382 as it is a Class III trailer hitch with a 2" receiver. This will allow you to use a wider variety of accessories. I have attached an installation video of this hitch on a 2018 Crosstrek for you to reference. If you let me know what you plan on using the trailer hitch for I can make additional recommendations if necessary.

  • Is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Hidden Like the Curt Hitch
  • I have included a picture showing what Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 76209 looks like when installed on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. (It may take a little while for the picture to appear.) The crosstube on this hitch will be visible below the rear fascia on the back of the vehicle. Like you said the Curt hitch # C13382 is mostly hidden with the exception of the receiver. The difference is tongue weight capacity between the 2 hitches is not a factor because the vehicle itself has a maximum tongue...

  • Will the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13382 Fit a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek
  • The only trailer hitches that are currently listed as a fit for your 2019 Subaru Crosstrek (as of September 2018) are both from EcoHitch. These are parts # 306-X7365 (2" receiver) and # 306-X7366 (1-1/4" receiver). None of our other manufacturers have a fit listed as of yet. I recommend going with the part # 306-X7365 that has the 2" receiver as it will allow you to use a wider variety of accessories. If you let me know what you will be using the trailer hitch for I can make additional...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek
  • I certainly understand your concerns with modifying a brand new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek as I am sure anyone who dishes out the money for a new vehicle would. However, there is no need to pay dealer prices for accessories that can be purchased through aftermarket manufacturers for a fraction of the cost. The aftermarket hitch manufacturers we carry (Curt/Draw-Tite/TorkLift) are no slouches. They are considered to be the premier supplier of aftermarket trailer hitches. They spend countless...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Bike Rack for 2018 Subaru Crosstrek
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13382 is a custom fit option for your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek that has a measurement of 2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper. It will work great with the Thule T2 Classic # TH9044 or the T2 Pro # TH9034XT in black or # TH9034XTS in silver. You will not need the Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap # 18050 for your vehicle and I personally wouldn't want to use it when it isn't required for the warranty. It does...

  • The rear fascia/bumper on your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek does NOT have to be trimmed, cut, or modified to install Curt trailer hitch # C13382. I have included a link below to the installation instructions for you to view. I checked with Curt and they list trailer wiring harness # C56040 as the correct wiring harness for your 2018 Crosstrek. I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2019 Subaru Crosstrek
  • For a Curt trailer hitch that is a confirmed fit for your 2019 Subaru Crosstrek we have the part # C13382 which I would recommend highly. It has a 2 inch opening which means more accessories are made for it and it has higher weight capacities as well as having a concealed crosstube that will be much less visible than most hitches. I attached a picture of what it will look like when installed. For a trailer wiring kit the best option is the Tekonsha part # 118467 which is a custom fit...

  • Concealed and Visible Trailer Hitch Options for 2018 Subaru Crosstrek
  • For your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek we offer several hitch options, all shown on the linked page, that include both 1-1/4-inch Class II and 2-inch Class III types. We generally always recommend the 2-inch option when it is available since these hitches typically offer a higher weight capacity for towing and much broader compatibility with the range of available accessory items like bike racks and cargo baskets. Also among the hitch options are products that have a completely hidden crosstube,...

That rack will allow bikes up to 60 lbs each and with tires up to 5 inches wide. The closest part of the rack when folded is 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin and the carrier weighs 52 lbs. • Curt and us have not test fit the Curt hitch part # C13382 on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek that has a Nameless exhaust kit installed. If anyone was to have tested this it would have been the exhaust brand as Curt basically only tests things with factory equipment. The best help I can be is to have you check out the picture I attached that shows how the hitch fits with the factory exhaust for you to compare to what you have.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Limited
  • We only have one trailer hitch receiver confirmed to fit your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. It is a 2 inch receiver however, which I believe is the better option due to your accessory options as well as the strength of the hitch. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13382. You can use a hitch reducer like the Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HT02 to give you the 1-1/4 inch opening if you wish.

  • Which Ball Mount Should go With Curt Hitch C13382 on 2018 Subaru Crosstrek?
  • We haven't yet been able to do a test fit on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek with Curt hitch # C13382, so the exact measurement from the top of the hitch to the ground is not yet known. Based on the 13 inches from ground to coupler on your trailer and recent heights from the Crosstrek and it's Impreza brethren, you can use the MaxxTow Adjustable-Height Ball Mount # MT70068. This mount does come with a pin and clip though you'd need 2" hitch ball # 40038 to go with it. I've added a link to a...
