Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2008 Scion XB - Curt

Today we are going to install part number 12490 from Curt. And we are going to install this hitch on a 2008 Scion XB. First we will show you how this hitch installs on the vehicle. It is going to install on these three holes that are existing in the frame right now, and they are threaded. On some older vehicles, you may have to clean those out with a wire brush and some high lubricant - or, in worst-case scenario, a thread tap. Also what we are going to have to do is take down our exhaust. Spray down this hanger here with some lubricant and then slide it off. And you can tell we have already did spray a little bit of that. That will lower the muffler out of our way so we can get our work done. And then on the drivers side, this tie-down bracket will have to come off and stay off. And the hitch will go back into its place. What you want to do next is go ahead and check the holes. Run a a bolt in there. Make sure they thread in there okay. Like I said, if it is dirty, you may have to take a few steps and clean them out. And once you get everything started and, you know, make sure it looks good and clean, then you can go ahead and install your hitch at this point.

Next we can go ahead and install our hitch. And it is kind of a wide hitch, so it might be a good idea to have an extra set of hands installing it. All right, we are going to just get one started one on each side, just get it going. All right, when you are on the other side, you have to sneak it by this part of the plastic balance here. Once you do that, then the hitch will slide in position. Okay, with the hitch secured, there are about two bolts and then you can go ahead and install the rest of it. Now we installed these bolts loosely so we can still maneuver the hitch left and right and center it on the frame. Once you have it centered the way you want it, then go ahead and snug down the bolts. At this point, we can go ahead and torque down our bolts, at the torque specified in the instructions. All right, we will go ahead and put our exhaust back together. And that covers it for part number 12490 from Curt on our 2008 Scion XB.

Like the other reviews say, it's great, so I don't need to add more than that about how I like the product. I will add some information about the issues I ran into installing it. I have a 2009 xB with 77,000 Minnesota miles on it so the bolt holes were rusty. The two bolts that were removed from the tow hook were just fine but the other 4 were rusted enough that I could not get the bolts in. If you have the same situation you just need a 12-1.25 metric tap and a tap wrench for it. A regular wrench will put weird pressure on it and you may end up re-threading it, which will not be good. What I did was to use a 1/2" plumbing wire brush to first scrub out as much rust as possible. Then I squirted some WD-40 in the holes to clean them out some more. Once I wiped them out I applied some cutting oil to the tap, not that you need it but I had it, and carefully re-tapped the hole. The problem I ran into is that the muffler gets in the way of the tap on one hole so I had to push it off the hanger, which can be difficult. The method I ended up using in order to get it off the car side of the hanger was to use three 16p nails as ramps. I slid a nail in three points of a triangle under the rubber hanger so they were over the nub that holds it on. I then sprayed some WD-40 between the rubber hanger and the nails and then pushed on the hanger from the back side, from under the car, and then it popped off. Once all of the welded nuts were cleaned out it was a breeze to install by myself. Just hold it up enough to loosely thread in a couple of bolts and then you can loosely put in the rest. Once they are finger tight you can torque them and you are done. I didn’t bother with a wiring harness since it is only for a bike rack. 436827

Fast shipping and Easy Directions for Install. However the holes did not align properly so with a hammer and a tool to pry the flanges out the holes aligned the final bolt went in. Thanks for a great product at a good price. 579394

Relatively easy install on the Scion xB. You'll likely only run into one issue. The threaded bosses or weld nuts in the xB's frame rails are often rusted somewhat internally, making it tough to get the bolts started. If you're installing on an xB, the newest xB on the road is a MY 2015, so there have been three years of exposure on those threads, minimum. You'll want to go to your local hardware store and get some rust remover or naval jelly. Get a small metal bristle brush. Wet the brush in the rust remover and work it around and in and out of the threaded holes in the Scion frame. Let it sit for a few minutes. I actually attached a small bottle brush to a drill and used that to clean out the threads. Doing it dry isn't good enough, you need some rust remover liquid on the brush. After that, you should be able to get the bolts threaded in. The product itself is outstanding. The thing that makes the job a bit more challenging is Toyota's use of weld nuts or threaded bosses in the frame. Most cars, you just use a Curt -supplied nut on the inside of the frame. The use of factory threaded inserts means that said inserts are usually corroded on a used car, and the threads have to be cleaned prior to install. Becomes a challenge if the car is not brand new. You could also use a tap to clean the threads rather than the method I suggested. You'll need the bolt size and thread pitch. Your hardware store will likely stock the correct tap. Chase the threads with that prior to install, to clean them up. I used the rust remover / metal brush / drill method on two Scions with success, but your mileage may vary. 562115

Bolt on Curt Tow Receiver for 2015 Scion XB was just that, quick and easy bolt up, high quality Curt Receiver all bolts included clear instruction detail with drawings. Easy install was done in 30 minutes. Will update on wiring install time later. Again a quality product, quick online payment, quick delivery. Very Satisfied my second time ordering nothing changed since first time ordering same good service. I like that etrailer has deep product line coverage that is current and stock necessary wiring to finish job completely. 555832

It is installed! 30 minutes to install? No. It took 4 hours on our 2009 Scion xB. The car frame screw holes were plenty rusted, so it took a while before I got all 6 holes to take a screw all the way in. Next issue was the holes didn’t line up. The hitch frame had been very slightly bowed in shipping enough to be about 3/4” away from getting a screw in. (It just so happened to be the one by the muffler). I was able to use enough force to correct the alignment. (Mallet, body, etc.) I didn’t damage it, I just convinced it a little. I’m a realist. I knew it was going to take hours before I started. Oh yeah, and 86 lb ft on each screw. Done. That hitch ain’t goin’ anywhere except with the car! Thanks for quick shipping! It was my wife’s birthday present and was installed on time. Looks great and will be used with strap for bike carrier. 516764

It fit like a glove! Lined right up and came with the hardware need to install it. Fit and finish was great as well. I've had good luck with Curt products in the past and they didn't disappoint this time either and etrailer had a good price on it and good information about installation which is why I keep coming back. 503894

This whole outfit was very nice. The hitch fit very nicely and I had it installed in less than 15min (including loosening exhaust and working on the car at road height. No jack required) The only problem I have with it and it's minor, the hitch pin is drilled 90 degrees off. You cannot put the hairpin in to secure it drilled the way it is. This is my first purchase from etrailer and I was very pleased with the with the website and the product I bought from them. 501581

Still holding up. Trailer-ed around mtb rack, cargo rack and medium sided box trailer for dump runs and such. Yeah and the trailer adapter is of GOOD quality NO micky/mouse connection. Really is plug in play with a little know how. Ive stayed within the load capacity and havent had any issues. Installed on a 2012 Scion XB with 80k.

Still holding up. Ive trailer-ed various racks like 3 mtb racks , cargo mesh bottom racks and med. duty box trailers for dump runs with ease. Trailer adapter was installed at the same time which has really made brake/tail light indication helpful for a year so far. Quality product highly recommended. Ive stalled within the load capacity ratings and havent had any issues.

I installed this myself with an assist from the wife. Trouble spots for me were removing the tow hook. The bolts were hard to get out. Had to use a leverage bar over the end of my ratchet. Next getting the exhaust hanger out of the rubber grommet was frustrating. Definitely tougher than in the install video. I didn’t have a tool like the one used and struggled mightily. I would recommend getting the wire brush thing for the bolt holes. I sprayed heavily with WD40. Seemed to help. My biggest gripe is that the bolts that came with the hitch took many, many turns to catch and start threading on. The hitch is quite heavy so a second set of hands or some sort of homemade devise to hold it up while you try to get the first 2 bolts started would be helpful. 494151

The hitch arrived with cosmetic damage—scuff marks and slight nicks in the enamel paint. Probably due to sitting in a warehouse for years! I could paint it but I’m not sure it’s worth the effort. What do you expect for such a low price? This is a product review, however, and it fits my 2008 Scion Xb securely with a subtle profile. Installation was very straightforward. The hardware screwed easily into the frame with three bolts on each side. Exceeds expectations. 462268

Overall everything has worked as it should. My only complaint would be that I have pretty much always had some wobble/looseness of the drawbar in the receiver. It is actually audible when driving. I was in the process of buying, and selling a house when I installed the trailer hitch, so the issue was overlooked due to the complexity of the move. I guess I learned to live with it, and hope it doesn't ever cause a failure. 428667

I have a 2009 Scion XB with TRD exhaust. I didn't have any clearance issues around the muffler. The hitch is a high quality part. Without the bike rack in the receiver the hitch is almost invisible. I'm very happy with this Curt hitch as well as the service from the guys at etrailer. Next project will be to install the lighting/wiring kit also sold by etrailer. 414242

Good, Sturdy hitch, with appropriate hardware. Installed this on my 2008 Scion XB. I live in WI, and my female threads on the vehicle frame were quite rusty. Clearing out the threads turned out to be quite a bit more work that just spraying some PB Blaster and waiting for some magic to happen. Ended up having to grind out a groove in one of the old bolts in order to persuade some of the rust out of the threads. Once the threads were clean, installation was a breeze and everything aligned quickly & easily. Quite a heavy hitch, so you'll probably need an extra set of hands. 375914

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for 2013 Scion xB
  • For a trailer hitch confirmed as a fit for your 2013 Scion xB we have the Curt part # C12490 which would fit and work well. It has the highest capacities of all of the trailer hitches we offer for your vehicle so it's a great option. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the Curt harness part # C56035 which I attached an install video for as well. For a ball mount you'd then want the part # C45521, for a hitch ball...

A Class II hitch usually has a tongue weight rating of 350 pounds and a towing rating of 3,500 pounds. Among the carriers confirmed to fit your car is the Thule Passage 2 that you referenced, part # TH910XT. This lightweight carrier features Thule's patented FitDial adjustment system to ensure a good fit and simple installation on your car. If you only need to transport 2 bikes of average weight then a trunk mount carrier...

  • Curt T-1 Connector Part # 56062 as Least Costly Option for Trailer Connector on 2009 Scion xB
  • Your 2009 xB requires a powered system, which means that the tail light converter gains its signals from the vehicle tail light circuits, but receives power for the trailer lamps directly from the vehicle battery. The tail light circuits on that vehicle are not rated to handle the additional load of the trailer lights. The T-1 connector part # 56062 is your most economical option.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2009 Scion xB
  • When there is an option always go for the highest Class hitch for any given vehicle. A higher class hitch will allow you more options for accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers in addition to greater towing capacity. For a 2009 Scion xB we have Class II trailer hitch # 12490. The towing capacity of the hitch is 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. I have included a link to the instructions and a video for you. The towing capacity of a vehicle can change...

  • Options for Power Chair Transport on 2013 Scion xB
  • Most hitch carriers for power chairs are made for higher-capacity 2-inch hitches, not for the light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I and Class II types made for the 2013 Scion xB. Power chairs vary quite a bit in their weight, some being as light as 54-lbs (the Lexis Light), while others can weigh upwards of 250-lbs, such as the 4-wheeled Prowler 3410 MG. All ramped-equipped hitch carriers suitable for power chairs, such as the MaxxTow 30x50 Wheelchair Carrier # MT70260 and the others shown on...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Cargo Cargo Carrier For 2014 Scion xB
  • It sure looks like you have been doing your homework. The Curt trailer hitch, part # C12490 is the hitch designed to fit your 2014 Scion xB. This is a Class l trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. And the note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. This is a simple no-drill installation...

  • Tongue Weight of Draw-Tite 24815 for 2008 Scion xB
  • Tongue weight is roughly 10% of hitch capacity. The capacity of this Draw-Tite Class I is 2,000 lbs, making the tongue weight 200 lbs. We have a hitch with a higher capacity for your vehicle. The Curt Class II receiver hitch (part 12490) has 3,500-lb capacity, giving it a 350-lb tongue weight. Since the Scion sits very low to the ground, I would highly recommend a cargo carrier with a rise. You might try the 20x48 Cargo Carrier by Tow Ready (part 63155), which has a 3 inch rise. This...

  • Will a Trailer Hitch for a 2005 Scion xB fit a 2008 Scion xB
  • The hitches that are built to fit a 2005 Scion xB will not fit a 2008 Scion xB. The 2007 xB brought a new body that included some frame changes which is why the hitches for the 2004-2006 models will not fit the newer models. For your 2008 Scion xB you can use one of three hitches: Curt part # 12490 or Draw-Tite part # 24815. I have added links to these hitches below as well as to a video of the Curt hitch being installed on a 2008 xB and the instructions for the Draw-Tite part.

  • Recommended Hitch for Carrying Up to 4 Bikes and Light Duty Towing for 2012 Scion xB
  • A Class I and Class II hitch is offered for your xB. I'd avoid the Class I, as it would limit you to carrying only two bikes due to its limited weight capacity. The Curt Class II hitch, part # C12490 would allow you to carry up to 4 bikes. Curt's warranty requires that a # 18050 support strap be used by all non-trailer loads like a bike rack. I'll link you to a video showing how the strap is used. For a bike rack that would allow you to carry up to 4 bikes, I'd recommend the Thule...

  • Recommended 1-1/4-Inch Trailer Hitch for 2008 Scion xB
  • We do not maintain relationships with local installers for the hitches we sell but our hitch vendors, such as Draw-Tite and Curt, do provide a dealer-locator service on their websites. Many of our customers tackle the install on their own since we include hardware, instructions as well as videos to help. The hitch I recommend for your 2008 Scion xB is the light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class II model from Curt, part # C12490. This offer a higher weight capacity than the same-size Class I hitch...

  • Hitch Receiver and Bike Rack Options to Carry a Pedego Interceptor E-Bike on a 2008 Scion xB
  • I do have a few different bike rack options for you, but since you are wanting to carry a pretty hefty E-Bike and the highest rated trailer hitch receiver (the Curt # C12490) is only a 1-1/4 inch receiver you do have a very limited range of choices. Even though the Curt receiver that I recommend, part # C12490, has a max Tongue Weight (TW) of 350 lbs you will want to check that against what the owner's manual says for your 2008 Scion xB and go with whichever weight capacity is lower....

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2011 Scion xB
  • As long as your 2011 Scion xB is not a Release model, you can use the Curt trailer hitch # 12490. This is a Class II trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. The bike rack you choose will need to fit in the 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video showing a typical installation of the trailer hitch for you. While there are some bike racks that fit on a ball mount, most bike racks actually fit in the receiver opening....

  • How to Determine Gross Trailer Weight and Tongue Weight Towing with a 2009 Scion xB
  • The first thing you are going to want to do is consult the owners manual for your 2009 Scion xB to determine its capacities. They are likely not the same as the hitch. Whichever is lower, the hitch or the vehicle, is the rating you need to go by. To determine the gross trailer weight you will need to look at the sticker or plate on the trailer tongue. It should list a dry weight and a gross trailer weight. The gross trailer weight is the most that trailer can weigh including itself and...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2011 Scion xB
  • The trailer hitch that I recommend using for your 2011 Scion xB is the Curt # C12490. This is a Class II trailer hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver. It has a 350 lb tongue weight rating and a 3,500 lb gross trailer weight rating. But your vehicle may not be rated for this much. You will need to confirm the weight rating of your Scion in your owner's manual. You will also need wiring, like the recommended T-Connector # C56035, and a ball mount kit like part # C45147. Check out the linked ball...

  • Can a Hitch Extender be Used With a Curt Hitch Receiver to Carry 2 Bikes on a 2013 Scion xB
  • Using an the Extension # HES6 in the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12490 on your 2013 Scion xB will reduce the hitch receiver weight capacity by 50%. Since this means the Tongue Weight (TW) will be lowered to 175 lbs, the total weight of your bikes and bike rack being 100 lbs will not be an issue. You will want to make sure to check any weight capacities in your owner's manual as well. Keep in mind that for this Curt hitch all non-trailer loads (like bike racks and cargo carriers) but...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2012 Scion xB
  • I can certainly help you choose a trailer hitch and bike rack for your 2012 Scion xB. Many people choose to keep their bike racks installed on their trailer hitch all the time. What we recommend, and what is recommended by most manufacturers such as Thule, to remove the bike rack when not in use so it is not exposed to the elements more than is necessary. Keeping the rack protected from rain, dirt, debris, and the sun will help extend the life of your bike rack. Removing the rack when not...

  • Hitch Mount Hanging Rhino-Rack Bike Rack on a 2015 Scion xB
  • I may have a solution for you but Rhino-Rack does not have a 3-bike hanging hitch mount bike rack. Since you're going to be carrying three bikes you'll need the Class II Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12490. It's confirmed to fit your 2015 Scion xB and a Class I hitch cannot carry more than two bikes. With the Curt hitch you will also need the support strap # 18050. It's required by Curt when using the hitch for any non-trailer loads like a bike rack. For a 3-bike rack I recommend...

  • Availability of 4 Bike Hitch Bike Rack for a 2009 Scion xB
  • I have three hitches available for a 2009 Scion xB and they are all 1-1/4 inch size hitches. Two of the hitches are Class I 1-1/4 inch hitches that can only carry a maximum of two bikes. The CURT Class II 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 12490, is a Class II hitch which can carry 4 bikes, but since the CURT hitch is a 1-1/4 inch hitch and the Tow Ready 4 Bike Hitch Rack, part # 63124, you have referenced is for a 2 inch hitch, it will not fit on your Scion xB. If you use the CURT # 12490 hitch...

  • Recommended 2-Bike Class I Hitch Racks for 2014 Scion xB
  • One of my favorite 2-bike hitch racks for a Class I hitch like your Curt # C12490 is the Let's Go Aero BikeWing 2-Bike Rack # B01311. I like this wheel-mount style rack for several reasons: it is moderately priced, it is lightweight - only 12-lbs, it has an 80-lbs total bike weight rating and it provides a generous 12-inches of clearance from it's hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the carrier. As a wheel-mount rack, it avoids stress on the bikes' frames since they make no contact with...

This hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and should work very well for you. I attached an install video for you to check out also.
