Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2004 Volkswagen Golf

Today on our 2004 Volkswagen Golf, we're going to install curt hitch part number 11066. And here are a couple of measuments that will assist you in selecting accessories for the new hitch set to the bike rack or a cargo carier. The center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 8 and 1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground it's 9 and 3/4 inches. Now let's go ahead with the installation. We've already gone ahead and removed the spare tire, now we need to lower the exhaust.

We are going to put a little spray of lubricant on the exhaust hanger then go ahead and remove it. Quick tech tip, lower the exhaust more and give yourself more access and room to maneuvre. You can remove the exhaust hanger just forward of the muffler. Again we'll use a little spray of lubricant and remove the rubber hanger. Now the exhaust lowered as far as it can go as it sits on the axle, we're ready to go on to our next step.

Now it's a good idea to gain an extra set of hands that will be holding the hitch in place as you line it up with the specified holes and instructions. Once I get it lined up, I'm going to go ahead and use a jack and a pry bar to hold the hitch in position while I use the hitch as a template and drill out my holes. Now we're going to take our block and put it in position. It's going to sit above the hitch underneath the trunk panel. Now our hardware for this attachment point will be the long 3 ace bolt and large fender washer.

We're going to take these two and drop them from the inside down. Before I do that I'm going to add a bead of silicon around the edge of the fender washer to have sealed the hole and keep out any more shoot dirt debris and exhaust gases remaining in the cabin of the vehicle. We'll use the hex knot to fasten the bolt underneath. For the forward attachment point, we're going to drill out to a half inch hole so again we'll start with a small pit of the fire hole and drill it out to a half inch hole. As it go up through the hitch as a template to the tall loop and into the trunk pane.

Our hardware on the passenger side is going to be a large half inch washer and a handle knot on the inside of the trunk pane. Again we'll put a bead of silicon around the washer. From underneath, we'll feed a half inch bolt and a half inch conical tooth washer. Now with our hardware in position on the passenger side, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. With passenger side tighten up, we'll move on to the driver side where we use the hitch as a template once again to drill out the holes into the trunk pane. Now we've got all the driver's side passing point drilled out. We're going to go ahead and install our fender washer and 3 ace bolt. Then we'll install our plunge knot on the outside. Just as we did on the passenger side, each one of the driver's side, will also get silicon around the washer to help seal the hole. With all the bolts in place in the trunk, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Now with each one of our fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque the specifications as indicated in the instructions. All right with our hitch in place, we can go ahead and re install the exhaust. With our exhaust reinstalled, that will complete the installation of our curt hitch part number 11066 on our 2004 Volkswagen Golf.

Easy install. Watch the [online video] Have a angle drill to drill the upright mount holes. Other than that. Super easy and great quality and communication from etrailer. 678188

Chevrolet SS

Installation was pretty seamless, except for the 1/2 X1-1/4" bolt being too short, replaced with 2" SS. May have been because the hole ended up too close to the spare tire well corner. The other item not mentioned was the muffler heat guard was slightly in the way but easily bent out of the way. Can't wait to pull my 50 ft yacht, lol. 421142

good price and great fit 405289

2003 Volkswagen Golf

I like this hitch a lot, although mounting it to a Golf is definitely an involved operation. There are no stock hitch mounting options on the golf and so you must drill into the spare tire case for install. It's just not something you do at home unless you have a good variety of tools and a couple hydraulic jacks. I took it to a local installer and they mounted it for about $80, but they mounted it a little crooked, which means I'm pretty much hosed if I want to straighten it. Oh well. Otherwise the mount has been zero issues and strong like bull. It's probably the best option on the market if you want a hitch rack on your Mk4 Golf. 380984

nice hitch, easy install but the washers for the bolts inside the spare tire well were too thin and soft. replaced them with thicker body washers 144847

2001 Volkswagen GTI

I've got an VW 2001 MKIV GTI. Install went smoothly, just rolled the car onto a set of ramps and it goes right in. Make sure you have a jack or a good buddy to hold the hitch in place when installing. As far as the quality of the product it is very good so far. Also, the quality of service from trailer is of the best for any business I have felt with. I would recommend to a friend. Thanks, Tim M 106534

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Could Curt Hitch For 2002 Volkswagen Golf Fit with Aftermarket Exhaust
  • If you check out the picture I attached that shows the Curt hitch part # C11066 installed you can see that it fits pretty far away from the factory exhaust which is the only configuration it's been tested on. Comparing this picture to what you vehicle looks like will be the best way to determine if the hitch will fit with the exhaust.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Volkswagen GTI
  • CURT indicates that Trailer Hitch, # 11066, will fit the 2004 Volkswagen GTI turbo, 2 door coupe/hatchback model. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view. If you plan on doing some towing the hitch comes with the correct ball mount, pin, and clip. For a ball you can use # A-80 or # A-82. For trailer wiring, use # 119190KIT. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view.

  • How to Use Stabilizing Strap on a 2000 VW Beetle with a Curt Hitch and Thule T2 Classic Bike Rack
  • Yes, the stabilizing strap you will need is the Curt Bike Rack Strap with Cambuckle, # 18050. I have added a photo detailing how the strap is normally used on bike racks. On the Thule T2 Classic Platform Rack, # TH9045, you will need to run the strap down to the main support tube at the center of the rack, and then back up to the trunk lip or other suitable location. For your 2000 VW Beetle you will need to check the owners manual to be sure the bikes and rack do not exceed the weight...

  • Will the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11066 fit a 1999 VW New Beetle TDI
  • Yes, the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11066 that you referenced will fit your 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle TDI. This hitch is confirmed to fit all model Beetles except for Turbo (turbo gas engine) models. You have a turbo diesel so your vehicle is compatible. I attached installation instructions and an install video for you to check out.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier For 2003 Volkswagen GTI
  • We have just what you are looking for. If you do not already have a trailer hitch on your 2003 GTI I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # C11066. This is a Class l trailer hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. Per Curt all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. The cargo carrier I recommend...

  • Hitch Recommendation 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle TDI
  • You would want a Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch # 60902. This hitch is compatible with all of the turbo model 2002 Volkswagen New Beetles except for the Turbo S and should work very well for you. I attached installation instructions for this product for you to check out also. • Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Volkswagen Golf to Tow Small Camper
  • The Curt Hitch part # C11066 that you referenced has been confirmed as a fit for your 2004 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The hitch itself has the towing capacities of 2,000 lbs trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight. As long as your trailer stays under this figure and the towing capacities that are listed for your vehicle in the owners manual you would be good to go. • Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2001 VW Beetle
  • For your 2001 VW Beetle, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # C11066 is the correct fit as long as you don't have the Turbo. There is not a fit for the Turbo model. If you are using this hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier you will also need stabilization strap # 18050. If you don't want to be required by warranty to use that strap, then you can instead use the Draw-Tite # 24679. If you will be doing light towing, I recommend the Upgraded Circuit...

  • Need Help with Curt Class I Hitch # C11066 Installation on 2001 Volkswagon New Beetle
  • We do have an installation video for Curt hitch # C11066 that I have linked for you. This shows the hitch being installed in a 2004 VW Golf, not a New Beetle, but since the frames of the two vehicles are the same you should find some useful help in the video. Do note that it can happen that in shipment of a hitch rough handling by the carrier can cause a bit of twisting or distortion of the mounting flanges which have the mounting holes. It may be necessary to apply a little force to...

  • Can Stabilization Strap # 18050 for Curt Trailer Hitches be Attached to Glass Hatch on VW Beetle
  • I do not recommend using the hook on stabilization strap # 18050 on glass because it could end up damaging the glass on your 1999 VW New Beetle. What you could do, instead of using the hook part, is to replace it with strap # Y02623 or hook the hook part to the loop of this strap. The Yakima strap has that padded cylinder that would be inside the vehicle. This will disperse the weight/force on the glass over a wider area.
