Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Chevrolet Impala - Curt

Today on our 2015 Chevrolet Impala we're going to review and install the CURT class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C12115. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like once it's installed. The main body of the hitch is tucked up nicely underneath the vehicle and we've got our square crosstube. It's got a fully welded design and a nice black powder-coated finish. We have a chain hold down on each side of our receiver tube, and this is a class two 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" receiver tube that's capable of up to 350 pounds of tongue weight and a 3,500 pound tow capacity. Next we'll go ahead and show you the minimum tools required for installing this hitch. We've got a 13mm socket, 3/4" socket, ratchet for each socket, and a torque wrench.

Next we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/2". From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is approximately 11-1/2". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. We'll now go ahead with the installation. Next we need to trim the rear lower fascia.

We need to trim it back enough to allow for the hitch receiver tube to sit right behind the body lip. This application, some of the trimming's already been done, but if you take your tape measure and hook it to the corner, you're going to measure over approximately 1-1/2", make a mark, and draw a straight line down the body lip where the fascia will need to be trimmed. A utility knife can be used, but the plastic's pretty think and tough to get through so I recommend using a rotary tool. Now once we have it trimmed out, all of the fascia is to the rear of the body lip and where our hitch crosstube will sit. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the driver side. Next we're going to put our receiver crosstube into place.

This receiver crosstube will fit over top of the manufacturer's weld nut where we removed the manufacturer's exhaust hanger bolt. Once the hitch is in place, we'll then secure it with an 8mm bolt and conical tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch as it will go through the hitch, into the weld nut, through the exhaust hanger, and get secured with an additional nut on the other side. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install these fasteners. As we install our fasteners we'll just install them finger tight at this time. Next we'll install the forward bracket.

The forward bracket is going to attach to the rear axle. Now our forward bracket is going to have three pre-drilled holes. The two pre-drilled holes will go down. The single pre-drilled hole will go to the frame. It will get secured to the frame using a 1/2" bolt and split lock washer, going through the bracket, into the frame, and then get secured in the frame with a handle nut. Go ahead and put in place. Again, we'll just install our fasteners finger tight at this time. Next, we'll install our hardware here in the crosstube for the center section. For this application we'll be using the rear four holes that are already in the crosstube, use the 1/2" carriage bolts that will come down through the crosstube, then go through the center section, and get secured with a 1/2" flange nut. Let's go ahead and put all four carriage bolts in place and then raise the center section into position. Now with the carriage bolts in place, let's go ahead and install the center section. Next we'll install our hardware for the center section to forward bracket. Here at our forward bracket we'll line the center section up with the pre-drilled hole, use our 1/2" bolt and split lock washer, going down through the two, and then install our flange nut. Now with all our hardware in place we'll go ahead and tighten it down and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Quick tech tip: we recommend to go ahead and trim the handle nut so it's not sticking out and possibly catch dirt or debris as you're traveling down the road. To trim the handle nut you could use a pair of side cutters, a cutoff wheel, or we're just going to use a pair of tin snips. Gets that extra piece cut off and out of the way. Now with everything installed, tightened down, and torqued to specifications, we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of the CURT class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C12115, on our 2015 Chevrolet Impala. .

Thanks for the note. I love you guys! I switch company cars every 6-9 months, and unless it's an SUV with a tow hitch, I buy one of your hitches so that my husband can use his bike rack and continue to road and mountain bike. Honestly, it's a lifesaver for our marriage, since he gets pretty cranky when he can't ride! Looking forward to the newest hitch next week. Thanks for your consistently great service. 459614

This hitch is good but the instructions are not so good for the Impala Premier. There is more stuff in the way than the instructions show (made for Impala LS). The video should be consulted before trying to install on Premier. This will save time and grief. 414410

I ordered several parts to complete the towing set up. All parts came at the same time in just in a few days. Tracking was easy to follow and arrived on time . I followed video instruction that I found on web site. Pictures and instructions came with shipment, and was easy to follow. When installing the two bolts , one on each end , I added flat washers before applying the two nuts, to finish the job. 598650

Keith, at this time, there is only a hitch receiver with a 1-1/4-inch opening for your Malibu.

Very well built. Instructions are easy to read and follow. It only took about a hour to install which is pretty good considering I am 72 years old & did it by myself. My only objection is the box says made in U.S.A. but the parts say made in China!!! That's why no 5 stars. 539163

In a little less than 1 hour we were finished with the install, approx. 5 min. was used to unpack the hitch. Once the muffler was removed it was very easy to install the rear bolts but make sure you replace the muffler before securing the back of the hitch to the frame. The trailer hitch will be used to carry our bikes to various trails and to the beach. 384623

overall hitch fit well. didn't think getting the front 2 bolts to start would be such an issue. be sure and try to start the front side bolts BEFORE you hold hitch up in place . we used the bolt removed from the exhaust hanger to clean out threads on passenger side, could not get this bolt to start before we threaded old bolt through. after we got those bolts to thread the rest went fairly well. just a note, on a 2014 malibu the back bracket is shown in wrong position. if you install it according to pics in instructions it will clunk on exhaust. the wiring looks easy until you try to run wire from back of car to front and the battery. wasn't aware of this until after i had product at home. may me easier to have it installed by a pro. Good Luck !! 583144

My item was ordered and received in two days. KUDOS for the team that made it happen. It was just in time to have it ready for our weekend trip. The installation was a breeze even though I didn't have a car lift at my disposal it still only took my son and myself an hour to install it. See the finished photo below with the bike rack connected. 515870

The product is strong. Worked with many different loads over long and short distances. Nothing loosened up or bent car parts. Pro: strong and works. Con: the design is bad because it is so low to the ground. I can bottom out over some speed bumps going turtle speed, some road, driveways, and parking lot connectios Where there is a steep change of incline. I bottom out. Horrible sound and possible damage to the car frame. No car is designed to take that kind of force with sudden impact at those connection points on the car. I havev seen other designs that are different that have much more ground clearance. This design has a bar that is welded onto thea point that makes it very low. An other design I saw does not have that kind of connection. The bar just goes streight out avoiding that unnecessary drop in ground clearance. 451868

2013 Buick LaCrosse

I purchased Curt Trailer Hitch C12115 for my 2013 Buick Lacrosse. I did research on etrailer website how to install on my car before buying. I checked if the pictures on line matched all connections on my car and ordered hitch. I received my order quick within 4 days. I don't have access to a lift so I had to jack car up and brace with jack stand. It took approx. 1 hr. because of bracing car properly. Installation is relatively simple. Hitch is 1/2" steel and I would recommend this product . 231754

I was recommended by a friend to look at your website for trailer and bicycle hitches. I was totally overwhelmed by the selection and what would be the appropriate selection. Meghan was extremely helpful in explaining the pros and cons of the hitches and helping be choose the correct bike rack with accessories. I placed the order and was totally surprised when four days later the packages were on my front porch. I have not had a chance to have them installed because it is still snowing/raining in our area of the country. I will share a picture when we begin our riding season. Thanks Meghan, for all of your help! 501922

Hitch is nice but not quite as quick to put in as suggested. I installed this on a 2015 Impala LTZ. The install shown is on an LT. A major difference is that the LTZ has dual exhausts that extend thru the bumper. At the bumper each pipe is surrounded by a heat shield. Getting out the exhaust hanger bolts was difficult until I trimmed back the plastic shield further and removed the four plastic slip fasteners which stabilizer the plastic shield. You need to bend down the shield and attack the bolt from the top. After that, all went smoothly until I didn't leave enough play on the re-installed hanger bolts causing the front mount to not line up with the bolt on the front hanger. Once I corrected that, everything went smoothly. End result, my 40 minute install took almost three hours. Next step, wiring harness. 244457

I was shocked that a English speaking customer service professional called me after I placed my order to ensure that I was aware that the parts I purchased would not work together. I’m 43 and and almost 100% buy online and I don’t know that I’ve EVER received this level of customer service, E V E R. I’d give more stars if the feedback would allow. Oh yeah, the hitch came quickly and packed very well. 770512

Product arrived seemed promising watched all the install videos the issue came when installing it myself. I was installing on a Chevy Malibu 2015. The clearance for the exhaust is terrible. You will either have to replace the exhaust hanger to account for sag from being a few years old. After getting install there was still a rattle from the rear exhaust hanger touching. Wrapping a rubber hose around the hanger easily fixed this but still annoying. I have not actually used the hitch yet but as other stated it hangs pretty low. I’ll update the review after a couple uses. 750092

great product for the price! its heavy duty, I've bottom out a couple of times. And the hitch is still holding strong. Great video installation. I was able to install it my self. I also purchased a cargo carrier from etrailer. the bottom expanding metal was light on the gauge. would have paid a little more for a heavier gauge. Hitch gets an excellent rating. carrier a three star. I would purchased again from etrailer. 727866

  • Trailer Hitch for 2019 Chevy Impala and Recommended Ball Mount, Hitch Ball and Wiring
There is a trailer hitch for your 2019 Chevy Impala; I highly recommend the Curt # C12115 because it is a bolt-on installation that will not require drilling into your Impala's frame to install. This Class II, 1-1/4" trailer hitch has a black powder coat finish which helps protect it from corrosion and also has a 3,500 lb towing capacity and 350 lb tongue weight capacity, though I did check the owner's manual and it states the maximum weight your Impala can tow is 1,000 lbs so that is...

  • Best Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2017 Buick Regal
If you are solely concerned about clearance for carrying your Reese Cargo Carrier # 63155 with your 2017 Buick Regal then the Curt # C12115 has about an inch more of clearance than the Draw-Tite # 36538. Your cargo carrier will easily clear the rear of your vehicle with either option though. Since the Curt requires the use of the strap # 18050 for all non-trailer loads you may consider the Draw-Tite instead. If using the strap isn't an issue then I recommend going with the Curt because...

  • Why Does Trailer Hitch Have Higher Towing Capacities than Vehicle Towing Capacity
Trailer hitches are first designed for a vehicle and then tested for a weight capacity independent of the vehicle they are designed for. This is why you'll see hitches for lighter duty vehicles with higher capacities than the vehicle. I admit it is a bit confusing but what it gives you is a hitch like the Curt part # C12115 that has more weight capacity than needed for the vehicle it is designed for like the 2015 Chevy Malibu. With a towing capacity you always have to go with the lowest...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2015 Chevy Malibu
It is not recommended to use the smaller trunk battery to install a trailer wiring harness on a 2015 Chevy Malibu. That small battery is not rated as high as the regular battery under the hood and using it could result in the trailer wiring harness not working properly. There are different trailer wiring harnesses recommended for different models of the 2015 Malibu. For a US or Canadian model that is NOT an LTZ use # 118604. For a US model that IS an LTZ use # 118602.

The owner's manual states: maximum trailer weight is calculated assuming only the...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2014 Chevy Malibu LS to Tow a 16 Foot Jon Boat
Curt trailer hitch # C12115 is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight so a 16 foot jon boat with 30 horse power motor won't be a problem for the hitch. But for the vehicle you will need to look in the owners manual for the towing capacity. It will likely be lower than the hitch rating. Whichever ends up being lower is the capacity you will need to go by. The correct ball mount for this hitch is # C45017. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2015 Chevrolet Malibu Turbo With Dual Exhaust
For your 2015 Chevrolet Malibu Turbo I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C12115. This hitch is a Class ll hitch and has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I spoke with my contact at Curt and they told me that the dual exhaust should be no issue when installing this hitch, so you should be good to go. I have attached an installation video for this hitch on a 2014 Malibu you can check out. A note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth...

  • Parts Needed to tow PWC Trailer with a 2015 Chevy Impala LTZ
We have exactly what you will need. But before that I wanted to thank you for looking up the towing capacity of your vehicle beforehand as that is a very important step many people ignore. The Curt Class II hitch part # C121115 is confirmed to fit your 2015 Chevy Impala LTZ and would work well for your needs. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. If the trailer you plan to tow calls for a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball you would want the ball mount part # C45571 or for...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2015 Buick Lacrosse FWD
The Draw-Tite Class II # 36538 or Curt # C12115 are a custom fit for your 2015 Buick Lacrosse FWD. The specific Draw-Tite hitch receiver you referenced will not fit your 2015 Buick Lacrosse FWD. With either option, if you will be towing a trailer you will additionally need a ball mount. I recommend # 36061 which comes with the pin and clip. You will still need a hitch ball like # 19258 for a 2 inch coupler or # 19257 for a 1-7/8 inch coupler. Then the wiring you will need for your...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2014 Buick Regal Turbo
Actually the 2014 Buick Regal can have the 2.0 liter turbo motor or a 2.4 liter motor that is not a turbo but has the eAssist feature. Curt trailer hitch # C12115 has been confirmed to fit the turbo models. It is currently the only hitch option for the 2014 Regal. If you plan on doing some towing the correct ball mount is # C45017. You can use 1-7/8 inch ball # 19256 or 2 inch ball # 19258. For trailer wiring use # 118639.

  • How to Transport Power Chair on 2018 Cadillac XTS That Has Only 100-lb Allowable Tongue Weight
I checked the online edition of the owner's manual for the 2018 Cadillac XTS and it does indeed state the maximum trailer weight is 1000-lbs, just as you mentioned, but is also notes that the tongue weight of the connected trailer should not exceed 10% of that maximum, which would then be 100-lbs. This note appears on the right-hand side of page 233. The three 1-1/4-inch Class II hitches offered for the car, such as Curt # C12115 shown on the linked page, all have the same rated maximum...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Chevy Malibu LTZ
I checked with Curt, the manufacturer of trailer hitch # C12115 and they list the hitch as a fit for all models of the 2014 Chevy Malibu so that would include the LTZ trim. I have linked the instructions below and a video showing an example installation for you. Other sites don't have human-power to keep up fit information like we do. Or they are caught up on the fact that the available hitches exclude Canadian models and not US models. The recommended ball mount with the hitch is #...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for 2019 Chevy Impala with Best Ground Clearance
I think I have a better solution for you, but all of the trailer hitches for your 2019 Chevy Impala are going to sit lower to the ground and about the same height. The Curt # C12115 and the Draw Tite part # 36538 both are going to be right at 10 inches from the ground. Since you want to carry a bike rack a trunk mounted bike rack would be your best option to allow to carry bikes and not have ground clearance issues. For that I recommend the Yakima Fullback part # Y02634 which is a confirmed...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2011 Buick LaCrosse CXL
Curt trailer hitch # C12115 has a capacity of 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight. But I checked the owner's manual online for your 2011 Buick LaCrosse and found that it has a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds so you are limited to that even though the hitch is rated higher. If the gross trailer weight is under 1,000 pounds then you can pull it with your LaCrosse. A 17 foot boat and trailer is likely heavier than that though. The recommended ball mount for this...

  • Best Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Cadillac XTS
The Curt Hitch part # C12115 that you referenced has been confirmed to fit your 2015 Cadillac XTS so I would recommend it for you. It has a concealed cross tube so it would be mainly out of plain sight. Check out the install video I attached. For trailer wiring you would want part # C59496, ball mount # C45017, 1-7/8 inch ball # 19256, 2 inch ball # 19258.
