Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Mazda CX-3

Speaker 1: Today in this 2017 Mazda CX-3, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11418.First thing you'll notice about this hitch is that it's completely hidden behind our fascia. The only part you'll see hanging down is the receiver itself. This gives us a very clean look just like the factory hitch would. On the side of our receiver, you'll find our 1/2" diameter hitch pinhole to secure our hitch-mounted accessories. On the end of our receiver, you find this collar that's welded on, giving us a nice clean look and to help improve the strength of the receiver opening. Welded onto the bottom are our tubular steel safety chain loops, and these are quite nice because even though this is a Class I hitch and they are kind of small, you can still easily clip on even a very large hook like this one. This hitch features a 200-pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 2,000-pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull. You want to make sure you consult the owner's manual of your CX-3 and not exceed what the vehicle's rated for.

Go by whichever number's less. One thing I would like to point out, if you are using this hitch for a non-trailer application, such as with a bike rack or a cargo carrier, Curt does require the use of a stabilization strap to help support the load. We have those available separately on our website. What I really like about this hitch is that the high gloss powder coat finish that we have is going to blend in with any color CX-3 quite nicely. It's not going to stick out. It's going to look like it came from the factory on your vehicle.

Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need. You're looking at about 11-1/2" from the ground to the top of the 1-1/4" receiver opening and about 5" from the center of the hitch pinhole to the rear-most part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we're going to put a strap in place to help support the weight of our exhaust since we have to lower it. I'm just going to wrap ours on our axles here. If your CX-3 is not all-wheel drive, you can just go to your lower control arms and it'll do the same thing.

Just put that right there, snug it up a little bit, and that'll hold the weight of our exhaust. On the side of our mufflers, we'll find two exhaust hangers. We have the same on each side. We'll spray a little lubricant on them so they'll slide off easier, and then we'll use a pry bar to pry them off. We'll do the same on the other side. We're looking at the passenger side of the frame rail now.

On each side we'll find two 17mm nuts. We need to remove both of these nuts on each side. Make sure we hang onto them because we will be reusing them. We'll do the same on the other side. Now on each side by our exhaust kit out, we have a plastic pushpin fastener that we need to remove. We'll use a flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool and we'll work the center section down carefully. Then we can pull out the whole clip. We'll do the same on both sides. All right. Now we can take our hitch and we'll raise it up, and the two holes on the sides will go over the studs that have the nuts that we removed. With it in place, we'll loosely thread on the nuts that we removed. On our passenger side, we need to install our hardware where our tow hook is. We'll have this spacer that'll go between the tow hook and the hitch. Then we'll have a carriage bolt, which will go through the hitch and into that spacer, and then on the other side, we'll cap off the bolt with our flange nut. With all of our hardware in place, we can now snug it down. With all of our hardware now snugged down, we'll torque it to the amount specified in the instructions. Now we'll reinstall our pushpins in the fascia. Now we'll raise the exhaust back up, reinstall our hangers. With our exhaust back in place, we'll take down our strap. That completes our look at and showing you how to install Curt Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11418, on this 2017 Mazda CX-3.

Fit my vehicle perfectly. Video instructions were spot on. Easy to install. I did add some steel strapping that I got at the hardware store to replace the body support. Used some plastic to keep it from rubbing against the hitch. Glued it in place. Finished with a bit of paint to prevent corrosion. Plan is to mount the bicycle rack to the hitch. I did purchase the support strap, not pictured. 562523

Thanks for the follow up. I did receive the package. The installation went fairly well. The on-line installation videos are excellent. For the CX3 Mazda 2017 I don't think the washer provided is the correct thickness. Even after the correct torque (95 foot pounds) the washer is a little loose, I think because the tow hook for the 2017 may be a little different than the 2016. Anyway that's not a big deal. I'll just add a metal shim. Thanks again. Looking forward to purchase a bike hitch rack from etrailer. 467249

2016 Mazda CX-3

Easy install on 2016 Mazda CX-3 Looks great, all you see is the actual receiver hitch Use for Kuat bike rack 282994

Update: I had to replace the Curt receiver as it flexed and bent causing the bike rack to begin ping down. Curt recommends a supporting strap that just isnt practical on my car due to spoiler. I ordered the DrawTite hitch which is a much beefier design and I am not experiencing the same issues. I would highly recommend the DrawTite hitch over the Curt. To be fair, Ive had Curt products before and they performed well. Just in this case I feel the DrawTite is a superior product.

  • Best Looking Trailer Hitch for 2018 Mazda CX-3
Between the two hitches that fit your 2018 Mazda CX-3 the Curt, part # C11418, is tucked under the rear bumper by about an inch more than the Draw-Tite, part # 24933. Although I feel like the Curt is still more obvious to the eye because it has the thick outer collar around the receiver opening. I've attached pictures of them both installed so you can see the difference. Additionally, a hitch that sits closer to the bumper's edge is generally considered better for bike racks so the...

  • Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for Towing a Trailer with a 2019 Mazda CX3
The best hitch option for your 2019 Mazda CX3 is Curt hitch part # C11418. Both the Draw-Tite and Curt option for the Mazda are Class I options and can handle up to 200 lbs of tongue weight. I recommend the Curt hitch because installation takes less time compared to the Draw-Tite option. The Curt hitch hardware is easier to access when it is time to torque down the bolts during installation. I have attached an installation video of the Curt hitch on a 2017 Mazda CX-3. The Curt option...

  • Does Curt Still Require Stabilizer Strap When Carrying Hitch Mounted Accessories
Actually Curt stopped requiring the stabilizer straps with bike racks and other non-supported hitch accessories with their hitches like the # C11418 that fits your 2019 Mazda CX-3. It was an extra precaution they took back in the day but recently found it's not needed.

  • Comparison of Curt or Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver for Carrying Bikes on a 2016 Mazda CX-3
Both the Curt # C11418 and Draw-Tite # 24933 trailer hitch receivers install into the same location as each other on your 2016 Mazda CX-3. However, the Draw-Tite does not require the use of the support strap # 18050 like the Curt does. Both racks are Class I, 1-1/4 inch hitch receivers so I doubt you will have a much different ride using the Draw-Tite instead of the Curt. Have you tried an anti-rattle device on the bike rack? If you can tell me the make and model of the bike rack...

  • What Supports Bumper Fascia After Curt Trailer Hitch is Installed on a 2016 Mazda CX-3
With Curt hitch # C11418 installed on a 2016 Mazda CX-3 the lower fascia is still attached elsewhere on the vehicle and it will also be resting on top of the hitch receiver. There isn't room to replace the brackets that were removed to install the hitch. It does not appear to be an issue with Draw-Tite hitch # 24933 and I have linked that video for you as well. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory...

  • Troubleshooting Bike Rack Weight Bending Class I Curt Hitch Down
Were you using the required stabilizer strap part # 18050 when carrying your Kuat NV part # NV12G with the Curt hitch part # C11418? Curt requires you use this strap to basically help prevent the weight from damaging the hitch and vehicle like you were experiencing. Also, were you driving on any rough roads? You should note that none of the hitches or racks we offer will be able to withstand any off-roading. At this point though your frame is damaged to the point I would not recommend installing...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Mazda CX-3
Curt trailer hitch # C11418 is a fit for the 2018 Mazda CX-3. I have linked a video showing an example installation on a 2016 and the process will be basically the same on your 2018. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap #...

The available hitches for the 2019 CX-3 are the 1-1/4-inch size like # 90092 but they are lighter-duty Class I hitches. There are not any Class II hitches for your car. The available Class I hitches are Draw-Tite # 24933 and Curt # C11418. Between these two I recommend the USA-made Curt # C11418 because it will be easier to install.
