Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Honda HR-V - Curt

Today on 2016 Honda HR-V, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Curt Class I trailer hitch receiver, part number C11416. Here's what's this hitch is going to look like once it's installed on the vehicle. As you can see, it maintains a pretty clean look to where it's nicely tucked up against the fascia on the underside there. It doesn't come too far out, but it does come out far enough to make sure you'll have plenty of clearance with just about any type of accessories you may want to put in here. Features the 1/2 inch hitch pinhole in order to secure any accessories that you may want to put in there, and it's got the 1-1/4 by 1-1/4 inch receiver tube opening with nice reinforcement collar to help give it that nice clean look, but also help reinforce to make sure it's sturdy here. It's got the steel plate-style safety chain connection point with good-size opening, so the majority of your safety chains, you should be able to get connected in here without really any problem. It mounts up with 3 attachment points, 2 on either frame rail, and 1 to the factory tow hook that's right on the underside here, and it's a pretty straightforward, easy installation. This hitch features a 200-pound max tongue weight rating and 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating.

You do want to be sure to check the owner's manual to see that your vehicle's capable of that type of weight. Overall, I like the clean look that this hitch maintains while still giving you plenty of room and good usability for any type of accessories that you may want to put in here. When using this hitch with all non-trailer loads, such as bike racks or cargo carriers, Curt does require the use of a stabilization strap. We have those available on our site, part number 18050. Now, let's give you some measurements to help assist you with your selection of hitch mounted accessories, such as bike racks and cargo carriers. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the rear bumper is about 3-1/2 inches, and the distance from the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13-1/4 inches. Now, let's show you how to install this hitch.

First thing we're going to need to do to begin our installation is we're going to need to trim out a section on the driver's side of this under-body panel, and I've already got it marked here according to the instructions. We're going to have to this because this one's a front wheel drive model, but the all wheel drive models do not have this cover under here on the back. Then now, we've got access to our attachment point right there that we'll have a carriage bolt coming down through. Now, on the passenger side, in order to gain access to the attachment point, we're going to need to let this exhaust hang down, and we'll have to remove the hangers from the rubber isolators up there. I'm going to put a little bit of penetrating spray on there to help assist with the removal. That will just make it a little bit easier.

We've got two hangers on either side back here. If those two don't give us enough room to let the exhaust hang, there's one more further up that we'll be able to take down. I'll use a pry bar in order to begin pushing that off of there, and I can just get it off the rest of the way by hand. I'll do the same thing over here. As you can see, just those two hangers let's it drop down far enough that we'll have access to that hole. On this passenger side, in order for that hitch to properly seat all the way up against the frame rail there, we're going to need to take this heat shield and just bend it back and little bit, approximately 3/4 of an inch.

You can do that by hand, or you can use a pair of pliers, if you'd like. Now, with the kit comes two carriage bolts, and as you can see, they're different lengths. We need to make sure that the longer one goes on the driver's side, so over here, we'll be installing the shorter one. We'll be sending our coil bend up through the hole that will be our attachment point, and we want it to come out the access hole that's right here in the frame rail. Then once that's pulled through, we can slide on our square hole spacer, and then our shorter carriage bolt. Then we'll slide those up into the frame and gently pull them through so that it comes down through that hole, which is our attachment point. We'll do that same thing on the driver's side, just with the longer carriage bolt. Now we can take this 7/16 U-bolt and hang it over our tow hook there. Now, with a second set of hands, we'll put the hitch up into place, and we'll get it started just with our U-bolt. Then we'll get two of the 7/16 nuts started onto that U-bolt to hold it in place while we get the rest of our hardware through and started. All the hardware's 7/16 of an inch, so all the flange nuts are going to be the same. Then we can get the rest of our hardware started. Now, using an 11/16 socket, we can begin to tighten up our hardware. Now, once all of our hardware is tightened, we can go back and make sure that it's torqued down to the specification listed in the instructions. Now we can reinstall our exhaust. A little tip for you, if you're having a problem getting this hanger that's closer toward the center of the vehicle back on, sometimes you can use a little flat head screwdriver or small pry bar, in order to help pry that down and get it into position. That's going to complete our look at and installation of the Curt Class-1 trailer hitch receiver, part number C11416, on our 2016 Honda HR-V.

I needed a hitch for my bike rack and this looked to be just the ticket. I was aware that the muffler would need to be lowered in order to fit the hitch. I jacked up the rear passenger wheel and put it on a concrete block to give me about 4 extra inches of clearance to work with. The drivers side wheel was on the ground. Getting the rubber muffler mounts off was the most difficult part of the installation. After much cursing trying to push the rubber mounts off I pushed a fine flat blade screwdriver between the rubber and steel mounts and lubricated with dish soap - voila - off they came. Leave the innermost rubber attached to the car, the outer most to the muffler - they go back on very easily that way. You do not need to bend the heat shield, the hitch will slide under it. I was a bit dubious about cutting the plastic tray for the driver side mount but here's how i did it. 18mm socket to undo the 4 plastic bolts - then 10mm to get the small bolt on the driver side and a philips screwdriver to get the two screws out by the rear bumper on the drivers side. - Measure carefully and mark the area to cut away - mine was about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide - I used a spiral saw on my Dremel and sanded the cut edge smooth. I then remounted the plastic tray before attaching the hitch. The supplied fishing wires worked great and it was easy to get the bolts into the holes in the frame. start with the passenger side making sure not to trap the rubber muffler mount - then do the u-bolt on the tow point then the driver side frame bolt - torque them all up and put the muffler back on - the outside rubber goes back onto the car very easily the inner on is a bit harder but soap helps. Took me about an hour total - most of which was repeated measuring and marking before I cut the rear underbody plastic tray. All in all a nice product and it looks really neat. 370603

Shipped fast. Instructions ok. Feedback is to tell rookies to leave rubber muffler hanger, the one closest to middle, on the upper hook and only unhook from the muffler hook , otherwise after installing the hitch one cant re-hook the rubber on the upper hanger as it is blocked by the hitch. Also, the passenger side fish wiring was harder due I think to a bigger rail and or something causing wire to travel up and unable to see in bolt hole. Used electr. wire thru small bolt hole back to bigger hole then taped to fishwire and pulled thru easily. Really though it was fairly easy and fit well looks good and low profile. 214383

There was a bit if a delay in shipping due to Curt being overwhelmed by orders. They were the first to offer a hitch for the 2016 Honda HR-V. I was kept well informed by etrailer with multiple progress e-mails. I installed the hitch myself and it fit perfectly. The included instructions were a bit blurry but I already downloaded a copy from their website that was crystal clear. I would highly recommend etrailer to anyone in need of a hitch! 216820

To John G.: I had the hitch installed on my 2016 HRV by a local shop that has a car-lift. The shop had to remove the plastic splash under-carriage panel to install the hitch and were not able to re-mount this panel after installing the hitch. I think because the access to the panels fittings being blocked by the hitch. Did you experience the same situation? I dont want to trash that plastic splash / under carriage panel until I know it definitely cannot be installed if the hitch is properly installed.

Great product, and very well planned installation on a brand new HR-V. The video indicated I would have to bend the muffler heat shield a little, but I installed that bolt/side first and let it lever the room it needed (practically none). I would say that getting inboard rear muffler isolation mount back on would be tough for a lot of people, as it was a tight space and required a great deal of prying - muffler backwards and rubber mount downwards. I also purchased an adapter to go from 1-1/4" to a 2" receiver with a 4-1/2" rise, and this made using my existing 2" flat rack and bike rack immediately usable on this vehicle. The measurements suggested it would be a close fit, and the adapter was either just touching the plastic bumper (we don't want rub marks!), or about a 1/16" away from it. I ground off about 1/8" from the top tapered down about 3/4" and it's perfect. 314930

This hitch was for our new Honda HR-V. We had to wait for about a week for etrailer.com to receive it from the manufacturer (Curt). George J at etrailer kept me up to date on the progress of the order and shipped it out as soon as they received it. Installation was very easy and took about 20 minutes to complete. But, the best part is etrailer.com sold this hitch for about $110 less than all other dealers of the exact same product. etrailer.com is the best for price, shipping, service and communications. 213457

Man, that was easy. It took me about 20 minutes. The video was spot on and straight forward. Had a 2nd hand to hold it up while I started the nuts onto the bolts. Hardest part was re-hanging the exhaust. (Use lube and a pry bar). This was on an AWD so no trimming. 311140

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Honda HR-V for Carrying Bike Rack
  • For your 2017 Honda HR-V the hitch to use is the Draw Tite part # 24932. Reason being this hitch does not require the use of a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack like the Curt part # C11416 does. For a bike rack the Draw Tite is the way to go. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. We asked our demo and install guys to name their favorite, most easy-to-use bike racks and...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Honda HR-V
  • Both the Draw-Tite # 24932 and Curt # C11416 Class I trailer hitches are custom fit for your 2017 Honda HR-V and will provide the same 200 pound tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pound towing weight capacity. They will have a similar installation process that will not require any drilling, however the exhaust will need to be temporarily lowered. One of the main differences between the two trailer hitches, and why I recommend the Draw-Tite # 24932, is that for the Curt hitch, you will...

  • Weight of Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitches for 2016 Honda HR-V
  • The Curt Class I hitch, part # C11416 weighs right at 25 lbs, while the Draw-Tite # 24932 weighs a bit less at 23 lbs. Both hitches have identical capacities and would install in the same manner. If you're planning on using the hitch as a mounting point for a bike rack or a cargo carrier (and you probably are), I'd recommend the Draw-Tite model. Curt's warranty requirements state that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 must be used for all non-trailer loads. The strap is an extra...

  • Tailer Hitch for 2016 Honda HR-V
  • There are indeed hitches available. I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class I hitch, part # 24932 if you were needing the hitch to provide an attachment point for a hitch mounted accessory like a bike rack or cargo carrier. If you'll also be doing some light duty towing, you'll also need a ball mount, trailer wiring harness part # 118673, a 1-7/8 inch trailer ball # 19256 or a 2 inch ball, part # 19258. For a locking hitch pin, use part # RH2-XL.

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Not Fitting Right on a 2016 Honda HR-V
  • For Curt trailer hitch # C11416 for the 2016 Honda HR-V if you have an all wheel drive model then there is no cover, lines, or fascia have to be removed, trimmed, or otherwise manipulated to install the trailer hitch. But on front wheel drive models there is a panel and in order to access the mounting points for the hitch that panel will need to be removed.

  • Why Stabilizing Straps for Curt Hitch and not Draw-Tite on 2017 Honda HR-V?
  • Curt requires stabilizing straps # 18050 on each of their Class I and II hitches, including the # C11416, and some of their Class III hitches with all non-trailer loads such as bike racks as a means to keep excessive movement of the accessories at bay. It is a warranty issue for Curt, and not a reflection on Draw-Tite hitches. In fact, we normally recommend going with the Draw-Tite option, which for a 2017 Honda HR-V would be # 24932, so customers can avoid having to deal with both the...

Since the hitches are Class I you will be limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch even if the bike rack can hold more. The issue is not the amount of weight but the distance of that weight from the receiver. What I recommend is to use a trunk mount bike rack that holds 3 bikes. If the kid's bike is small enough you might be able to put it...

So the bike rack will fit. However, since the hitches are both Class I that means you will be limited to 2 bikes even if the rack can hold more.
