Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Toyota Prius

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Toyota Prius, we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Curt class one trailer hitch receiver, part number C11473. This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. You can see the cross tube is completely hidden behind the bumper fascia. The only thing you can see is the receiver tube, and it sits nice and flush with the edge of the bumper fascia so you don't have to worry about hitting your legs or your shins on it when loading and unloading the back of the vehicle. This is gonna be a class one hitch. It's gonna be an inch and a quarter by an inch and a quarter.

As you can see, it has a nice reinforced collar to give you a little extra stability on the receiver tube. Keep in mind that does not change the weight capacity on the hitch. Your safety chain loops are gonna be a rolled steel style. It gives you plenty of room for different sized safety chain hooks. Your hitch pin hole is gonna be half inch in diameter. This hitch is gonna have a nice black powder coat finish, so it's gonna resist any rust or corrosion.

It's gonna stay looking nice for a very long time. As far as weight capacity goes, this is gonna have a 200 pound max tongue weight, which is downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. It's gonna have a 2,000 max trailer weight, which is trailer plus the load included. I do recommend checking the owner's manual of your Prius and make sure your vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You wanna go for the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch.

Keep in mind, Curt does recommend you use a stabilization strap for any non-wheeled loads. Now let's give you a few measurements to help you when deciding on any hitch mounted accessories you may need, such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper will be about two inches. From the ground to the top innermost part of the receiver tube will be about 13 1/2 inches. Now let's show you how to get this installed. We're gonna start by removing 14 push pin fasteners from along the underside of our bumper fascia. Take a flathead screwdriver, push in like that, and just pry out the center.

Once you have your fasteners out, you're gonna have some underbody panels here that we need to pull out. Now it's a little hard to see, so I wanna pull the panel down, but this are also gonna be attached. If you take a large flathead screwdriver, put it in there like that, this is attached to a screw. Turn it, kinda put a little bit of down pressure on it, you'll be able to pull those off. We're gonna have four bolts that attach our bumper beam. Take a 12 millimeter socket. We're gonna remove those bolts. And that's what we need to do, is we need to take our bumper beam, push up, and then back like that. Next we need to pull out our fascia, and we're gonna go up and we're gonna take these clips off for this wiring that's holding this lower piece on. We'll take a screwdriver and you're gonna push in on each side, and then push it up. Next we're gonna have a small Phillips screw on the bottom corner of each side. Go ahead and remove that. And then each clip we're just gonna push out like that until we get enough room to get our bumper beam out without damaging our fascia. Like that. Now, each tab that we have wiring on, we're gonna push it in. There's a little tab right on the top. You're just gonna push down. It's like a locking tab. We'll go ahead and pull this off. This tab that was holding our bumper beam against the back part of our cabin, we need to flatten that out. We'll just take a hammer, just like that. We need to do that on both sides. Now with an extra set of hands, we're gonna get our hitch put right behind our bumper beam. We're gonna bolt it into the same place that we took it out of. We're gonna use existing hardware. We'll get a couple bolts in on each side to hold it in place. Once we get our hardware in place, go ahead and tighten it all down. Once we get it all tightened down, then we're gonna torque it down to the specifications in the instructions. Next we're gonna reinstall our bumper fascia. We're just gonna line up our clips. Now we can reinstall the 12 screws. That's what we're gonna do, is we're gonna test fit our panels, and along with our instructions we're gonna go and find where we need to cut out. And you can see this one is hitting our hitch right here, we're gonna pull this one back out. Next you can use a utility knife. I'm gonna try using a pair of scissors. And we'll cut that out. This plastic's pretty flexible, so it looks like a pair of scissors is working just fine. I'll take my utility knife, and we'll test fit it again. Looks like we'll be good on that panel. Now we can go ahead and get our push pin fasteners put back into place. You can see where our hitch is gonna come through this. Take our utility knife. Test fit this, make sure we've got enough cut out here. Reinstall your push pin fasteners. And that'll do it for our look at and installation of the Curt class one trailer hitch receiver, part number C11473 on our 2018 Toyota Prius.

The hitch fits perfectly and now I can use my bike rack. The video was extremely helpful and gave me the confidence to do the installation. I was concerned about disassembling the back of my new Prius, but it went very smoothly and took me less than 2 hours to complete the entire job. Thanks for your products and support. 696893

This is the second hitch I've ordered from this company and both were great. Shipping was fast and easy, and "William B" was very helpful over the phone. He made sure that this new hitch worked with an existing bike rack I loved and did not want to part with. William saved me a lot of money, and I'm grateful! 674399

This is nice. I saw a hitch someone else had put on their Prius Prime and it looked cheap and thin. This Curt is beefy. The powder coating is thick. Well worth the money. Etrailer's system when you purchase includes the video to install. Very helpful when you order 654593

Quick delivery and quality product with clear instructions for installation. Fit the car perfectly and the instructions on the website regarding the type of hitch and bike rack needed for a 2018 Toyota Prius Prime was right on target. 645273

Only car so I pull a light HF trailer once in a while. Coast to coast w my 2008 Prius. Just stayed in the slow lane. Beautiful install. Hardest part is removing ABS bottom pans. They're kind of squeezed in there. Two need to be notched around the bar. I chose to cut short and bend up a flange by heating the edge and turning it up into a flange like the other edges of the pan. No idea if worth the trouble. Cutout on center pan seemed mislabeled on instructions. Offset from bolt hole isn't the same on my 2019 Prime. My install came up centered between raised bumps on the pan. No light wiring yet :( Probably wish I'd done it while pans were off. 656475

etrailer is one of the clearest, best-designed websites I have seen for any product. There are so many trailer hitches and bike racks on the market, and etrailers' ratings and search feature enabled me to home in on exactly the ones to buy. They shipped their product immediately, and kept me informed about its delivery. I installed the hitch this morning, put the rack on it, and I am ready for vacation. I have never had a better online buying experience. 549353

Took a bit longer than predicted to install due to the bolt locations on the Prius and extra wires attached to some of the parts that needed removal, but once completed, it looks really nice. I've had a couple of Curt hitches in the past, and always happy with the quality. Definitely prepare to have a 2nd person help with installation when you get to the part when you bolt in the bumper and hitch. 379385

I bought this for a brand new model of Toyota Prius (Pruis Prime). It fit perfectly and is kind of concealed under the bumper but works just fine. It was a bit too much for me to install but the dealer had not problems with the install. 492212

Excellent product, delivery, and design! As advertised it was a challenge to install, but well worth the effort. Being full time RV'ers we tow our Prius on a dolly and need to move the dolly occasionally. This dolly is too heavy to move very far by hand. I think this hitch will serve us well. 428144

Thanks for your email. I was able to install the hitch with no problems. Now I am concerned that I might have been better off with the Draw-Tite model. My issue is that I want to buy a platform-style bike rack but am afraid that my Curt hitch is too far under the rear bumper of my car. Do you know it a Prius Prime with the Curt hitch will accommodate the Swagman XTC-2 bike rack? A question on your site (214525) suggests that it will, but golly that hitch is really far under my car. I’m wondering if a bike would fit between the rack and the rear of the car. Thanks, Bill 582425

Comments

I understand your concerns about using the Swagman XTC-2 # S64670
Swagman XTC-2 2-Bike Platform Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Trailer Hitches
$179.00
and your Curt Trailer Hitch. The Swagman bike rack shank measures 8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the first wheel hoop. If you can take a quick measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole on your hitch to see how far recessed it is under the bumper or the closest part of your Prius. Now keep in mind that that is to the wheel hoop, and that does not allow for pedals or handle bars of the bike. We do have a Help Article about this that may help you out, but for this article it is making sure that it would clear the spare tire, for your instance you would just want to hold a straight edge on your bumper.

I just put this on my 2018 Prius Prime Premium. Install was not too bad. It did take me more like three hours. I could do it in half the time the second go round. I was being really careful with the plastic bits on my new car. And I did it without a lift and two friends. It took some yoga, but I was able to hang one end of the hitch with two bolts, then start the bolts on the opposite end through both the bumper and hitch, then remove the bolts from the first end, and reinsert them through the bumper and hitch. 521319

Works like a champ! Installed on our 2016 Toyota Prius in about 90 minutes. Read the instructions, watch the install video and grab an extra set of hands and you'll have it installed in no time! We are using it with a two-bike mount Yakima Holdup and a 4" - 2" to 1 1/4" adapter riser (We currently have a 2" hitch on our RAV4, so we can swap the rack between cars). Sways a little bit, but some black duck tape around the 1 1/4 inch adapter eliminate most sway. 523298

Good instructions. Agree challenging install for one person. I used jack to support hitch and thread a bolt on one side WITHOUT the bumper. Then put bolt through bumper and hitch on other side. Only suggested improvement is set top bolt holes a bit wider -- barely fit my 2016 Prius. 265152

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for 2018 Toyota Prius Prime with Curt Hitch Installed
  • For a Class I hitch like yours we do not recommend the use of hitch adapters since they cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed on by 50 percent and add quite a bit of movement. Instead we'd recommend a bike rack like the Thule Roadway # TH912XTR that has a longer shank that will fit underneath the bumper and not cause any fit issues. I attached a review video for this rack for you to check out as well that shows it installed on a similar 2016 Toyota Prius.

  • Class I Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2018 Toyota Prius Prime to Avoid Need for Using Hitch Adapter
  • The MaxxTow Aluminum 2-Inch Hitch Cargo Carrier # MT70108 could be used with a 1-1/4-inch to 2-inch hitch adapter like Brophy # HTAD or # HT5R but use of such adapters will cause you to lose half of your hitch's capacity. This loss comes from the actual load being moved further away from the hitch tube, which increase leverage on the hitch. The 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches made for your 2018 Prius Prime, Draw-Tite # 24966 and Curt # C11473, have a 200-lb tongue weight (TW) rating which...

The issue is that on most Class I trailer hitches there is a stop punched into the receiver so that Class II accessories cannot be used thus helping to avoid overloading the hitch. You can, however, use Curt hitch # C11473 on your 2017 Toyota Prius because even though it too is a Class I trailer hitch it does not have the stop in the receiver. Curt on the other hand has carried over the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11473 as being a confirmed fit for your 2018 Prime. As you mentioned in your question, a Class I hitch can only safely handle up to 2 bikes when using a rack. • Curt has recently changed their stance on requiring the # 18050 stabilizing strap. At one time, using the strap was a requirement for their warranty, but that is no longer the case. The strap is no longer required.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack to Carry eBike with a 2016 Toyota Prius
  • While it is true that there are no 2" trailer hitch receivers available for your 2016 Toyota Prius, I still have a solution for you to transport your 60 lb eBike. I recommend using the Class I Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11473 because it has the reinforced collar on it. You do have to use a support strap like part # 18050 for a bike rack. Since you are wanting to carry a 60 lb bike with a Class I trailer hitch though I think this is a good idea whether the Curt warranty required it...

  • How to Mount The Curt C56353 On The Receiver Tube on 2017 Toyota Prius
  • Yes. As long as you can fit the 4 way flat connector through the grommet, that will be possible. To mount the connector I recommend that you use a mounting bracket to give the installation a cleaner look. If you've got a Draw-Tite Hitch like # 24966 you can use the Mounting Bracket for 4 Flat # 18144 or if you have a Curt Hitch like the # C11473 you can use the Curt Easy Mount # C58002 .

  • Will the Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack Part # S64650 Clear the Rear Bumper on a 2017 Toyota Prius
  • The Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack part # S64650 has a distance of 10-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the first wheel hoop. This will be sufficient for the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch part # 24966 which only requires 7" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of you bumper. However, if you have the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11473 then you will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of you bumper as...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2017 Toyota Prius
  • The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2017 Prius is the Draw-Tite # 24966. This is a class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I recommend this hitch over the Curt Hitch # C11473 because any non-trailer loads used in the Curt hitch requires the use of a stabilizing strap like part # 18050. It can be tough finding a location to attach the strap. The installation is similar for both of these hitches as they use the same attach points on the vehicle frame. Both of...

  • Will Kuat Beta 2 Bike Rack Fit Curt Hitch on a 2016 Prius 4 Touring
  • The Kuat Beta part # B202-114 would have no problem fitting the Curt hitch part # C11473. The distance the Beta has from the hitch pin hole to the upright mast of the rack would be more than needed to clear the bumper of your Prius. Curt requires the use of their stabilizer strap part # 18050 when using their hitch to carry a non-supported load like a bike rack. I attached a review video for you to check for the strap as well.

  • Trailer Hitch for a Bike Rack on a 2016 Toyota Prius
  • We do have a trailer hitch that fits the 2016 Toyota Prius (not the c or V models). It is Curt trailer hitch # C11473. I have included a link to the installation details for you. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050...

  • Which Hitch for 2018 Toyota Prius Weighs the Least
  • It's not by much but the Draw Tite hitch # 24966 for your 2018 Toyota Prius weighs the least at 21 lbs whereas the Curt # C11473 weighs 23. I really like the look of the Draw Tite as only the hitch opening hangs below the rear bumper. I know some Prius owners are super concerned about anything that might hurt fuel mileage which may be why you are asking about weight, but with only the hitch opening hanging below you'd have the least amount of potential wind resistance there as well.

  • Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendation for 2018 Toyota Prius
  • The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2018 Toyota Prius is the Draw Tite part # 24966 because unlike the Curt hitch # C11473 which fits also it does not require the use of a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a cargo carrier. Then for a cargo carrier I recommend the Reese part # 63155 because it has a rise in the shank for better ground clearance, has a mesh floor and higher railing which allows it to easily secure cargo of varying sizes.

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Toyota Prius That Doesnt Require Stabilizer Strap
  • For your 2018 Toyota Prius we have the Draw Tite hitch part # 24966 which is a confirmed fit and does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a bike rack unlike the Curt hitch part # C11473 which is also a fit for your 2018 Toyota Prius. Because of that I recommend the Draw Tite. For a lightweight platform bike rack I really like the Saris Freedom Superclamp # SA4025F. This is a lightweight platform rack (which is normally an unheard of combo). That means it'll be easy to install...

  • Will the Yakima HangOut fit 2015 Acura MDX and 2017 Toyota Prius Prime?
  • The Yakima HangOut # Y02638 is a confirmed fit for your 2015 Acura MDX, but will not fit on a 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, nor will any other trunk-mounted rack. In order to transport bikes with the Prius, you could install Curt hitch # C11473 and use a hitch-mounted rack like the Rhino-Rack # RRRBC045. As for the straps, you are going to want to use all six with the Yakima HangOut # Y02638 to get the most secure fit on your Acura. The Yakima FullBack # Y02633, as you mentioned, only uses...

  • Will the Rola TX-102 Work with the Curt Hitch C11473 on a 2018 Toyota Prius Prime
  • There will not be any rubbing between the rear bumper of your 2018 Toyota Prius Prime and the Rola TX-102 2-Bike Rack part # 59400 while using the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11473. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear edge of the bumper with the Curt hitch installed on your Prius is 2" whereas the distance from the center of the hitch pin to the upright post on the Rola bike rack is 10-3/4". Therefore, you will have 8-3/4" of clearance between the rear...
