Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 1998 BMW 3 Series - Curt

All right. Today, it's 1998 BMW 3 Series, we're going to install part number 11177 from Curt. This is what the hitch looks like once installed on the car. Next, we'll go ahead and give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as the bike rack or a cargo carrier. On top of receiver opening down to the ground will be 11 inches and from the center of the hitch pinhole to the edge of the bumper will be about 3-1/4 inches. Now, we'll go and show you how the hitches installed.

Okay, first thing that we need to do is get in the trunk and remove the spare tire. Some models have an omissions, charcoal canister and spare tire well, so raise the tire, we'll have to remove it's dome-shaped cover. Now, if the carbon canister's exposed, we'll go ahead and lose them, put clips to hold the lines in place, then will take it and raise it up to the center post, and move it forward and lean well. In that way, it gives enough room to drill our holes to attach our hitch in the trunk pan. All right.

Now, we'll go ahead and remove the lower bumper fascia. There's a fastener on each end of the fascia towards the bottom. It's like a plastic rivet, so we'll go ahead and pull up the center and pull up the fastener. Repeat on Opposite Side Then we'll pull back on the fascia a little bit, and then pop it out from the rest of the bumper cover. Next, we can go ahead and put the hitch into place.

We'll hold it up in the center of the vehicle. You can see how the hitch is designed to fit in between the ribs of the trunk pan. We'll set it up between the ribs and we'll go ahead and mark our holes, then we can go ahead and draw our holes. Now, the drill bit that we're going to use will be 3/8 of an inch. Now, the two lower holes we can see behind the bumper, we'll drill those out first and the remaining holes in the trunk pan.

Okay, four holes drilled out in the trunk pan, we'll go ahead and install a hardware. Looking from the inside of the trunk pan, you'll see the four holes we drilled. The two holes going towards the front, will get the long block. Will also put a seal around the holes to prevent fumes or water from getting inside the vehicle. We'll put the block in place and install our hardware with two bolts, and now two holes that are towards the bumper, we'll get a large flat washer and the bolt, and go through. Okay, will go underneath the vehicle and install the flange nuts, and then we'll go ahead and snug them down. Will also install the two bolts going from the trunk pan and sideways behind the bumper. We'll install those, we'll also put some seal around that, and that install the stiffener plate behind those bolts, and we'll use that or a tin plate to drill out the rest of the holes, and install the same type of hardware. The stiffener bar at the bottom of the trunk pan, we'll use it as a template to drill out two additional more holes and install the same type of hardware. Okay, now, four of our hardware are installed, we'll go ahead and tighten now the bolts then torque them down as specified in the instructions. All right. Now, go ahead and bridge the installer into your components and then the fascia on the outside, and there you have it for part number 11177 from Curt on our 1998 BMW 3 Series.

This kit came complete and it was a breeze to install. After watching the video online, I had mine installed in less than an hour. I could have done faster if the neighbor didn't come over to talk to me. One suggestion is to add extension bar to the bottom bracket to reinforce it more, but only if you need more tongue strength. Great product. 88681

Thank you for your interest in my BMW Hitch installation. The hardest part was determining how to remove the plastic lower fascia on the car. As for the hitch itself, assembly was quite easy. In fact, if the hitch came with two way tape, the alignment and assembly would have been spot on. I recently purchased the trailer to transport my two bikes or lawn tractors. The hitch receiver does rattle due to excessive clearance when towing the trailer empty, but does quiet down when weight is added to the trailer. My BMW is a 328 and has good power. 39711

Easy to install. Kinda skeptical about it mounting to the spare tire well but time will tell. 657956

Well I am happy to say that my trailer hitch has worked perfectly. It has allowed me to take my bike to the beach boardwalk after work on the back of my BMW 323ic convertible. It has really been a blessing to me and I want to thank the amazingly talented experts at etrailer for the amazing design and easy installation.

1998 BMW M3

I purchased this hitch and had my mechanic install it on my E36 M3 (it's 1998 4-door.) As noted in the instructions that come with the hitch, the mechanic did have to cut a little plastic out of the rear panel that's under the bumper in order to install it. The area that needed cuttring is underneath the car and not visible once the hitch is installed. The hitch does not pose any ground clearance issues (which was my main concern as my M3 is already very low.) The hitch doesn't hang any lower than the stock muffler already does. The hitch arrived in good condition with all necessary parts needed for installation. Just as a heads up, this kit doesn't come with a wiring kit for brake lights; in my case, this was perfectly fine since I'm using the hitch for a bike rack and don't intend to tow a trailer with brake lights. The hitch arrived quickly; it was delivered much earlier than expected. Overall, it's a great hitch. It looks good, is small, unobtrusive, and gets the job done. A+ 94612

We purchased the hitch for our 1997 BMW 3 series to transport our bicycles on a bike rack.. The hitch arrived complete with all parts and also all bolts and nuts needed. It installed without problems. The hitch clears the bumper and trim on the car. I did need to remove a piece of trim on the bumper (easy) during installation and put it back when done. I took a bunch of pictures and will send a second email with them attached. Ken 79155

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation that Fits 1994 BMW 325i Convertible
We have the Curt hitch part # C11177 that is a confirmed fit for your 1994 BMW 325i convertible and would have enough capacity for the trailer weights you mentioned as it has a capacity of 2,000 lbs. Only BMW will be able to tell you if your vehicle is rated for towing though. I wish we could give you an exact hitch height figure for this but we do not have that dimension. For a ball mount then you'd want the part # C45521 which has a rise of 3-1/4 inches, hitch ball # A-82 for a 2 inch...

  • Trailer Hitch And Bike Carrier Recommendation For 1999 BMW 323is Coupe
The trailer hitch that is designed for your 1999 BMW 323is Coupe is the Curt Hitch, part # C11177. This is a Class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. A technical note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050 Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch you can...

  • Will Thule TH9003PRO 2-Bike Platform Type Trunk-Mount Bike Carrier Fit 1997 BMW 328 Convertible
The Thule Raceway Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9003, will fit on your 328 convertible since it mounts to the bumper and trunk in the same way as hanging type carriers. However, the weight of this very sturdy carrier (about 48 lbs) plus that of the two loaded bikes (up to 35 lbs per bike) makes for a significant load on the rear bumper cover and trunk of your 328 convertible. I suggest instead a hanging-type trunk-mount carrier that weighs substantially less than the Raceway...
