Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Mazda CX-9 - Curt

Today on our 2015 Mazda CX9 we'll be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver with Class 3, part number 13575. This is what our Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver looks like on our Mazda CX9. As you can see, it's a nice square tube, that the arms are tucked underneath to the frame rails. It has a nice black powder-coat finish here that's going to resist rust and corrosion over time. The good thing about this hitch, really easy to install. Your frame has all the built-in weld nuts so all you have to do is hold the hitch up and install the hardware that comes with the kit. This is a 2-inch by 2-inch opening here and it is a Class 3 hitch that's capable of 400 pounds of tongue weight and 4,000 pounds of towing capability. You'll want to go ahead and check your owner's manual to double-check that and you'll want to go with the lowest weight that either your vehicle or the hitch says. You have nice access to the tow rings for your safety chains and your 5/8ths pin hole for your hitch pin.

Now we'll go ahead and give you some measurements to help in choosing some accessories for your new hitch. From the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 5 inches, and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 14 inches. That will help you in choosing accessories, such as ball mounts, bike racks or cargo carriers. Now we'll go ahead and install our hitch. Here on the driver's side of the frame, you'll see the weld nuts here that we'll be using. We'll be using this one that's located towards the front of the vehicle, this one here, and this one.

You can see the two smaller holes here. We'll be using the one that's forward, towards the front of the vehicle. It'll be the exact same on the driver's 00:01:34 side. It's always a good idea to take some spray lubricant, spray it into your weld nuts, and then take a tube brush, run the tube brush in there, clean the threads out. The older the vehicle is, the more dirt and debris and rust will be in those weld nuts, so just hit those with the tube brush and that will clean out your threads. It's always a good idea to grab the hardware, thread it in, just to make sure it goes. Now for these three top attachment points, we'll be using the larger M12 bolt and conical tooth washer, which will go through the hitch and into the weld nuts in those three locations.

Again, you just want to thread those in there to make sure they go nice and easy. For this attachment point, we'll be using a smaller M8 bolt and the smaller conical tooth washer, which will go through the hitch and into the weld nut, into the frame. Now we'll go ahead and get an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch up into position and install the hardware. Now we can install our other hardware. Once we have the hardware installed on the driver's side, we'll repeat the process on the passenger side. Now we'll go ahead and snug down our hardware and then torque it as indicated in the instructions. We use a 3/4-inch socket for those three bolts and then use a half-inch for the smaller one.

Now we'll go ahead and torque our bolts. Now that everything's torqued here on the driver's side, we'll repeat that on the passenger side. Now that everything's tightened and torqued down, we're ready to hit the road. That'll do it for the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, Class 3 with the 2-inch opening, part number 13575. .

Product installs easily. Was a little more difficult to line up the bolt holes than in the instructional video, but a jack and a rubber mallet were able able to help negotiate the bolt holes into alignment. Product should work great. Purchased To carry a dirtbike on a trailer hitch receiver, and the suspension on the CX nine appeared to handle the weight of the 250 pound motorcycle just fine. 601540

First I have-to-say that etrailer.com has the best website around. They have a lot of product, information, and assistance which is easy to search and navigate. Oh, and their prices, can't be beat! However, the biggest positive, for me, are the folks that work at etrailer.com. They were friendly, fast, and very helpful. I bought the Curt 13575 hitch and a Thule Vertex 2 Bike Rack for our 2010 Mazda CX-9 on May 15th and on May 18th I had the order and was installing the hitch and bike rack that evening. The Curt hitch - The etrailer.com video instructions made the installation a breeze. Within 30 minutes I had the hitch installed, all by myself. The Vertex 2 Bike Rack - I can be a bit OCD on things like this, wanting to get the best product at the best price point. Etrailer.com made my decision easy with all the information on their website and their pricing. I've used the setup twice and I'm very pleased with the decision to purchase from etrailer.com and the products. Bottom Line - The products are great and the etrailer.com team is the best! They've earned a faithful customer and I'm telling family and friends about them. 383648

I purchase two different products and installed both, back to back. I did used a jack to lift one side, so it took about 45 minutes to finesse this one into/onto my Mazda CX-9. I needed a helper (wife) which made it much easier. This is for a bike rack. Ordered Friday and delivered Monday, fast, fast. Thank you. 229879

It has performed as my intended use. I have only used this for attaching a bicycle rack and holding 4 bicycles. I have not used for towing at this point.

So my husband and I wanted to get a hitch installed on our 2015 Mazda CX-9. We looked around at different places and even asked the Mazda dealer, they quoted us an astronomical amount. After calling a few other places we were completely discouraged. So I got on youtube and searched how to install a hitch. Etrailer had a video on how to install a hitch for our vehicle. On their video they even gave the part number and gave step by step advice. I was convinced that my husband and I could put the hitch on ourselves. So we ordered a hitch and received it in a timply manner. It took my husband and I a total time of 30 to 40 minutes to put it on. Thank you Etrailer for the video and a great product. You helped our family save a great deal of money! 270404

This was not an overly difficult installation. Get the back of the car up off of the ground (safely), I used ramps for extra clearance. Next, remove the spare altogether, it just makes life significantly easier. Once that is done, it is a matter of wrestling the hitch up in between the frame rails. Clearance is tight, and you will temporarily distort the heat-shields around the mufflers. Once you do get it in place, thread in a single bolt by hand on each side and it will no longer need to be held in place. I do recommend a helper for this portion, but it can done solo. I am 5'5" - 160 and stubborn as can be, so I refused to use a helper. Make sure the conical/toothed washers are tooth-side against the hitch when tightening. Also getting proper torque values on one side is impossible due to an electronic module in place. If you wind up using a wrench, be prepared to exert significant force on final torque. Lastly, the spare will not want to clear when you reinstall. I was able to muscle it up into place, but it was a fight. It fits, but if you ever need to get the spare down on the side of the road, be prepared to either deflate it first (get a portable air compressor) or to fight it. My final thought: Really, this is more of a car issue; the rear view camera will not show the trailer ball when you back up ( my old KIA did). So be prepared for a little extra time there on connection. Overall, an easy if not physical installation. 204052

This is for customer service and shipping only. I will review the installation after I get it done after Christmas. The hitch was shipped in a very strong box with internal bracing to protect the contents. The harness and hardware kits were taped to the hitch and arrived in very good condition. Overall service from first question to actual order and delivery were excellent. I will use this company for these thing in the future. thanks for the great service. 109678

I was excited to receive my brand new hitch yesterday. But once I saw the UPS delivery guy walking up my package to the house, I see two holes in the e-trailer packaging box...I was like what happened to it?!? He claimed that the package arrived at the facility like that. Very Disappointed! Once I opened the shipping box, I found that the top part of the receiver hitch was all scratched up and chipped!! 436867

Not much you can say, fits great, I would not hesitate to purchase again. I read about many folks complaining about how hard it was to get the receiver around the heat shields. I was able to easily do it without raising car, you just have to study it for a second. You stick the backend up first and then rotate it in place by bringing the working end up to position. A bit more direction in the box would have been helpful but not required. Like which side of the odd washers that they use face the bolt head. I remember etrailer mentioning something in the video I watched before buying but I didn't want to waste my time to clean up and go back to the house and find the install video. On my 2013 CX-9 the back of the hitch makes it so the spare tire won't go in place without holding the tire at an angle as you crank it past the hitch...hold the side of the tire closest to the rear of the car higher. The attached pictures also show the bike rack I bought here as well, attached to the new receiver on the back of 2013 CX-9. Seems I can't get in to see previous orders to get the bike rack info or write a review on it. 216724

Was able to install in less than 30 minutes, with a good ratchet and socket set. The initial 'getting hitch into position' was a little of a geometry problem. We had to turn it upside down and come into slot around the spare tire just right, kinda tricky, but doable. Great product, would highly recommend thus company. 86506

Its still solid and performing well. The wiring harness has started malfunctioning though, and will need replacing.

5 stars for the etrailer site. The product descriptions, tutorial videos and customer ratings are the best I have seen. The install video saved me a lot of time. The trailer hitch for my 2007 CX-9 was a little time consuming for a one person installation. REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE to give yourself as much access as possible. After spraying WD40 in the well nuts and cleaning them out, I was able to position the hitch and get a bolt started on each side. To make my life easier, I used the car jack and a 2X4 to hold the hitch in position to get the rest of the bolts started. I used a ratchet to tighten each bolt and finished with the torque wrench. My only issue was that I needed an open end wrench to tighten 2 of the bolts on the driver side next to spare tire cable carrier housing (see photo) to create the clearance to get the torque wrench on those bolts. I'm very happy with the hitch and etrailer, I have already placed another order for more accessories. 263214

This is an excellent product for my 2015 Mazda CX-9. I use it for 2 different bike racks. I got the 2" receiver since this is a bigger car, and in case I ever need it, but right now I use a 2" to 1.25" receiver with a 6" extension. This allows for the 1.25 to fit and also adds some room so I can open the back hatch without it hitting the handlebars of the bikes. Installation: It took me about 30 minutes to bolt the hitch on alone with little difficulty, did not have to drop the exhaust! I recommend backing the car up to a curb so you have some more room to work. 614170

Great product easy to install. No issues after a year. Regular lite weight hauling, nothing heavy duty, very solid for my needs. Did use a calibrated torque wrench from work to ensure torque specs were met. Would do it again, Install companies were wanting $450-$550. 598463

Good product. Great price. Excellent service from etrailer.com This one was a little harder to install. Had to take a small sledge hammer and bang it into place and I could only get 7 of the 8 bolts to line up but this was only for a bike rack so not worried about it. 596594

Rugged and a great fit. Using the hitch for a 400-500 lb cargo carrier. While the hitch is fairly easy to install, it should be noted that an Impact Drill/Driver is required to loosen the frame bolts. 592121

Just installed it. Have yet to use it. Only problem, which is the whole problem, was that the bolt holes were not aligning up with all four on each side. Two ligned up and two didn't on each side. The problem was north and south not east and west. This should not be a problem with the elongated holes in the hitch but they were elongated in the wrong direction. Took a couple hours but eventually pryed it so I got all 8 bolts in. 527779

Product is great, installation was relatively easy. I am satisfied with everything. The only knock would be that the item could have been packaged better for delivery...the item arrived loose in a large cardboard box that was torn up a bit including a 5 inch by 10 inch hole in the box. The hitch though was in new condition, no scratches or anything and the hardware was secured to the hitch with tape so everything was in there. 511503

The hitch I ordered arrived a few days early and an easy install. A few suggestions for others: as others have noted remove the spare tire, it give you some extra room. I installed this on my 2008 Mazda CX9. The hitch itself seems well constructed and strong. Installation was pretty straight forward. Just make sure you thoroughly clean out the threads in the vehicle frame with a wire brush and some WD40 so the bolts go in easily. Mine were pretty corroded and extremely difficult to turn even after cleaning. Other than that I'm happy with the hitch. etrailer had the cheapest prices, no shipping fees or tax, so I'll definitely be using them in the future. 499503

Arrived as quoted, however the packaging is not very good, and the hitch arrived a bit beat up. Installing was difficult as it was just myself, and doing it laying on the ground underneath the car. A few car ramps and extra set of hands would obviously make it go easier. I had access to neither. But to save a few hundred dollars, mostly worth it. Two of the pre-drilled holes didn't exactly line up on the passenger side, a few millimeters really makes a difference. Eventually got all of the bolts started and was able to get all bolts secured. I plan to use this a bike rack. 469993

  • Appearance of Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver When Mounted on 2014 Mazda CX-9
  • We offer three different brands of Class III hitches for your 2014 Mazda CX-9. All can be seen on the link provided. All have 2-inch receiver openings and all are rated equally at 400-lbs maximum tongue weight and 4000-lbs maximum trailer weight, but note that the Curt hitch # 13575 is not suitable for use with trailer weight distribution systems. Unless you plan to use weight distribution I suggest the Curt hitch # 13575 since it is the most cost-effective of the three. All of these...

  • Will Trailer Hitch Installation Interfere with Advanced Keyless Entry on a 2013 Mazda CX-9
  • If I understand the Mazda advanced keyless entry system correctly for the 2013 CX-9, the antenna is built into the rear glass. Installation of a trailer hitch should not have any affect on its use or range. I know that Mazda offers a trailer hitch as an option and makes no mention of the OEM hitch interfering with the antenna. If you plan to use a trailer hitch for towing make sure that the CX-9 you get or have has the towing prep package which includes a heavy duty transmission cooler...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2010 Mazda CX-9
  • Curt trailer hitch # 13575 is indeed listed as a fit for the 2010 Mazda CX-9 models. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or...

  • Which Trailer Hitch Is Recommended For 2008 Mazda CX 9
  • The Draw-Tite and Curt are top quality hitches as far as strength. As far as fitment on the vehicles, most manufacturers today try to make the hitch as least unobtrusive as possible when designing around the vehicle design. When we recommend hitches we usually try to take into consideration how it looks on the vehicle. Like the hitch does not hang too low or that it does not stick too far out from the rear fascia. Also if the installation is easy to do or if it requires modifications. On...

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2015 Mazda CX-9
  • Hitch mounted bike racks are the way to go. They provide a more secure attachment to a vehicle that doesn't contact any painted surfaces. For a hitch I would recommend the Curt Hitch part # 13575 that has a 2 inch opening. 2 inch hitches will have higher capacities and will offer more flexibility for future hitch accessories. This hitch does not require any welding for installation, and you could remove it pretty easily as well. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed...

  • Tip for Getting Last Bolt Started When Installing Hitch and Holes Don't Seem to Line Up
  • Here's what you'll need to do. Loosen all of the 7 bolts you have threaded currently to the point the hitch can move around a bit yet all of the bolts are still started. Now move the hitch around so that the last bolt hole can be started. Once you get all of the bolts started then you can torque them all down.

  • Recommended Hitch With Adapter For 2014 Mazda CX9 With 1.25 Thule T2 Bike Rack
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt and they told me that the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on the Curt Trailer Hitch part # C12112, to the outer edge of the bumper on your 2014 Mazda CX-9 is 3-1/2 inches. I checked the dimensions on the Thule T2 Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9045, and found that the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the bike rack when folded up is 3-1/2 inches. That would put the bike carrier so close to the...

  • Troubleshooting Hitch Bolts that Don't Want to Line Up Properly
  • Sometimes in shipping the install brackets of a hitch can get slightly bent. As long as there are no flex marks on the hitch or chipped paint from the hitch flexing you can bend the hitch back to get it to line up. Otherwise it can be helpful to start with all of the install bolts loose so that you can first get them all started. Once they are all started you can then torque them down to spec.
