Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Ford Fusion - Curt

Today on our 2012 Ford Fusion we're going to review and install the CURT class one 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C11390. Here's what our hitch is going to look like once it's installed. As you can see, this is a super nice and well hidden hitch, as the main body of our hitch is hidden behind the rear bumper fascia. We have a steel fully welded constructed hitch with a nice black powder-coated finish so it blends in with the underbody. The only thing truly exposed is our 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" receiver tube, the 1/2" pinhole the goes all the way through the receiver tube, never chain hold down on each side. This hitch is capable of up to 200 pounds of tongue weight and 2,000 pound tow capacity. Next we'll give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch.

From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 5". From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 11-1/4". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. We'll now go ahead and review some of the minimum tools required for installing the hitch. We're going to use a safety strap, which is nothing more than just a hold down strap, file, 3/4" socket, ratchet, and torque wrench.

Now we'll go ahead and show you how to install the hitch. Now to begin our install we first need to lower the exhaust. Before I remove the rubber isolators from the exhaust, to lower it I'm going to put a safety strap underneath of it to help control the weight of the exhaust as we let it down. Now with our safety strap in place we've got a total of tool rubber isolators connected to metal hangers that need to be removed, one above the muffler and one just forward of the rear axle. Now to remove the rubber isolator from the metal hanger we'll use a spray lubricant on each to help make it easier to slide them off the metal hanger. Then, using a pry bar or pliers, we can slide the rubber isolator off of the hanger.

Now if you have access to a hanger removal tool, it can make it easier, but it's not required. Now with both rubber isolators removed, we can let our exhaust down. Quick tech tip: if you had a dual exhaust system, you'd have three rubber isolators to remove. We'll just let our safety strap and safely lower our exhaust. Now we have both frame rails exposed. Next we'll go ahead and point out our attachment points.

As we point out our attachment points, keep in mind that both frame rails are the same and our attachment points are the same on each side, so each process we do here on the driver side will get repeated identically on the passenger side. Here we have a pre-drilled round hole in the frame as our forward attachment point for our hitch. Towards the rear of the frame or at the end of the frame where it meets the bumper these an oval hole, and that's going to be our rear attachment point. We'll need to enlarge the rear attachment point so that we can get our carriage bolt and block into the frame. As you can see, our block will fit but the carriage bolt is going to need a little room. Using a file we're just going to remove some of the metal around the oblong hole. Note, I'm just going to use a round file on a drill. Now once we have it filed out large enough that we can get our carriage bolt in place, we're ready to start installing the hardware. for each of our four attachment points we're going to use a 1/2" carriage bolt and block in the frame, coming down through the pre-drilled holes. Then once our hitch in place we'll use the 1/2" flange nut to secure it. Now to get our hardware into the frame we'll use the 1/2" bolt leaders that are supplied with the install kit. Let's go ahead and start going to our hardware in the frame by taking the bolt leader, feeding it through the forward attachment point, and out the access hole. Then we can slide on our block and thread on the carriage bolt. We'll feed the block and bolt into the frame separately and then pull them into position. Once we have the carriage bolt in place I'll go ahead and remove the pull wire. Now for our rear attachment point we're going to use a reverse pull method, putting the block onto the pull wire and go ahead and thread it on the carriage bolt now. Then, feeding the bolt into the frame first followed by the block. Once we have them both in the frame, we'll pull the bolt back down through our access hole to create our attachment point. Now I'm going to go ahead and leave my pull wire onto the rear attachment point as it will help with getting our hitch up in position without pushing the hardware back into the frame. Now with the driver side ready we'll repeat the same process on the passenger side. Now with all our hardware in place we're ready to install the hitch. If you don't have an extra set of hands to help you, go ahead and take the hitch and feed it up on top of the exhaust. Then we'll move to the driver side, take our pull wire, feed it through the rear attachment point on the hitch, and bring it up to the frame. Make sure you're careful not to push your fastener back up into the frame for your forward attachment point. Then once we have the becoming coming down through the hitch we'll go ahead and install our flange nut. Now we'll just install our fasteners finger tight until we have them all in place. Now with the forward attachment point holding our hitch on the driver side, I'll move over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. Now that we have our forward attachment hardware in place we'll go ahead and bring the hitch up to the frame nice and tight, remove our pull wire, and then install our flange nut. Now once we have all our hardware installed we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Then once we have it tightened down, we can go ahead and torque to specification as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch in place, tightened down and torqued to specifications, we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Once we have the exhaust back on, we'll go ahead and remove our safety straps. Just like that, our hitch is installed and we're ready to hit the road. That will complete the review and install of the CURT class one 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C11390, on our 2012 Ford Fusion. .

Fantastic product. Great fit and finish. Had some issues elongating the front holes. We ended up using a skill saw and slotted the hole. We bent the metal down and pushed it back when the washer was installed. The hardware was perfect and that wire tool for the bolts was ingenious. Thanks guys 349788

  • Trailer Hitch and Ball Mount Recommendations for a 2010 Ford Fusion
Rise or drop is not measured to the top of the ball but instead to the top of the platform on the ball mount that holds the ball. So that is going to change things a little. I have included a link to a help article that explains how to measure for rise/drop to tow a trailer level. For a hitch I recommend going with Curt hitch # C11390 for your 2010 Ford Fusion. You mentioned that some Class I hitches have a tab in them meaning some Class II accessories will not fit. This hitch does not...

  • Recommended Hitch and Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2012 Lincoln MKZ
The type of hitch made for your 2012 Lincoln MKZ is a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I type, such as # 24865 and # C11390. Since both install exactly the same way and offer identical capacities I suggest the power-priced Draw-Tite # 24865. This hitch comes complete with all required hardware and the installation in your car is shown in the linked video. You'll also need a compatible Class I cargo carrier such as one of those shown on the linked page. The one I suggest is the Curt # C18110...

  • Comparing CURT Trailer Hitch and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for a 2011 Ford Fusion
A 7/16 inch bolt and a 1/2 inch bolt will both have a much higher capacity than the hitch or vehicle frame rails. Since both installation instructions for CURT, # 11390, and Draw-Tite, # 24865, require fishwiring hardware through the frame rails, the slightly smaller Draw-Tite 7/16 inch bolts will be easier to fishwire into place. The other major difference is the CURT hitch does require the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, for any non-trailer load such as a bike rack or cargo...

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch Fit a 2012 Ford Fusion with Dual Exhaust
Yes, you can install Curt trailer hitch # C11390 on your 2012 Ford Fusion with dual exhaust. The hitch, like the exhaust configuration on your Fusion, is symmetrical and the hitch will fit above the exhaust on both sides just like in the video I have linked on a single exhaust model. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are...

  • Hitch Clearance for Bike Rack on 2011 Ford Fusion
We offer two Class I hitches for your 2011 Ford Fusion, the Draw-Tite # 24865 and the Curt # C11390. I reviewed the two linked installation videos for these items to compare their clearance dimensions and they differ by only 1/4-inch. The Curt hitch will provide approximately 5-1/4-inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the back of the bumper cover, while the Draw-Tite dimension is 5-inches. The clearance provided by compatible Class I bike racks will vary between racks. A new...

  • Installation of a Trailer Hitch Receiver In Two Separate Days or Sessions
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # C11390 you asked this question from is a confirmed fit for your 2012 Ford Fusion. It absolutely is possible to spread an installation out over two days, but you will want to be careful of a couple of things. Once you have the bolts installed into the frame, you will want to make sure that they can't vibrate loose from their location. This may mean using additional washers to ensure the flange lock nut doesn't have the...

  • Will Trailer Hitch Fit Both 2010 Ford Fusion and 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid
It sounds as if you are wanting to move your hitch from your 2010 Ford Fusion to your 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid. We have three hitches that will fit both your 2010 Ford Fusion and 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid. The choices are Draw-Tite # 24865 and Curt # C11390. The hitch that you referenced will not fit either your 2010 or 2011 Fusion. It was designed to fit the 2013-2014 Ford Fusion. If you are moving a hitch from one Fusion to the other, it is recommended that you use new hardware on...

Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24865. This hitch is 5-1/2 inches from the outermost part of the bumper to the center of the itch pin hole. The Curt Hitch # C11390 has a measurement from the outermost bumper of 5 inches to the center of the hitch pin hole. For your ball mount, I recommend the Curt Class II Drawbar - 2-5/8" Rise, 3-1/4" Drop - 7-1/4" Long - 3,500 lbs # C45521 along with a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball like # A-80 or a 2 inch ball...

Curt requires the use of their stabilizer strap part # 18050 when using their hitch # C11390 to carry a non-supported load like a bike rack. I attached a review video for you to check for the strap as well. Also attached an install video for the trailer hitch too.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2011 Ford Fusion to Carry Cargo Carrier/Bike Rack

  • Can Exhaust Interfere with Trailer Hitch Installs
For some hitch installs it is required to modify how the exhaust hangs so that it doesn't interfere with the hitch. Either so that the two can be installed together or so that the exhaust doesn't rattle against the hitch. I attached a couple help articles that cover how this would be addressed. Most likely you wouldn't have to make these modifications.

  • Does Curt Stabilization Strap Requirement Indicate Difference in Hitch Quality
Curt's USA-made hitches like # C11390 that have the support strap # 18050 requirement for static loads like bike racks are just as well-made as those from Draw-Tite which do not share this requirement. Curt's warranty policy requires the strap for many of their hitches, but in truth almost any hitch that will be handling the load of a bike rack or cargo carrier will benefit from using one or even two of the straps to steady the rack/carrier in the hitch as you go down the road. • Can You Carry a Mobility Scooter On a 2012 Lincoln MKZ
The trailer hitch options for a 2012 Lincoln MKZ are the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch part # 24865 and the Curt Class I Receiver Hitch part # C11390 which are both rated for 2,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight. There is not a trailer hitch option for the Lincoln MKZ that offers higher capacities as the vehicle is rather small and a larger capacity hitch would not be practical because the vehicle could not handle the extra load.
