Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Chevrolet Equinox

Speaker 1: Today on our 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt class 3 custom trailer hitch receiver, part number C123307. The cross tube is gonna hang down below the bumper and it is gonna visible. But the main part we're gonna see is that receiver tube sticking out. Our hitch is gonna offer us 2" by 2" receiver tube opening. We're just gonna have a lot of different varieties of accessories that we can mount up. Now the way we're gonna mount any of our accessories to the hitch pin hole here on the side and it is gonna accept a standard 5/8 pin and clip and while these aren't included in the kit, you can pick them up here at etrailer.com.

Now as far as the safety chain connection points go, it's gonna be a plate style welded to the bottom and as you can see, we'll have plenty of room to get most sides on or off and since it's kind of set back a little bit from the pin hole itself, we're gonna have more room and not have to worry about interference. As far as weight capacity goes, our hitch is gonna have a 525 pound tongue weight, which is the maximum downward force of the receiver tube, along with a 3500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's gonna be the amount it can pull, including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it. Now with those numbers in mind, you should always double check your Equinox's owner's manual and never exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight. Now Curt does recommend using a safety strap when carrying any non-trailer loads, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. I'd like to give you a few measurements and that's gonna help you in deciding for accessories for your hitch, such as the ball mount, a bike rack, or even a cargo carrier.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, you're right at about 5 1/2". Now that's gonna come in handy when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have enough clearance and it's not gonna come in contact with your rear bumper. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's gonna be right at about 11 1/2". Now that measurement's not only gonna come in handy when looking at ball mounts to make sure you find the appropriate rise or drop for your trailer, but also at that height, I would recommend a bike rack or a cargo carrier with a raised shank. That way, we get a little bit more ground clearing and although our hitch does sit below the bumper, it is gonna offer us an easier install because we're not gonna have to contend with anything behind the bumper or anything underneath, like the exhaust. Now of the passenger side only, we're gonna have this wire that's attached to the bottom of the frame.

We're gonna wanna remove that pushpin so it'll be out of the way when we go to put our hitch in. Take a flat head screwdriver or a trim panel tool and we'll just pry it out of the frame and push it aside for right now. Now if we come to the bottom of the frame, we're gonna have several holes. We'll have one large hole in the center and then two smaller ones on the outer side of it. Now the large hole is gonna be our access hole and each one of these is gonna be one of our mounting locations. But as you can see, our hardware's just a little too big to fit through the holes to get it into the frame.

We're gonna need to cut that hole just a little bit bigger or file it down so we can get the hardware in place. I'm gonna be using a rotary tool. However, you can use a hand file. You just want to periodically check and take your hardware and see if you can fit it in because we want to file it as little as possible. Now that our hardware can fit through, we're gonna wanna make sure we do it to both sides. Now it's never a good idea to leave exposed metal on your vehicle. So I'm gonna take a little bit of spray paint. I'm gonna spray everywhere that I filed down. In order to get our hardware in place, we're gonna take one of our pole wires.I'm gonna put a bend in it. I'm gonna feed it through the very rear hole toward the back of the bumper. I'm gonna feed it into the frame until I can have it come out that large access hole. Now it's very important that you leave both ends coming out of the frame. You don't want to pull that wire all the way through. Then we're gonna take a square hole spacer block, go over the end of the cable and then we'll take the carriage bolt and we're gonna thread it onto the end. Then we're gonna feed each piece into the frame one at a time and we'll pull on the end of our wire until it drops down from the bottom of the frame. Now we're gonna do that for each of the outer locations and the middle one's gonna be a little bit different though. For the middle hole, we're gonna take one of our square spacer blocks. We'll slide it over the coiled end and we'll thread on our carriage bolt before we put it into the frame and we'll put our bolt in first, push it into the frame, followed by the block. Then we're gonna pull it all back down through. Now that this side is done, we're gonna repeat that entire process over on the other side. Now with an extra set of hands, we're gonna lift our hitch up and make sure you feed your pole wires down through the top of the hitch, going down. We're gonna lift our hitch up, making sure all the bolts come through. We'll pull one of our pole wires off. Then we're gonna take a hex nut and secure the hitch down. Now you want to make sure you get at least one nut on each side. That way, the hitch will support itself and we don't have to worry about it falling down. We'll come back with a 3/4" socket and we're gonna tighten up all the hardware. Then we'll come back and we're gonna torque our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. That'll finish up your look at the Curt class 3 custom trailer hitch receiver, part number C123307 on our 2019 Chevrolet Equinox.

Excellent Hitch and heavy construction. The only problem was that the last hole on both side did not line up at all. What a pain in the butt. The holes weren't even close. Info said it would fit the new 2018 Terrain and match frame holes on the vehicle. Sorry to say this was not the case. 502194

David, thank you for your review. This hitch part # C13307
Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2"

is a fit for the 2018 GMC Terrain, excluding diesel models. If your GMC is not a diesel you may have a flexed hitch. Sometimes trailer hitches get flexed during shipping or transport. I have attached a link to help you fix this.

Hitch fits well after straightening the side bracket. It was bent in 1 inch at the top. The hitch must have slid around in shipping carton which was too long to keep it from moving. 45 inch long for a 38 inch part. I did not realize that the bracket was bent until I tried to line up the left as I had stated 3 bolts on the right. All is well now as it is now installed. By applying several smart blows with a heavy wood splitting wedge straighten the bracket. Installed it without even jacking up the van. By the way I am 79 years old. 421191

Excellent hitch. It arrived within the promised time frame, well packaged, no damage and all the parts for installation were in the box. I followed the instructions per etrailer's online video and installation was relatively easy. The fit is perfect and the hitch looks good as well. 719871

My hitch was unbelievably easy to put on my vehicle, it took longer to widen the holes than itit did to mount the hitch, will definitely recommend etrailer.com to my friends and family members. 704804

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. Product arrived about an inch to short for installation. After reading a series of reviews on here, the recommendation was that it needs to be bent to size. Expecting the new product to fit was probably a bit too hopeful on our part, but not realizing it wouldn’t added significant time to the installation process. Technically, yes it is installed, but I am not happy with the product overall. As etrailer has blamed shipping for this on other such reviews, I would like to note that the box arrived in perfect condition, this is clearly a manufacturer or warehouse handling issue, not a shipping issue. 697084

Great super easy to install hitch. The video is great for installation help. However you’ll definitely need a second set of hands to help, and ramps to get enough clearance under the Equinox to install. I don’t tow with it, I have it for a bike rack and it is everything I could need! 679870

When a trailer hitch is constructed, softer steel is used in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. This flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

I was amazed at how easy this hitch was to install, from start to finish it took me about 30 minutes. I worried that the hitch might look too big on the back of my Equinox, but the finished product looks amazing and was very affordable. 555299

I recently ordered a trailer hitch for my 2019 Equinox along with a wiring harness for the trailer lights. I installed both yesterday and all fit well and was easy to install. The products are well built and also look good. One improvement is in the packing of the products. I understand UPS or FedEx can be very abusive while handling packages. When I received my hitch and harness the box had a 6" diameter hole in it. When I opened it, the box for the harness was attached to the hitch but was open on both ends and its content spilled in the larger box. Luckily all of the harness components were accounted for and undamaged. I would recommend the packers tape the box closed to prevent this form happening. As for UPS and FedEx rough handling, package it "IDIOT PROOF" 546560

2018 Chevrolet Equinox

Hi to the lady that I called to find out how to put a trailer hitch on my new 2018 Equinox. The reading literature did not help me much at all. When I called an the lady sent me the movie on how to install the hitch an the SUV in the movie was a 2018 Equinox, I was overwhelmed, especially the 6 wire bolt holders that came with the package. Those bolt holders were worth the hitch alone. I would never had gotten it together. For me at 71 years old it was almost easy to do myself. Thank You, Joe 447932

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Is there a Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Chevy Equinox that Fits in the Same Place as the Factory Hitch
  • No, in this case the aftermarket hitches for the 2018 Chevy Equinox do not mirror the location of the factory hitch. Like you said the receiver on all the available options is below the rear fascia. The benefit though of an aftermarket hitch is that the hitch itself will be less than half the MSRP on the factory hitch and that does not include labor to have it installed if you choose to have the dealer install it. And the draw-back of the aftermarket hitches is limited ground clearance. If...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2018 Chevy Equinox
  • There are indeed two Class III trailer hitches available that are confirmed to fit your 2018 Chevy Equinox (as long as you don't have the Diesel model). Both the Curt # C13307 and the Draw-Tite # 76419 will have very similar installation processes, as you noted, and will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening. Between the two models, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III # 76419 for a couple of reasons. First, the Draw-Tite hitch actually features a higher towing weight...

  • The exhaust does not have to be lowered to install the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E98904 on your 2019 Chevrolet Equinox. The installation process is very simple even for the most inexperienced of installers and it should only take you around 40 minutes or so with the proper tools (sockets, ratchet etc.). I have attached a video for you on the install process which will be the same as the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13307.

I recommend the Curt hitch because only the receiver tube portion is shown which makes for a much cleaner look once installed. • The best trailer hitch receiver we have for your 2018 GMC Terrain is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13307. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver tube opening. I like this trailer hitch because it is made in the U.S.A. and has a 2" receiver tube opening which will allow for a greater variety of hitch mounted accessories to be used. I have attached an installation video of this hitch installed on a very similar 2018 Chevy Equinox for you to look at. Then for a cargo carrier,...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2019 GMC Terrain
  • Yes, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13307 is a confirmed fit for your 2019 GMC Terrain so long as it does not have the diesel engine. This is actually the trailer hitch I recommend you use because it offers the most ground clearance which means you don't have to worry about any of your hitch mounted accessories scraping the pavement. It is also the only made in USA hitch available for your vehicle. If you take a look at the attached install video as well as the attached photo...

As you can see in the attached video, the hitch will attach easily but does require the stabilization strap # 18050. Also this installation requires filing or using a rotary tool to make the hardware fit. I don't like the stabilization strap requirement, so I still recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76419. The installation is a little different...

  • Does Exhaust Need to be Lowered to Install Any Trailer Hitch on a 2019 Chevy Equinox
  • To install the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76419 on any 2019 Chevy Equinox (regardless if it's FWD or not) the exhaust must be temporarily lowered. This is actually something that is pretty common when installing a trailer hitch on any vehicle and it sounds more intimidating than it really is. You just need a ratchet straps or some bungee cords to hold the exhaust at that lower point so you can hold the trailer hitch up into place. For a trailer hitch that doesn't require you to lower...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch To Use With Bike Rack On a 2020 GMC Terrain
  • The trailer hitch that I recommend for a 2020 GMC Terrain is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13307 because the hitch pin hole does not sit as far under the bumper as the other option for your Terrain, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76419. The increased hitch pin hole depth can be an issue with certain bike racks in that they would not have clearance to fold up for storage. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver measures 4" from the center of the hitch pin hole...

  • Given that you have a brand-new vehicle, I'm going to suggest you go with a hitch that's mostly concealed except for the receiver tube. I'd go with the Draw-Tite Class III hitch, part # 76419. This hitch is compatible with all models but the Diesel, so if you have a Diesel model, use the # 76217. The Curt # C13307 hitch you had looked at would certainly work, but the entire crossbar would be visible below the rear vehicle bumper, which some folks don't care for. I've edited a photo...
