Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Volkswagen Golf - Curt

Today on our 2016 VW Golf GTI, we're going to be taking a look at installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class 1. Part number C11412. This is what it's going to look like once it's installed. You can see it's got a nice high gloss black powder coat finish. It's going to be an inch and a quarter by an inch and a quarter square tube with a half inch hitch pin hole. This is a class one hitch.

It's going to allow for two hundred pounds of tongue weight, which is our downward force, and two thousand pounds of towing weight. Now you want to make sure your vehicle is actually ready to haul that much weight by checking with you owner's manual or your manufacturer. It's got a large flat safety chain loop, both sides. It's going to be a simple bolt on design by dropping your exhaust. You're going to use existing holes with some carriage bolts and plates on the inside of the frame. The hitch does come with a hitch pin and clip, but your draw bars are going to be sold separately. One note on a current hitch, if you're going to be carrying a non-wheeled load such as a cargo carrier or a bike rack, you want to make sure you use stabilization straps.

You can see it's going to tuck up very nice along the bottom side of our fascia on the back of our vehicle giving it that sleek and stylish look. Now our first step for our installation is we're going to have to lower our exhaust system down. We're going to put a safety strap underneath to help support our exhaust as we remove the brackets in the back. We're going to have one bolt on each side that's going to hold up our exhaust system. Take a thirteen millimeter socket and lower those down. Then we can slowly lower down our exhaust.

Now we're going to have two locations where we're going to have our bolts come through on either side to hold our hitch. We're going to have a half inch carriage bolt and a block that's going to fit up inside the frame. Now before we can put our bolt through, you want to check and make sure there's not a bunch of undercoat stuck in position there where the bolt's going to come through. You just take a scraper or a file and just clean out the inside of the hole so it'll slip through a little easier. We can take our fish wire and we're going to push it through the hole, and we'll pull it down out of there, we'll place on our black and thread it on our carriage bolt. We'll press our block up into place followed by our carriage bolt.

We'll use our fish wire attached. Our next one's going to be reverse fish wire, so we're going to slide our block on. We'll thread on our carriage bolt, then we're going to insert the bolt in first followed by the block and pull it right back through the same hole. Slip it inside and just push it back, slide up our block and we'll repeat this process for the other side. Now we'll get somebody to help us, second set of hands. We're going to push our fish wires through the bolt holes and feed our hitch up through. Take our flange nut, start it onto our bolt, do the same thing to the next bolt. You want to keep pressure on this just so it doesn't slip back up inside the hole. Just round them up finger tight for now and then take a look, make sure you got your hitch all centered up. Now to tighten up our bolts, we're going to use a nineteen millimeter socket. We'll repeat that for both sides. Now we can torque down our bolts to the specifications listed in our instructions, and we'll repeat that for the other side. Our last step is going to be tighten up our safety strap, put our exhaust back up into place, and we can reinstall our bolts. We can go ahead and re-secure our exhaust hangers and remove our safety strap. That's going to complete our installation. That's going to do it for our look at and install of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class 1, part number C11412 on our 2016 VW Golf GTI.

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • How To Use a 2 Inch Bike Rack On a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI
  • For starters, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver w/ Euro Drawbar part # C114122 is not a fit for your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI. The comparable option we have is Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24866. However, you cannot use a class I 1-1/4" trailer hitch with a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter like part # MT70032 because all of the adapters require a class II hitch with a 1-1/4" opening. If you were to use the two together the weight capacity of your trailer hitch will...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Ford Focus ST
  • For your 2017 Ford Focus ST hatchback the hitch you'll want is the Curt part # C11431 which has been confirmed as a fit, is made in the USA, and will install easily. The lowering kit shouldn't be an issue either from a fit point of view.

  • Which Curt Trailer Hitch Fits 2015 Volkswagen GTI
  • I double checked with Curt and the only hitch we can safely recommend for your 2015 Volkswagen GTI non Sportwagen is the part # C114122 which comes with the Euro ball mount. The part # C114222 would not be the correct hitch for you so I cannot recommend it. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # C59236 which I attached an install video for.

  • Trailer Hitch That Fits 2003 VW Jetta Wagon
  • You are smart to double check before making a purchase and while there is a high-quality trailer hitch and ball mount that fit your 2003 VW Jetta Wagon, the part # C114122 will not fit. What you need instead is the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11083 which is a fit for your '03 VW Jetta Wagon, something I confirmed for you with the manufacturer. For a ball mount the manufacturer recommends using the Curt Class II Drawbar # C45510. To secure the drawbar to your hitch will require the use of...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2001 VW Beetle
  • For your 2001 VW Beetle, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # C11066 is the correct fit as long as you don't have the Turbo. There is not a fit for the Turbo model. If you are using this hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier you will also need stabilization strap # 18050. If you don't want to be required by warranty to use that strap, then you can instead use the Draw-Tite # 24679. If you will be doing light towing, I recommend the Upgraded Circuit...

  • Trailer Hitch and Ball Mount Fit for 2015 Toyota Camry XSE
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver w/ Euro Drawbar # C114122 is not a fit for your 2015 Toyota Camry XSE. Instead you will want the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4" # C12107 which does come with the hardware. If you want the Euro Style ball mount # C45572 is the correct fit. Finally you will need a pin and clip # F-4 or a locking pin like # 1472DAT. For your trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118405...
