Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe - Curt

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, we're going to be installing a Class-3, 2-inch Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver with part number C13152. And this is what it's going to look like once you get it installed. Most of it's going be tucked up underneath, but there is still going to be some of it visible on the outside. It has a five-eighths inch hitch pin hole, and a hitch pin and clip, which is not included, but can be picked up on our website with part number PC3. It is a plate style safety chain loop, so it's going to be quite wide, although it is a little thicker, but you should still be able to use your safety chains at just about any angle. It also features a reinforced collar. It is a 6,000 pound gross trailer weight, which is the weight that it pulls behind it, and a 900 pound tongue weight, which is the force going down on your receiver hitch tube. It also works with weight distribution systems, and while utilizing one, it increases the gross trailer weight rating to 8,000 pounds, while the tongue weight rating remains the same at 900 pounds. And now I'm going to give you some measurements to help you on deciding on accessories, such as ball mounts, bike racks and cargo carriers.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear of the bumper, it's going to be about 5.5 inches. And from the inside top edge of the receiving tube to the ground, it's going to be about 13.25 inches. Now to begin our install, we're going to need to remove the spare tire. We've already gone ahead and done that. Next we'll need to remove the drivers and passengers side under-panels. You'll need to remove the push pins, and then just pull it down.

You can use a screwdriver, or body panel tool to remove your push pins. And now repeat the same process on the other side. Now when removing your panels, if the nuts do not pull off with the panel, you just need to unthread this, and then you can reinsert it back into the panel you removed. Before you remove your exhaust, you'll want to put a strap up to catch the exhaust to keep it from falling down too far and causing any damage to the vehicle. Once you've got a strap in place that'll catch it, you can take the exhaust down. Next we'll need to remove our exhaust hangers to lower it down.

You want to use some spray lubricant to make it easier to remove the hangers. To remove the hangers, find a good place to pry from, and just push them off. You need to do that for all three hangers. There's one located here, here and here towards the front of the vehicle. Now on our drivers side, you're going to need to take the bumper alignment pin, and bend it down a little bit so it's out of the way of our hardware. Just enough to give you clearance to put your bolts in.

Now we'll look at our passenger side, it doesn't look like it's going to be a problem, but if on yours it's a little bit closer to the hole, you may need to bend this side as well. Now before we put our hitch up, we're going to want to clean out our weld nuts to make sure that the bolts go in clean without holing. You'll use some spray lubricant, and a brush to clean it out. You can get this brush on our website with part number 814092. Do this for all four holes. Now it's recommended to grab an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place, so we're going to line it up, up there, and get a bolt started on each side. You want your conical tooth washers installed with your bolts with the teeth pointing up towards the hitch. And once you've got it loosely installed, the hitch will hold itself in place so you can install your remaining hardware. Now when putting your hitch into place, make sure that the hitch goes between the frame and the bumper alignment pin on the passenger side. Next on the drivers side we're going to install our carriage bolts. Starting from the outside of the frame, slide the bolt through the hole, and you need to wiggle your hitch up and down a little bit to get it in place. Now do this for both holes. Now get the larger flange nuts and thread them on, and do this for both bolts. Now on your rear bolts here, you may need to bend your bumper alignment pins slightly out of the way, so you can get your hardware installed. Now repeat this process on the other side. And the only difference on your passenger side is you'll have a plate that needs to be installed on the outside when you slide your bolts through. And again, you may need to bend your bumper alignment pin out of the way to get your hardware installed. And now we need to go back and tighten up all our hardware. The lower weld nut bolts are going to use a 17 millimeter. And your upper carriage bolts will tighten down with a 19 millimeter. And now with everything tightened down, we can go back and torque our hardware to the specifications in the instructions. Now with our hitch installed, all we need to do is put our exhaust back up, our side panels, and then reinstall our spare tire. And do this on both sides. And that completes our installation of the Class-3, 2-inch Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe.

The hitch seems extremely sturdy. Installation instructions were good, the video even better. It was my own stupidity that made me take some time to realise there are three separate hangers for the exhaust that need to be released, to allow the exhaust to be moved sufficiently out of the way to allow fitting. Once I moved the exhaust, it was fine to fit. Note that the hitch is heavy, and without a board or raising the car, the installation work is pretty physical! I give the product 5 stars, and I wanted to give etrailer 5 stars as well for their excellent site, great videos, and strong follow up. However, despite all that they shipped the product several days after the order was placed, and so missed the expected delivery date by close to a week - which was irritating 256488

Quality of product is excellent. Very tight fitting unit. Videos were very good and very helpful. Would have liked in the instructions to make it clear that both bumper alignment pins need to be moved, not just maybe the one on the passenger side, it has to be moved. Also would have liked to have seen how the most forward exhaust system rubber mount was disconnected. I'm sure there is a better way to do it than I did, LOL, it was a real hassle. 486378

I purchased the T-one vehicle wiring harness, along with the Curt trailer hitch receiver, for my new Santa Fe Sport. The dealership Service Department did the installation for me in order to maintain my warranty on the vehicle. The cost of the tow hitch set-up and the cost of dealership installation was significantly lower than if I were to have had the dealership order the parts. In fact, it was more than a 50% savings. The Hyundai salesman and Service Department were so very impressed with the price and quality of the tow hitch and kit, I was delivered, that they requested eTrailer.com website from me for referral to their future customers that are looking for additional ways to save money in their new car buying experience. My vehicle look exactly like the pictures provided on etrailer.com website. My Santa Fe happens to be the same color as well. Again, I had the trailer hitch receiver, along with the tow kit, installed professionally at the dealership for more than 50% of the price if I would have purchased the vehicle with the hitch included. All parts were exact fitting as described, e.g., no welding, modifications, and so forth. 154177

The hitch was EXTREMELY easy to install. I work for a Hyundai dealership and our cost on the factory hitch was nearly 3 times as much as the Curt model. After comparing both side by side, I can honestly say that the OEM part is inflated only due to the fact that it has the manufacturer's logo on it. The install was exactly the same for this hitch as the OEM model, just at a fraction of the cost. With eTrailer's "How To" videos, anyone with some basic tools and ability to follow directions can do this install. While having a friend assisting you with holding the hitch to the frame is nice, it is definitely doable as a solo job. Thanks so much to the team at etrailer for the amazing price, customer service, & support. You made this WAY easier than it initially appeared! 387552

Thanks so much for the follow up! I’ve recommended many people to etrailer for their towing needs over the last year, not only due to the quality of products, but the customer service as well! I work at a Hyundai dealership and I can attest that the hitch setup is a PERFECT fit and a far better value than OEM at a 1/4 of the cost! Thank you guys for offering great prices, easy to follow instructional videos, & excellent customer support!

Great video to prep me for doing the job, I used an axle Jack to support the muffler once the hangers were off. Needed some help when holding the hitch up to the frame, after that it was very easy. 227041

I just wanted to say that it's been over a year since I purchased this hitch receiver. It has held up really well. The install was incredibly easy from the instructions and the video. Honestly, my biggest challenge was cleaning the rust out of the threads of my vehicle's undercarriage. We use this thing all the time for our bike rack and cargo rack. I have no doubt it would work well in any other scenario that it is meant for, with regard to towing. I would definitely purchase from etrailer again. I probably saved over $500 by purchasing from them and doing this myself. It took me less than an hour. 574858

Fits perfectly on 2018 Santa Fe Sport. Watch the video for detailed instructions on a 2017 Santa Fe Sport (exactly the same). Took me about 90 minutes start to absolute finish with only jack stands. If you don't have a torque wrench, be aware the torque specs are pretty high - be sure to use a long ratchet or breaker bar and tighten like crazy. Works great with C58000 adapter and 37185 4/7 pole connector (see pictures). 458735

Perfect fit and extremely easy installation on my wife's 2013 SantaFe Sport. Only took me about 30 minutes, after watching the etrailer installation video. Best of all, the hitch didn't cost me $697.00 as it is listed on the Hyundai accessories website - that's absolutely crazy!! I would recommend you check to see if you have the factory tow connection already on the vehicle before ordering the wiring kit. All I needed was the C56151 kit, which plugs directly into the factory plug just behind the driver side rear tire. I ordered everything before checking and selected "without factory tow package", since there wasn't a tow hitch already installed on the vehicle. The wiring kit recommended was C56184, which will work, but is a more complicated installation. It would be great if there was a prompt telling you to check for the factory plug, prior to ordering the wiring kit. My wife is now very happy that she can tow our small utility trailer anywhere she wants. THANKS etrailer.com! 234405

I watched the video before ordering. A must. I was able to see what I needed to find out before ordering. It was very helpful. I found out the wiring I had and was able to order the correct harness. It was sent very quickly. I opened the box and started . It took me (doing it alone) less then 1&1/2 hours from start to finish including wiring. It fit like a glove and I am very pleased with the quality of the produce and the information they provided on the video. PS: you may want to have not only the required sockets but open end/box wrenches as well as it helped me with the installation. Great product Thanks 530190

I purchased the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver on Sunday 3/23 and had it at my front door a few days later. The hitch was installed on a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4 by my local Hyundai dealer in less than an hour. I also purchased the Curt Hitch Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers - 8" Long - C45791 as the hitch will be used for our Thule bike rack. This allows for ample clearance from the back of the vehicle. As far as eTrailer.com and their customer support staff...they were excellent to do business with. Very helpful and knowledge. It was welcoming to get personal responses instead of auto-emails. Great user-friendly website too! 123664

Arrived quickly, so that's a plus. The way this slides into place on the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe there is an alignment pin where the bumper is slid forward during the car assembly that is close to where the bolts are. I was impressed by the precise construction of the hitch that it slide up into place without interfering with alignment pins. I did have to bend the driver's side pin just a touch (as instructed by the instructions) to get a proper socket on one of the large nuts to apply the correct torque. I'm talking 3 millimeters or something. Not a worry at all, all stock use of the pin is completely retained. Heavy duty powdercoating. Not that you'll get much chance to appreciate it, since once it's installed, the hitch is super stealthy. The picture attached is taken just a couple feet off the ground. I installed it in my driveway without a lift, just a couple of drive up ramps. I don't LOVE rolling around on concrete, but meh, it's totally doable. The time estimates given, I'm guessing, are for using a lift. From start to finish, including being called in for dinner, and picking up all my tools afterward, it took me a couple hours. 80549

I installed the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver onto a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The dealership was going to charge $500.00 for a hitch receiver and $110.00 per hour for labor. I am a data analyst and work on a computer all day and have to real experience with tools. But reading the reviews gave me confidence I could install the hitch receiver myself, which I did. The installation took me ~1.5 hours. The installation video was very helpful. Doing the installation myself saved me a lot of money. The hitch fits like a glove. 388696

eTrailer; Thank you. All went exactly as advertised and shown via your internal/YouTube videos. I installed C13152 on my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe SPORT (2.4L). Per your internal video, I simply bent the bumper pins out of the way with a deep socket/pipe. I didn't even move the exhaust for the install. However, i'll probably have to move it when I torque the nuts. This hitch clears the stock bumper, which means it's lower than the exhaust tip. I wanted to use C13153; which is about 4" higher, ... basically, level with the exhaust. However, this fits (not 100% sure it fits the SPORT too) the GLS/Limited model, which has a removable cover to hide the hitch. If you can find replacement portion of the stock Sport bumper, I bet many would be interested in that option. I saw some old (2012) chats where Australian users cut a hole in their bumper. Ultimately, my towing needs are minor, so I went with the C13152. I'm sure i'll find the appropriate ball mount rise for my needs. 281194

Well ...My trailer was so rotten with non-functioning lights, that I didnt have a chance to test it mainly the wiring harness that ties to the stock trailer connections. On top of that, I moved to a new house where I cant store a trailer, so I sold it. My etrailer Curt hitch still needs to be broken in! Regardless, I still regard your company in high regard and recommend you anytime I hear of someone looking for a hitch.

This is the perfect rack if you think you might use your hitch for anything down the road - trust me, you will upgrade. Installation was straightforward. A word of caution. If you live where roadsalt is used, pick up an M10x1.25 tap and chase the weldnut threads in the frame. Mine were impossible to get the bolt into. Five minutes with a tap and I could thread them in by hand. I bought this hitch to carry a bike rack (for now - see upgrades!) and just a word of advice. The Thule T2 Classic is a great two bike tray. According to the Thule information, it will not fold up vertically on our 2015 Santa Fe Sport. It will work just fine. In my pics you can see the wheel tray comes close when the rack is centered. It's close but there's not enough play to hit the bumper. Both are great products - buy them from eTrailer! 388730

2015 Kia Sorento SXL I followed the online (youtube, I think) tutorial to a T and everything went great. The only hard part was getting under my vehicle! Once there I used a Dremmel to grind off the metal pegs that are needed to be removed. That part took me about 10 min total. The whole install took me maybe 45 min to an hour, and I am pretty handy. I have had zero issue with the Curt hitch and I have already had it under load for 3,000 miles. Although, I am not trailering something very heavy. Maybe a few hundred lbs. It looks pretty good, seems durable, and fits perfectly. Good product. Fast shipping. 609460

The hitch was easy to install following the directions, with a few exceptions: 1) We experienced some difficulty removing the rubber mounts to lower the exhaust. The directions were a bit unclear on how to do it without the special tool. We ended up doing it by using some lubricant and wedging a flat-head screwdiver into the hole of the mount, alongside the metal and just pushing on the mount. 2) When raising the hitch into position we ended up on the wrong side of the bumper locater pin. We did not have to bend/cut it, as we were able to lower and re-raise the hitch on the inside (between the frame and the pin). 3) There was some sort of caulk-like material inside one of the holes for the horizontal bolts. This led to some delays until we could identify why the bolt wasn't going through the frame. 585609

it doesn't fit the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe that I own , it is a 2.4L, sport. The tongue is about four inches to short (under the rear Bumper) to use it I would have to buy an Extender. That is only one of the problems. When you inform E-Trailer they ignore your comments and do not publish them. Also ordered the 2017 Wire harness. the rear brakes do not come on when you use the brakes. This is the last time I will ever use this service. Followed all the instructions in both installation to the letter. I am a retired Missile technician and that is how we worked on our missiles so don't say "oh he has no experience on electro-mechanical devices" they just don't build them properly. 583694

This was installed on a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Easy install, did most of it solo but involved the wife just for the heck of it. It's been used to hold a bike rack, so it isn't getting stressed too much. 581970

After doing a ton of research on hitches and towing, I finally decided on the Curt 13152. We just installed it yesterday, but we haven’t towed anything yet. The install was a breeze! Also, having an install video on the website for every item is a definite plus. Everything the video described was the same in my case. I wasn’t comfortable “cutting away” the bumper alignment pins, but I was able to bend them up out of the way with pliers. All holes lined up perfectly, everything went well. All in all, it probably took about an hour to install laying on my back in the driveway, but I’m also a bit OCD so I was really taking my time. Great solid hitch, easy install, and a good looking addition to the Hyundai. 581921

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • 2018 Sante Fe Sport Trailer Hitch Fit Recommendation
  • The correct Curt Class III trailer hitch you'd need for a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is the part # C13152 whereas the # C13153 that you refernced fits the SE and Limited models. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # 118571 which is a confirmed fit. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0
  • I checked with Curt and was able to confirm that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13152 referenced in your question will indeed fit your 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0. This Class III trailer hitch is custom-fit for this vehicle and will use existing holes in the vehicle frame for a no-drill installation. I have attached the written instructions and an installation video on the 2017 Santa Fe Sport that you can use for reference. If you are looking to do any towing and your Santa...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe SE
  • I was able to confirm with Curt that the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch # C13195 that you referenced is indeed a fit for your 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe SE. At this time (August 2018) the hitch is only confirmed to work with the SE model, most likely because the hitch has simply not been tested yet with the other trim options. I have attached the installation instructions that you can use for reference. As of now there are only universal wiring harnesses available for your 2019 Santa Fe. The...

  • Most Hidden Trailer Hitch to Fit a 2014 Kia Sorento EX
  • Hidden Hitch is a brand of hitches that's owned by the same company that owns Draw-Tite. The Hidden Hitch line has actually been discontinued and in most cases there is a Draw-Tite hitch replacement that is exactly the same. There is a Draw-Tite hitch that fits your 2014 Kia Sorento EX, it's part # 75772, and although it isn't exactly like the etrailer.com hitch you looked at, part # E98841, they do install and fit in basically the same way. The etrailer.com hitch actually has an...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
  • I have attached a link to all of the trailer hitch options we offer for the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The hitch I recommend for your Santa Fe Sport is the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C13152 because it will offer you a 2 inch hitch receiver, is rated for higher towing capacities, and has a bit easier install than similar hitches. Keep in mind that your vehicle may be the limiting factor when it comes to towing capacities, but the # C13152 hitch is rated for 900 pounds...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with Factory Tow Package
  • Trailer hitch # C13152 is a popular option for your 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport so that is a great choice. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you. For the 4-Pole I recommend Tekonsha harness # 118269 because we hear about fewer problems with the Tekonsha brand. I have linked a video showing how it installs as well. For a 4- to 7-Way adapter there are some options. If you only need the 7-Way for trailer lights and not for electric brakes and 12 volt power as well...

  • Installation of Trailer Hitch Receiver on 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13152 is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. This hitch will install below the bumper of your vehicle so the cutout is not necessary for this fit. You will need to remove your spare tire temporarily for this installation. I've attached a video to assist. If you will be using this hitch for towing, I recommend using the Curt Wiring Harness # C56184. This harness plugs into your Hyundai Santa Fe's wiring harness, which is located...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Towing Trailer w 545 lb Tongue Weight
  • For your 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with a hitch rated for weight distribution like the Curt part # C13153 or # C13152 that it sounds like you have based on the capacities you listed, and for your trailer that has an unloaded tongue weight of 545 lbs the Strait Line System part # RP66083 would be a perfect solution. It has a tongue weight range of 400 to 800 lbs which would work well plus it has the only sway control on the market designed to fight sway before it starts. For a 2 inch ball...

  • Recommended 7-Way Wiring and Brake Controller for 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe
  • It's hard for me to say exactly how the 4-Way harness on your Hyundai Santa Fe is installed. The type of wiring you described in your question does not match up to how the wiring harnesses we have available for your Santa Fe will install, whether or not it has the factory tow package. If the Santa Fe does not have the factory tow package, the correct wiring harness will be the Curt T-Connector # C56184 or the Hopkins # HM11143984. Both harnesses will install by plugging into factory...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Other Parts to Tow a with a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
  • The Curt # C13152 and Draw-Tite # 75772 trailer hitch receivers that fit your 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport are both pretty much the same. They install in the same location and even have the same clearance. The weight capacity of the Curt is higher but in all reality they're both rated as high as your Santa Fe so the higher capacity doesn't really matter. The Draw-Tite does have a slightly better price tag so, if it were me, I'd go with it. For a wiring harness I recommend going with...

  • Will Spare Fit With Trailer Hitch Receiver Installed on a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0t Ultimate
  • Both the Draw-Tite # 75772 and Curt # C13152 trailer hitch receivers for your 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport require the spare tire to be temporarily removed for installation. Once installed the hitches fit with the spare tire. If you look at the videos I've attached the spare tire is put back in place and that is the 2017 Sport 2.0t Ultimate like yours. Between the two hitches I recommend the Curt because of the higher weight capacity. If you're going to be towing with your Hyundai...

  • Will the Curt Hitch C13152 Fit a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with AWD
  • Yes, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13152 is a fit for your 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with AWD. It is a direct fit that installs in pre-existing holes so no drilling or cutting is required. I have attached an install video for you on a Sport model and a photo of what it will look like once installed. If you can tell me what you will be using the hitch for I would be glad to offer some additional recommendations for you.

  • Do the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport Use the Same Hitches and Wiring
  • The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport use different trailer hitches. If you do NOT have a Sport model then you can use Curt trailer hitch # C13153. The Sport models use # C13152. For the wiring the Sport and regular Santa Fe will use the same harnesses but which harness depends on if the vehicle has the factory tow package or not. The dealer should be able to tell you how the vehicle is equipped by looking up the VIN. If it does have the factory tow package then it is prewired...
