Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ford Edge

Hey, everybody. Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today, on our 2018 Ford Edge, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class 3 two inch trailer hitch receiver. Now, this is what our hitch is going to look like installed. This is going to function great for any accessories or light duty towing even. So, if you and your friends want to load up a bike rack to go hit the trails, or maybe even a cargo carrier to bring your family on vacation, you're going to be really happy with how this performs. Now, our particular Edge here doesn't have this, but some of our customers wrote in and was wondering if the hitch will work with their tailgate assist or interfere with it, rather.

Now, when you put this hitch on, on a model that does have tailgate assist, it will work. However, if it does give you any issues or is finicky, our experts recommend to actually adjust the tailgate or hatch sensor itself. Now, in my opinion, where I think this hitch would really shine or what it would be best for is something like a bike rack. It's going to give us plenty of clearance. That way we won't have to worry about any contact from our rack to our vehicle. Now, if you're planning on doing any light duty towing, I would recommend the Tekonsha T-One vehicle wiring harness. That way your trailer can be set up with working lights.

So, like I said, this is a Class 3 hitch, so it's going to utilize that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. It's also going to have a reinforced collar for extra strength. Now, the pinhole is going to be the standard 5/8 size. Now, it does not come with the pen-in clip, but if you need one, you can find it on etrailer.com. It's also going to have a plate style safety chain loop openings. They're going to give us plenty of room to use just about any size safety chain hook that you might have. Now, as far as the weight capacities go, it's going to have a 600 pound maximum towing weight rating.

So, that's going to be the amount of weight pushing down on our hitch. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating, that's going to be 4,000 pounds. So, the amount of weight pulling on our hitch. So, whatever your trailer weighs plus anything you might have on it. Now, it is always a good idea that you check with your owner's manual to make sure you can pull that much weight.

Now, Curt does require the use of a stabilizer strap with all non-trailer loads. If you need one, you can pick one up on etrailer.com.Now, I'm going to give you a couple of measurements. These are going to help you when figuring out which hitch-mounted accessories to use. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, it's about 11-1/2 inches. You're going to use that measurement to figure out if you need to get a ball mount with either a drop or a rise. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the rear bumper is about 5 inches. You're going to use that measurement to figure out if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in the upright position without making contact with the bumper. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's install the hitch together. To begin our installation, we're going to remove these plastic underbody panels right behind our rear tire. They're going to be held in place by four fasteners. Here, here and these two nuts up here. We're going to remove these with the 5-1/2 millimeter socket, and these nuts up here we're going to get off with the 10 millimeter.Just pull it down, out of the way, and set it off to the side. We're going to do that same thing on the other side. Now, we can go ahead and lower the exhaust, but before we do that, I like to use a support strap from side to side. That way when we do lower it, we can control how fast it comes down. Now, we're going to have two rubber isolator hangers that we're going to have to remove. One here, and there will be the exact same set up on the other side of the muffler on the driver's side. To get them off, what I like to do is spray them down with a little bit of penetrating oil and it makes life a little bit easier. Once you have them sprayed down, you can take a pry bar and pry it off like that. Now, I'm going to do the same thing on the other side. Now, what we're going to do is remove this heat shield behind your back bumper. Here on the edge of the bumper, it's going to be held in place with multiple 5-1/2 millimeter fasteners. Then, here in the center, there's going to be one 10 millimeter nut we're going to have to take off. Once you have everything removed, pull it down and set it off to the side. Now, we can work on getting our hardware in place.First, I'd like to point out our attachment points that we're going to be using. On the passenger side, we're going to use this hole and this hole. Then, on the side, we're going to use this hole that's closest to the rear of the car. That's going to be the exact same set up on the driver's side. So, we're going to take the coiled end of our fish wire and put it in this hole and push it towards the back of the vehicle. Now, it's going to come out of the frame rail right in front of the rear bumper. You're going to have to reach up there a little ways to find it, and what I like to do, this end here with no coil, you can actually kind of pinch it down. That way it doesn't fall off into the hole. Now, on the coiled end, what we're going to do is take a spacer block and put that on first. Then, a carriage bolt and get that threaded on to the fish wire. Then, we can grab our other end. We're going to work that hardware into the frame rail and pull it through like that. Now, we're going to use that same exact method for the rest of the holes. Now, with an extra set of hands, we can put our hitch into place. We're going to take the ends of our fish wires and put them through the corresponding holes in the hitch itself. Then, we can raise it up and over the exhaust. Since all of our hardware is coming through, you can remove any of the fish wires, take a flange nut and just get it started hand tight. Now, we're going to want to get one nut on each side. That way the hitch will support itself while we finish the rest of the hardware. Now, with all of our hardware in place and hand tight, we can use a 3/4 inch socket to snug it all down. Now, we can use a torque wrench to torque all of our hardware down. You can find that torque specification in your instructions. Now, we need to work on trimming up our panels. We're first going to start with the heat shield panel. Now, on each side, we're going to cut this little section out here that I marked right in front of the hole. Now, this is pretty thin plastic and you can use some tin snips, a rotary tool or even a sharp knife to get it done. Now, since our heat shield panel actually has to slide in under this metal heat shield, and we lost a little bit of room to work with since our hitch is in place, it does make it a little easier to get the plastic heat shield in that we trimmed if you remove these two 10 millimeter nuts. That way we can kind of bend this down and have a little more room to work with. Now, we can go ahead and reinstall our panel. With our panel in place, we can re-secure it. Now, we can go ahead and re-secure our metal heat shield. Now, we can trim our under body panels. Now, we're going to do this to each side. I went ahead and marked out where we're going to be trimming, and you can also find the diagram in your instructions, and we go ahead and do the same thing to the other panel. So, now we can put our panel back into place. Now, we can rehang our exhaust. So, push it up and slide it back into the hanger. Now, once that is supported on its own, we can go ahead and remove our strap. That will do it for our look at and installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2018 Ford Edge.

Installed the C13234 trailer receiver hitch on my 2017 Ford Edge. This hitch allowed me to reinstall all original parts, which was important to me, and the other hitches did not allow. I did not have help and did not have a lift. It took a little longer, but was easier than I expected! The video was a big help. It told me everything I needed to do to get the job done. Much better than printed instructions. I installed the Curt Trailer Wiring Harness C56292 first, and glad I did. It was nice not having the hitch in the way when finishing the wiring. 486211

After several attempts I am able to get the hands free liftgate feature to work. Nowhere as easily as before unfortunately. I've found that it only works if you actually contact the tow hitch (at three specific points noted in the attachment) directly with the top of your foot. Fairly slowly of course. You don't want to accidentally hit your shin bone. What I don't know is if all Edge Sports will respond the same. 568971

I consider myself a pretty good do-it-yourselfer and get immense satisfaction out of the challenge. The Curt class 3 installation DIY video really helps! Video shows Ford Edge on a lift, but on the ground (no jacking or lifting needed) where everything is accessible. Don't forget to have a good 1" adjustable strap to hold exhaust low enough to fit Curt trailer hitch between dual exhaust outlets. Use a little floor jack in the middle to balance and adjust to a desired height (note: cover area with cardboard where trailer hitch meets jack). I finished the trailer hitch in a little over 1-1/2 hours. 485768

Over all the product seems good. Instructions left a little to be desired. Online video was excellent. The problem I have is that the lift gate no longer operates with the foot. The ad said it would but I'm sad to say not true. 497108

Comments

According to our Install crew and the folks at Curt, the only spot on the rear of the vehicle where the liftgate sensors will be affected would be at the middle of the vehicle right around the receiver opening. If you try to either side of the receiver tube, and modify your foot motion to get a little closer to the underside of the vehicle, the auto liftgate should work. Keep in mind, youll need to have the key fob on you in order for the sensors to operate.

I have now decided it was operator head space when it came to the lift gate. Its all in where you place your foot. When properly placed the lift gate works great. I have had no problems.

Very happy I purchased this for our 2018 Edge, it fits perfectly, and etrailer.com has the best instructions, especially with the video, that was a huge help. I was able to install it very easily just from watching the video. 612551

I chose the Curt hitch as it also has side tabs so even I couldn't mess up the alignment. Installation was pretty straightforward with one exception. It should be noted that those who do not have a service lift, reinstalling the rear valence/heat shield is easier of you remove the muffler heat shield as well. I had the Edge on ramps and it was so much simpler with the muffler heat shield removed. 599202

Curt Trailer hitch and wiring for Ford Edge. Great product. Everything went as expected. Well made and fits perfect. My only recommendation is that you do not open the package in your living room. You may end up with tiny shot blast beads all over the place like I did. Would not hesitate to buy another one or to deal with etrailer. 597584

I looked at the different hitches available for my 2015 Ford Edge Sel and decided on the Curt C13234 because you are able to reinstall the heat shield that attaches to the rear bumper skin. This hitch was fairly straight forward to install. The video helps considerably. I plan to use the hitch for a bike rack. I am always happy with the service and product line up that etrailer offers. 593930

Still loving my hitch. Works great absolutely no issues. In fact when my lease is up with this Edge, I will remove and use on my next vehicle, probably another Edge. Or at the very least sell to another Edge owner. Thank you for the follow-up, very much appreciated.

I gave the 2 stars because of the fast delivery of the product and for the beat quality of the product. I had problems with install of the wiring harness. I called for suggestions and was told to use a coat hanger to pull the harness up. Problem on my car, the harness plugs could not be pulled through because the factory plug was in the way and could not be removed. I had to try and remove it, cut the wires, fish the harness wire up and then splice them together again. The passenger side was harder because the fish wire was sent to smaller area of the frame. Wires are just long enough. The hitch was easier but the video shows easy installation because they have removed the entire exhaust system. This allows the installer to reach into the rear of the frame to pass the backing plate and bolt. Reaching into the space between frame and bumper is difficult since you can only use two fingers to feed the parts in. At times it is difficult to feed the fish wire into the correct spot. The rest of the installation was easy once the bolts were in place. 293784

  • Bike Rack Recommendations For 2018 Ford Edge SEL
  • I recommend the Saris Bones EX 3 Bike Rack - Adjustable Arms - Trunk Mount part # SA803 for the 2018 Ford Edge SEL. It fits all models of the Ford Edge and carries 3 bikes. The Saris Bones is a great option because of it's anti-sway cradles that secure the bikes to the rack. It also features adjustable arms so there is less of a need for a bike frame adapter bar on women's and children's bikes. While I do think the Saris Bones trunk mounted rack is a great option for you, however if...

  • Best Hitch Size for 2018 Ford Edge
  • Any time a vehicle has both 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitches available for it we tend to recommend the larger 2-inch size. There are several good reasons. Typically there is not much increase in cost, but there is usually a substantial increase in weight capacity. For example, the 1-1/4-inch hitches like Curt # C12140 usually have a tongue weight (TW) rating of no more than 350-lbs, but the 2-inch Class III hitches like Draw-Tite # 75234 and Curt # C13234 have TW ratings that are roughly...

  • The three 2-inch Class III trailer hitches available for your 2017 Ford Edge SEL, shown on the linked page, do not differ much in their installation processes, but one among them, Draw-Tite # 75234, will offer a more discrete appearance since it has a concealed cross tube while the others have a cross tube that will remain visible after installation. This particular hitch also offer slightly higher weight capacities than the others. None of the hitches requires you to do any drilling...

  • Do Draw-Tite Hitch Receivers for 2015 Ford Edge SEL Require Support Strap Like the Curt Hitch
  • The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75214 that fits your 2015 Ford Edge SEL does not require the support strap, part # 18050, like the Curt Receiver # C13234 does. The strap is required per Curt's warranty when carrying any non-trailer loads like a bike rack or cargo carrier. The other Draw-Tite # 75234 for the Edge SEL doesn't require the strap either. This hitch has a more hidden look since all you see when installed is the receiver tube and the safety chain loops.

I have included a picture showing where the panel gets trimmed. I have also included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop...

  • Swagman 2-Bike Platform Rack for 2017 Ford Edge
  • I checked the installation videos for the various 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitch sizes offered for your 2017 Ford Edge, including hitch parts # 75234, # C13234 and # 75214. Most install so that there is about 5-inches of space from the hitch pin hole to the rear edge of the bumper cover. The Swagman G10 2-Bike Platform Rack # S64682 also has 5-inches of clearance when it is empty and folded up so this rack may touch the bumper cover. For a similar Swagman frame-mount carrier that gives...

  • Easiest Trailer Wiring Harness to Install on a 2017 Ford Edge Sport
  • The Tekonsha Wiring Harness # 118677 is a T-connector that plugs into the wiring of your 2017 Ford Edge Sport behind both tail lights. It's a direct plug and play so there's no splicing or wire cutting necessary and will be a lot easier than a hardwire option. I've linked an install video on a 2015 Ford Edge which will be the same as on yours. If you also need a ball mount the Curt # C45036 is a great option because it includes the hitch ball and pin and clip. It's a 2 inch hitch...

  • Differences Beteween Curt Class III Trailer Hitch C13234 and C13224 for a 2015 Ford Edge SEL
  • The Curt Class III hitch, part C13224 is being replaced by the # C13234. Both hitches have the same stability and towing capacity, but the # C13234 fits ALL models of the 2015 Edge, while the C13224 fits all models with the exception of the Sport model. Curt is replacing the C13224 because fit-wise, the C13234 is more versatile and it makes more sense to have one hitch application that fits all models of a given vehicle. If you'll be using the hitch for towing purposes, you'll likely...

  • How to Activate Hands-Free Liftgate on a 2016 Edge Sport With Curt # C13234 Installed
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13234 should still allow you to activate the hands-free liftgate as it has been tested. In the attached video of this trailer hitch on a 2015 Ford Edge you can see our installer activating the liftgate by passing his foot under the trailer hitch but typically what we see is that you have to use a kicking motion as if you are kicking a ball. I have attached a photo showing the best locations to try activating a liftgate when a trailer hitch is installed...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Ford Edge Sport With Hidden Crosstube
  • When the Curt hitch part # C13234 is installed on your 2015 Ford Edge Sport it will have a visible crosstube like in the picture I attached. If you wanted a hitch that doesn't have a visible crosstube you would instead want the part # 75234 which has also been confirmed as a fit for your vehicle.

  • Will a Trailer Hitch Interfere with Hands Free Liftgate on a 2018 Ford Edge
  • The class III trailer hitch receiver I recommend for your 2018 Ford Edge is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13234 which is a direct fit that installs using pre-existing holes in the frame rail. The hands free liftgate sensor will be limited to areas directly away from the receiver tube. This means that it will still work but you will want to position your foot to either side of the receiver tube in order to activate the rear hatch release. I have attached an install video on...

  • Can Weight Distribution Be Used on 2015 Ford Edge with Class III Hitch
  • Yes, as long as your towing setup keeps your total loaded trailer weight within the limits of both the truck itself and the hitch that is installed on it you can use a weight distribution system so long as the hitch's safety sticker says it is approved for use with WD. The Class III hitches we offer for your 2015 Ford Edge include both models that are rated for use with WD, such as Draw-Tite # 75234, and ones that are NOT rated for this application, such as Curt # C13234. All 2-inch...

  • Why Do Some Curt Trailer Hitches Require Use of a Stabilization Strap for Bike Racks/Cargo Carriers
  • That is an excellent question; one that we have often wondered. Curt believes that the use of a stabilization strap reduces stress put on a trailer hitch when using said hitch for non-trailer loads. The thing is that this requirement is on some but not all hitches, regardless of what Class they are, and there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to the ones that have the requirement and those that do not. If it were me I would go with Draw-Tite hitch # 75234 since it does not require the...

  • Trailer Hitch and Twistep Pet Step for 2015 Ford Edge Titanium with Hands Free Liftgate
  • The Curt Hitch part # C13234 is a confirmed fit for your 2015 Ford Edge Titanium and will still allow you to use the hands-free liftgate but the sensor will be somewhat limited. We had a customer come back and send us a picture (attached) that shows where they were able to move their foot and have the sensor activate the liftgate. We actually carry the Twistep part # HE3052 as well!

  • 2015 Ford Edge Sport Hitch, Which is Less Visible Curt C13234 vs. Draw-Tight 75234
  • We don't have the drawings you are looking for, but if you check out the pictures I attached you will see that both the Draw Tite part # 75234 and the Curt # C13234 do not extend out past the rear bumper at all. Since you prefer the hidden cross tube the Draw Tite will be the hitch to go with. There isn't a version without the lower safety chain loops though.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2017 Ford Edge Sport Edition
  • Yes, we have three trailer hitch receiver options for your 2017 Ford Edge with the Sport package part # 75234, part # C13234, and part # C12140. I recommend using the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13234 as this hitch will not require near as much effort to install in comparison to the similar Draw-Tite hitch receiver. It is a Class III hitch receiver with a 2" opening. This fully welded trailer hitch receiver bolts onto your Ford Edge's frame with no welding required. Depending...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Ford Edge Sport without Visible Crosstube
  • When you install the Curt hitch onto your 2015 Ford Edge Sport you will either need to remove or trim the lower appearance panel to complete the install. The crosstube will be visible like what is shown in the install picture I attached. If you wanted a hitch that doesn't have a visible crosstube you would instead want the part # 75234 which has also been confirmed as a fit for your vehicle.

  • Troubleshooting Hands Free Liftgate Sensor on 2015 Ford Edge
  • The hands free liftgate on your 2015 Ford Edge has sensors that can be adjusted on your vehicle to better see movement of your foot. The sensor sees movement so a more obvious movement may not require the moving of the sensors for the hands free option to work more often. The Sensor is shaped like a moustache and can be adjusted to better see around your trailer hitch receiver # C13234.

This Class III hitch features a 4,000 pound towing weight capacity and a 600 pound tongue weight limit. It will use existing holes in the Ford Edge's frame for a no-drill installation. • The hitch I recommend for your 2018 Ford Edge SE is the Draw-Tite Class III hitch # 75234. This 2-inch hitch bolts on, no drilling needed, using the included hardware packet. You can see the installation steps in both the linked instructions and the video we made that shows a 2018 Edge. For a 4-pole wiring kit you can use kit # 118669 from Tekonsha which installs through plugging in connectors at the car's tail lights and running one wire up to the battery to power the harness. • What Is the Towing Capacity of a 2018 Ford Edge Titanium
  • The towing capacity of a 2018 Ford Edge Titanium with the 2.0L EcoBoost Engine is 3,500 lbs per the 2018 Ford Trailer Towing Guide. There are other models with a 2,000 lb towing capacity which have the 2.7L EcoBoost Engine. The length of the trailer is not relevant because it just needs to weigh less than your above towing capacity. In order to tow a trailer with your Ford Edge you will need the following parts: Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13234 Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring...
