Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Nissan Murano - Curt

Today on our 2014 Nissan Murano, we're going to be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 13577. Now here's what our hitch looks like on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground we have approximately fifteen and a quarter inches. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper, we have approximately four and a half inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. Now before we begin our installation, we're going to need install a safety strap up underneath the exhaust.

Next we're going to need to remove four rubber exhaust hangers in order to lower our exhaust down to give ourself 00:00:53 a little more working room. We'll go ahead and begin over here on the driver's side and point out the exhaust hangers that we need to remove. There's one here, one here, one right here and then over here on the passenger's side there's one more, right here. In order to remove the rubber exhaust hangers, we're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant and a large pry bar. Now with the rubber exhaust hangers removed, we'll go ahead and use our safety strap to lower the exhaust down some. Next we're going to need to remove the tow hook that's located over on the driver's side.

To remove the tow hook, we'll need to take out four bolts. There's one here, one here, here, and here. Next let's go ahead and point out our mounting locations that we'll be using to install our hitch. Now there will be a total of five mounting locations, three over here on the driver's side and two on the passenger's side with one here, here, and right here. Now we'll move over to the passenger's side, the locations are here and here. Now before you try and install your hitch, it's a good idea to take a little bit of spray lubricant and a nylon tube brush to clean out each of the threads on the existing weld nuts. The nylon tube brush we'll be using is part number 814092. You want to go ahead and repeat this same process at all five mounting locations.

It's a good idea once you've clean out the threads to make sure that the bolt threads in easily. Next let's go over the hardware that we'll be using to secure our hitch to the vehicle. For the two rear mounting locations on the driver's side as well as both mounting locations on the passenger's side, we'll be using a twelve millimeter bolt and a half inch conical tooth washer making sure that the teeth on the washer face toward the hitch when installed. Now for the forward mounting location right here in on the driver's side we will be reusing one of the four bolts that we removed taking the tow hook off. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. With the hitch raised up into position, we'll go ahead and install our hardware loosely.

Followed by making sure that the hitch is centered on the vehicle. Once we know the hitch is centered, we can go ahead and tighten down the hardware and torque it to the manufacturer's specification. Now that we have our hitch torqued down, we can go ahead and raise our exhaust back up into position and re-install the four rubber exhaust hangers. Now a quick tech 00:04:57 tip, the passenger's side rubber exhaust hanger, now we took it off this hanger here when we removed it but it will help if you take it off the hanger that stayed on the body like this and then re-install it on to the muffler first, then you can swing it up and onto the inaudible 00:05:23 just like that. It will go on much easier that way. We'll then go ahead and continue putting the rest of our exhaust hangers back on. With our rubber exhaust hangers back up into position we can go ahead and remove our safety strap and that will do it for the installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 13577 on our 2014 Nissan Murano. .

WOW!!! A perfect fit for our Nissan Murano CrossCabrolet . My girlfriend and I installed in in about 20 minutes. We did not remove the exhaust. I cleaned the holes on frame with a battery terminal brush, the hardest part. It's a little tight working around the exhaust, but easier than letting it down. We bought a cargo carrier to haul extra anything and have a bike rack. Also pull jet skis, about 1,500 lbs. a great solution. 616048

Got it, installed it myself. It took two tries. The first ended when the mounting bolts wouldn't go in the frame due to some rust buildup on the threads in the frame. Fortunately, the instructions included a reference to the size of tap needed to clean the threads (the wire brush and WD-40 weren't sufficient). I visited 5 stores before I found the tap, and then I packed it in for the night. Try #2 took just under an hour. Lowered the muffler to get more room - did this on the driveway with no ramps or anything to raise the car. Love the instructions and video - it makes it so much easier to know what to do. 505770

The Curt trailer hitch fits and looks great on my 2009 Nissan Murano. The unexpected problem with the install is 3 of the 4 needed bolt holes in the frame of the vehicle were corroded from road exposure, preventing threading of the bolts. To correct this, I purchased a 12mm -1.25 metric tap and T-handle tap wrench (from Menards for around $15 total). I did have to lower the exhaust assembly (per the instructions) to gain access to use the tap. With use of a spray lubricant, the tap cleaned out the threads without much difficulty. Just get it straight when you start and it works well. Took a total of about 90 minutes in all with the failed attempts to insert the bolts on the first try, then tapping of the 3 bolt holes. 144622

Outstanding product, easy to install, worked as advertised. The hitch bolted right in and I did not have to drop the exhaust...very straight forward process. I also ordered and installed the wiring harness and 4 pin bracket, no issues; instructions were precise and on target. Great product and great service. 96840

The product arrived UN-damaged with an excellent powder coat paint finish. the bolt on design worked perfectly but I must confess I had access to a car lift and had easy access to the exhaust and under carriage. The prepared electrical harness purchased from Etrailer made for a simple installation. But we must consider that the 2011 Nissan Murano was trailer ready to receive the harness. All went well and was done in 70 minutes. Excellent product and an excellent value, I highly recommend to any one considering a trailer hitch, after market, installation. 705970

For our 2011Nissan Cross Cabriolet. This hitch fit perfectly. We did not have to drop the exhaust. Hubbie used wire brush to clean the rubber and dirt out of holes and the hitch fit perfectly. Already hauled my bike and it worked like a charm. Thank you etrailer. 686962

Purchased a hitch for Nissan Murano 20014. The sales rep was so helpful I ended up purchasing a cargo rack and a cargo bag. All items arrived as promised and intact, unlike another supplier who shipped a wrong hitch. The hitch fit perfectly and the cargo rack appears to be what I needed to haul stuff. Great service. 673486

The hitch just arrived today. I unpacked it and it was very impressive. It was no "Light weight." It was heavy gauge tubing and the welds were strong looking. I'll deliver it and the car to my mechanic Monday for installation and report further what he thought of it. 569564

Perfect fit. Anyone can do their own install with the available videos on etrailer. I took the hitch to my local garage since it was easier on a lift and they also had a torque wrench. cost to install was $95. So for around a couple hundred dollars all in I had a class III hitch. I also purchased the trailer wiring for my vehicle. Watching the videos made it a quick and easy install that I did myself in under 1 hour. 566982

The product lines up with our vehicle, however the bolts were too big for the holes already drilled into our vehicle. 542467

Comments
In most cases when the bolts seem too large to thread, the weld nuts on the vehicle need to be cleaned out. Since the underside of the frame is constantly exposed to dirt and grime the weld nuts can become corroded. I have attached a link on how to get those weld nuts cleaned out.

2010 Nissan Murano

This product was as easy to install as advertised. I did try cleaning out the crud in the bolts as suggested but didn't have much luck (8 years of crud had collected). I had seen in an online video how someone used a tap to clean out the nut threads. I did this and it worked like a charm. Aside from the trip to the hardware store to get the proper size tap (12 - 1.25) it took about 30 minutes to install. As suggested in a video I also used a tie-down strap to help support the exhaust after removing it from the hangers (another tip spray these with WD-40 to aid in the removal). 526459

Comments
Any vehicle that has more than 2 or 3 years driven in a northern climate will have crud and corrosion built up in the hitch attachment nuts welded into the vehicle frame. If the dirt/corrosion isnt too bad, a wire brush like # DW00254
Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner - Wire Brush
$2.94
and some spray lubricant works really well. For older vehicles a thread tap, like you mentioned could be needed. We offer an M12 X 1.25 tap as part # PTW8662
12 mm x 1.25 Tap and Drill Bit
$7.43

The Build Quality of the hitch that we received was very good. The holes lined up without issue and the supplied bolts worked perfectly. I did not have to lower the exhaust to install, there was enough space to get the hitch in place. I also am impress with how snug this fits to the body. The only thing bad I can say is the box it was shipped in did not hold the hitch in place and ripped the box up when is was delivered. Checked and nothing missing or damaged. Maybe secure the hitch to the cross braces in the box. Also noticed a small amount of rust on the surround of the hitch opening. I put so paint on it but not worth sending back for this small amount of rust. Quality control could be better on the paint. The added chrome etrailer sticker is a nice touch. 507997

Ordering was easy. Shipped the same day and delivered to MN in 2 days. Box had a little damage. There was one section of the hitch that was exposed and the end scratched up - paint removed. (photo attached) Installation instruction video was easy to follow for hitch. (haven't installed harness yet) I had to purchase a thread tap to clean out the existing threads, but once cleaned all bolts mounted quite easily. On both ends of the hitch frame there is some interference with the Murano bumper cover shroud. If this is an issue, makes noise, or the like, how can I trim off the interfering parts of the plastic ? Install looks good. 504836

  • Can the Motorcycle Carrier MT70101 be Used to Carry a Yamaha Street Bike on a 2013 Nissan Murano
I have some good news and bad news; the good news is that you are definitely on the right track of making sure that you are under the 400-lb Tongue Weight (TW) capacity of your Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13577. The bad news is that your 2013 Nissan Murano looks like it is the limiting factor instead of your Curt hitch receiver. Your Murano has a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs and typically the TW is 10% of that making your TW capacity 350 lbs instead of 400. You will want to double check...

  • What Causes Tire Cupping on a Trailer Tires
That's tire cupping. When you have cupping wear on a tire it is from the tire bouncing on the road. You will want to check the air pressure in the tire and make sure you are running the maximum air pressure that is indicated on the tire. Then, I would recommend to have the tires and wheels balanced. Another thing to check is the suspension parts on the trailer. When suspension parts begin to wear and get loose it can cause the tire to hop when being towed and cause the cupping pattern.

With this hitch installed you can use a 2-inch hanging or platform bike rack of up to 5-bike capacity, thanks the to hitch's substantial 400-lb tongue weight (TW) rating. TW is downward force on...

  • Recommended Receiver Hitch for 2012 Nissan Murano
As long as the towing capacity of the vehicle is not exceeded and the hitch is installed properly, according to the hitch manufacturers instructions, there should be no adverse warranty implications from installing a hitch. The # 75647 Class III hitch you mentioned is manufactured by Draw-Tite, a very respected hitch manufacturer. I have provided you with a side-by-side photo showing both the Curt # 13577 and the Draw-Tite model installed on a 2012 Murano. As you can see in the photos,...

  • Is There a Wiring Harness That Will Work With My 2014 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet?
You are correct, the Curt Hitch # 13577 is a fit for your 2014 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet and the installation is relatively simple. And, we do have a wiring harness that will work for your vehicle, but it will have to be hard-wired. Don't let that scare you, we have detailed instructions and a video of the installation on a Nissan. A popular wiring kit for the CrossCabriolet is Curt # C56496. I would also recommend purchasing Dielectric Grease, # 11755, for the electrical connectors...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2011 Nissan Murano
Starting with the trailer hitch for your 2011 Nissan Murano, the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # 13577 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit this vehicle and is a great choice. This will provide a 2 inch receiver with a towing capacity of 4,000 pounds. I have attached an installation video on your Murano that you can use for reference. As you mentioned, both the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118653 and the Curt T-Connector # 55571 are confirmed to fit...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Nissan Murano
For your 2015 Nissan Murano you will need the Curt Hitch part # C13205 as it has been confirmed as a fit for your vehicle. The # 13577 does not fit the 2015 models so there is no way to use it on your new Murano. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also...

  • Bike Carrying Options for 2014 Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet
You'll need to use a hitch mounted bike rack, as there aren't any trunk mount bike racks that are compatible with your Murano. For a hitch, I'd recommend the Curt Class III hitch, part # 13577. For a bike rack, Swagman offers the reasonably priced yet well equipped Trailhead which is available in a 2 bike model # S63360, 3 bike model # S63365 or 4 bike model, as part # S63380. The racks include an anti rattle hitch bolt, but I'd recommend adding a locking hitch bolt/cable lock combo...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2014 Nissan Murano
I checked with our hitch manufacturers and there are no front-mounted trailer hitches which are made for a 2014 Nissan Murano (I also looked to try and find a grill guard as an option but there are none that fit this vehicle). So you can add a hitch to your 2014 Murano, but only a rear-mounted trailer hitch receiver, the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75647 or, if you have a CrossCabriolet model, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13577. I've added links to instructions and video installs...

  • Recommended Solutions to Carry Bikes on a 2010 Nissan Murano
Does your Murano have a hitch or any type of roof rack? If it has a roof rack, is it just the rails that run front to back or does it also have the crossbars that run from passenger to driver side?

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2013 Nissan Murano
The Nissan Titan and Armada and Titan do not use the same trailer hitches. The 2013 Murano also requires trailer hitches designed just for it. If you have a regular model you can use # 75647 that you have referenced. If you have the CrossCabriolet model use # 13577. If you plan on doing some towing with either hitch I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring use # 118653.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Towing Accessories for 2014 Nissasn Murano
All the available hitches for your 2014 Murano would share identical weight capacities (which could be limited by the capacities of the vehicle) of 4000 lbs towing/400 lbs tongue weight capacity. I'd choose the Curt Class III, part # 13577 because it's simpler to install and less expensive than the comparable Hidden Hitch or Draw-Tite alternatives. Also, the Curt hitch crosstube is constructed of round tubing, which some folks feel looks better than the rectangular tubing used by the...
