Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Honda Civic - Curt

Speaker 1: Today on our 2014 Honda Civic Si, we'll be having a look at, and installing, the Curt Class 1 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number: C11391. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, it's tucked up nice and tight up against our fascia here, giving us optimal ground clearance, but yet still have enough clearance around our receiver to make it an ideal hitch to use with bike racks and cargo carriers. On the side of our receiver you'll find our industry standard 1/2" diameter hitch pin hole to secure any of our hitch-mounted accessories. A pin and clip is included with this hitch. On the end of our receiver you'll find this nice collar here that's welded on to help reinforce the receiver opening and to give us a nice clean look on the back of the hitch. This hitch features a 200 pound max gross tongue weight reading, which is the amount forcing down, and a 2,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull.

You'll want to consult with the owner's manual of your Civic and not exceed what the vehicle is rated for. One thing I'd like to note, if we are planning to use this hitch for a non-trailer application, such as a bike rack or cargo carrier, Curt does require the use of a stabilization strap to help support the load. We have those available separately on our website as part number: 18050. Welded onto the bottom of our receiver is plate-style safety chain loops here. There's a decent size opening.

If our trailer is equipped with small chains, we should be able to hook onto these without a problem. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 12" from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, and about 6" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we need to remove this underbody panel here. There are several fasteners that hold it in place. Okay, in the side of it closest to the front of the car, we have three 10mm bolts that we need to remove.

On the back side of our panel, we have four plastic fasteners that we need to remove. The way that these work is, using a trim panel tool or a flathead screwdriver, and we'll pop out the center section. Once the center sections pop loose, the whole plug will come out. And on the driver's side of the vehicle, hidden in the mudflap, we have a fifth plastic fastener that we need to remove in order for the panel to come all the way out. Okay, once we have the one that's inside the mudflap removed, we can find the one that actually holds the panel in place hidden underneath the mudflap, right here.

With that released, the panel will come down and out of the way.Okay, now we need to lower our exhaust so we have access to our heat shield. In order to do that, we have an exhaust hanger here towards the front, another one here towards the back. We'll spray some lubricant on them so they'll slide off easier. Now we use a pry bar and we'll pry it off. Now we need to remove our exhaust heat shield. We'll have four bolts that are just like this one. They are 10mm.Okay, we're looking at our driver's side frame rail. Our passenger side will look very similar to this one. We have three holes we need to concern ourself with. This large one here is our access hole, and then our hitch hardware will go through the one that's closer to that, and then the next one closest to the rear. We'll take our fish wire, we'll go through the rearmost hole and it'll come out our access hole. Take our square spacer block, stick it on the fish wire, stick it inside the frame rail, thread our carriage bolt on, push it inside, and we'll pull it down. Remove the fish wire now. Now we'll take our handle nut, put a slight bend in it. We'll stick it through the access hole and then right over our hole right here. We'll do the same process for the other side. Now, for our recovery hook here in the middle, we'll slide our U-bolt on over that.Okay, this is our underbody panel. I've marked out in it the area we need to trim out according to the instructions, so we can actually have this back in place with the hitch installed. You can use a utility knife or scissors to cut this. I'm using a rotary tool because I feel like it's a little bit faster and I can make a cleaner cut. Okay, I marked out on our exhaust heat shield, the same area that we need to cut out. I'm using a pair of tin snips for it. Now, this is gonna have sharp edged after you cut it, so make sure you wear gloves while doing this. With our heat shield cut, we can reinstall it. We'll only be using three of the bolts because we cut out a section that had the fourth bolt in it.All right. Now we'll reinstall our underbody panel. Make sure our panel goes underneath our fascia like it's supposed to. Now, with an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch into position. On the driver's side, we'll just secure it with our hex nut. On the passenger side, we have to raise the hitch with the exhaust at the same time, and we use our hex nut to hold it in place. Okay, now we'll take our hex bolt and our large conical tooth washer, place it on the bolt. The teeth will face up towards the hitch, and we'll thread that into our handle nut. Okay, now we'll install the nuts on our U-bolts. Now we'll snug up our hardware. Our hex bolt here uses a 3/4" socket. Our hex nuts uses an 11/16" socket. For our U-bolt we'll use a 9/16" socket for the nuts. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. On the U-bolt, we want to make sure we tighten it as evenly as possible. All right. Now we'll reinstall our exhaust hanger. And that completes our look at, and installation of, the Curt Class 1 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number: C11391, on our 2014 Honda Civic Si.

2014 Honda Civic

I've installed a number of Curt hitches on various vehicles. My GMC Sierra and Ford Focus Wagon both have Curt hitches installed. This hitch went on a 2014 Civic LX sedan 5 speed. This install was a little bit more of a pain than ones I've done in the past. Also, I typically buy only Curt hitches due to my perception that Curt builds a higher quality unit and pays more attention to detail. This is the first time I've been disappointed in a Curt product. There was a lot of spatter and slag around the weld points on the hitch that was not ground down prior to paint. Curt just left it and painted over it. This is the 5th Curt hitch I've purchased, and the first time I've had one with quality control this lax. It would have taken someone 30 seconds to get rid of all that metal spatter from welding prior to painting, but they didn't bother. Shame on you, Curt. You used to pay attention to little stuff like this. It isn't a functional problem, but you can tell when you buy a quality product where they pay attention to detail, and in this case they dropped the ball. Anyway, on to the install. I trimmed the plastic underbody shield exactly as shown in the pics on the instructions, but it was still off a fair bit on the plastic part. I had to re-trim some of it once I got the hitch on the car. Not a big deal, but be prepared. I may order another plastic shield, measure it precisely, and retrim it to get the gap around the hitch as small as possible. It's a cheap part from Honda. As is, I only have maybe an inch or 1.5 inches of open space around the hitch. You could leave it alone. The bolts were a little tougher than usual to get fished through the frame rails and into the holes. This is due to the small amount of vertical clearance inside the frame rail to accomodate both the spacer block and the bolt. If you wiggle it around aggressively while threading it, it goes in pretty easy. If you just pull it, it doesn't want to go in real easy. Jiggle it around as you fish the bolt/backer plate in, should go right in. I didn't have to drill any holes to enlarge them on my '14 LX Civic Sedan. The service from etrailer was very good. I only deducted one star from the review due to the excessive amount of weld spatter all over the hitch itself. Like I said, my other 4 Curt hitches had this nicely ground down prior to powder coat. Curt has apparently cut this 30 second finishing step out of their process to save a buck. So, where you used to pay a little more for the Curt to get a more nicely finished unit, I would now say those days are over. You might as well buy the cheaper Draw Tite or Hidden Hitch in my opinion. You aren't getting anything any better with the Curt any more. 128436

Let me start off by saying that this is an excellent product. Installation was a breeze and it was a complete bolt on. No modifications was needed. I have a 2013 Honda Civic Si Coupe and the only issue I ran into during the install was the hitch hitting the exhaust hanger for the rear muffler. The only reason this happened was because I have an aftermarket exhaust system and I am using polyurethane exhaust hangers. These hangers are thicker than OEM. It still bolted right up with alittle tweaking. I also left the rear splash panel and heat shield off for now. If your running a stock exhaust hanger, you will not run into the issue I did. So don't let that steer you away, lol. Overall welds are great, and the construction is perfect. I would recommend this kit to anyone. 187309

After owning more than a few Curt hitches I was pleasantly surprised with the condition for which it arrived. Usually, I am breaking out the black paint and touching up all the paint scrapes that occur during shipment. Usually due to poor packaging. But this one came in pristine. Install was a little tricky on my 2014 Civic Si. Here a re few tips: You do not have to trim the heat shield as indicated and the muffler hanger is really close to the hitch. I thought at first it was not going to fit. All in all a nicely engineered product and the hitch is tucked away out of site and blends well with the Si's gloss black valence. 157010

can you post pics of the hitch installed on the vehicle. I want to see how much it shows. Also, does the exhaust hit the hitch on bumps or under heavy loads without trimming the heat shield?

Did you have to trim the under body panel?

@Rafael- the hitch barely shows. You only see the receiver box. The exhaust does not hit the hitch but it is very tight none the less. I switched to a Borla exhaust which eliminates the OEM muffler. When the tail pipe section is good and hot, it expands, althought it does not hit the hitch, it cause harmonic resonances and vibrates a bit at idle.@marcos i - No trimming

Trailer receiver and lock were receiver quickly and easily installed. The receiver worked great with my bike rack as I expected. Just completed riding from Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal Trail and the receiver definitely added to the enjoyment of the trip. 214720

I have used the hitch extensively over the past year predominantly to attach my bike rack. The hitch has worked very well and I am pleased with the ease of use.

Awesome hitch. Works as advertised. Installation took a little longer than expected due to a less than ideal installation scenario. This was done with no jack but a little flexibility and creative positioning will get the job done. Aviation shears would've helped too but I just used needle-nose pliers and bent the heat shield enough to "cut" through it and folded it back. The plastic shield did not need any modifications for my Civic. The hardest part in my opinion is lifting it into place due to its weight which would've definitely been easier with another hand. Also, getting the exhaust back on the muffler hanger after the hitch is in place proved to be fairly difficult as well. The E-trailer YouTube tutorial definitely helped a lot. As for the hitch itself, works with no issues and fit my 1 1/4" Yakima Holdup without issue. 214619

Perfect fit for my 2015 Civic SI coupe. Small modification to the muffler heat shield, a pair of descent size scissors will do the job. It's mainly used for hauling my bicycle around. Would highly recommend it. 347762

This was delivered yesterday, and I installed it in the 2006 Civic sedan in less than 2 hours without any real hitches (hehe). I modified the heat shield as instructed, and the plastic splash guard as well, which was easy. I had a do-over at the end because, at least for the 06 civic, you need to put the muffler back up on it's hanger before bolting the receiver on to the passenger side, and that cost a few minutes. Not a big thing. The fish tape is a nice technique for getting those carriage bolts into place, as is the nut with the handle on it: smart. Overall, this looks and feels like a solid, good quality product. Not having used it yet, I can't comment on it's durability but I have little doubt that it'll be fine for pulling the sunfish trailer and maybe later on a bike rack. 427107

2009 Honda Civic

I bought the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver (Class 1, 1-1/4") for my wife's 2009 Honda Civic to use with a hitch mounted bike rack. The product has worked great for the year we've been using it. I had called around to several shops to see if they would install the hitch, but most would not since I hadn't purchased the hitch from them. So, I decided to install it myself. Though it took some time, doing it alone, I was very impressed with the instructions provided and with the accessories that came with the hitch. For example, a couple bolts came with a "fish wire" that could be threaded onto bolts that needed to be pulled through an opening in the car frame. It worked great. The hitch itself is solid and sturdy. No issues. 390320

By far Etrailer is the best place to buy your hitch. I work at a bicycle shop and we get a lot of people asking if we install hitches. I tell them go to etrailer not only will you get the best price, but your hitch may be so easy to put on that you can do it yourself. Just look to see if etrailer has a install video. I did this for my last two cars and have saved over $1000.00 on hitches and installation. My last hitch got a little beat up in shipping, nothing a can of black spray paint cant fix. Etrailer stood be hind their product 100%. It was not their fault it got banged up but they were willing to make me happy. GREAT JOB ETRAILER!!!!! 341133

Love the hitch on my 2012 Honda Civic Coupe SI but the instructions could have been a little more clear. I have the under plate which had to be cut but there is no template, nothing. It just said if you have it remove it but then what? Plus the heat shield had to be cut and that could also use a template to make it easier so that you don't cut more than you have to. Have purchased a hitch for my 2009 Honda Civic 4dr and that one was a piece of cake to put on compared to this one, it took over 4 hours where the other one was on hour. But one thing I do have to say, I like how it looks, you can barely see you have a hitch. 54096

- C11391

by:

I had a lot of trouble with the install of my hitch. I didn't need to cut the plastic piece but did the heat shield. I didn't understand that you basically have to wedge the exhaust side into place first as you work around the muffler as best you can and try not to rip everything down in the process. Tough job especially alone. My wife had to help me hold up the drivers side as I fought the exhaust. I had no jacks or lift. Prob a piece of cake working standing up and reaching under the car. Lesson learned but the hitch itself is a nice one and I like that is made in the USA. 403420

Beautiful hitch! Just as Rose described it. I hate to subject it to road conditions it's so nice. Rose recommended the Curt over the Draw-tite, and I'm so glad she did. Thanks Rose! You're great! I also received the hitch in just 3 days. Just DON'T USE -PS!!! They love to throw and destroy packages. Mine had a corner crushed in where it had been thrown, but fortunately nothing was damaged. HA! Sorry U - -, you missed one. I get a lot of packages from those people, and they have about a 95% record for damaging my goods. Sorry for the rant, it just kind of 'slipped' out. 522528

Product has a nice finish and fit my vehicle perfectly. The hardware installation instructions were spot on with one exception: I did not need to remove the dust shield that the instructions called for removal of and notching. The '07 civic couple dust shield(large plastic piece that is bolted to the rear under side of the car) is shaped so as the allow installation without trimming. I torqued it all to spec and the next day hitched up a 900 pound trailer to tow it 500 miles away and then back two days later. Hitch did the job wonderfully. 388698

Installed the Curt hitch on my '12 Civic Si. Installation was pretty straightforward but the 30 minute install time is a little optimistic due to having to trim the under-body plastic fairing and exhaust heat shield. Pay particular attention to the instructions that say to "simultaneously raise the hitch and exhaust..." . The exhaust wil not go back info place after the hitch is installed unless you disconnect it further upstream. D'oh! All in all a very good product and etrailer is awesome! 378419

2016 Acura ILX

Took hitch to body shop to have it installed yesterday. Picked it up today. The pro's opinion: very well designed kit and easy install, though it took a little effort to get the sound baffling of the 2016 Acura ILX out of the way, a job complicated by the fact that I'd had splash guards installed, and that install connected the left guard to the splash plate. Took him about two hours, so cost was reasonable all around. Looking forward to putting my bike rack on soon. 202222

Hitch arrived in a timely fashion. Installation was a breeze and the fit and finish were perfect. Wiring harness hooked up perfectly. etrailer made the whole process simple. I just ordered another hitch and harness for our new car. 378633

- C11391

by:

Installation is easy enough, just need to pay attention to the order in which you install everything. I found on my ILX it was easier to install the muffler back into the rubber mounts then working the hitch bracket over the exhaust nozzle for final installation. Remember to leave it loose and hanging on the bolts so you can test fit the bottom panel and cut away what is needed and allow access to final torque all the hardware. 95601

The hitch went on the car with a little trouble during the installation. I ended up having to move 2 things but don't remember what they were. After it was installed it has worked great. It pulls my trailer just fine with no "wobbling" or side-to-side movements. Because its being pulled by my Civic i was a little nervous whether the car could handle it But its been great. I used it 5 times since i purchased it. Love it 383469

The hitch looks great and installed with no surprises. I have put a hitch on my last three Civic Si's. This Curt hitch for my 2015 Civic Si is the best one yet. The only part of the hitch that is visible is the 1 1/4" receiver hole, and it blends in nicely with the back of the car. I use my hitch for some light towing, but mainly for my bicycle rack. I will continue to purchase from etrailer. 254927

I loved the instructional video! It used my exact same car, so how could I NOT give 10 stars? The product itself is great and very well made, just drove from Vegas to the Bay Area CA, about an 8 hour drive through very gusty winds. Big props to E-Trailer not only for the video, but for excellent packing and fast shipping. From now I will look for E-Trailer first for all my transport needs. 188527

etrailer was an excellent choice for purchasing a trailer hitch from. They had excellent service and extremely fast shipping. I needed a trailer hitch to haul my motorcycle with my 2010 Honda Civic. Beautiful finish, solid piece Great hitch but could use an additional 1/8" of clearance in the mounting holes. Somewhat of a battle getting it all lined up and the extra room would have made a big difference. Still, as good as any I've had experience with and better than most. Mounting hardware and threading wires are a winner. Great value. 727

Great product! Easy install! I ordered this hitch last week and installed it today. Everything went smooth. I didn't even trim my heat shield i just pressed it up against the hitch bolts. Product installed fairly easily. I used it to pull a [rental trailer] full of equipment back from college for the summer. Was a little harder to install that I thought but I got the job done. The wiring was very easy. I'm happy. It works and aid for itself in one pull versus renting a truck. 510529

Not much to say. I needed a tow hitch to attach a bike rack to and this one fit the bill. It does what I need it to do. The only drawback, I guess, is that my mechanic, who installed it for me, said that the installation was tough. Still, it was the right size and he did get it installed. 239613

Thanks for following up. It would be nice if other companies had the same dedication to customer service that you do. I use the hitch to attach my Yakima bike rack to the back of my car. Ive used it maybe 10-15 times over the course of the year and its given me no problems. As such, I have no complaints. Thanks again for checking in.

The trailer hitch for my Civic was an easy install. The shipping was fast. The people at etrailer are great and stand behind everything they sell. A year later I am very happy with it. for anyone hesitating about installing your own hitch, I would tell you that its not that hard at all. 389078

A few items not well represented in video or instruction. Replacing muffler.hangrr was tough after hitch in position. Cutting of under panels not well defined, had to modify one, and had to leave driver side loose until all bolts in and torqued. Fits very well. Well designed. 395539

Can't give 5 stars because I have not installed yet, but it looks perfect for the application. Price was very reasonable and it arrived as expected. I purchased a similar one for a Toyota Solara application and it very good, expect same for this Honda Civic application. 297792

Bought two hitches, that arrived amazingly fast! One on a 2013 ILX and one on a 2016 Highlander. Both fit very well with easy to follow instructions and both mounts are extremely solid! Thank you e-trailer for a great buying experience! Can't wait to start haulin' stuff. 243677

I still have the hitch and I have used it quite often. It continues to preform like new and I am still very satisfied with my decision to purchase your product. Thank you for your follow up...always happy to respond to a superior product!

Pretty simple install! On my 08 civic si coupe, the instructions tell you that you have to cut a portion of the plastic panel under the trunk. You do not have to cut it! Also taking the axle back portion of the exhaust off helps get the hitch installed. 129782

Great product. Really well made, my dad told me(welder for over 30 years). I'm no expert mechanic but this thing was a breeze to install on my '12 Honda Civic. Using this bad boy to take our bikes with us camping. Would recommend to anyone! 269192

I just received the hitch and wiring harness today and haven't installed it yet. However, the product looks very good and the online instructions are very inclusive. it should be easy to install when I get time in a few days. 6156

Easy install, owning the civic SI I had to remove a plastic underbody part that proved challenging when reinstalling. Torquing the passenger side forward most bolt also had its challenges due to the mufflers limited space. 109055

Arrived quickly in good shape. I've never installed a trailer hitch, but with a tiny bit of help from my son, we got the hitch and electrical hooked up and done in about 2 hours. Very nice and very convenient. Thanks. 194581

A bit difficult to get on but works fine for a bike rack. The difficulty was a thread problem and that combined with the location means you need to stay patient and relax. Not the hitches fault but a Honda problem. 424350

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Where is the Draw-Tite Class I Hitch # 24763 Manufactured
  • The Draw-Tite Class I hitch that fits your 2012 Honda Civic sedan, part # 24763, is made in Mexico. This is not at all uncommon for lighter-duty hitches like this. Curt offers their own Class I hitch, part # C11391, that is USA-made and which includes a pin and clip. Note that if used with any non-trailer load, say a bike rack or cargo carrier, Curt requires you to use their stabilizing strap # 18050 which is not a requirement for the Draw-Tite. If you like you can order the Curt...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Honda Civic Sedan
  • The Curt Hitch part # C11391 that you referenced would be the correct hitch for your 2015 Honda Civic Sedan. If you were looking for a bike rack to go along with this hitch I would recommend the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This is a great rack that has a ton of positive review from our customers who have bought it. Check out the review video I attached.

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2013 Honda Civic SI Sedan
  • I did some digging and found that the Curt trailer hitch # C11391 does fit the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan si model so you can use it. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. If you will be using the hitch for something like a bike rack or cargo carrier you will need to make sure that the accessory is rated for use on a Class I trailer hitch. Class I trailer hitches are limited to 2 bikes maximum. Curt recommends the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, for all...

  • Draw-tite 24763 vs Curt C11391 For 2015 Honda Civic Sedan
  • For your 2015 Honda Civic sedan the better option is the Draw Tite hitch # 24763 which is a confirmed fit. It doesn't require the stabilizer strap which is why I would recommend it for you. Curt requires the strap to provide extra support for when the vehicle goes over rough pavement or experiences a sudden shock like hitting a pothole. Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch feel that this isn't necessary with their hitches. One isn't necessarily stronger than the other. Because the strap is...

For your convenience, I will attach a links to the hitch, the instruction sheet, and the replacement hardware kit.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2013 Honda Civic LX Sedan
  • All of the trailer hitches for the 2013 Honda Civic sedan will require some sort of modification to the heat shield, lowering of the exhaust, and/or using a drill or other means to enlarge an access hole to insert the hardware to mount the hitch. The Draw-Tite hitch that fits is # 24763. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation and a link to the installation instructions for you. If you plan on doing some towing the correct ball mount is # 3593. For a 1-7/8...

If you plan on towing you can get the Curt hitch with a drawbar and pin and clip included. You would need to order part # C113913. A note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. • The Curt trailer hitch receiver, part # C11391, is confirmed to fit all models of the 2012 Honda Civic including your HF. It's a Class I, 1-14 inch receiver that bolts to your car's frame. You do need to use a stabilization strap, part # 18050, when carrying any non-trailer loads like a bike rack or cargo carrier.

  • Why Does Curt Require Support Straps on their Hitch Receivers
  • I have spoke with my contact at Curt numerous times regarding the requirement of the stabilizing/support strap, # 18050. Curt requires this strap in order to alleviate the leveraging affect that a non-trailer load places on a hitch like part # C11391. At Curt they like to use the example of carrying a gallon of milk. Think of the strain that would be put on your arm if it is extended opposed to if you carry the milk close to your body. This is what also happens with a hitch when a bike...

  • Is Stabilizing Strap Also Required for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on 2010 Honda Civic
  • You are correct. The Curt Class I Receiver Hitch # C11391, which is confirmed to fit your 2010 Honda Civic, requires you to use an additional stabilizing strap for non-trailer loads, such as bike racks and cargo carriers. This is simply an additional safety measure that Curt takes with their lower Class I and Class II trailer hitches, and is not necessarily an indication of the hitch's strength. Draw-Tite does not have this same requirement, so the Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch...
