Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Honda HR-V

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Honda HRV we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class One Custom Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number is C11416.So, here's what our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. The cross tube is going to sit just right below the bumper and it is going to be visible, but the main thing we're going to see is that receiver tube sticking out.All right. Just going to give us an inch and a quarter by an inch and a quarter receiver tube opening, so it's going to be great for bike racks and some smaller cargo carriers. The way we're going to mount all of our accessories to the hitch pit hole here on the side, and it is going to accept a standard half inch pinning clip, and while these aren't included in the kit, you can pick them up here at etrailer.com.Now if you do plan on doing some light duty towing, our safety chain connection points are going to be a plate style welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. And as you can see, we're not going to have too much trouble getting most side hooks on or off.As far as the weight capacity goes, our hitch is going to have a 200 pound tongue weight, which is the maximum downward pressure at the receiver tube. It's also going to have a 2,000 pound gross trailer rate rating, which is the amount it can pull including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it.

With those numbers in mind you should always double check your Honda's owner's manual, and never exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight. Now, Curt does recommend using a safety strap when carrying any non trailer loads, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier.Like to give you a few measurements, and that's going to help you whenever you're looking at accessories for your hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper should be right about three inches. That measurement's going to come in handy when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have adequate clearance, and that it's not going to come in contact with the rear bumper. From the ground to the inside top hitch of the receiver tube opening is going to be right about 13 inches. At that height I would recommend a cargo carrier or a bike rack with a raised shank, that way we get a little bit more ground clearance. So now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features let's show you how to get it installed. At the beginning of our installation we're going to come at the back of our HRV, and if you have a front wheel drive model and we had this under body plastic panel here, we're going to have to trim a section out on the driver's side.Already went ahead and marked out the area that we're going to need to trim, and you'll find a diagram in your instructions. Now, you can either use a utility knife or some kind of cutting tool, but you just want to make sure you take your time and make as clean of cuts as you can.

I'm going to be using a rotary tool, you just want to be careful, again, taking your time. We always come back and clean off all the excess plastic. If we look up into the hole we just cut out we can see the frame. We're going to see we're going to have a small hole towards the back of our HRV and a larger one towards the front. The small one is going to be one of our mounting locations, and we're going to need to fish wire our hardware in place. Now, we're going to have two carriage bolts, and you'll notice that one of them is going to be just a little bit longer.

You want to make sure you put the long bolt on the driver's side, and the short one on the passenger side.In order to get to the access point for our mounting locations on the passenger side we're going to need to lower the exhaust down. The end of the muffler here, we're going to have two of these rubber isolators, one on each side. And to help relieve those we're going to take a little bit of spray lubricant and we're going to spray directly on the hanger. The one towards the center you're going to want to remove the rubber isolator directly off the muffler, but leave it up top. Because once we get the hitch in we're going to have a little bit of limited space. So it will be a little bit easier to get back on if we take it off the bottom.

Just take a pry bar and we're going to pry against the rubber isolator. We'll do the same thing for the one on the outside of the muffler.Once both of the rubber isolators are off we can let our exhaust come down. Now, you'll see that same mounting location on the passenger side here in the same large access hole. Now, sometimes the hitch doesn't have enough room between the mounting location and the exhaust here, so we can either cut this, or we can just take our exhaust shield, and we're just going to bend it and fold it back over directly on itself, that way it's not going to be hitting the muffler, but it will give us a little bit of room here so that the hitch can sit directly against the frame. And if you can't do it by hand you can take a pair of pliers and bend it over. Now we can get ready to put our hardware in place. We'll start by taking our fish wire with the coiled end going in to mounting location. And I always like to put a little bend in it, it will help guide it through the frame a little bit. And we're going to be feeding this back through the frame until we can get it to come out the large hole that's towards the front. Sometimes it will help if you put your finger in, partially grab the wire, and help guide it down. Now it's important that we leave both ends outside of the frame. We can always put a bend in the other side, that way it doesn't fall in the frame and we lose the wire. Then we're going to take a square hole spacer block, slide it over the coiled end, and then since we're on the passenger side we'll grab the short carriage bolt and we'll thread it onto the end of the wire. And we're going to want to feed each piece into the frame one at a time, and we're going to pull on our wire until the bolt will drop down through. Now we're going to repeat that on the other side as well. Now with an extra set of hands we're going to lift our hitch up, we're going to take our pole wires, and we're going to drop them down from the top of our hitch going through. Make sure that they come down through the hitch. We're going to remove one of our pole wires, and we're going to grab a seven sixteenth nut, we're going to make sure to get one on each side so we don't have to worry about it falling down. Now in the center of our hitch here we're going to have these two holes that are going to be right below that tow hook. We're going to take our U bolt, we're going to go around the tow hook, and drop the bolts down so it comes down through those two holes. This is going to be a little bit of a tight fit just because everything's already in place. But you want the two sides to come down while it's still straddling that hook on top. And we'll take two more seven sixteenth flange nuts and get those in place. We're going to come back with an eleven sixteenth socket and we'll tighten up all of our hardware. You want to make sure you come back with a torque wrench, and we're going to torque all of our hardware down in a specified amount in the instructions. We're going to raise our exhaust back up, and if you're having a little bit of trouble getting them seated all the way you can always put a little bit more spray lubricate on there, it will help slide it in place a little bit easier. This hanger, because of the limited space we have, it may be easier if you take a flat blade screwdriver and pry down on the rubber isolator so we can get to hook around the exhaust. That will finish up your look at the Curt Class One Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11416, on our 2017 Honda HRV.

Great product! Fit perfectly with my HR-V AWD (didn't even have to bend the heat shield). Video was VERY helpful and I was able to install the receiver within 30 minutes without even using a jack! 574578

This hitch was for our new Honda HR-V. We had to wait for about a week for etrailer.com to receive it from the manufacturer (Curt). George J at etrailer kept me up to date on the progress of the order and shipped it out as soon as they received it. Installation was very easy and took about 20 minutes to complete. But, the best part is etrailer.com sold this hitch for about $110 less than all other dealers of the exact same product. etrailer.com is the best for price, shipping, service and communications. 213457

Great product, and very well planned installation on a brand new HR-V. The video indicated I would have to bend the muffler heat shield a little, but I installed that bolt/side first and let it lever the room it needed (practically none). I would say that getting inboard rear muffler isolation mount back on would be tough for a lot of people, as it was a tight space and required a great deal of prying - muffler backwards and rubber mount downwards. I also purchased an adapter to go from 1-1/4" to a 2" receiver with a 4-1/2" rise, and this made using my existing 2" flat rack and bike rack immediately usable on this vehicle. The measurements suggested it would be a close fit, and the adapter was either just touching the plastic bumper (we don't want rub marks!), or about a 1/16" away from it. I ground off about 1/8" from the top tapered down about 3/4" and it's perfect. 314930

Shipped fast. Instructions ok. Feedback is to tell rookies to leave rubber muffler hanger, the one closest to middle, on the upper hook and only unhook from the muffler hook , otherwise after installing the hitch one cant re-hook the rubber on the upper hanger as it is blocked by the hitch. Also, the passenger side fish wiring was harder due I think to a bigger rail and or something causing wire to travel up and unable to see in bolt hole. Used electr. wire thru small bolt hole back to bigger hole then taped to fishwire and pulled thru easily. Really though it was fairly easy and fit well looks good and low profile. 214383

Still like it. Would suggest thinking about second hitch pin hole so canpush deeper in, more stable

Man, that was easy. It took me about 20 minutes. The video was spot on and straight forward. Had a 2nd hand to hold it up while I started the nuts onto the bolts. Hardest part was re-hanging the exhaust. (Use lube and a pry bar). This was on an AWD so no trimming. 311140

There was a bit if a delay in shipping due to Curt being overwhelmed by orders. They were the first to offer a hitch for the 2016 Honda HR-V. I was kept well informed by etrailer with multiple progress e-mails. I installed the hitch myself and it fit perfectly. The included instructions were a bit blurry but I already downloaded a copy from their website that was crystal clear. I would highly recommend etrailer to anyone in need of a hitch! 216820

To John G.: I had the hitch installed on my 2016 HRV by a local shop that has a car-lift. The shop had to remove the plastic splash under-carriage panel to install the hitch and were not able to re-mount this panel after installing the hitch. I think because the access to the panels fittings being blocked by the hitch. Did you experience the same situation? I dont want to trash that plastic splash / under carriage panel until I know it definitely cannot be installed if the hitch is properly installed.

I needed a hitch for my bike rack and this looked to be just the ticket. I was aware that the muffler would need to be lowered in order to fit the hitch. I jacked up the rear passenger wheel and put it on a concrete block to give me about 4 extra inches of clearance to work with. The drivers side wheel was on the ground. Getting the rubber muffler mounts off was the most difficult part of the installation. After much cursing trying to push the rubber mounts off I pushed a fine flat blade screwdriver between the rubber and steel mounts and lubricated with dish soap - voila - off they came. Leave the innermost rubber attached to the car, the outer most to the muffler - they go back on very easily that way. You do not need to bend the heat shield, the hitch will slide under it. I was a bit dubious about cutting the plastic tray for the driver side mount but here's how i did it. 18mm socket to undo the 4 plastic bolts - then 10mm to get the small bolt on the driver side and a philips screwdriver to get the two screws out by the rear bumper on the drivers side. - Measure carefully and mark the area to cut away - mine was about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide - I used a spiral saw on my Dremel and sanded the cut edge smooth. I then remounted the plastic tray before attaching the hitch. The supplied fishing wires worked great and it was easy to get the bolts into the holes in the frame. start with the passenger side making sure not to trap the rubber muffler mount - then do the u-bolt on the tow point then the driver side frame bolt - torque them all up and put the muffler back on - the outside rubber goes back onto the car very easily the inner on is a bit harder but soap helps. Took me about an hour total - most of which was repeated measuring and marking before I cut the rear underbody plastic tray. All in all a nice product and it looks really neat. 370603

No problems at all with the hitch. Its easy to get my bike rack on and off the car and to mount and unmount my bike rack and is very secure. Carried 2 bikes on a 4000 mile road trip without any issues. The hitch is very unobtrusive when not in use. I would appreciate any other users feedback on the suitability of this hitch for a small trailer for hauling stuff from the DIY stores - i.e. Ball fittings and wiring harness extensions suitable for the HR-V

Thanks of for the follow-up John. Since this hitch is a Class 1 the manufacturer's recommended ball mount is required, which is part # C45521
Curt Class II Drawbar - 2-5/8" Rise, 3-1/4" Drop - 7-1/4" Long - 3,500 lbs
$22.75
. For a wiring harness I would recommend the Tekonsha wiring harness # 118673
T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector
$37.99
. I have included links to these products and an informational article for your reference. Additionally please note that Curt also recommends the use of a stabilizing strap # 10850 when using no trailer loads with your hitch for extra support.

Solid looking and feeling hitch. Instructions were easy to follow and this 72 year old successfully installed and had some fun doing it. I believe most will need a second set of hands to thread the first nut, but after that all goes quite well. The receiver tucks nicely under the rear bumper and the final appearance is one of factory installation. A very well made product in my opinion. 539200

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Weight of Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitches for 2016 Honda HR-V
  • The Curt Class I hitch, part # C11416 weighs right at 25 lbs, while the Draw-Tite # 24932 weighs a bit less at 23 lbs. Both hitches have identical capacities and would install in the same manner. If you're planning on using the hitch as a mounting point for a bike rack or a cargo carrier (and you probably are), I'd recommend the Draw-Tite model. Curt's warranty requirements state that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 must be used for all non-trailer loads. The strap is an extra...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Honda HR-V
  • Both the Draw-Tite # 24932 and Curt # C11416 Class I trailer hitches are custom fit for your 2017 Honda HR-V and will provide the same 200 pound tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pound towing weight capacity. They will have a similar installation process that will not require any drilling, however the exhaust will need to be temporarily lowered. One of the main differences between the two trailer hitches, and why I recommend the Draw-Tite # 24932, is that for the Curt hitch, you will...

Reason being this hitch does not require the use of a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack like the Curt part # C11416 does. For a bike rack the Draw Tite is the way to go. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. • Tailer Hitch for 2016 Honda HR-V
  • There are indeed hitches available. I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class I hitch, part # 24932 if you were needing the hitch to provide an attachment point for a hitch mounted accessory like a bike rack or cargo carrier. If you'll also be doing some light duty towing, you'll also need a ball mount, trailer wiring harness part # 118673, a 1-7/8 inch trailer ball # 19256 or a 2 inch ball, part # 19258. For a locking hitch pin, use part # RH2-XL.

  • The Swagman Trailhead # S63360 will fit 1-1/4 and 2 inch trailer hitches. For your 2018 Honda HR-V the available hitches, # 24932 and # C11416, are both 1-1/4 inch Class I hitches. So the bike rack will fit. However, since the hitches are both Class I that means you will be limited to 2 bikes even if the rack can hold more. The issue is not the weight but instead how far that weight is from the hitch receiver. It would put too much stress on the hitch causing damage to it and the vehicle. To...

  • Ball Mount with 4 or 5 Inch Rise for a 1-1/4 Inch on a 2016 Honda HR-V
  • For the available trailer hitches for your 2016 Honda HR-V the recommended ball mount for the Draw-Tite hitch # 24932 is # 3593 which is 6-5/8 inches long from pin hole to ball hole. And for the Curt hitch # C11416 the recommended ball mount is # C45521 which is 7-1/4 inches long. So as far as length goes the average on the recommended mounts is about 7 inches but it can be longer. The rise on these recommended ball mounts isn't enough though. For a 4 inch rise you could use # 3594....

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Options for a 2016 Honda HR-V
  • I do have a trailer hitch that is a confirmed fit for your 2016 Honda HR-V but they do not make a 2" reciever for this vehicle. Instead, you will need to choose from either the Draw-Tite hitch part # 24932 or the Curt hitch part # C11416. Both of these options are a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. If you can tell me what you would be using the hitch for I would be glad to provide you with additional recommendations but in the meantime I have attached an install video...

  • Does Curt Hitch # C11416 Have Capacity to Tow 900 lb Trailer
  • The Curt hitch part # C11416 that you referenced has a 2,000 lb trailer towing capacity. It would easily handle the weight of 900 lb tear trailer like you have. You'll want to check the owners manual of your HR-V to determine the vehicle towing capacities and be sure to abide by them as well.

  • Trailer Hitch & Bike and Cargo Carrier Options for 2017 Honda HR-V
  • The only type of hitch offered for your 2017 Honda HR-V is the 1-1/4-inch light-duty Class I type. I am not aware of any 2-inch hitches for this vehicle. I checked directly with both Draw-Tite and Curt and neither shows a 2-inch hitch fit for the 2017 HR-V, only parts # 24932 and # C11416. Class I hitches are limited to carrying 2 bikes maximum (even if the bike rack can hold more than two) due to the leverage applied to the hitch tube and the car frame to which it will be mounted.
