Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Nissan Rogue - Curt

Today on our 2016 Nissan Rogue, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt Custom Fit Class 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver, offering the 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" opening. This part number is C12122. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, we're going to have a hidden cross tube, so we don't have a big, wide hitch here in the back of the vehicle. All we're really adding visually is going to be the receiver tube opening itself and our safety chain connection points. Overall, not changing the look of the vehicle too much. We've got safety chain connection points here, these are made out of a rolled style steel. Plenty of room in there for making our connections.

You can see our half inch diameter pinhole there. That's what we'll use to secure our cargo carriers, bike racks, ball mounts, whatever we decide on. It looks like we'll have enough room on either side here, so we can use a pin and a clip, anti rattle device, locking hitch pin, whatever you decide on there. You can see the reinforcement collar around the end has that nice flush look. I prefer that one over the others, but it's just a personal thing there. You can see it's going to be tucked inside the edge of our bumper, so we're not going to have to worry about bumping our legs on it or anything like that as we're walking around. The hitch is going to give us a 350 pound tongue weight capacity.

That's going to be the maximum downward force we can put here at our receiver tube opening. It also is going to offer us a 3500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's the total weight of our trailer and anything that we load up on it. Of course, we will look at the the Rogue's owner's manual as well, see what it's rated for, and then we'll go off of whichever of those numbers are the lowest. There are a couple measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting our ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier. We'll be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening.

We've got about 13 1/2". Then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 4 1/4". If your vehicle is equipped with the appearance panels right in this back corner on each side, we'll need to take those down. We've got three push pin fasteners. Just pull the center out of those and then the rest of it will come with it. Right up here in the front, we're going to have ...

It's a push pin fastener, but it's got a threaded insert in it, so you just use a Phillips screwdriver and back that out. We'll just pull it down, then we can set it aside. We've got the same amount of fasteners on our driver's side. The panel's just going to look a little bit different to accommodate for the exhaust. Now we're going to support our exhaust from the underside here. We're just going to use a cam buckle strap. You can use a piece of wire or whatever you have around the house there, just want to give it some support while we undo the hangers. When we take these off, we just want to hit them with a little bit of spray lubricant. Typically, we can just pull this like that and slide them off. If they don't come off easily, you might have to grab a prybar and pry on them, but they'll pop off. We'll have one hanger one each side that we want to remove. Just ahead of the tailpipe, there'll be one more. Now we can just let a little bit of slack out there, that'll give us great access to our connection points. On our passenger's side, if we've got this little bracket here, we want to pull that out, as well. We can return that to our customer or set it aside in case we ever take our hitch off. The two holes that those bolts just came out of, here and here, that's going to be our passenger side attachment points. The two holes that we're above them, they're not required, it doesn't say so in the instructions, but you can put your bolts right back in those. We're not going to be using those to connect and those bolts will help block any dirt or debris getting in there. We've seen our passenger side attachment points, let's go take a look at the driver side. Here, we're going to have two in very similar spots as the passenger side, plus one more, just up above our exhaust hanger here. We're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant in each of our attachment points, and just make sure we don't have any dirt or anything blocking our threads so our bolts will go in nice and easy for us. This is a tube brush that we sell here at etrailer. If you don't have one, it's part number 814092. For securing our hitch, we're going to use our provided hardware. It's going to have a conical tooth washer. The only thing you want to remember is the the teeth of that washer, they need to face up towards our hitch. You can bring it up, line up our holes with our weld nuts, we'll get one started here on the passenger side, and then we'll get one started on our driver side. Then we can just let our itch rest on those while we get our other fasteners started. Let's take a quick look, just to be sure that our hitch is centered here with the vehicle, then we can snug down our fasteners. Now we need to look into our instructions to find the torque specifications and torque each of our bolts down appropriately. With those torqued down appropriately, we're now ready to raise our exhaust back up into position. We'll just slide our hangers back on. Then we'll just pull down our strap and our hitch is ready for use. With our exhaust back in place, that's going to complete our installation of the Curt Custom Fit Class 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12122 on our 2016 Nissan Rogue.

Very fast shipping. 3 of the mounting holes were very rusted, needed a tap to clean them up. Only 4 holes on hitch matched 5 holes on frame. This hitch will be used only for a bike rack so no problem. Price was very good. Checked with 3 hitch places they wanted between 3-4 hundred installed. Very happy customer. Chuck D. 538701

Comments

The mounting flanges on a trailer hitch are designed for straight line strength, not lateral strength. The flanges are actually designed to have some side to side give in them, so that if they get flexed during shipping, they can be easily bent back into place. As long as the powder coat didnt crack and there arent any cracks in the mounting flange itself, the hitch will work just fine after being bent back into place. You will want to flex the hitch back into position so that all the mounting hardware is used. You might only be carrying a bike rack for the time being, but in the future you might need to tow and might not recall that one of the mounting locations wasnt used. This would weaken the hitch to an unknown extent. Ill link you to a help article that shows a few different methods of manipulating the hitch back into place, which should be done before using the hitch.

Easy to put on yoursef....only thing that was a little complicated was trying to put the heat shield back on....we had to cut the driver side one because it wouldnt fit with the hitch on. Nothing wrong with it though. Love it and works great. 494069

The hitch arrived in a timely fashion, and I had it installed by a local car service business. They said that they had to bend something on the hitch (or maybe on the car itself) to make it fit completely right. I had seen some comments previously about one of the bolt holes not quite lining up right--apparently that's what happened. 440687

This hitch was installed on a 2017 1/2 Nissan Rogue. The Curt hitch is a quality product, plus the instructions and videos are a great help. This is the second hitch I have installed from eTrailer. I am an experienced DIYer, so I had the hitch aligned and bolted in four places in 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I could not get the final bolt started without some modification. Disappointing! First, I tried filing the holes slightly larger, but I finally resorted to hammering the forward, passenger side flange outward to make the bolt holes line up. I would have given a five star rating if this problem did not occur. Maybe it's a Nissan issue. Finally, I reinstalled the passenger side panel with no interference with the hitch, and the driver side took a little bending, but I did not need to cut the panel and there was not interference with the exhaust system. 423068

Comments

Sounds like your hitch was flexed during shipping, Richard. The manufacturers of the hitches design them so that the frame attachment arms are made of mild steel so that they can flex. They do this to prevent stress fractures from occurring over time due to changes in temperature or impact from potholes, etc. Because they are made to flex, they can sometimes get knocked out of alignment causing the holes not to line up properly. To fix this, I usually hold the arm firmly in a table vise and use the cross tube like a lever. You can think of the connection between the tube and the arm as the pivot point, and you would basically be opening up the angle. If a table vise is not available, an open step can also be used for leverage on the arm. If the hitch is only off by a small margin and you can get the bolts in on one side, you can also attach the one side and use a pry bar or board to push the other arm into place. Once the holes line up, get a bolt in place to keep the arm from moving back. You should be able to tell which side has been flexed if you lay the hitch flat on the floor and look down on top of it. If it looks like both arms were knocked toward each other, you can use a jack and a board to spread them apart.

2014 Nissan Rogue

I recently ordered/received a curt hitch for my 2014 nissan rogue. When the hitch arrived, it was well packaged and the instructions were in color and simple to read. After removing the two factory splash shields, installation was a breeze. Less than a half hour install. After the hitch was installed I reinstalled the splash sheilds. The passenger side went back on with no problems, had yo do some minor cutting on the driver side. Nothing a pair of cutters couldn't solve. The only negative I have about the hitch is shipping time. 143991

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Does Curt Trailer Hitch for 2018 Nissan Rogue Interfere with Hands Free Liftgate Sensor
  • The Curt hitch part # C12122 that you referenced will not interfere with the hatch sensor totally. Worst case scenario you'll just have to kick to either side of the hitch opening but it will still work fine. This also is true for the 2 inch hitch part # C13204 you mentioned as well.

  • Will Hitch Installation on 2017 Nissan Rogue Affect Operation of Rear Hatch Lift Sensors
  • Automated rear hatch opening systems on vehicles like your 2017 Nissan Rogue usually have multiple sensors at various points on the rear bumper cover. Hitch installation will often block the centrally-located sensor but usually does not affect those towards the outside edges of the bumper. So if you were to install one of the available 2-inch Class III hitches like Draw-Tite # 75902 or Curt # C13204, or either of the 1-1/4-inch Class II models, # 36542 or # C12122, you will just need...

  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C12122 that you referenced will measure 14" from the ground to the top, inside edge of the receiver tube opening. If you measured from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler while level then you will want to use a ball mount with around a 2" rise. Unfortunately, none of the Euro Style Drawbar will be long enough to clear the rear bumper due to it being recessed 7-3/4" therefore, you will be best off using the Curt Class II Drawbar part # C45016...

They also have to fit around the vehicle's features such as it's exhaust. These things mean that hitches for any one given car will often tend to look a lot like one another. That means the combined weight of the carrier, # C18145 at 29 pounds, and the cargo cannot be greater than 175 pounds. In this scenario you would take 175 and subtract 29 to get 146 pounds.
