Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

Hey everyone. Ryan here at etrailer.com.Today on our 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class III 2-inch trailer hitch receiver. My favorite thing about this hitch, although it is mostly visible, is that it's going to contour nicely to our vehicle body lines. Now this is a Class III hitch so it's going to have that 2-inch by 2-inch receiver tube opening. It's also going to have a reinforced collar for extra strength. It's going to have the standard 5/8 size pinhole. Which the hitch is not going to come included with the pin and clip, but if you need one, you can pick one up on etrailer.com.Now the safety chain openings are plate style. They're going to be very large and give you a lot of room to use just about any size safety chain hook that you might have.

It is going to have a gloss black powder coat finish which not only is going to look good, it's also going to help keep it protected from the elements. Now the hitch is going to have a 750-pound maximum tongue weight rating, so that's going to be the amount of weight pushing down on her hitch. It's going to have a 5,000-pound maximum gross trailer weight rating. That's going to be the amount of weight pulling on her hitch. So that's the weight of your trailer plus anything you might have on it.Now keep in mind, it is always a good idea to check with your Hyundai's owner's manual to make sure your car can pull that much weight. Now keep in mind that Curt does require these stabilizer straps for all non-trailer loads. If you need some, you can pick them up at etrailer.com.Now I'm going to give you a couple measurements.

You're going to use these to figure out which hitch-mounted accessories to use. From the ground to the top and side edge of the receiver tube opening is about 13 inches. You're going to use that measurement to figure out if you need to get a ball mount with either a drop or a rise. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the edge of our rear bumper, that's about 4-1/2 inches. You're going to use that measurement to figure out if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in the upright position without making contact with the bumper. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's install the hitch together. To begin our installation, I went ahead and lowered and removed our spare tire. On the driver's side, we're going to have a plastic panel.

Now we're going to need to remove that. To do that, up top there's going to be two 14-millimeter plastic nuts, and we'll loosen. They won't actually come off, but what you're going to want to do is just turn it to the left a handful of times. Then along the bottom side, we're going to have three pushpin style fasteners. Now to get those out, you can either use a trim panel removal tool, or even a flathead screwdriver will work just fine too. What you gotta do is put your tool underneath the head of the fastener, just kind of pry downward like that.

Now we can grab the panel with our hands, and pull downward, and set it off to the side. Now we're going to need to lower our exhaust, but before we do that, I actually like to use a safety strap and put it on one end of the vehicle to the other, and tighten it up a little bit. That way when we do lower the exhaust, we can control how fast it comes down. We're going to have to remove three rubber isolator hangers. One here by the tailpipe, and there'll be one in the passenger side of the muffler right there, and then one towards the center right here. To remove them, it's a good idea to spray a little lubricant on there, and that'll just help them come off a little easier. Then we can take a pry bar, and just pry it outward just like that.I'm going to go ahead and loosen up our strap a little bit to lower the exhaust to give us some working room.On each side of the frame rail, there's going to be a rubber plug just like this. We're going to need to remove it. And to do that you can take a flathead screwdriver, just get underneath it, and pull down like that. Go ahead and do that to the other side as well.Next, I'd like to point out our attachment points. Over here on the driver's side, we're going to use these two holes and this threaded hole on the bottom of the frame rail. As far as the hardware that we're going to use on the driver's side, in these two holes, we're going to have a half-inch carriage bolt, and it's going to come from the outside in like this, through our hitch as well, and what's going to secure that is a half-inch flange nut.For this hole, we're going to use a bolt and a conical tooth washer. You always want to make sure that the teeth on the washer are going to be facing the hitch. Now over here on the passenger side, that's going to be a little bit different. We're going to have four attachment points. These two holes and these two threaded holes on the bottom of the frame rail. For these two holes, we're going to use a 7/16th carriage bolt, and a 7/16th flange nut. The bolts are going to go in this way, and the flange nut will go on the other side. For the two threaded holes on the bottom of the frame rail, once again we're going to use these bolts and conical tooth washers. Once again, make sure that the teeth on the washer are going to face the hitch. Now before we put our hitch into place, it's a good idea to clean out our threaded holes, and I'm going to do that with a tube brush. If you need one you can pick one up on etrailer.com. Once you clean it out, make sure that your bolt can thread in easily. We're going to do that to the remaining holes that are threaded. All right, now with an extra set of hands, you can go ahead and put our hitch into place. And it's a good idea to get one bolt started on each side, that way the hitch will support itself while we work on the rest of the hardware.Just a pointer, this bolt here on the driver's side, you're going to have to do something a little different to get your flange nut on. What you're gonna want to do is push it about flush with the frame rail, and then take your nut and hold it in place over it, and then you can push your bolt forward, and thread it on that way. If you try to do it with the bolt pushed all the way out, this little bumper support is going to be in the way.Now with all of our hardware in place and hand tight, we can go ahead and snug them all down. Now we can use a torque wrench to torque all of our hardware down. You can find that torque specification in your instructions. With all of our hardware torqued down, now we can raise our exhaust back into position in the opposite way that we lowered it. And now with the exhaust secured, you can go ahead and remove our safety strap. Now we can go ahead and put our driver's side plastic panel back in place. And to finish up our installation, I went ahead and reinstalled our spare tire. And that'll do it for our look at and installation of the Curt Class III 2-inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe.

Hitch was purchased for 18' kia sorento lx. Shipped on time. Packaging was good. Hitch matched discription on website. Installation has minor issues, mainly due to confined space of the back end of the kia. 1.Passenger side carraige bolts were very snug. had to wack them through. 2. plastic guard removed from driver side did not go back in properly. the downward screw did not line back up with the hole. this is caused by the round top of the carraige bolt taking up the space that the plastic lip uses. recommend shaving lip on plastic guard. 3. finding room underneath to torque the bolts is frustrating. otherwise great product highly recommend. 568244

I must admit, was a bit nervous about ordering my hitch, wiring harness, ball and ball mount from etrailer due to a large number of negative reviews I had read. I noticed that most of these reviews were not recent but from years past. Not having any relationship with etrailer, my skepticism with this transaction was high, at the time of my order, but the unbeatable price, free shipping and video tutorials encouraged me to submit my order and take my chances. The order process was flawless and I was convinced that I was ordering to proper parts for may vehicle. My products arrived on the date promised and in great shape, after reviewing the video's once again, I tackled the installation process. The install went without issue. and I was testing my new towing capabilities in less than 2 hours with the electrical installed as well. I have no complaints with my etrailer experience and would not hesitate another purchase from etrailer. Thank you for you service and product. 375013

I just finished installing this a few hours ago so I haven't had a chance to test it but so far I am happy with it. It has a great looking glossy powder coat. Welds look clean and strong. And it fits my vehicle like a glove. Installation was a nightmare but that wasn't any fault of the product. I installed it laying on back on the garage floor on a 95-degree afternoon by myself. There was a lot of sweat, definitely a busted knuckle, and there may have been some cursing involved. There is absolutely no play when it comes to extra room to fit and maneuver the screws, bolts, and hitch itself. That may come across as a bad thing, but when I go to pull a trailer or a boat then I don't want any wiggle room. I want everything tight and firm. I'm not complaining about the tight fit, I just want to let everyone know that it takes some effort but will go together just like the instructions and video on this website show. Just take your time and you will be fine. 522695

Always ordered all my trailer hitches from etrailer.com since 2012. When order placed I get a follow up email immediately and then when they ship the merchandise which usually is the following work day. It takes approximately 3 to 4 days to receive my order and I get another confirmation email that it has been delivered with helpful videos and information on installation within the contents of the email. I’ve ordered both brands draw-tite and curt hitches with easy install myself and never had any problems with their products. Shipping is also a plus as they offer free shipping and their prices are the lowest I’ve found online. Thanks to the great staff there at etrailer.com 568540

Arrived in decent shape for the weight. Packing could be better though (tape was frustrating). Hitch was dirty, and grit was all over in the box. Heavy scratches on the powder coat here and there. The exposed portion was ok visually though. Functionally, bolts right up on my 2017 Sorento. Silicone spray those exhaust hangers and they come off nicely. Took about 1.5hrs to do complete hitch and harness install. Instruction photos too dark to be useful... used video from etrailer instead. I don't know why hardware is a mix of imperial and SI (metric). 2017, shouldn't it all be SI? 345066

Product was just the right fit installation was done in 42 minutes from start to finish muffler hangers where the hardest. All the holes lined up instructions where easy to follow and the video was a help also watched that first then did the install. I used my son to help hold it up for the first bolt after that it was easy for him to the finish the rest. Will be using this with my Hollywood 4 place bike carrier it looks sturdy enough to tow a small trailer, but anything else you would need a brake controller and electric brakes on the trailer the KIA in my opinion is not made for towing large trailers. Great product shipped fast and good costumer support and follow up from George at etrailer thanks again.. 271621

This is the same hitch that the factory installs. My only issue is that it sits pretty low, that that doesn't have anything to do with the hitch. It is very easy to install and extremely solid. I do use Airlift 1000 airbags to adjust for sag and improve the ride while towing a trailer with 300+ lbs of tongue weight. 466442

Trailer hitch and wiring kit were a “perfect” fit. All holes lined up properly all necessary nuts/bolts provided. Videos for installation are very helpful and provide clear views of all the key issues for a simple professional installation. I found the paper instructions for both confusing and poor quality graphics. Video the only way to go! My experience with initial ordering, delivery and follow up questions were very good. These folks really know what quality customer service is as well a produce an excellent product. 409929

I ordered three products from e-Trailer and was impressed with what arrived at my door, needing a bike rack that would hold four full size bikes I searched many different sites. E-trailer had the best reviews and descriptions of each which made my decision easy, the quality of each product showed as soon as I opened the boxes. The hitch was easy to install and looked good on the truck, the bike rack was just as easy to install and put four full size bike on. Being able to fit four bikes was a very big part of why I ordered it. We had recently upgraded all the kids to new bikes which the old rack would never have handled. As we prepared for vacation the four bikes fit nicely, it does take a little thinking of how to best lay them out but after figuring that out I was impressed with how well they fit and how sturdy the rack was. Thank you for your help in making this vacation a success. 287439

Application is a 2018 Kia Sorento. Well, you certainly could argue that this is now the heaviest piece of metal on this car. Very substantial, heavy metal attractive hitch nicely powder coated. Arrived with no visible damage and installation generally went without a hitch. (Sorry). Generally. Turns out, whether due to manufacturing tolerances on the hitch or in South Korea, the hitch was NOT an exact fit. Bolt holes did not align perfectly and despite slots, they were out of reach of the threads on the bottom pre-threaded holes. Solution was to insert and tighten sideways mounting carriage bolts to stretch the hitch an ocean rabbit or two in order to get the bottom bolts into their threads properly. then it was an ordeal of back and forth tightening and loosening to slowly coax the hitch into position for bolting, and then into best position for strength. Even after all that, the metal plate that bolts to the frame rails never did align well with an (eventually) modest gap between the passenger frame rail and the hitch's side plate for that rail. See photo (doesn't show it the best but there's a gap). I cranked those carriage bolts as tight as i could without either them giving up or me bending the framerail on the truck. So, now on the passenger side i have two carriage bolts and two vertical bolts carrying the hitch basically in shear, without the full benefit and strength of the clamping effect of that side plate. It will probably be OK for my uses but i'll need to be extra vigilant retightening for a while and it is definitely compromised strength in my non-professional opinion. Other than that, installation instructions and everything were as represented. I probably would have gone with 3 stars but the hitch may be a little over-built so i should be OK. Still, a real bear to install properly. 569053

Needed a hitch fast for my 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. I knew where to go. You had the hitch instock at a great price. Was delivered fast. Received it last night and installed it last night without a problem. I have bought and installed many hitches from your company without any problems. You guys are the greatest. Sorry for the ugly rusty ball in the pictures, it has been used for many years on several cars with your hitches. 594759

This makes six times I done this now and wanted a premium product for this install......at a modest price. Curt and etrailer. com came through for me. While installation instructions were straight forward, I chose to have my mechanic install rather than crawling around on the driveway. Had nice comments from mechanics on quality of the product. 424256

I ordered this Curt hitch for my 2016 Kia Sorento, the wiring kit that plugged directly into the factory pre-wired loom for towing, and the additional hardware to properly mount the 4-prong wiring connectors. Everything arrived very quickly and the installation went perfectly. After lowering the spare tire, removing the plastic cover behind the left rear wheel to access the wiring loom connections, and lowering the exhaust, the hitch bolted directly onto the frame with no issues. After torquing the bolts and completing the wiring, I re-installed the cover protecting the wiring, re-installed the 3 exhaust hangers, and re-installed the spare tire. I found that reversing my SUV onto a pair of ramps to raise the rear end provided sufficient space to install the hitch myself in my garage. 198437

The hitch is built really heavy duty. I would give it five stars except for the fact the installation did not go smoothly. I installed this hitch onto a 2018 Kia Sorento. This Curt hitch didn't install as easily as a Towrite hitch I purchased for our Kia Soul. All was going good until I went to install the carriage bolt that was on the top, forward hole on the passenger side. The slot in the hitch didn't quite line up with the hole in the car frame. Caused the bolt to be at a slight angle and would not slip all the way through the frame hole. You are working above the muffler and it's tight quarters. I was concerned about buggering the threads, but I had to take a drift and hammer and drive the bolt in. It was that or take the hitch all the way out and enlarge the slot some on the top edge of the hitch bracket. Luckily after driving the bolt through the bolt threads were ok and the nut went on. All other bolts installed fairly easy, but that one misaligned hole caused the job to take almost two hours. 493895

Had it installed at local shop because I do not have a lift. It went right in and took them like 20 mins maybe including wiring harness (do wish it had wiring harness face plate spot). I purchased my hitch with the free shipping and UPS lost it. Etrailer did a trace and then sent me a replacement. I just installed it and following the video they have online it went on just as easily as they showed it. Everything lined up perfectly. I didn't have to do anything else but follow the directions. The paperwork was too dark to read but not needed except for the torque specs. The installation was very simple. I purchased it to haul my bicycles with a hitch rack and it is just what I wanted. 739595

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • Best Trailer Hitch, Wiring Harness and Ball Mount for 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe
The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe is the Curt # C13195 because of Curt's strong reputation for manufacturing very high-quality hitches that are also assembled in the USA. This Class III, 2" trailer hitch is a complete bolt-on installation so it will not require any drilling into the frame of your '19 Santa Fe. This hitch has a black powder coat finish which helps protect it from corrosion and also has a 5,000 lb towing capacity and 750 lb tongue weight capacity....

  • Hitch, Wiring and Brake Controller for 2018 Kia Sorento 3.3L V6 AWD
Certainly a vehicle with a 3.3L V6 engine is typically a better choice for towing than one with an engine having half that displacement. Still, the 1.5L Ford does carry a 2000-lb maximum trailer weight rating, enough for a small pop-up or teardrop. But the 5000-lb-towing rated Kia is definitely the better option, not just for its power but also since it is heavier and is an all-wheel-drive vehicle that should provide a more stable towing experience. For the Kia we have 2-inch Class III...

  • Why Does Curt Require Stabilizer Strap When Carrying Bike Rack and Not Draw Tite
I have spoke with my contact at Curt numerous times regarding the requirement of the stabilizing/support strap, # 18050. Curt requires this strap in order to alleviate the leveraging affect that a non-trailer load places on a hitch like part # C13195. At Curt they like to use the example of carrying a gallon of milk. Think of the strain that would be put on your arm if it is extended opposed to if you carry the milk close to your body. This is what also happens with a hitch when a bike...

  • Is Drilling Required to Install Trailer Hitch on 2017 Dodge Durango
Nope, you sure won't. There is absolutely no drilling required to install a trailer hitch on your 2017 Dodge Durango, it is a complete bolt-on installation. I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75713 because it will fit even if you have a full-sized spare tire under your vehicle, unlike the option from Curt. For wiring which will give you a 4-way connector and allow you to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness # C56336 if your Durango does NOT have the factory towing package....

  • Comparing the Curt and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitches for a 2019 Kia Sorento
The weight ratings for the Curt # C13195 and Draw-Tite # 75908 for your 2019 Kia Sorento do differ but since they both exceed the max weight ratings for your Sorento (found in your owner's manual) they don't really play an important role when comparing these 2 hitches. The biggest difference between the Curt and Draw-Tite options is that Curt requires that the support strap # 18050 be used for any non-trailer loads like a bike rack whereas the Draw-Tite doesn't have this same requirement. For wiring which will give your Hyundai a 4-way connector and allow you to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness #...

If you're going to be towing a trailer you'll also need wiring to power the trailer's lights. If your Sorento has the tow package use # 118269. If not use # C56256. • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2016 Kia Sorento
Any trusted mechanic or an RV dealer with a service center can install a trailer hitch for your 2016 Kia Sorento. If you want to use the hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier I actually recommend Draw-Tite hitch # 75908. The Curt hitch # C13195 requires the use of a stabilization strap # 18050 for any non-trailer accessory whereas the Draw-Tite hitch does not. If you plan on towing then either hitch will work fine. I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball...

  • Why is Curt 2-inch Class III Hitch C13195 for 2016 Kia Sorento Not Rated for Weight Distribution
You are correct that the Curt 2-inch Class III hitch # C13195, and the other similar hitches offered for your 2016 Kia Sorento V6 with tow package, cannot be used with weight distribution systems. This relates not to the hitches themselves but to the strength of the vehicle's frame structure. This is enough to meet the hitches' base rating of 5000-lbs towing weight, but it is not strong enough to allow for a higher weight distribution rating. You can add sway control independent...

  • Trailer Hitch Needed for a 2017 Kia Sorento Carrying a Cargo Carrier with a 2 inch Shank
The T-WCR 2849 cargo carrier with a ramp that you referenced has a 2 inch shank on it since it is used for more of a heavy duty application. Both the Draw-Tite # 75908 and the Curt # C13195 trailer hitch options would be compatible with it as they are Class III hitches with 2 inch receiver openings. Out of both of them I recommend you go with the Curt # C13195 option for your 2017 Kia Sorento because it has a 750-lb Tongue Weight (TW) rating. Since the cargo carrier is rated for 500...

Yes, the Curt trailer hitch # C13195 will work for all models of the 2016 Kia Sorento including the L with front wheel drive 4 cylinder engine. If you plan on using the hitch for any non-trailer loads like a bike rack, Curt requires you to use a stabilization strap like the # 18050 for warranty purposes. This is why I would instead recommend the Draw-Tite hitch # 75908 for your Sorento. One of the most popular bike racks among customers with your vehicle is the Thule Hitching Post...
