Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Chevrolet Express Van - Curt

Today on our 2017 Chevrolet Express van, we will be installing the Curt class four trailer hitch receiver, part number 14090. Now here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see it's nice and tucked up underneath our bumper cover here. It's also recessed back behind our bumper so when we're going to load cargo into the back of our van we don't have to worry about running our shin or knee into the back of the hitch hurting ourselves. Now, this hitch has a nice high gloss black powder coat finish throughout it's entire construction. It will provide us with many years of rust free and corrosion free service. Welded onto the bottom of our hitch on the frame here and the receiver, we have our safety chain plate with the loops here to connect our safety chains to. At the side of our receiver, we have our industry standard five eighths of an inch diameter hitch pin hole here to secure whatever hitch mounted accessory we may have.

At the end of our receiver, we have a nice welded on collar here to improve the looks of our hitch and that gives us some added strength. Now this hitch has a one thousand pound max tongue weight rating and a ten thousand pound gross trailer weight rating. If we're using weight distribution with our trailer, the max tongue weight rating increases to twelve hundred pounds and a max gross trailer weight rating increases to twelve thousand pounds. You'll want to consult with the owner's manual of your Chevrolet Express and see what the vehicle is rated for. You don't want to exceed the capabilities of the van itself or the hitch itself. You want to go by whatever number is less. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessory you may need such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier.

You're look at about four inches from the center of hitch pin hole to the rear most part of the back bumper and about eighteen inches from the ground to the top of the class four two inch receiver opening. Here's the installation hardware that comes with our hitch. We have six of these spacer blocks here and six carriage bolts. These blocks will sit inside our frame, the bolt will drop through it and be held in place. Once we have all six of these in place, we'll raise the hitch up and we'll secure it with six flange nuts. Now that we've gone over what's included with the hitch, let's get the hardware installed and then we can install the hitch. Okay so we're on the driver's side frame rail of our vehicle.

These two holes that are on the back, we'll be using those and they'll be using the rear most hole here towards the front. Take our plate, drop a bolt on down, stick it inside the frame rail, do the same for all three of those locations and repeat the same process for the passenger side. Okay with all of the hardware in place, we'll grab an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch on up in position and secure it with the flange nuts. Okay with all of our hardware in place on our driver's side, we'll make sure we have all of our hardware in place on the passenger side. Okay we'll snug down all of our hardware with a three quarter inch socket. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the specifications found in the instructions.

We'll repeat the same process on the other side and that completes our installation of the Curt class four trailer hitch receiver, part number 14090 on our 2017 Chevrolet Express van.

VERY EASY INSTALLATION. ..THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR PROMPT DELIVERY. 207840

The bolt plates that go inside the frame were too short to keep the bolts from spinning while tightening the nuts. This prevented me using a regular torque wrench to get the correct torque. Instead I was forced to use an impact wrench to tighten them down because it would do it without spinning the bolts. If I didn't have an impact and had to do it by hand it would have been much more difficult. Otherwise it should work as needed. 446044

My Chevy Express is a 3500 series so I needed a Class IV hitch to tow heavier loads. This hitch weighs just under 50 lbs and was almost too easy to install. Save yourself the money and install this yourself. Curt is known for manufacturing solid well built hitches. You can't go wrong with this hitch! 215440

One year later and the hitch is as solid as ever and performs as expected on both light and heavy loads.

Great fit and solid unit. Replaced an existing hitch that ws poorly made. Easy install and looks good on the van. Does not extend beyond the back of the bumper so no more painful shin hits. Use the shipping box to slide the hitch under the van to avoid scratching the paint on the hitch and raise it to make the install a one person job. Could have bought the lighter duty hitch from the same company due only pulling a small trailer, but over rating never hurts except for the additional weight. 201589

The hitch arrived very quickly and it was well packaged. After removing it from the box, there were a few spots where the finish had chipped on the edges. The installation was easy and straight forward. I did have to remove my existing hitch so that took a bit of time. Another reviewer made comments about the square hole spacers not being long enough. They certainly could be longer, but I had no issues with the installation. I will say the hitch included 6 bolts, spacers and nuts, but is drilled with 8 holes, 4 per side. The two rearward holes on both sides lined up perfectly. The two forward holes do not line up with the existing holes in the frame and the instructions have you use only the most rearward of the forward holes which to line up. This works, but why provide a hitch with 8 holes drilled with two holes not in the right location and only 6 sets of hardware? Part of the reason I bought this hitch is because of the 8 holes. I believe either this hitch should be modified to fit all 8 holes and and include 8 sets of hardware, or the extra 2 holes should be removed. 459328

Comments

The hitch held up well over the winter and the finish got chewed up on the forward edge of the crossmember last summer. I did a few thousand miles on dirtgravel. The finish as mentioned is chipped badly now. I coated it in plastidip. Well see how it holds up.

I ordered this for my ’08 Express 3500 Van that came from Chevrolet with an OEM heavy duty hitch receiver, option Z82. The van is rated to tow 10,000 lbs but the receiver Chevy supplied is rated for 4000 lbs, 10,000 with weight distribution. 4000 lbs? That’s WEAK! So I ordered this Curt hitch receiver to replace it. I removed the Chevy receiver and had this one on in about 20 minutes. It fit perfectly using the existing holes in the frame. It sits about a half inch higher than the Chevy receiver but there are no clearance issues. I also ordered the Pollak GM Replacement 7-pole socket, mounting bracket and long no-drill bracket to complete the installation. Shipping was FAST! 63441

On the positive side, the workmanship of the Curt hitch is flawless, and it fits my vehicle perfectly. On the negative side, I wasn't entirely impressed with the installation kit. As a manufacturer, it's probably not possible to cover every possible contingency the end user might encounter during installation, so maybe it is a little unfair to expect no trouble. Nevertheless, I was a little bit surprised when the "square hole spacers" included in the Curt installation kit, those 1/4" x 1.5" x 2" stamped steel deals that receive the carriage bolts, and whose dimensions are calculated such that the spinning spacer will interfere with the vehicle's frame webs (the vertical part of the frame cross section) enabling the installer to tighten the flange nuts without having to get a wrench on the bolt, were 1/4" too short and, you guessed it, spun! I guess the idea is that it should be easier for the installer to use the carriage bolt / square hole spacers than it would be to get a wrench onto a standard hex bolt. Of course, the spacer would have to be long enough to prevent the carriage bolt from spinning. Oh well, I was able to jamb a piece of steel in the gap between the frame web and the spacer and eventually get all six flange nuts / bolts tightened. The powder coating, under load from the the serrated bases of the flange nuts, peeled immediately. I have a nice new Chevy Express van, and I'm sure that the first rust stains on my driveway will be from the now-bare metal around the six mounting points. Oh well, maybe I'm fooling myself. I guess I would rather have an installation that I never had to recheck, never had to re-torque the bolts, and never had to worry about my hitch falling loose and my trailer passing me up at the next 4-way stop. If a little rust shows up on my driveway three years from now, so be it. Good product, and I would buy it again. But for a couple of extra bucks for higher quality powder coating, and a little more attention to the installation kit, Curt would have a first class product. 131110

Vehicle: 2015 Chevy Express 3500 Extended Wheelbase Passenger (15-pass) Install: Fits perfectly. Install was just about as easy as the videos on this site. A couple notes to consider: Before starting, take a wire brush to both sides of the frame to get off any rust/debris (underside and inside where you put the bolts). Then take some compressed air and blow the areas out. This will make the tightening process a little easier. The instructions in the box said to torque to 110 lb-ft and the nuts were 3/4 inch. You will need a deeper socket to do this well. These are the little details that would be nice to have in the product specs. 638845

Nice looking heavy duty hitch, rated better than the van is rated for. My only real issue was, like others have said, the plates that go in the frame are too small to prevent the bolts from turning while tightening. I had 1 or 2 that torqued all the way, the others I had to hit with with an impact. Oh, just realized my pic shows a plastic plug in the hitch, that's not included, just one that I had laying around so I popped it in. 593830

Like other Curt custom-fit receivers I've installed, some tweaking was required to line up the mounting points. However, they are strong and well made. Probably stronger than the frames of the older vehicles I've put them on. What really impressed me was Etrailer.com's pricing, selection and prompt shipping. I placed my order after 5PM and was very surprised to see my items the next day. 584872

Hitch fit perfectly and install was a breeze. I originally purchased one from a local store that, according to the salesman there, would fit my needs and meet the weight requirements for my trailer. Needless to say, It did not. So I went back to Etrailer, where I previously purchased a tow bar and towing hitch, and got the right one that fits my vehicle and had the proper weight range for my trailer. It arrived a day later than I was expecting, due to UPS doesn’t include Saturday as a shipping day, but George at Etrailer took care of me and I got it moments before I had to leave for the trip. Because of the perfect fit, I got it on quickly with just a single ratchet. If you want exceptional parts that fit right the first time, use Etrailer. I’ll never go anywhere else again. 490091

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2010 Chevy Express 2500 Van
  • Since the cost of the Curt Class IV trailer hitch # 14090 is comparable to some of the other Class III hitches that are available for your 2010 Chevy Express 2500 I would go with it. Basically, you never know what you might need to tow so it is better to have the capacity and not need it than to need it and not have it! Since you plan on doing some towing I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK2216. It comes with a ball mount with a 1 inch rise or 2 inch drop, a 2 inch ball...

  • Distance from Frame to Cross Tube and Dimensions of Cross Tube for Curt Trailer Hitch 14090
  • I measured Curt trailer hitch # 14090 for you. From the top of the mounting flanges to the top of the cross tube is 2-1/16 inches. The cross tube itself is 2-1/2 inches square. This hitch was designed for 1996 to 2018 Chevy Express and GMC Savana cargo and passenger vans.

  • Availability of Trailer Hitch With 7000 lb + Towing Capacity for 2015 Chevy Express 2500
  • We sure do! I'd recommend the Curt Class IV hitch, part # 14090. This hitch has a 10,000 lb towing/1000 lb tongue weight capacity and is a confirmed fit for your 2015 Chevy Express. Since it sounds like you'll be towing with your Van, you'll need some other items to complete your towing system. For a trailer wiring harness, you'd begin with a # 118392 4 pole trailer connector. If your trailer doesn't have brakes on it, that's all the wiring you'll need to do but if it does have electric...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2005 Chevy Express 2500 3/4 Ton Van
  • The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver w/ Cast Center - Custom Fit - Class V - 2" # 41946 is a confirmed fit for your 2005 Chevy Express van but the measurements are correct. This hitch does require drilling to install rounding out the holes, so that may account for the difference. My recommendation for you is to use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class IV - 2" # 14090 which measures 40 inches wide on center. This hitch requires no drilling for installation....

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2012 GMC Savana Extended
  • Yes, the frames of the vehicles are the same at the rear of a 2012 GMC Savana Van standard and extended length so the Class IV hitches like the part # 14090 would fit just fine. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch 14090 Fit a 2006 GMC Savana High-Top Explorer Conversion Van
  • Curt shows that trailer hitch # 14090 will fit all models of the 2006 GMC Savana 1500 and 2500. For the 3500 they only show it as a fit for the standard cargo van. Assuming that you have either a 1500 or 2500 and the conversion was a factory option then the hitch will fit. Curt lists hitch # C15320 as a fit for all models of the 2006 GMC Savana 1500, 2500, and 3500.

  • Will the Curt Trailer Hitch 14090 Fit Around a Full Size Spare Tire on a 2000 GMC Savana 1500
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt, the manufacturer, about whether or not the Hitch, # 14090, will fit around the spare on your 2000 GMC Savana 1500. He indicated that it will fit. To be sure, I had him give me the hitch measurements. The width between the two brackets is about 37 inches. As long as the diameter of your tire is less than that 37 inches, it will fit. I have attached the directions for this hitch below. I have included a video of a similar hitch and a similar vehicle...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2003 Chevy Express Cutaway Van with School Bus Body
  • To use a hitch to tow with your 2003 Chevy Express van, it needs to mount to the frame at the rear underside of the vehicle to provide the necessary stability. If holes are not already there to install the hitch to you can look at a custom option drilling holes. The hitch manufacturer will likely not honor a warranty with such an install. I measured the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class IV - 2" # 14090 hitch that is the same dimensions as # C15320 measuring the width...
