Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Ford Flex - Curt

Today on our 2014 Ford Flex, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Curt Custom Class 3 trailer hitch receiver. Offering the inch and a quarter but the inch and a quarter opening. It's part number is C13110. Here's a look at the hitch installed on the Flex. You'll see where going to have a short piece of the cross tube that'll be visible here on the drivers side. Little bit longer piece here on the passengers side, it's not a symmetrical hitch but it does serve the purpose very well. Comes up, it' uses existing weld nuts to go into place.

Not a lot of effort in getting it put on. Once we get here to the middle, we've got our receiver tube opening. This is a class 3, it's 2inch by 2inch receiver tube opening and a nice reinforcement collar around the end of it there. This is going to handle a ton of accessories. There's a lot of things out there that are class 3 type of accessories that you could put in here. It offers a ground clearance.

It's kind of in the low to middle spectrum of where hitches typically sit in relation to the ground. What I would recommend if you're going to use a cargo carrier or maybe a platform style bike rack, you might want to use something that has a raised shank, that way it will promote a little bit more ground clearance there at the rear. Or a hanging style bike rack would be a really great option as well. We've got our safety chain connection points down here so that if you do plan on hauling small trailers or something like that, you shouldn't have any issues getting those chains connected. You can see it's nice and open. Then you'll see our 5/8 diameter pin hole here in the receiver tube. That's what we'll use to secure all of our items with.

We want to be sure we chose class 3 accessories, but there should be plenty of room on each side for any type that you want to use. Whether it's just the hitch pin and clip, maybe a locking hitch pin or maybe even an anti-rattle device. When it comes to towing and hauling, we've got really good ratings on the hitch, they offer a 400lb tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force that we can put here at the receiver tube opening. It gives us a 4,000lb gross trailer weigh rating. That's the total weigh of our trailer and anything that we load up on it.

It is rated for weigh distribution, but those ratings are going to stay the same. You may want to check your owners manual on the Flex. We need to see what it's tow ratings are, and we'll go off of whichever of those are the lowest. A couple of measurements that are helpful when selecting your ball mounts, bike racks, or hitch cargo carriers. We'll be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening. We're going to have about 13 and 3 quarters of an inch. Then from the center of the hitch pin holes to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 3 and a half. Now to begin our installation we need to get our exhaust lowered down. You'll see we've got a dual exhaust setup on this one. Some of them are going to be single, but regardless what we want to do is use a support strap underneath, go from one side to the other. This is going to give us an area for our exhaust to come down and rest on. Then we can adjust how far down we want it to go. Prevent any damage to any of the other hangers or anything like that. Now we have 3 hangers that we're going to remove. There is going to be one on each side, right above the tail pipe, and then if we come forward, whether it's a single or a dual exhaust. It's going to be one right here at this cross member. We like to use some spray lubricant and then a big screwdriver or a pry bar should get the job done for ya. All right that should be good, let's see if we can kind of rotate it to get the room we need. Now we're going to take down the hanger portion itself. Got our isolators separated, now we want to remove the two large bolts on one side or each side depending on your exhaust set up. Now we'll want to save those brackets for re-installation later. Now, I'll do the same thing here on our drivers side. Now with an extra set of hands we're going to get our hitch lifted up and into position, as we do this we need to re-install the exhaust hanger brackets that we removed. These are going to be sandwiched between the conical tooth washers, which should face upwards towards our hitch, and the hitch bracket itself. Once we have 3 or 4 good turns on that, we can just let it rest there while we get our other side going. We just let our hitch rest there while we get our other 2 sets of hardware in it's forward hole location. Now we can take just a quick look. Want to make sure we've got our hitch centered with the vehicle and we can snug down our hardware. Now we'll grab our torque wrench, and we want to torque all 4 of our fasteners down to the specifications that they have listen in our instructions. Now for our passenger side exhaust hanger here, it can be a bit tricky to get it up in position. What I'm going to do is pull it off of the exhaust, again spray lubricants going to help us out here. I'm going to slid it up on the hanger attached to the vehicle. Where it'll come down. That should make it a little bit easier for us to get this slid in. Then we can work over and get this one on the other side here taken care of, and also the one there in the middle. All right now we just pull down our strap here and our hitch is going to be ready for use. With our exhaust back in place that is going to complete our installation of the Curt Custom Class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number C13110 on our 2014 Ford Flex.

Fit perfectly Suggest a can of dry lubricant to help remove the rubber hangers for the exhaust system. Can be done with the car on the ground. It was easier when one side was lifted with a jack. Put a block under the tire for saftey. Nice doing business with this company 346619

The hitch itself was easy to install on my model flex. Four bolts and three muffler hangers removed and re-installed, took about 20 minutes. The reason I did not give 5 stars is the packaging is sub-par. I ordered the wrong hitch to begin with and both boxes arrived with holes busted in the sides, the hitch was loose inside and one box had lost half of staples holding it shut. I was surprised that the wire harness I ordered didn't fall out. 413845

Product was perfectly designed to be easy to install, robust, and as elegant as a hitch design can be. Even the instructions were easy to follow along with. The trickiest part is removing the rubber isolators for the mufflers from the hangers. You need to remove them to gain excess for a torque wrench to ensure you don't over-tighten the mounting bolts in the weldnuts on the chassis. Etrailer.com even caught an error in my order, corrected it, and confirmed that their catch was indeed in error. Thank you Curt and etrailer! 253827

Very good quality product, Curt hitch for a dual exhaust Ford Flex, and super speedy filling the order and delivery. Bonus, shipping was FREE for the trailer hitch! I saved a ton of money, less than half the price of uhaul and Sears, although I needed to install it myself (it was an easy install.) I definitely recommend this business, my friend who had a great experience referred me and I will do the same because I am so pleased, thanks! -. 271175

Hitch fit perfectly. Quality and good looking once under Flex. Takes a little longer when you install it laying on your back on garage floor but easy enough for any one with a little experience can do. Held it up with two jack stands and went in pretty easy. Have used Curt products before and always happy with them. etrailer is always the place to go for any item needed. Thanks.... 530150

We originally ordered the wrong hitch (needed dual exhaust and we ordered for single). When it arrived we realized we had to drill into the car and were bummed because we didn't have the necessary drill bit. We ordered the correct one and this one did not require any drilling. Directions were easy to understand and installation was simple. My husband did it himself with just someone to help him hold it up! We had a few choices and am glad we paid a little more for one that required no drilling was drilling! Definitely recommend this one 410025

Good looking Hitch. 39 pounds. Delivery good - showed up before scheduled. Installation tips: 1 You absolutely must drop dual exhaust (I use WD40 and Hand Clamps to push Rubber Exhaust Hangers apart) 2 Lift "big paddle end" of hitch into place first. 3 This is a two person job. Person one-to lift Hitch into place. Person two-thread bolts into uni-body of Flex (thanks to my beautiful wife). 183252

  • Recommended Curt Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ford Flex with Dual Exhaust
The Curt trailer hitch receiver confirmed to fit your 2018 Ford Flex with dual exhaust is part # C13110. It is a fit for 2009 - 2018 Ford Flex with Dual Exhaust. For your trailer wiring, you may want to consider the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118472. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your Ford Flex's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2018 Ford Flex
From what I found your 2018 Ford Flex could have a maximum towing capacity up to 4,500 pounds if equipped properly. I recommend checking your owner's manual or with Ford's towing guide and match up the features of your Flex to find it's towing capacity. I recommend the Curt hitch, part # C13110, for your 2018 Ford Flex because it's tucked under the bumper about 3/4 of an inch more than the Draw-Tite hitch. Although they're both pretty visible. For the wiring start with the 4-way...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2018 Ford Flex
For your 2018 Ford Flex the hitch I recommend is the USA made Curt hitch part # C13110. This hitch has great towing capacities at 4,000 lb trailer weight and 400 lb tongue weight, is easy to install, and has a 2 inch opening which is the most popular hitch size. For trailer wiring you'd then want the Tekonsha kit # 118472 which installs easily without requiring any splicing. See install video I attached for this and the Curt hitch. Since you plan on doing some towing you might be...

Thank you for your recent purchase of Curt Class III hitch # C13110. The two exhaust hanger bracket bolts shown in the linked video at the 2:04-minute mark certainly may be stubborn after 5 years in place. Check out the installation instructions I attached for this hitch to see how it installs. For trailer wiring you would want a Tow Ready Wiring Harness # 118472. • Do I Have To Drill Into the Body To Ground the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for a 2015 Ford Flex

Therefore, when installing T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118472 on your 2015 Ford Flex which is what I recommend you use, the ground will need to be attached elsewhere on the body to a bare metal surface.
