Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2003 Pontiac Vibe - Curt

Today on our 2003 Pontiac Vibe, we'll be installing the Curt, 1 and a quarter inch receiver tube hitch, part number C12221. This is what our hitch will look like once installed. Next well go ahead and give you a couple measurements, to assist to selecting accessories for your new hitch. Such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. From of the hitch pin hole, to the outermost edge of the bumper, is 4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground, is 10 and a half inches. Now go ahead with the installation. Now to begin our install, we'll first go ahead and point out the attachment points.

We'll have a total of 4 attachment points, 2 on each side. These attachment points are weld nuts built into the frame by the manufacturer. Over time, the threads of the weld nuts will build up with rust, dust, dirt and debris, so we'll need to make sure we thoroughly clean them out before we attempt to install the new hardware. Using a sprite lubricant, and a half inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092, we'll thoroughly clean the threads out. To make sure they're cleaned out, we'll go ahead and take one of the new fasteners, thread it into the weld nut to make sure itll go nice and easily.

Once we have all the weld nuts cleaned out, we're now ready to install the hitch. Go ahead and take the driver side and feed up over the exhaust tailpipe first, and then the passenger side up tight to the frame. We'll take the new 12 millimeter bolt, and half inch copper tooth washer, teeth of the washer facing the hitch, and thread it into the weld nut. Once we thread in all 4 fasteners, we can go ahead and tighten them down, and then torque to specifications, as indicated in instructions. Now with our hitch secured, and torque specification, we're ready to hit the road. And that does it for our install of the Curt hitch, part number C12221, on our 2003 Pontiac Vibe. .

It arrived before the promised date which gave me more time to install. Perfect fit to my 2013 Matrix. Easy to install but beware about having to clean out the holes in your vehicle to get the bolts in. I ended up needing to rethread the holes. But the Curtis hitch is worth every penny and I would buy it again. etrailer was easy to work with and in my experience is trustworthy. 682954

Excellent hitch and components. Fitting was perfect on my 09' vibe GT, no modification needed. The only item I purchased separate after reciving the hitch was a fine thread metric tap to clean the threads, otherwise the bolts would not ratchet in properly. Completely satisfied with my purchase and the hitch looks very nice. 71438

Hitch installed as easy as could be possible: Hold in position, install 4 bolts It does hang down below the bumper more than I expected, though. 265714

Received product it was obviously well built to haul nearly any trailer, appeared to be quality welded and painted. Instructions were easy to follow, heads up about the rusted threads on older vehicles was accurate. Install time was longer than 30 min due to the threads on the vehicle. I first saturated threads with WD40 3 times over 2 days. Brushed out threads each time and tried to thread in the bolt after each application. Since threads resisted, I re-thread the welded nuts and that worked. Install further required strapping back the muffler a bit as was noted in the instructions for the Pontiac Vibe. actual bolt up time around 10 to 15 minutes , everything lined up perfectly. How often does that happen ? Overall I am very pleased. 515595

Excellent! Installed entire kit in under an hour. Hardest part was the bolt holes on the undercarriage. They were rusty and needed to be retapped. The electrical was a breeze. Great product. Hitch blends in well with car, 5 stars! 577297

On 06/14/2012 I posted my comment about the wonderful product I purchased from www.etrailer.com. I stated I would add pictures later… It is now later. My pictures will show how I had to move things before I purchased my Hitch from www.etrailer.com and modified a store bought trailer. The third picture shows the trailer attached to my www.etrailer.com hitch after the assembly of the trailer… The forth picture shows the trailer attached to my www.etrailer.com hitch after doing the trailer wiring and checked out the lights… (All went well) The fifth picture shows my www.etrailer.com hitch and trailed now at home in Florida… 1,100 miles from Delaware to my home in Florida…. 18 ½ hours on the road… (All went well) I love how easy my www.etrailer.com hitch and wiring went together… Thank you again www.etrailer.com 48771

Received hitch earlier than expected & all looked new & undamaged, however the bolts attaching the hitch did not fit. I cleaned the existing nuts in the frame with WD40, a tooth brush & Qtips but the bolt gets very tight quickly & feels like the threading is wrong & tightening feels that it is damaging the nut. So I called & gave them all the information on the bolts they sent & told them the problem I was experiencing. They elected to send me a new set of bolts which are the same as the originals so I haven't been able to install the hitch. At first it looked like this was going to be an easy job but because of the bolts nothing has been accomplished. I'm not sure what to do! Buy a tap to tap nuts to fit bolts or try to find & buy the right size bolts for the existing frame nuts. What do you suggest??? 551694

Comments
Due to the age of your vehicle, and the fact that you live in an area that experiences winter weather, the nuts that are welded into the frame members that are used to mount the hitch are very likely corroded which is preventing you from fully threading in the installation hardware. In many cases, a good shot of spray lubricant like WD-40 or PB Blaster and some scrubbing with a wire brush from a battery terminal cleaner # DW00254
Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner - Wire Brush
$2.94
will clean the threads well enough that the bolts can be threaded into place. In some cases, when the corrosion is severe, a M12 x 1.25 thread tap is needed. We offer a reasonably priced tap as # PTW8662
12 mm x 1.25 Tap and Drill Bit
$7.08
. You can see the thread tap and wire brush by using the provided links.

The trailer hitch receiver for our 2010 Toyota Matrix was a perfect fit! The online instructional videos made it a breeze to install. I was able to mount it without an extra set of hands (although the exhaust pipe was conveniently placed to serve as a temp hanger on the passenger side...:) Delivery came sooner than expected and the bike rack we bought it for also fit perfectly. Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • Comparing Trailer Hitches # 12221 and # C12013 for a 2007 Toyota Matrix
I went out to the warehouse and examined the Curt Hitch # 12221 and # C12013. While they are similar, there is a key difference in the designs. From the top of the mounting brackets on each side of the hitch down to the bottom of the receiver, hitch # C12013, hangs lower. This makes sense because it is designed to fit all models including XR and XRS of the 2003 to 2008 Toyota Matrix. Some models have a rear fascia that hangs lower so a hitch that hangs lower is needed. Since you...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2009 Toyota Matrix
First, where the car was built is not as important as what market the car was built for. If it was built for the U.S. market, it does not matter if it was made in Canada, Mexico, or Japan. You have probably noticed that many cars for any given year come out about a year early, so it is not unusual to see a model year 2009 car with a build date of 2008. A Class II hitch is going to be the better option and out of the 2 Class II hitches, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch # 12228 because...

  • Availability of a 2 Trailer Hitch for a 2004 Toyota Matrix to Carry a Bike Rack
You are definitely on the right track when it comes to not wanting to use an adapter for your bike rack. The only trailer hitches that are a confirmed fit for your 2004 Toyota Matrix have 1-1/4" receivers but if you let me know what bike rack you have I can check to see if there is an adapter that was made specifically for your bike rack (provided that we carry your bike rack). For your application I recommend installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12221. This trailer hitch requires...

Yes, you are correct the differences are that on # C12221 the heat shield modification may be required, and lower fascia may need to be trimmed for hitch installation. On the # C12013 a heat shield modification may be required. It does not need a fascia modification, which presents an easier install on the 2007 Toyota Matrix. Also the # C12013 fits the 2003 - 2008 Toyota Matrix XR and XRS. The # C12221 fits Canadian models of the Matrix FROM 2009 - 2013 (Toyota Matrix,) and 2003...

You'll notice all three options, parts # 24812, # C12221 and # C12013, share a very similar overall design; this is due to all of them using the same mounting points on the car's frame. This means that there will not be much if any difference between the installations. Ground clearance will not be markedly better or worse with any hitch. If...

Curt trailer hitch # C12221 would be a good option as long as your 2005 Toyota Matrix is not an XR or XRS model. If it is an XR or XRS model then # C12013 would be the best option for a Curt hitch. These are both Class II hitches which means you have to use the ball mount recommended by the hitch manufacture so as not to void the hitch warranty. This will limit the amount of rise you can get to be able to tow the trailer level. Based on the picture you have sent you will need a good...

The trunk mount route will be more cost-effective, but the hitch-mount option gives you the ability to use both a hitch-mount bike rack and other hitch-mount accessories such as a cargo carrier. Your Pontiac Vibe GT can be equipped with either a Class I or Class II type 1-1/4-inch hitch. Since you want to use your Kuat NV 2-inch hitch bike rack # NV22G you will want to use the higher-capacity Class II hitch # C12221 from Curt. You will also need a hitch adapter to allow the 2-inch Kuat rack to be installed in the 1-1/4-inch hitch. You can use MaxxTow adapter # MT70355. This will fit into the class II hitch and provide a 2-inch receiver opening for the Kuat rack. This adapter...

In order to help deter theft, I recommend adding...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2006 Toyota Matrix
There are Class I and II trailer hitches available for your 2006 Toyota Matrix. With a Class I hitch you are limited to just 2 bikes. With a Class II you can carry up to 4 safely. The Class II hitches available, # C12013 for XR and XRS models and # C12221 for all other models, also require the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, for the Curt warranty requirements. Still this is the best way to go if you want to carry more than 2 bikes. Platform style racks are great because they...
