Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Hyundai Elantra - Curt

Today on our 2012 Hyundai Elantra, we'll be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver. In a class one with an inch and aquarteropening on the receiver, part number C11303. Here's what the hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch. Such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer-most edge of the bumper, is approximately 4 inches.

From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 9 and three-quarter inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. We'll begin by lowering the exhaust down, out of the way. To do this, we'll need to remove to rubber isolators. To ease removing the rubber isolators, we'll go ahead and use a little bit of spray lubricant and a large pry bar.

Once we have both of the rubber isolators removed, you can see how the exhaust will rest, here, on the frame. Giving us just enough room to get into our mounting location, over here, on the passenger side. Next, we're going to need to go ahead and remove the heat shield that was above the muffler. To do this, we'll need to remove 5 nuts. You'll need to use a 10mm socket. And then pull the heat shield down, out of the way.

Now that we've got our heat shield down, out of the way, we'll need to remove a rubber plug from each side, as this is our mounting location. Now that we have the rubber plug removed from each side, we'll go ahead and start, over here, on the driver side. As you can see here, our spacer block just doesn't fit in. Nor does the carriage bolt. So we'll take our file on our drill and we'll go ahead and open up the hole.

Next we'll go ahead and install a quarter-inch by one-inch by three-inch square hole spacer block and a half-inch carriage bolt. To do this, we'll use the fish wire and use the reverse fish wire technique. We'll feed the spacer block onto the fish wire and then thread the carriage bolt on. We'll then push the carriage bolt up, into the frame, followed by the spacer block. Once both of these are in the frame, we'll gently pull down on the wire, pulling the carriage bolt into place. We'll repeat this process, over here, on the other side. We'll need to ream out the hole on this other side. As well as install the carriage bolt and spacer block. Now that we have both of these done, we're ready ready to put our heat shield back up into place. We'll do that by just putting the five nuts back on. Now that our heat shield's back up into place, we'll go ahead and put the center mounting location in as well. We'll be installing this in the rear tow loop. This location, again, we'll use a half-inch carriage bolt. But this time, we'll be using the larger spacer block that's provided with the kit. Each of the three mounting locations will be using a half-inch flange nut to secure it to the carriage bolt. Now because our vehicle is a sedan, we'll be using the hole closest to the receiver tube to mount our hitch on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and get an extra set of hands. We'll raise our hitch up into place. We'll start, over here, on the passenger side, so that we work the hitch up, over the exhaust, and slide it over the carriage bolt. Followed by putting the flange nut in place. We'll just install the flange nut, for now, loosely. As we need to install the other two flange nuts once we line up the holes. We'll then go ahead and tighten down everything. And then torque it to the manufactures' specification. Now that the hardware's been torqued, we can reinstall the two rubber exhaust hangers. They go back on much easier if you add a little more spray lubricant. As they'll slide back over the metal hook a lot easier. Now that the exhaust is back up, into place, that'll complete our installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11303, on our 2012 Hyundai Elantra. .

Good quality, great installation instructions, competitive pricing. I would recommend etrailer products. It appears that the company went to great lengths to detail the step by step installation on my Hyundai Elantra, including a video. With the hundreds of different makes and models (and the different years), the company must have had a monumental task to document each one of them for which they offer a product. 549720

Serves its intended purpose but on my 2014 Elantra the mounting bracket comes in contact with end of the muffler and makes a horrible noise in the car when at idle, accelerating, or when going over bumps. Short of making/paying for an exhaust/muffler modification I have tried various methods to reduce the noise with limited success. 524963

Occasionally hitches will make contact with a vehicles exhaust system. There are a few ways to fix the rattling issues. Bending the exhaust hanger can allow you to raise or lower the exhaust. If the exhaust hanger is bolted to the vehicle then you can unbolt it and reposition it. Another option is replacing the rubber isolator to a shorter of longer isolator to lower or raise the exhaust. I have attached a link with more detail.

Product seems to be good so far. Getting it onto the car was another story. Brought it into the mechanic to install. Even though I bought the hitch specifically to fit my car, it had to be manipulated, bent and more to work around the exhaust pipe. Took 1 3/4 hours by someone who had a lift, all the tools, and mechanical knowledge. 732176

This product is awesome. You can clearly see pride in manufacturing. The photo instructions were very easy to follow. As a do it yourself project, it was very easy and the online video really helped. I have never installed a hitch on a car before and it took me under an hour. I fully recommend this product!!! 643532

Excellent product and it looks great! The directions stated that the heat shield be removed and re-installed. Mine was rusted so I could not remove it. It turned out to be unnecessary since I was able to the install the hitch without removing it. 524670

This Curt tow hitch is very well made. Even for the price you are getting a quality hitch. It arrived well packaged and on time. I have a 2014 Hyundai Elantra sedan and installation was a breeze (that is if you know what you are doing and have the nessesary tools to do the job) The hitch only has 3 huge bolts, nuts and plates to secure it in place and thats it! On my car though you have to take off and cut a portion of the plastic dust cover on the drivers side to access the rear frame where the bolt and nut is attached. On the passenger side you have to loosen the muffler rubber hangers, take off and cut a portion of the heat shield to access the hole where the bolt and nut goes. All in all it took me about a little over an hour to compete the installation. What I also liked about this hitch is its perfectly placed on my car. Its not sticking out too far. Just perfect! I highly recommend etrailer from now on. Great customer service! Fast free shipping! Now I am waiting for my Swagman G10 hitch bike rack that I also purchased from etrailer! 431403

the hitch arrived quickly -fit as it should and looks fine under my daughter's elantra... It was purchased to accommodate a bike carrier and other than when travelling overspeed bumps at the college dorm has performed as expected. The clearance is not the best in the small car BUT that is not the fault of Curt. 374926

I ordered a hitch for a brand new Elantra, wanting it to haul our two bicycles behind a motorhome. The hitch arrived quickly and the only problem I had was following the directions... and it was entirely my fault. The hitch installed just like the instructions said, but I was trying to make it fit a hole that was already in the frame when the instructions said it might be necessary to drill a new hole. Once I figured that out, the hitch went on without a hitch (pun intended :-) I've ordered three hitches from etrailer, one for a Sonata, a Elantra and a Mazda CX-5. All were quality hitches that work perfectly. 327327

  • Is Drilling Required to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Hyundai Elantra
On the 2012 Hyundai Elantra, some models were built in the United States and some were built in Korea. If you have a model that was built in Korea, you will have to drill holes to install trailer hitch # C11303. The dealership may be able to tell you which factory the vehicle was built in. You can also check the frame at the back of the vehicle to determine if it has the holes needed to install the hitch. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. This trailer hitch is a Class I so you are limited to a maximum of 2 bikes and the carrier needs to be Class I compatible. Before installing a trailer hitch on your 2016 Hyundai Elantra you first have to tow according to the towing limits posted in your owner's manual. No matter the weight rating for the trailer hitch, the towing capacity of your vehicle takes precedent. According to your owners manual, trailer towing is not recommend with the 2016 Hyundai Elantra.
