Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Today we are going to be installing hitch part number 11070 from Curt on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. We are underneath the vehicle now and we are going to go ahead and point out the mounting locations for the trailer hitch. Here on the passengers side, you can see we have got a tow loop. And we have got one hole here, and on some models you will have the second hole here as well. We are going to use these as two attaching points for the hitch on the passengers side. And then, over here on the drivers side, we are going to be drilling four holes into the side of the spare tire well. So the first thing you want to do is to remove any components that you may have in the spare tire well. And then we will come back down here, and we will put the hitch up over the passengers side and then drill our holes. Over here on the drivers side, before we get going I am going to go ahead and lower the exhaust down to gain more room to drill my holes in the side of the trunk well. You can see we have got one large hanger here. We just need to take this stud off of the rubber portion. To do this, I am going to use a little spray lubricant, like a WD-40. And I am also going to lower the one here at the forward side by doing the same thing.

OK, we are going to go ahead and put the hitch up into position now. And again, I am going to start by mounting at the rearmost hole, using the 1/2-inch bolt and the handle nut. We are just going to take the handle nut and slide it through the opening at the top, feed the hex bolt up and through there and just tighten them together. Then what we can do with that fastener in place is go ahead and center the hitch up and make sure it is nice and straight. And then we can go ahead and mark out the other holes that need to be drilled. Then we will pull the hitch down and drill those out and put the hitch back up into position. OK, now that we have got the holes drilled here in the side of the spare tire well, I am going to come inside and put our hardware through, and then we can go back outside and remount our hitch.

And then we just want to add the 3/8 nut onto the bolts here. We are just going to leave those just hand tightened for the time being, until we get the other fasteners in over here on the passengers side. I just want to realign the handle nut again, and then we will come back through and drill out our hole here at the bottom side. OK, and with that hole drilled, you can see I went ahead and ped the hardware down and through. We just want to add the 3/8 nut down here at the bottom of the hitch. OK, now we can go back through and torque all the bolts down. I am going to start by doing the ones here on the drivers side, on the side of the spare tire well, and we will come back and torque those last. OK, and with all the bolts torqued down, our installation is complete. You want to make sure you put your exhaust back up on its hanger if you had removed them earlier. And this will conclude the installation of hitch part number 11070 on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta.

Still works great! Between the Smyth ute conversion (I installed the hitch while I was cutting the car and had easy access) and the flatbed trailer I’ve hauled furniture, motorcycles, and all kinds of stuff. Nothing has loosened or bent at all! 528624

I'll be the first to say it. Mounting a hitch to a Jetta/Golf is sketchy. They say it's good for 200lb tongue weight and 2000lb load capacity; had I not tested it myself I would never have believed it. Four (3/8") bolts through the spare tire well on the left side, one 1/2" bolt and one 3/8" bolt on the right side. All through thin sheet metal. The install direction leave something to be desired. They tell you to square it to the car but there are no easy reference points to square to. I ended up using a magnetic level attached to the hitch, bolting the 1/2" side in and jacking the left side up till level. Then I shot a line down from trunk latch (theoretically center of the trunk) and slightly adjusted center on the hitch. To make sure it was square, I measured from the front of the receiver to the rear of each fenderwell (metal not plastic). I was out 1/32 of an inch so OK. The center of the receiver is your only reference point as nothing else is identical left or right of the receiver. I used black rtv silicone to seal the bolt holes. After install I am a big guy and stood/jumped on the hitch after installing (I'm 300+ lbs.) and no problems stood out. The only thing I didn't like was the 3/8" bolt on the left side deformed the tire well when torquing down to spec. A bigger washer should have been provided here. It's first test came in the form of a 5x8 open trailer with ~900lbs of rain soaked sheetrock. I should say I also used a euro drawbar (does a better job of keeping the trailer level on the low car) and the recommended light harness which I would not recommend for the average user to install (reviewed seperatly C-56175). The trailer is ~500lbs empty. 10 miles round trip to the county dump and back. Up to 60 mph and stop and go and lights. Braking distance was obviously longer (no trailer brakes) and you can definitely feel the trailer (5 speed 1.8 gas turbo car). When I got home I looked for stress cracks, bends and re-torqued all the bolts for piece of mind. The instructions recommend re-torquing the bolts all the time. They should have provided locking washers with the kit or lock nuts, I may change the nuts out or put locking washers on when I get a chance for a little more piece of mind. All in all for the price and since I sold my truck the convenience of being able to tow both my trailers around without having two vehicles is great benefit to me. 179035

Great product! Has worked flawlessly and I'm very happy with it. It was also easy to install. Installed on a 2005 Jetta and has been used only for a Thule bike rack. 625461

Easy to install. Haven't had a chance to pull anything. But seems stout. Only thing I'd probably add is a plate to the inside of the trunk pan on the vertical bolted side. 581470

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon
  • We do have a trailer hitch that fits your 2003 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon but # C11070 does not fit. Instead you can use Curt trailer hitch # C11083. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any...

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
  • Both the Curt and the Draw-Tite Class I hitches for your vehicle are very similar in appearance and function. When installed, the receiver on either model would sit just below the bottom of the rear bumper. The available ground clearance below the receiver would be very similar with both models. The main discernible difference between the models is the finish on the hitch itself. The Curt model uses a finish that is much more glossy in appearance. In a vehicle such as yours, the average...

  • Will the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 24748, Fit a Gas Turbo Model 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8 Turbo
  • Actually, all of the available hitches for any model of the 2002 VW Jetta have the same rating. They are rated for 200 pounds tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight. However, they are not interchangeable among models. The mounting locations between models are different. The hitches are designed accordingly based on subtle differences in mounting locations under the vehicle. For a gas turbo model, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 11070. It comes with a...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta GLS
  • The reason the Curt Hitch part # C11070 that you referenced won't fit a GLI is because the GLI models have OEM ground effects. The GLS models do not have the ground effects so the # C11070 would fit. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. • Is the Installation Process the Same on a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta as a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta
  • Yes, the installation video of the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 11070, on the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta is the same for your 2003 Volkswagen Jetta. According to Curt there were no changes in the installation process for this hitch between those years. • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Wiring For 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
  • If you have the letter 'M' in the 8th position of your VIN, the trailer hitch I recommend for your 1999 Jetta is part # C11070. This is a Class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. If your Jetta is the GLI model with the ground effects package the hitch will not work for you. If you have an 'H' in the 8th position of the VIN, the hitch I recommend is part # C11010. This is also a Class l hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. None of these trailer hitches come...

  • Do I Need to Lower Exhaust on 1999 Volkswagen Jetta TDI in Order to Install Curt Hitch 11070
  • In order to install Curt Hitch, part # 11070, you will need to undo the exhaust, probably just at the rearmost rubber hanger. This will provide some room to manipulate the hitch into place, and easier access to holes when tightening bolts.
