Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Honda Accord - Curt

Speaker 1: Today, on this 2013 Honda Accord, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class One Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11681. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. One nice thing about this hitch is that it's tucked up nice against our fascia, but we still have plenty of clearance around the receiver opening, making this a great hitch to use with bike racks and cargo carriers. On the side of our receiver, you'll find our industry standard half-inch diameter hitch pinhole to secure our hitch-mounted accessories. The pin and clip is included with this hitch. On the end of our receiver you'll find this collar that's welded on to give us a nice, finished look, and to help reinforce our receiver opening.Welded onto the bottom of our hitch is our safety chain plate to attach the safety chains from our trailer.

For a class one hitch these are a fairly large opening, so we shouldn't have much problem at all hooking on most safety chains from our trailer. This hitch features a 200 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 2,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull. You want to make sure you consult the owner's manual of your Accord, and not exceed what the vehicle is rated for. Go by whichever number is less. Now I would like to point out, if you are going to be using this hitch for a non-trailer application, such as with a bike rack or a cargo carrier, Curt does recommend the use of a stabilization strap to help support the load. We have that available on our website if you need one.

Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. You are looking at about 11 1/2 inches from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, and about three inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we need to lower our exhaust in order to have room to get our hitch into position. In order to do this, we have one exhaust hanger at the rear and one at the front near our rear sub-frame. What we'll do, we'll spray some lubricant on the hanger so it'll slide off easier.

Then we'll use a pry bar to pry off the hanger. We'll do the same process for our other hanger. Now we need to remove our exhaust heat shield temporarily. It's held in place with four 10-millimeter bolts just like this one. We're looking at our driver's side frame rail now.

This hole here closest to our bumper beam attachment point is where we're going to have our hardware. It's the same on our passenger side. We'll take our pull wire, go through that hole, and it'll come out further up through the access hole. Now we'll take our spacer block, place it on the wire, push it inside the frame rail and we'll thread our carriage bolt onto the wire.Push that inside the frame rail and then we'll pull it through our hole, and we can remove our pull wire. Now, since our passenger side frame rail is the same way, we'll just make sure we repeat the same process. Now on our factory tow recovery hook, we'll take our U-bolt and drop it over it. Now with an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch into position, make sure that we don't push our hardware back in the frame, and we will secure it with our flange nuts. Now, we're using the larger flange nuts on our carriage bolts. Our U-bolt dropped through the holes in the hitch, and this will get our smaller diameter flange nuts. Now we'll use an 11/16 socket to tighten our carriage bolt flange nuts. Now we'll use a 9/16 socket to tighten the flange nuts in our U-bolts, making sure we tighten them as evenly as possible. That will torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. Okay, now I have marked out on our heat shield according to the instructions the area that we need to trim out to have clearance around our hitch. You can use a pair of tin snips to cut this, a rotary tool, or another cutting device that you may have, such as a grinder, to make this cut. Here's what it looks like once we have it cut. With our heat shield cut, we can now reinstall it. We're only able to use three bolts now because we cut off the hole back in this area here on the heat shield. We'll tighten the bolts down. Now we can raise our exhaust back up and reinstall our hangers. That completes our look at, and showing you how to install, the Curt Class One Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11681 on this 2013 Honda Accord.

Installed this on a 2017 Honda Accord Sport (dual exhausts). This is probably the 5th or 6th hitch that I've installed on various vehicles and overall very simple. Hardest part was trimming the heat shields; to do this you'll need a pair of tin snips or a Dremel. It took me about 4 tries to get it "just right". With only three bolts and four nuts total you'd really have to try hard to screw this one up. 722818

I chose this hitch over the Drawtite as it did not require removal of the spare tire well shield. Trimming the muffler heat shields was easy, and all the mounting points lined up perfectly. The only thing I wonder about is that with this hitch you are required to use a support strap if you use if for a bike rack or rear carrier, whereas with the Drawtite you did not. 459543

Perfect. It hasnt received a lot of use, just the occasional small rental trailer and a bike rack. However, the powder coated finished has held up very well in the Florida climate.

First I would like to say that etrailer.com was an absolute pleasure to deal with. I was notified of the progress of my order through several emails and was never left wondering when my order would arrive. The Curt hitch is well made and intelligently packaged to prevent damage. I watched the installation video on the etrailer.com website before I ordered so I knew what to expect. The installation was child's play; it took less than an hour. The hitch is being used the mount a 3 bike rack. The total weight of the rack and bikes is about 100 pounds. The hitch is rock solid and has no trouble at all supporting this load. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and installation. 276380

Comparison Review Draw-Tite or Drawtite 24899 and Curt 11681 hitches for 2013 Honda Accord 4-dr. Due to a manufacturing defect on the first hitch I installed, I had the pleasure of installing both of these hitches in the past 3 weeks on my Accord. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to write this review. Mounting hardware: Draw-Tite came with SAE Grade 5 carriage bolts, Curt came with stronger Grade 8 carriage bolts and nuts. Apparent strength of the hitch: reviews of the Curt state that a strap is needed to stabilize bike racks, Draw-Tite does not incl. this warranty condition. However, the Curt’s receiver channel has a welded collar that reinforces the square tube that is the business end of the receiver, the Draw-Tite does not. I suspect that Curt’s collar makes the receiver’s square tube less likely to split due to the high leverage exerted by a bike rack. Ease of Installation: Both hitches require a “spacer” or block that fits into the Accord’s rails with the carriage bolts. The width of the Draw-Tite’s spacer required the entrance hole to be enlarged by drilling, filing, or prying open the hole on my brand new Accord, the Curt’s spacer is sized so that it just slips in the existing hole without modification. Appearance: Both reveal about the same amount, the rounded cross section of the Curt tubing results in a more attractive look. Ground Clearance: When installed, the Curt hitch has better ground clearance that the Draw-Tite. Paint finish: the same for both. Manufacturing Quality Control: The sample of Draw-Tite (bearing a “Made in Mexico” sticker) I installed was defective. Drawbars had to be pounded in by sledge hammer and awkwardly pounded out by same, ruining the finish on the drawbar. Apparently, the receiver channel was deformed when the manufacturer “punched” the holes in the receiver channel that the drawbar pin fits through. Once the drawbar was pounded in, a welded button or stop within the channel prevented the drawbar from going in deep enough so that the drawbar holes and receiver channel holes lined up. Draw-Tite Customer Service acknowledged the defect and said that they had had several calls on this, were manufacturing new ones, orders were on backorder and I’d have to work with the place I bought the hitch for replacement. E-Trailer Customer service was superb, they contacted Draw-Tite, confirmed backorder status, shipped me the slightly more expensive Curt at no extra charge, provided pre-paid return shipping label for the defective Draw-Tite. The sample from Curt installed and worked perfectly. So I have had the pleasure of spending the time installing a hitch twice on the same car, resulting in the data for this comparison review. You have the benefit of reading this comparison review. 89186

Just a quick note, that button or stop is supposed to be there. It is used to prevent Class II 1-14 accessories from being used in Class I 1-1/4 hitches.

Easy install. Thanks for the video. I watched the video and read the directions, could not have been better. Right down to cutting the heat shield, just use the dimensions shown and you will be good. Took about 45 minutes to install, taking my time, and that includes jacking the rear and letting it down. Thanks etrailer again for another hitch and the support that comes with it. Saved $280 doing myself, including the harness, over what xhaul. wanted. 486365

I was able to install this in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Installation video and heat shield cutting instructions were on point. The only challenging part was undoing and putting back the muffler hockey puck holders. Make sure to wd-40 before you even attempt to pull those rubber things off. Anyways, I was determined and all turned out very good. In lew of raising the car, I was able to park it on an inclined driveway and had plenty of room to work with. I just used a sturdy box to hold up the muffler, no muffler strap necessary. Plus, when the car is lower to the ground, it helped lifting the thing a tad bit easier, being that I was solo on a this project. This thing had some heft to it. Just make sure you have all the tools in the instructions readily available. Don’t forget a sharpie so you can trace out the cutting line on the heat shield. Another good thing I found out is that you can occasionally check the tightness on the nuts cause they’re exposed convenient for easy future access. I foresee many years of confident service from this bad boy. 619227

Although the construction of the hitch is very good there is a problem with the way its constructed with respect to the welding of the hitch to the round bar to the flat mounting flanges. I don''t know if a fixture is used in the process and if there, is then it needs to be evaluated. After install it I used a hitch with an 8" length and found the bar was not level to the car. It pointed in a downward direction. I had to shim the back of the mounting flange to achieve some degree of levelness where the hitch goes. Before I did that I did check with a level to see if the car mounting surface was level to the floor and it was. After verifying that, I started with a machinist wedge and inserted it until I got a level reading. It turned out I had to shim both side 1/4". I bought several hitches from eTrailer in the past but they were made of square tubing and I had no problems. They still have the best around and will continue to buy from them. 264049

Great product - highly recommended. I purchased this one for a 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring. The Touring/Hybrid comes with an additional cover that hides the driver side frame where the hitch mounts. I removed the plastic cover, took some basic measurements, and cut it to allow access for the hitch to be bolted in. I then reinstalled the plastic cover before installing the hitch. From there, just follow the standard instructions. I had to make the modification to the exhaust heat shield as depicted in the included instructions. Everything else was straight-forward. I've installed and used this same hitch on another Accord, so I know it is bullet-proof. 416804

  • Parts Needed to Tow with a 2015 Honda Accord EX V6
Out of the available trailer hitches for your 2015 Honda Accord I recommend going with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11681 over the Draw-Tite Sportframe # 24899. They are both identical in Class and weight ratings and come with a 1-1/4" receiver. Please note that Class I trailer hitches are only rated to carry up to 2 bikes. The Curt warranty requires a Stabilizer Strap # 18050 for all non-supported loads, like the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443, but it doesn't have the weld stop inside...

Therefore you must abide by the lower of the two, being the car. As these capacities are well in-line with the trailer you plan to be hauling, there will be no warranty issues with this setup. • Why Does Curt Class I Hitch # C11681 Require Stabilization Strap But the Draw-Tite # 24899 Does Not
Curt does require that in order to maintain the limited lifetime warranty coverage on their Class I trailer hitch receivers a stabilizing strap must be used. This precaution does not indicate any weakness in the Curt hitch as compared to the Draw-Tite or Hidden-Hitch models. All are built to essentially identical standards. Curt simply chooses to be extra cautious by requiring use of the strap, which is a very good idea with any of the available hitches. Curt strap # 18050 is a cost-effective...

With one of these hitches in place you can use a compatible Class I 2-bike rack or a Class I cargo carrier. Links to both of these product...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid
We haven't had the chance to install a trailer hitch on a hybrid model of the 2015 Honda Accord so I don't have a video. Apparently according to at least 1 customer there is an air dam underneath that will need to be trimmed but that is not covered in the instructions for any of the hitches so it is a situation where you just have to use the hitch as a template to trim away the necessary area. Since you want to tow you should consult the vehicle owners manual, especially for a hybrid,...

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch 11681 Fit a 2014 Honda Accord Sport with Dual Exhaust
Yes, Curt trailer hitch # C11681 will fit your 2014 Honda Accord Sport with dual exhaust. Take a look at the picture I have included that shows the hitch on an Accord Sport model with dual exhaust. If you plan on using the hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier you will need to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, for non-trailer loads, Curt requires the use of stabilization strap # 18050. And on a bike rack you are limited to 2 bikes maximum. If...

  • Best Way To Carry 4 Bikes On A 2014 Honda Accord
One of the best trailer hitch options available for your 2014 Honda Accord is our Curt Class I Round Tube Receiver Hitch part # C11681. This product features a sturdy steel square tubing design and has a maximum tongue weight rating of 200 lbs. It will fit both the coupe and sedan models with no drilling required. You may also want to consider the stabilizer strap part # 18050 to ensure a smooth ride. Although the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider part # HR1400Z is a great bike rack, a Class...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring Sedan
I spoke to my contact at Curt and he informed me that the Curt Hitch part # C11681 that you referenced has been confirmed to fit all models of the 2015 Honda Accord so it would work great on your 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid Sedan Touring. If you're planning on using the hitch for light-duty towing purposes, I'd recommend you check the owner's manual first, to make sure Honda doesn't have any prohibitions regarding towing with a Hybrid. If they okay it, you'll also need the following to...

  • What is the Towing Capacity of a 2013 Honda Accord Sedan V6
You are correct, the 2013 Honda Accord sedan does have a listed towing capacity of 1,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 100 pounds tongue weight. Even though the hitches available, such as Curt hitch # C11681, are rated higher you will still need to go by the capacity listed in the vehicle owners manual. The correct ball mount to use with this hitch and vehicle is # C45521. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. For trailer wiring, if your Accord has LED...

  • Fit and Compatibility of Hitch and Bike Rack for a 2015 Honda 4-Door Accord
Yes, you are correct the Curt Class I 1-1/4 receiver # C11681 and the Swagman XTC # S64670 will be a fit for your 2015 Honda Accord 4-door Sedan. The Curt hitch does require, for warranty purposes, you to use a stabilization strap like # 18050 for any non-trailer load; which is a bike rack. Because the Curt requires the strap, I typically recommend the Draw-Tite hitch # 24899 instead. The only difference is they will install a little different and the bumper clearance on the Draw-Tite...

  • Trimming Under Body Panel on a 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid to Install a Trailer Hitch
The under body panel in question will have to either be removed or trimmed to install a trailer hitch on your 2017 Honda Accord. The area trimmed is approximately 1 inch wide by 6 inches long. I have included a picture from the instructions for the Draw-Tite hitch instructions for this vehicle, # 24899.

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Honda Accord Coupe
Yes, the Curt Hitch part # C11681 that you referenced has been confirmed to fit your 2015 Honda Accord Coupe so I would recommend it for you. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This rack has a ton of positive reviews from our customers who have tried it. Check out the review video I attached for more info. Curt requires the use of a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 when using this hitch with...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2013 Honda Accord Coupe for Use with a Thule Helium Aero Bike Rack
I have included a customer submitted photo of the Curt trailer hitch # C11681 installed on a Honda Accord for you to view. I would say it blends in a little more than Draw-Tite hitch # 24899 but both are still visible beneath the rear fascia. Both stick out about the same, which is understandable since they mount to the same locations and have similar designs. Ground clearance is going to basically be identical too. Since you want to use the hitch for a Thule Helium Aero bike rack,...

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2014 Honda Accord Sedan
The Curt 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch you referenced, part # C11681, is one of three light-duty hitches offered for your 2014 Honda Accord Sedan. All share the same capacity of 200-lbs maximum tongue weight (the downward force on the hitch) as well as the limitation to carry no more than 2 bikes. Class I hitches must be used only with Class I-rated bike carriers. If it were me, I would opt for the Draw-Tite # 24899 to avoid the need for the stabilizing strap # 18050. We do offer a range...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2015 Honda Accord Sedan
All of the trailer hitches for your 2015 Honda Accord are going to be Class I hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers so you would not be able to use a 2 inch bike rack. You could use an adapter but that will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent (from 200 pounds down to 100 pounds) and put additional stress on the hitch and vehicle. Also, Class I trailer hitches can only support up to 2 bikes maximum. Even if the bike rack used is Class I compatible and can hold more...
