Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Mazda 3

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Mazda 3 you're going to be taking a look at, I'm going to show you how to install the Curt Class One trailer hitch receiver. Part number C11377. This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. As you can see the cross-tube is visible however it is a round tube design and each end of it does have a light bend in it so it's going to fit nicely with the contour of the vehicle. It's going to have plate-style safety chain loops so it' got plenty of room for different size safety chain hooks. And this hitch is going to be a Class One. It's going to be 1 1/4" by 1 1/4".

Hitch pinhole is going to be half inch in diameter. As you can see it's going to have a nice reinforced collar to give it a little bit extra stability on the receiver tube. However this is not going to change the weight capacity. This hitch is going to have a 200 pound max tongue weight which is the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube and a 2000 pound max trailer weight which is the trailer plus the load included. Now I do recommend checking the owner's manual of your Mazda to make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You want to pick the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. Now Curt does recommend you use some stabilization straps for any non-wheel loads.

Keep in mind this is a Class One hitch so you are required to only use Class One accessories. As far as the installation goes, this is a very simple installation. There's not going to be any drilling or welding required. It's going to come with all the necessary hardware.I do recommend getting an extra set of hands to help lift the hitch into place. Now let's give you a few measurements to help you on deciding on a new hitch accessory you may need such as a bike rack or cargo carrier.

From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost part of the bumper is about 3 inches. From the ground to the top innermost part of the receiver tube is about 11 1/2 inches. Now it's a good idea to get a raised shank for better ground clearance. Now let's show you how to get this installed. We're going to take our pull wire, spring in. We're going to go through this back hole.

We're going to come out of the large hole right here in the front. Like that. Put a little bend in your wire to keep it from coming out. You're going to take the spacer block. Go ahead and slide it on and up and into the hole. Carriage bolt, we're going to thread it on to our spring. You can pull it out of the hole like that. You're going to do the same thing on the other side. Next we're going to do what's called the reverse pull. Take another spring or a pull wire. Put on your spacer block first. Thread on your carriage bolt. We're going to push our carriage bolt up in the hole first and our spacer block and just pull it back down through. The next thing we got to do is this little tab right here on the bottom of our fascia, we're going to have to cut a little section out of it. We're going to go about like this and this is on our driver's side. Passenger side I'm going to go about like this. I'm going to take some tin snips. You can use a razor knife if you want. These usually work pretty good. We'll get these tabs out. Now with an extra set of hands we're going to take our pull wires which go through the corresponding holes. We'll over top of our exhaust. There it's in place. We'll remove one of the wires and we're going to put on a flange nut. We're going to put one of the flange nuts on both sides of the hitch to hold our hitch in place while we install our remaining hardware. Now you can put on the remaining hardware. Next, with a 19 millimeter socket we're going to tighten all of our hardware. Next we'll torque all the hardware to the specifications in the instructions. And that will do it for a look at an installation on the Curt Class One trailer hitch receiver, part number C11377 on our 2017 Mazda Three,.

I am so happy with my experience with etrailer.com. I ordered the Curt trailer hitch and a Swagman bike rack for my Mazda 3. Michelle S. was so helpful when the bike rack wasn't immediately available. She made a recommendation for a comparable bookrack- the Hollywood model. I am thrilled with my purchase. The items arrived when promised. The instructions for installing the trailer hitch and assembling the bike rack were very clear. The bike rack is easy to use and very secure. I love that the hooks around the bike frame lock with the key, and that the whole rack locks securely to the car. The bikes hardly moved during our drive out of state and did not touch at all. My family and I had a wonderful vacation this past weekend and were so glad to have great gear to transport our bikes. 693994

Installation was easy on my 2016 Mazda 3/5 door hatchback. Using just a quick squirt of silicone lube on the 4 muffler hanger made them slip off with ease. The 2 front mounting holes were not obvious and I first though that the hitch wouldn't fit, but looking a little closer the front holes were there under the muffler hanger rod and a little hard to see. They were also covered by tape that was mentioned in the instructions. I found it helpful to temporarily support the hitch with plastic tie wraps from the muffler hangers with the hitch lifted in place until I could get the nuts on. U-Haul wanted $250 for there hitch installed. 293492

Hitch part # C11377 is for all 2014 Mazda 3 hatchbacks, regardless of trim. It will work fine on your 2014 3s GT.

Solid hitch, nice and straight, excellent finish. Etrailer had the best price on this hitch of any site by a wide margin, and it arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Would buy again. 488173

Great product, probably the 3rd hitch I have bought from entailed. Everything it's been shipped fast with no issues. Took about 30-40 min to install. Great product and company. 156407

Shipping was prompt. Despite very little apparent damage to the box, the hitch had a few deep scratches and chips. I repaired these with black touch-up paint, but it shouldn't arrive like this. It would be nice if the mounting hardware (bolts and flat brackets) were stainless steel. Installation certainly requires the removal of the four rubber exhaust hangers. Use a jack stand under the main pipe to lower the muffler about two inches. The installation will be very difficult if attempted alone because the hitch has to be carefully moved into position and then the bolts to which guide wires are affixed have to be threaded through the holes on the brackets of the hitch. The fit is good on a 2017 Mazda3 hatchback. Equal clearance all around and no interference with the exhaust pipes or bumper. Appearance wise, I think the Curt looks better than the Drawtite which a friend of mine has on his Mazda3. 509350

My search for a hitch led me right to etrailer, and the selection and ordering process was a breeze. Shipping was very prompt and the installation process was relatively straightforward. The online video was helpful, but I own the hatchback model so there are a few differences I had to figure out. Some basic bicycle lubricant helped to free the muffler mounts so I could access the mounting points. The only thing I was not able to do on my own was touque the bolts due to the tight clearance of laying under my car, which was expected. The hitch preformed well with the bike carrier I own and I hardly notice the hitch with out the rack on board. Definitely a quality product at a great price and I would certainly recommend etrailer. 596026

The C11377 did not align properly with the frame holes on my 2015 Mazda3 iSport 4dr sedan and had to use the back feeder hole. Also had to trim some of the bottom spolier but not visible from the back. Also was one who pushed a screw back into the frame. Wish they would account for that and include 5 screws. 184643

Instructions were good, install was easy, required no drilling or cutting for my application; 2104 Mazda 3 hatchback. Removing the exhaust hangers was easy using a spray solution of water and dish soap, I used a cambuckle type of tie down hooked to the suspension to raise and lower the exhaust as needed. I unclipped a wire on the driver side frame to give a little extra space to position the hitch. It helps to have a helper to position the hitch and hold it up while bolting it. This is my second hitch from Etrailer and like the first one it arrived in good condition. 136483

I was just recently able to attempt installing my new equipment, but unfortunately it does not fit my vehicle. I have a 2014 Mazda3 Hatchback, which this item is listed as fitting, but as you can see in the pictures the bolt holes are much farther apart on the equipment than on the vehicle. It appears to have the correct product number which I ordered except that this item us not designed with a C as listed online. Please advise on how to rectify the issue. 601485

There is another hole in the frame member on the other side of the exhaust mount shown in your photo. The hole could be covered with a plastic plug, tape or undercoating, you might need to take a putty knife to the underside of the frame member to scrape away any undercoat or grime that might be covering the mounting hole.

This is my second receiver from etrailer. There was no installation video specific to my car (2015 Mazda 3) so I had to figure out how to get the hitch into place. Once I dropped down the muffler, easy peasy. Fits and looks great. Went on my first trip with our cargo box attached with no problems. Makes packing for camping so much easier and allows my kiddo to take a friend. Cheaper than other wegsites. Was able to get the receiver and wiring kit for the price of only the receiver on AMZ. Thanks! 665178

I have installed a receiver hitch before, so the process wasn't entirely new to me and I'm pretty handy, but when I read in the instructions that the estimated installation time was 45 minutes for the professional and 90 minutes for the novice, I totally accepted the challenge. Floor jack, 2 jack stands, WD-40 to spray on the rubber exhaust hangers to make them easy to slide on and off, a deep drive 3/4" socket on a long extension and ratchet, and a 2 foot pry bar. That's it. Car back on the ground, tools put up and washing my hands in just over 40 minutes. I did have some wrestling to do. 3 bolts lined up nicely but the 4th one took the pry bar. I'm guessing a little shipping damage or maybe some warping during the weld process, but not really a big deal. Could be a hassle for the novice. Overall, I'm super happy with the product and the hardware. The final fit and finish are exactly what I want. The install instructions for the 2014 Mazda3 Hatchback are reasonable, but maybe not the best they could be. No trimming of any plastic on the hatchback but apparently there is on the sedan. 663907

Great hitch, great price! Fairly easy install. Only time consuming issue was getting the 4 rubber isolation dampers off to lower the exhaust. Once that was done it was a breeze. The bolts fish easily with the provided wires. I am using it with a Kuat transfer 1 bike rack. 653670

Everything worked fine for my Mazda 3. Except that the width of the bar was off by about a quarter of an inch. I had to jam a 2x4 to correct the length while we bolted onto the vehicle. One year later and it still works well. Have driven about 500 miles with two bikes on it with no problems. 621943

  • Highest Capacity Trailer Hitch for 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback
All of the hitches made for your 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback are rated the same, for 200-lbs of tongue weight (TW) and 2000-lbs towing capacity. But these are available in two receiver sizes, both 1-1/4-inch like # 24914 from Draw-Tite and # C11377 from Curt, and also 2-inch like the EcoHitch # 306-X7305 that you referenced in your question. If you already own accessory bike and cargo carriers that fit one particular size hitch then you might a well stick with that same size for the hitch....

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback
The hitch I recommend for your 2018 Mazda 3 for carrying a bike rack is the Draw Tite part # 24914 because unlike the Curt hitch that fits your vehicle part # C11377 it does not require the use of a stabilizer strap when carrying a bike rack like you mentioned wanting to do. For a bike rack the Thule DoubleTrack part # TH9054 is what I recommend. This is a platform rack which means it much easier to load and unload as well as holding the bikes a bit more securely. Installing a trailer hitch such as Curt trailer hitch # C11377 will not affect the tire sensors. However, depending on what you use the hitch for the extra weight in the hitch could cause an inaccurate reading of the tire sensors but should go back to normal (if it happens at all) once the load is removed from the hitch. As long as the bike rack you are looking to attach is able to fit 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch openings, you will not have a problem.

  • MaxxHaul MT70387 Wobbles Around in Hitch
The threaded hitch pin shown being used in the photo is the correct pin. The other pin wouldn't work because of the internal threads in the shank of the bike rack. The threaded bolt shown in your photo is an anti-rattle hitch bolt. It's mean to be ran down all the way until it's snug. This pulls the shank of the bike rack tight against the side of the receiver tube which keeps the movement of the rack in the hitch to a minimum. Keep in mind that due to the fact that the rack is capable...

  • Can you Tow a Trailer with a 2018 Mazda 3
According to the owner's manual for your 2018 Mazda 3, "Your Mazda is not designed for towing. Never tow a trailer with your Mazda." However, if you choose to ignore this recommendation then you will want to use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11377 which is a custom fit that installs using pre drilled holes in the frame rail. I have attached an install video for you as well.

  • Frame Access Hole is Smaller on 2019 Mazda 3 Hatchback for Installing Curt Hitch C11377
The cutout on your frame is different from what we have seen. It does appear to be smaller. You'd want to use a dremel or rotary tool to enlarge it slightly till you can pass the bolt and spacer of the Curt Hitch part # C11377 through.

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback to Carry 2 Bikes
For your 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24914. It does not require a stabilization strap when using a bike rack. Like you said you would need an adapter, # HTAD. However, the use of an adapter reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. For Draw-Tite hitch # 24914 the use of the adapter takes the tongue weight capacity from 200 to 100 pounds. the combined weight of the bike rack and bikes cannot exceed 100 pounds. If the bikes...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2015 Mazda 3s Hatchback with LED Lights
We have yet to have someone come in with a 2015 Mazda 3s hatchback to have a trailer hitch installed so that is why you don't see a video for it. But I have linked the installation instructions for you which contains step by step instructions with pictures detailing the installation process. If you plan on doing some towing with the hitch the correct ball mount to use is # C45521. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring you will need...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2015 Mazda 3 Grand Touring
Since you do not want anything touching the paint of your vehicle the best option is going to be a hitch mounted option. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack part # S64670. This rack has a ton of positive reviews from our customers who have tried it. Check out the review video I attached for more info. This rack can fold up for storage so that it will store easily as well. For a trailer hitch the part # 24914...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback
For your 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback either the Curt Hitch part # C11377 that you referenced or the Draw Tite hitch part # 24914 would work well for you. I personally like the round tube hitches because I believe they are less visible than the square tube hitches, so I would go with the Curt hitch. You are right, the LED taillight consideration is actually for the trailer wiring and not the hitch. But since we connect the hitch and the trailer wiring fitguides so that on the product page...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit Recommendation for 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback
That's correct that the Draw-Tite # 24912 only fits the sedan model of the 2018 Mazda 3. Instead we carry Draw-Tite # 24914 and Curt # C11377. Of the two I like the Draw-Tite because it doesn't requrie the support strap, part # 18050, when you're using the hitch to barry a bike rack or cargo carrier.

  • Compatibility of Curt Class I # C11377 and Swagman Trailhead # S63360 on 2014 Mazda 3 GT Sedan
The Curt # C11377 would indeed be compatible with your Mazda 3, but when Curt Class I hitches are used with non trailer loads like a bike rack, Curt's warranty requirements specify that a stabilizing strap like # 18050 be used. Rather than needing to fool with a strap, I'd recommend you go with the Draw-Tite # 24912 that has no such requirement. The Swagman Trailhead bike rack you referred to, part # S63360 would work great with the hitch.
