Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Chevrolet Impala - Curt

Today on our 2015 Chevrolet Impala we're going to review and install the CURT class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C12115. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like once it's installed. The main body of the hitch is tucked up nicely underneath the vehicle and we've got our square crosstube. It's got a fully welded design and a nice black powder-coated finish. We have a chain hold down on each side of our receiver tube, and this is a class two 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" receiver tube that's capable of up to 350 pounds of tongue weight and a 3,500 pound tow capacity. Next we'll go ahead and show you the minimum tools required for installing this hitch. We've got a 13mm socket, 3/4" socket, ratchet for each socket, and a torque wrench.

Next we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/2". From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is approximately 11-1/2". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. We'll now go ahead with the installation. Next we need to trim the rear lower fascia.

We need to trim it back enough to allow for the hitch receiver tube to sit right behind the body lip. This application, some of the trimming's already been done, but if you take your tape measure and hook it to the corner, you're going to measure over approximately 1-1/2", make a mark, and draw a straight line down the body lip where the fascia will need to be trimmed. A utility knife can be used, but the plastic's pretty think and tough to get through so I recommend using a rotary tool. Now once we have it trimmed out, all of the fascia is to the rear of the body lip and where our hitch crosstube will sit. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the driver side. Next we're going to put our receiver crosstube into place.

This receiver crosstube will fit over top of the manufacturer's weld nut where we removed the manufacturer's exhaust hanger bolt. Once the hitch is in place, we'll then secure it with an 8mm bolt and conical tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch as it will go through the hitch, into the weld nut, through the exhaust hanger, and get secured with an additional nut on the other side. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install these fasteners. As we install our fasteners we'll just install them finger tight at this time. Next we'll install the forward bracket.

The forward bracket is going to attach to the rear axle. Now our forward bracket is going to have three pre-drilled holes. The two pre-drilled holes will go down. The single pre-drilled hole will go to the frame. It will get secured to the frame using a 1/2" bolt and split lock washer, going through the bracket, into the frame, and then get secured in the frame with a handle nut. Go ahead and put in place. Again, we'll just install our fasteners finger tight at this time. Next, we'll install our hardware here in the crosstube for the center section. For this application we'll be using the rear four holes that are already in the crosstube, use the 1/2" carriage bolts that will come down through the crosstube, then go through the center section, and get secured with a 1/2" flange nut. Let's go ahead and put all four carriage bolts in place and then raise the center section into position. Now with the carriage bolts in place, let's go ahead and install the center section. Next we'll install our hardware for the center section to forward bracket. Here at our forward bracket we'll line the center section up with the pre-drilled hole, use our 1/2" bolt and split lock washer, going down through the two, and then install our flange nut. Now with all our hardware in place we'll go ahead and tighten it down and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Quick tech tip: we recommend to go ahead and trim the handle nut so it's not sticking out and possibly catch dirt or debris as you're traveling down the road. To trim the handle nut you could use a pair of side cutters, a cutoff wheel, or we're just going to use a pair of tin snips. Gets that extra piece cut off and out of the way. Now with everything installed, tightened down, and torqued to specifications, we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of the CURT class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C12115, on our 2015 Chevrolet Impala. .

Product was hard to install, it took me over 4 hours to install because the holes didn't line up with the bolts on my car frame; but I am happy with the way it looks on the car, it is almost hidden.... 68966

I purchased Curt Trailer Hitch C12115 for my 2013 Buick Lacrosse. I did research on etrailer website how to install on my car before buying. I checked if the pictures on line matched all connections on my car and ordered hitch. I received my order quick within 4 days. I don't have access to a lift so I had to jack car up and brace with jack stand. It took approx. 1 hr. because of bracing car properly. Installation is relatively simple. Hitch is 1/2" steel and I would recommend this product . 231754

This product was advertised as being pretty much hidden from view. The fact is that the hitch hangs lower than it needs to on our 2013 Malibu. We are frequently pounding or scraping the hitch on the pavement when entering or leaving parking lots. 265953

I was recommended by a friend to look at your website for trailer and bicycle hitches. I was totally overwhelmed by the selection and what would be the appropriate selection. Meghan was extremely helpful in explaining the pros and cons of the hitches and helping be choose the correct bike rack with accessories. I placed the order and was totally surprised when four days later the packages were on my front porch. I have not had a chance to have them installed because it is still snowing/raining in our area of the country. I will share a picture when we begin our riding season. Thanks Meghan, for all of your help! 501922

Hitch is nice but not quite as quick to put in as suggested. I installed this on a 2015 Impala LTZ. The install shown is on an LT. A major difference is that the LTZ has dual exhausts that extend thru the bumper. At the bumper each pipe is surrounded by a heat shield. Getting out the exhaust hanger bolts was difficult until I trimmed back the plastic shield further and removed the four plastic slip fasteners which stabilizer the plastic shield. You need to bend down the shield and attack the bolt from the top. After that, all went smoothly until I didn't leave enough play on the re-installed hanger bolts causing the front mount to not line up with the bolt on the front hanger. Once I corrected that, everything went smoothly. End result, my 40 minute install took almost three hours. Next step, wiring harness. 244457

Very well built. Instructions are easy to read and follow. It only took about a hour to install which is pretty good considering I am 72 years old & did it by myself. My only objection is the box says made in U.S.A. but the parts say made in China!!! That's why no 5 stars. 539163

I've had nothing but positive experiences with E-Trailer on previous purchases so on my new car I kept my business where it deserved to stay, shopping around locally I found eTrailer was actually the cheapest for the same hitch that others in my area wanted $300 for. Install was extremely simple, muffler would need to be lowered but luckily for my the factory mufflers were removed and replaced with flowmasters making install extremely simple, easy to install at home, will need an extra pair of hands to hold the hitch up till its bolted then smooth sailing, I installed this to tow my Jet Ski and already used it and didn't let me down. Highly recommended. 262052

This will make a good hitch for a bike rack or light towing but I would not use to tow a large trailer. Attachment points are to sheet metal that holds up the exhaust system and to a frame attachement for the rear suspention. These are not very beefy and would be concerned about damaging the car, but great for a couple of bikes 114647

Still holding strong. It held up real well for my cross country trip in December 2018 carrying two bikes from South Carolina to Nevada. That’s over 2100 miles through heavy rains & snow with absolutely no issues. 615185

Great product and good value. Simple DIY installation. Just view the instruction video. and read the enclosed instructions. I chose not to trim the rear fascia, I just held it down with a 1-1/2" wooden wedge, so installing the cross tube was a little tight, but doable. This is by far the hardest part ...but still can be a one man, one hour job. I can see how trimming the fascia first makes installing the replacement 8 mm bolt and nut much easier. I also added a extra 1/16th spacer washer over the weld nut between the body and hitch. Just to make sure I didn't break the weld nut loose when tightening. The rest of the installation is quick and easy. 613537

This hitch is very nice and heavy duty. Installation was easy and I did it by myself. But a helper would have made it even easier. The wiring was easy as well. Only hard part of the hole installation was getting the black cable through the fire wall and ev ed n that was not to bad. Just attach the end to a hanger with electrical tape and carefully push through rubber grommet. And the fact that there's no drilling is a plus. The cheapest local shop wanted almost $400.00 installed, I saved around $200.00 , love it. Thank you etrailer. My go to place for all of my trailer needs. 602267

I ordered several parts to complete the towing set up. All parts came at the same time in just in a few days. Tracking was easy to follow and arrived on time . I followed video instruction that I found on web site. Pictures and instructions came with shipment, and was easy to follow. When installing the two bolts , one on each end , I added flat washers before applying the two nuts, to finish the job. 598650

overall hitch fit well. didn't think getting the front 2 bolts to start would be such an issue. be sure and try to start the front side bolts BEFORE you hold hitch up in place . we used the bolt removed from the exhaust hanger to clean out threads on passenger side, could not get this bolt to start before we threaded old bolt through. after we got those bolts to thread the rest went fairly well. just a note, on a 2014 malibu the back bracket is shown in wrong position. if you install it according to pics in instructions it will clunk on exhaust. the wiring looks easy until you try to run wire from back of car to front and the battery. wasn't aware of this until after i had product at home. may me easier to have it installed by a pro. Good Luck !! 583144

Free shipping and it came in 2 days. Easy to install but instructions were confusing. Three different sheets of similar instructions. Needs to be clearer that hitch flange goes on the front side of frame rail flange and weldnut should be in flange holes. Exploded view of how the two line up would be most helpful. 553183

Thanks for the note. I love you guys! I switch company cars every 6-9 months, and unless it's an SUV with a tow hitch, I buy one of your hitches so that my husband can use his bike rack and continue to road and mountain bike. Honestly, it's a lifesaver for our marriage, since he gets pretty cranky when he can't ride! Looking forward to the newest hitch next week. Thanks for your consistently great service. 459614

The product is strong. Worked with many different loads over long and short distances. Nothing loosened up or bent car parts. Pro: strong and works. Con: the design is bad because it is so low to the ground. I can bottom out over some speed bumps going turtle speed, some road, driveways, and parking lot connectios Where there is a steep change of incline. I bottom out. Horrible sound and possible damage to the car frame. No car is designed to take that kind of force with sudden impact at those connection points on the car. I havev seen other designs that are different that have much more ground clearance. This design has a bar that is welded onto thea point that makes it very low. An other design I saw does not have that kind of connection. The bar just goes streight out avoiding that unnecessary drop in ground clearance. 451868

This hitch is good but the instructions are not so good for the Impala Premier. There is more stuff in the way than the instructions show (made for Impala LS). The video should be consulted before trying to install on Premier. This will save time and grief. 414410

Trailer hitches such as # C12115 have their own ratings but you always go by the lowest rating, vehicle or hitch, and in this case the vehicle is lower.
