Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Toyota Prius - Curt

Today on our 2015 Toyota Prius we're going to be taking a look at and showing you hot to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class I, part number C11276. Here's what it looks like once it's installed. You can see it's got a nice round tubular design, it's going to tuck up nicely against the bottom side of our Prius. We have a nice, large flat style safety chain loops. We've got an inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver, class one. It's going to be a complete bolt on design, utilizing factory weld nuts.

It's going to be quick and easy. The hitch is powder coated, that's going to help protect it against rust and corrosion and keep it looking nice for years to come. This hitch is designed for 200 pounds of tongue weight, which is our downward force, and 2,000 pounds of gross trailer weight, which is the amount of the loaded trailer that you can tow. You want to check with your owner's manual to make sure that your vehicle is able to tow that amount of weight and always use whatever is the less of the amounts. There is one note with this hitch, if you're going to be carrying a non-trailered load such as a cargo carrier or a bike rack they do recommend the use of a stabilization strap. Now we're going to go ahead and give you some measurements, it's going to help you in selecting some accessories. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the to the outer most part of the bumper it's about an inch and three-quarters.

From the ground to the top of the inside of the receiver tube it's going to be about 12 inches. We're going to begin our install by finding our nine points. On the driver side here we're going to have this factory tow hook, it's going to have two bolts up in there. We're going to remove that tow hook and the bolt, give those back to our customer. Our hitch is going to bolt up in place of that.

Over here on the passenger side we're going to have these two bolts right here that are part of our exhaust hanger. We're going to take those down and we're going to sandwich our hitch in between the body and the exhaust hanger. We're going to start by removing our exhaust clamp in the back here. We're going to go ahead and pop it off and that's going to give us enough room we don't have to pull any more clamps down. We'll take down these two bolts here, they're going to be 17 millimeter. We're going to return the bolts to the customer but we're going to reuse the hanger.

We're going to be mounting it with these new 12 millimeter bolts and a conical tooth washer for each one. You want to make sure you put the teeth side facing the hitch. We're going to take our hitch, we're going to feed it into the hole there. Then we're going to place it up over the top of the exhaust on this side. Then we can go to the drivers side and we'll do the same thing with the other two bolts. We want to make sure we have it centered up on our vehicle then we can go ahead and run up the bolt. We're just going to run them up snug. Then we can go ahead and torque them down to the specifications listed in our instructions. We're going to be using a 19 millimeter socket. Our last step is going to be to reinstall our exhaust hanger. To make it slide out a little easier, we're going to go ahead and put some spray lubricant in there. That's going to help the rubber slide back onto the tab here a little easier. You just want to check it and make sure it's not going to make any contact with your hitch. That's going to do it for our look at and install of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class I, part number C11276 on our 2015 Toyota Prius.

Hitch works great. Installation went fairly smoothly. There were two of us working together on it and while it took a little more time than expected, it is rock solid. I was a little hesitant to purchase as it is more visible than other hitches, but the practical impact is I no longer notice it. Having owned several vehicles with hitches, one thing I like over those is the ability to tighten the pin when you use a ball mount or a bike rack. A good product at a reasonable price. 571570

So far, it looked pretty good and sturdy. Only thing is a little annoying is when I need to drive my Prius up my driveway, I have to go up at an angle, otherwise, the trailer hitch would scratch the floor. 570926

I installed this trailer hitch MYSELF in about 30 minutes. Followed the instructions and watched a you tube video. No issues whatsoever. It is the second time I have used this company and their products: great prices and really fast shipments. Thank you for running a business the way it should be run! 577770

I tried to install the hitch today but could not as per the instructions. The tow hook does not line up with the hitch, see pictures. I ended up installing without the hook but that is not how it should be. Please advice 579450

hitch on a 2015 Toyota Prius. Where the tow hook is located will have two bolts. Remove those two bolts and the tow hook. The two hooks will be replaced by the hitch. I have attached a video on a 2015 Toyota Prius for your reference.

Directions and video were accurate except for the tow hook not easy to get back on and the tight spaces to work in with a socket and extension. The heat shield over the muffler was corroded and came off due to bumping it with tools. Able to re-attach heat shield with the use of fender washers. Otherwise the Curt for well and is strong. 568044

I placed my order for the Curt trailer hitch on Friday morning and received it the following Tuesday afternoon. The shipping was free and I am thrilled how quickly it arrived. Kudos to the shipping team! This trailer hitch was packaged very well and was a perfect fit on my Prius V. The instructions were quite clear and it took me about 20 minutes to install it. I bought it to mount a roll-on bike rack for my wife's ebike, which is quite heavy. 545989

Purchased the Curt hitch to allow hauling a bike rack and possibly a utility trailer. The hitch was very well made and very easy to install. No issues were encountered at all with the installation - a true bolt-on. etrailer had the hitch delivered quickly to me and the purchasing process went extremely well. Thanks Curt and etrailer for a great product and great service. 558382

I installed the Curt C11276 trailer hitch receiver on my 2015 Toyota Prius, after reviewing the instructions and watching Curt's YouTube video for a similar installation (2010 Toyota Prius). The instructions were helpful; so was the video. The main snag was that the bolt holes in the hitch flanges did not quite line up with the holes in the car's frame. I was obliged to attach a nylon rope to one side of the hitch and apply about 100 lb of pull on the rope to force the holes to line up. Time for installation, including dealing with that snag, was about 1.5 hours. 225342

Hitch arrived on time, in great shape. Was relatively simple to install, with all parts provided (took me about 4x the "novice" time, but I'm not used to working on cars and didn't have it lifted). Instructions were specific to my car model, and weren't bad though they could have been more clear. Used this hitch to drive a Uhaul trailer from CA to Chicago using my Prius - it worked wonderfully! 432140

This hitch is great. Customer service was great when ordering, and all came as promised and in a timely manner. Installation was well described and demonstrated in etrailer's video, which was SUPER helpful to see. Took me longer than indicated, but that's typical for my projects as I'm always operating on a shortage of ideal tools (only trick was the tight/awkward access to bolts on Prius undercarriage). Installing wiring package, however, proved to be a little more of a bugger - and this is only reason I'm rating 4 stars vs 5. The video on wiring install shows a slightly older model Prius (2010), and the newer model for which this wiring package also fits (2013) has a wiring arrangement slightly different than what was demonstrated - or at least mine did. It only meant that I had to dig a little deeper, taking off a few more plastic covers inside the car in order to find the appropriate harnesses to plug new kit into. Not necessarily a big deal, except when operating on a tight schedule and in waning light. I was frustrated to find myself scratching my head over a set up that was different than anticipated and indicated in the demonstration video. Only request would be for an updated video demonstration on a newer (or additional) model(s) of Prius for which this harness also works. Otherwise...thanks, etrailer, for a great product and great service! 529304

I ordered the trailer hitch for my 2013 Toyota Prius. As soon as I received it, I decided to install it. I needed a hitch to hook my 3x4 feet aluminum trailer for my mountain bikes. I was disappointed right away because the bolts from the hitch did not match with those of the car. So I contacted customer service for help. Ricky advise me to flex the ends of the trailer hitch because they could have been bent during shipment. I followed his advice and I installed it in 30 minutes. I am very satisfied with the product and I am very impressed with the customer service provided by e-trailer. I did not waste my money on this product. My wife is very excited since now we can use the trailer to transport our bikes. Thank you Raul Aparicio 139871

The Curt hitch is an excellent product. The delivery was very fast, the packaging was minimal, yet very effective, and the hitch was light enough to manage by one person. Installation was done on my 2011 Prius with gracious help from my wife. The car was directly on the ground. Aside from getting the 19mm bolt on the muffler side correctly torqued, the install was fairly easy. The bolt toward the front of the vehicle on the muffler side is not an easy one to reach for enough purchase in order to effectively reach with deep 19mm socket. Either a prop or second set of hands was necessary for me to complete the setup. The purpose for the hitch is to connect the Kuat Beta 2.0 bike rack. 277261

The trailer hitch receiver appears very well-constructed and fits my car nicely. The bolt holes lined up perfectly! It also looks good under the rear bumper. Installation wasn't too hard - I did it by myself in the driveway without even jacking up the car. The only challenge was caused by a plastic panel under my car kind of being in the way on one side - not really a big deal, and this has nothing to do with the hitch itself. I haven't yet used the hitch but so far I'm very happy with the purchase. 268348

Love it! This trailer hitch allows an upright bike rack to attach, with the addition of an adapter, to our hatchback style Prius. It is much sturdier than our old bike rack that leaned against the hatch window. The trailer hitch/bike rack combo allows us to get into the hatch without removing the rack. We travelled across Florida and back, 300 miles, with no problems. Your website was very helpful in determining the proper hitch and installation was easy. Thank you for a great product at a good price. 528773

I haven't had any issues with the update products I ordered. The installation video was perfect, and I've been using it daily. The only thing I think should be different is the weather protection for the four prong wiring harness. Otherwise, no complaints. Thanks for checking up. 474585

I purchase two different products and installed both, back to back. I did not use a jack or a lift, so it took about 45 minutes to finesse this one into/onto my Toyota Prius. I needed a helper (wife) which made it much easier. This is for a bike rack. Ordered Friday and delivered Monday, fast, fast. Thank you. 229876

It has performed as my intended use. I have only used this for attaching a bicycle rack and holding 2 bicycles.

I could not have received a better product or customer support! Not only did Mark suggest a better product than the one I had selected from the (excellent) on-line product listings, but my request to expedite shipping resulted in the trailer hitch arriving a day earlier than promised. The installation instructions were very detailed (included color photos, parts list, torque wrench values, etc.) and the on-line movie was equally excellent. It took me abit longer than I expected (~ 1 hour) to install, but this was my fault for not having all of the right tools laid out and available. The final installed hitch (from Curt) fits like a glove and really looks like OEM. Frankly, the newer design (for my 2014 vehicle) appears to be even stronger ("beefier:) than the hitch (another Curt) which I bought for my same model but earlier 2006 vehicle. Congratulations eTrailer, I will definitely be back for my future trailer hitch requirements. 208720

Since youve had two of these hitches, did you experience much rust or corrosion on the Curt you installed on the 2006 vehicle?

Trailer hitch for 2017 Prius V. Very good price which includes shipping. Well boxed. All required bolts included. Installation was not difficult but I had to figure out how to get the original bolts out that held the muffler support. The tail pipe interfered with a straight extension on the ratchet so I used a universal joint to get around it. As you'll be working on your back for this project I would suggest flattening out some large boxes and work from the comfort of cardboard. You'll slide around much easier , too. The hitch itself is not heavy but near impossible to hold up in place under the car and start the bolts. I used a floor jack to hold the hitch in close proximity and worked from there. I also used a small floor jack to support the muffler when I detached its bracket. That may not be necessary, I didn't want the muffler to droop to far and bend its pipe. Of special note: the bolts you take off the Prius have a 17mm head, the bolts that you put on have a 19mm head. Same diameter thread on both. Actual time to install is probably 60 minutes if you include the taking apart, looking for tools, the drop light, the floor jack and of course, putting the hitch on. If you don't have a floor jack, a friend will suffice to hold the hitch up. Finding a willing friend, however, could add days to the installation so you might want to start there when you order the hitch. The finished product looks good. I chose the Curt hitch because it is made of tubular steel, which to me looks a little cleaner than the square tubing. The hitch fits in from the rear bumper and up under the car so that it is not eye catching. 443710

The hitch worked out wonderfully. Fit very well and easy to install. Your estimate of 30 minutes is about right. I believe it took me only about 20 to 25 minutes to install. Now my wife can take her bike anywhere she would like. Delivery was very prompt. Thank you again for supplying me this product! 147864

It took over 2 hours for install for 2 reasons. First, the tools would not fit around the exhaust system and in the access slot. 3/4 drive equipment was too bulky. Second reason, an Important issue, the heat shield on my 2011 prius extends further aft than the video and to fit the rightside bracket correctly, the bracket must be sandwiched between the shield and the frame. It took alot of time bending the shield to get the bracket installed. The video is wrong, they just clamp on top of the shield and squeeze it against the frame. You don't want heat to transfer to the vehicle because the 12-volt battery is located in that area. 47997

For a 2010 Prius Very well crafted. It is a bit heavier than the other Hitch Receivers on the site, but looks way better. Everything was packaged nicely and came as promised. Install wasn't bad either. I'm slender and fit underneath the car without car ramps and jacks. Just cut out a side of cardboard from the provided box and slide under. At around 45 lb. it's a bit tricky to hold up on your own. So a few house items to prop it up fixed that. 30min install time. MAKE SURE you have 17mm & 19mm DEEP Sockets and 6" extender. 176047

I installed it in 15 minutes with good video and instructions that are provided. Mounting tabs lined up perfectly to OEM holes using their upgraded bolts and washers. Received it in 3 days after they sent me shipping confirmation and tracking number. They should tape foam on the mounting tabs to prevent damage and puncturing through the box. I like how it tucks up and hardly noticeable. 147159

I ordered the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver for my 2013 Toyota Prius. Delivery was quick. The installation was simple and took 35 minutes to complete. Having the right tools helped. Thanks to all in earlier posts to point this out. A 17mm socket was needed to remove existing bolts. A 19mm socket was needed to install new bolts that came with the hitch. Flex head ratcheting wrench in each of these sizes helped a great deal with one bolt near the exhaust that would have been more difficult to get to. Also, the hitch is rather heavy and I could have used a helper hold it up while I worked. Instead, a one gallon paint can fit nicely under the hitch to hold it up while I installed the first bolt. It appears to be a sturdy product. Time will tell. 433838

First, let's make a comment on etrailer's service. I placed my order at 4:40 am. The item was shipped at 7:30 am. UPS attempted delivery the next day mid-morning. What would expedited service look like?!! The Curt hitch is excellent quality. It took a little longer to install than anticipated, but once in it is great looking and very sturdy. The knuckle of the hitch sticks out about an inch to two inches beyond the bumper of my 2010 Toyota Prius. A couple of pictures are attached. 228581

Very high quality and very corrosion resistant after a year's worth of Central Pennsylvania winters (and the road salt). Installation was pretty easy, although having a jack helped a lot when I installed it by myself. The bolts haven't loosened up at all, as it seems. 529646

First etrailer service was speedy and delivery ahead of schedule. Absolutely would buy from them again. This hitch is well made and fits very well. Now, installing it is fairly straightforward BUT (big but) it is probably easy to get an extra set of hands on the ground just to hold the hitch in place while screwing it in. It took me probably one hour to install it on my own..make sure you have a ratchet extension at least 8" long; 17mm and 19mm sockets. They recommend a torque wrench but the recommended setting is pretty high that it is basically as hard as I could tighten it...Have not used it to tow anything yet. 529028

Comments

We do recommend using a torque wrench to get the bolts tightened to the foot lbs in the installation instructions. If you do it by hand the hitch may come loose after use. Many auto parts stores lend out tools so you will not have to buy one in most cases.

Haven't used it much, but it worked great the one time I did. Used to tow a 14' Hobie Cat about 400 miles (round trip), and at boat ramp to launch/recover boat. Intallation: Because access under a Prius is difficult, I had this installed by the local auto shop for around $100. 520223

Easy installation on Prius 2011; took about 90 minutes. Very sturdy. Works well with my swagman 2-bike rack. Thanks. 517040

Perfect fit, thanks for your user-friendly website! And thanks for the timely delivery also. The Curt hitch was easily installed by a local shop that has installed "hundreds" of these on local Priuses. The cargo carrier was pretty simple for this gal to assemble, but would have been even easier if I'd have had a good wrench and another person to assist. It's very sturdy and will be very useful. 512521

The only concern I have with this product is the holes on the trailer hitch and the threads on my Prius frame did not line up. The holes in the hitch were 1/2” too narrow compared to the frame. I ended up hammering on the hitch to make everything line up. Other than that I am happy with the product. 586389

Comments

The mounting flanges of the hitch are deliberately made of steel thats pretty flexible, so that the hitch can flex a bit with the vehicle as it moves. Because of this, its a fairly common occurrence that the mounting flanges get tweaked out of position during shipping or handling. Moving the flanges back into position is pretty simple, as shown in the help article Ill link for you.

One year later. Hitch is holding up great and zero issues to report. Paint is good and no rust. Hauls everything we can't carry in the hatch. 583736

Love this hitch. Tucks away neatly under the Prius and looks like it could be a factory item. Installation was easy with the instruction sheet and video. I bike almost daily and love having my Thule rack always on the car so I can just add a bike and go. 581360

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Is the Required Curt Stabilizing Strap Included with Hitch # 11469 for a 2010 Toyota Prius
  • The Curt Stabilizing Strap, part # 18050, is not included with their hitches. It attaches to the bike rack then to the vehicle to keep the forces exerted on the bike rack and hitch when hitting bumps from damaging the hitch. On passenger cars this can be attached to the edge of the trunk lid that meets rear windshield or on SUVs, you can attach to the top edge of the hatch. The use of a strap is necessary for Curt warranty requirements. You can also use bungee cords like # 3044DAT,...

  • Recommended Hitch for 2012 Toyota Prius V
  • The best hitch for you will depend on what you were wanting to use it for. If you were planning on simply using the hitch as a mount for a bike rack (due to the capabilities of the Class I hitch, you will need a Class I rated bike rack and will be limited to carrying two bikes), the Draw-Tite Class I receiver, part # 24847 would be your best choice. The Curt hitch, # C11276 would also be a fine choice, albeit a bit more expensive. The hitch warranty stipulates that a stabilizing strap...

  • Can the Thule T2 Bike Rack Be Used with a Hitch Adapter in a Class I Hitch on a 2012 Toyota Prius
  • Your best option for carrying 2 bikes would be to use a bike rack that is compatible with Class I hitches. When using a hitch adapter, like part # HTAD, to use a 2 inch accessory in a Class I hitch, the capacity of the hitch is reduced by 50 percent. In your case 110 pounds will exceed 50 percent of the 200 pound capacity of any trailer hitch, like the hitch you referenced, # C11276, available for your 2012 Toyota Prius. I recommend the Thule Doubletrack Pro, # TH9054, which is compatible...

  • What Do Hitches for 2017 Toyota Prius V Weigh

  • Differences Between Curt and Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitches for 2012 Toyota Prius V
  • The Curt # C11276 and the Draw-Tite # 24847 Class I hitches share the same weight capacity, and the installation procedure is fairly similar. In actuality, the Curt weighs about 8 lbs more than the Draw-Tite hitch. The Curt hitch is constructed of round tube steel that's a bit larger in diameter than the square tube stock the Draw-Tite model is constructed of, which would account for the weight difference. Since both hitches have been tested and found to have the same weight bearing capacity,...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitches For 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-In And 2013 Toyota Prius
  • We have one trailer hitch that is designed to work with the 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid. That trailer hitch is the Curt Hitch, part # C11276. This is a Class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. All non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps, like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. The Draw-Tite hitch, part # 60263 is designed to fit the Prius...

  • Hitch Comparison for a 2012 Toyota Prius V Trailer Hitch
  • If you check out the picture I attached you can see what your 2012 Toyota Prius V would look like with either the Draw-Tite Hitch # 24847 or the Curt Hitch # C11276 would look like once installed. As you can see both of them hang about the same distance from the bottom of the vehicle and will be the same in terms of visibility. Both of these hitches will be largely out of plain sight, but will be somewhat visible. Either hitch would work well for you, but Curt recommends that you use...

  • Which Trailer Hitch Has Higher Ground Clearance For a 2012 Toyota Prius V
  • The Draw-Tite Hitch, # 24847, and the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 60263 (no longer available), are basically the same hitch so they both have the same ground clearance and side profile. Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch are sister companies that use the same design process for their trailer hitches. The top of the receiver tube for both trailer hitches will sit 4-3/4 inches below the frame rails on your 2012 Toyota Prius V. If you are planning on using the hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier,...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Toyota Prius V

  • Trailer Hitch Ball Shank Size and Use of Hitch Adaptrers on a 2010 Toyota Prius
  • Class 1 receiver hitches use a 3/4 inch ball shank size. I would recommend item # 19256, for a 1-7/8 inch ball for your hitch or the item # 19258, 2 inch ball. 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch Trailer Hitch adapters like the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver, item # HTAD, are not to be used for towing because the use of an adapter significantly reduces the tongue capacity of the trailer hitch and puts excess stress on the hitch if used for towing due to the extended length...

  • Installation Of Hitch On 2013 Toyota Prius
  • The hitch you need for your Toyota Prius depends on the style of Prius you own. I would first recommend checking either with your owner's manual or with your dealership to find what the towing and tongue weight capacity is for your vehicle. For the Prius or Prius Plug-In Hybrid, I would recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C11276. This is a Class l hitch with a 1-1/4 in receiver. It has a towing capacity of 2000 lbs and a maximum tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs. The installation...

  • Difference Between Curt Hitch # 11276 and # C11276
  • There is no difference, Curt's part number is 11276. We add a C to that part number as we do for all of our Curt products. This hitch would be an excellent choice for your 2013 Toyota Prius. I attached an install video for you to check out also. All non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. For that you would want part # 18050.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid
  • At this time, the only trailer hitch listed as a fit for the 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch, # C11276. The Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch trailer hitches have not been confirmed to fit your vehicle. The Curt hitch is very similar to the Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch trailer hitches. According to Curt, the installation procedure did not vary from the 2010 to the current model, so the install procedure shown in the videos for the 2012 and 2013 Prius would also apply to your 2010 model. • How Many of the Curt Stabilization Straps Are Required with a Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier
  • First, check your vehicle owners manual to make sure it is permissible to use a trailer hitch mount cargo carrier on your 2013 Toyota Prius V. You only need 1 strap, # 18050, to be within the warranty requirements for Curt trailer hitch # C11276. I have included a link to a video showing a typical use of the strap. • Will the Thule Helium Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Fit a 2010 Toyota Prius with a Curt Hitch
  • The Class I trailer hitches have a stop built into them that prevent the accidental use of a Class II accessory. The older versions of the Helium had a longer shank and thus could not fit in a Class I hitch. The new versions will. A Curt trailer hitch, # C11276, should allow the old version to fit. However, the 971 Helium is a 3 bike carrier but on a Class I trailer hitch, you will be limited to carrying just 2 bikes. The reason is that a Class I trailer hitch cannot handle the stress...

But, for the Curt hitch, when using the hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier you must use stabilization strap # 18050 per the Curt warranty requirements.
