Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2005 BMW X3 - Curt

Today on this 2005 BMX X3 were going to install part number 13573 from Curt. All right this is what the hitch looks like when its installed on the vehicle. Next well go ahead and give you some measurements to help when selecting some accessories. From the center of the hitch pin opening to the edge of the bumper is going to be two and a half inches. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground is going to be 15 and three quarter inches. Now well go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed.

First thing we need to do is go ahead and remove the access door from the bottom of the fascia this will not be reinstalled. Then well go ahead and remove the bumper cover nuts and there will be quite a few varieties of fasteners we have to remove. Well start off by removing the three nuts and screws in each tire well. Well go ahead and pull the wheel liners out of the way over the lip of the bumper fascia. Then while were pulling the wheel out of the way well remove the screw holding the bumper fascia on the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle.

Well go ahead and remove one screw on the bottom of the fascia near the muffler. Then well remove the plastic nut in the corner near the muffler. Then there will be a plastic nut we have to remove in the same place, but on the passenger side. In each corner theres a piece of plastic that we can remove. Pop those loose and remove the two screws that are hidden below.

Next we go ahead and remove the bumper cover. Well pull the sides out and away by the fender well and then well pull back on the bumper. Its a good idea to have an extra set of hands while you do this. With the bumper cover removed we can go ahead and start trimming on our 2005 model will trim the inner fascia as the same profile as the access door. Next well go ahead and remove and discard the steel bumper by removing two nuts on each side.

Our hitch will replace that. Raise the hitch in position in place of the steel bumper and then well secure it with the new hardware, the 12 millimeter flange nuts. Once we have all the hardware loosely installed we can go ahead and tighten down the bolts and torque them as specified by the instructions. Then we can go ahead and reinstall the fascia. Okay with the fascia reinstalled thatll finish it for our installation of part number 13573 from Curt on our 2005 BMX X3.

Ordered the 13573 Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" for my 2005 BMW X3 om May 18, got it May 22. Excellent. I'm pretty handy but felt a little daunted when the instructions gave an indication of fitting times 10/10 :( Expert a couple of hours or so, novice, quite a bit longer ha ha ha ha. Well, to cut a long story short, it took me an hour and a half on my own. Instructions were pretty good, I also back these up with images from the install video using my snipping tool on my PC. All in all, very happy. 512799

Think it was two days and the trailer hitch was at my front door “) Only thing i had to do was give the bumper cover a quick jerk and it come right off. 4 nuts off, 4 nuts on and back together it went with no problems. Needless to say i was shocked about the ease of doing it myself and saving literally hundreds of dollars and i liked that part also! Took about an hour at a snails pace! Thank you much “ Mike Smith Charleston, Wv 557110

I purchased this hitch for my Grilfriend's car so she could use a bike rack. the hitch looked good and the price was Great. ordering was EZ, and I got an Email that it was shipping the next morning, it did and I get it delivered by the end of the week. the Hitch was Very Beefy and looked Great! We watched the videos on the install and went to town, EZ install ! Girlfriend did one side and I did the other. I did the cutting with the Dremel and it turned out really nice. I would do this again!!! took under 2 hours with the extra cutting. 357597

Overall a good experience. Service from eTrailer great and the hitch itself is sound. The two install videos are also very helpful, but they are for the 2005 and 2009 models of the BMW X3. I own a 2006 and found that the interior/exterior of the bumper fascia was a bit different than either of the videos showed. No need to cut out the 'bumper beam' area; and the 'Figure 2' diagram in the instructions of where to trim the inner and outer fascia leaves you guessing a bit. Incrementally doing minimal trimming followed by slipping the bumper cover back on the car was the best way of seeing where more trimming was needed. In the end the hardest part of the five or so hour venture was wrestling the bumper cover back on the X3. It turns out that a lower corner of the new hitch/bumper on the passenger side is pushing against the inside of the bumper cover. Bummer. But by the time I noticed the contact the car was all back together again. Barely noticeable small bulge in the exterior now where that contact occurs. In the end I am happily carrying bikes on a hitch-mounted 4-bike carrier. Nice! 423041

2007 BMW X3 with M sports package. Very good quality hitch, be careful how much you cut as per instructions do not cut to the top of lower bumper, but just a half inch above lower bumper crease, one can always cut more, but one cannot replace what is cut. In addition I had a bow on the left side from the end of the hitch, I had to remove bumper again and cut a small notch inside the lower bumper, this notch is not visible from the outside, very acceptable, go slow take your time one can always cut more. The wiring kit was awesome! The e trailer video was right on! I had it completed in just under one hour! Over all very satisfied with e trailer, great prices, great customer service, fast deliver. I suggest you search the internet for additional info before you start. E trailer has some really good videos. However additional info is always helpful. Thumbs up for etrailer! Product was perfect and shipping was VERY fast. I ordered one day and got it within a couple of days. Whole process couldn't be easier. As far as installation, the trailer hitch itself couldn't be any easier. Getting the bumper off proved a little harder than I thought, but I was able to do it and get it all back together. And I'm very much of a novice at such things. whole process couldn't have been better or easier. Now I'm going to order the electronics and trailer ball from etrailer! 641156

All good! I bought this for my 2008 BMW X3. It was fairly easy for a novice to install (need to have a torque wrench). I use it for a cargo tray to carry my camping gear. Very happy with this purchase and the customer service. 446831

The quality of the hitch is excellent but the directions provided by Curt are lacking. The video on the etrailer website is good and it provides the best directions available, including the ones found on youtube. However, for BMW x3 installation, the final cutting of the bumper facia is critical for the job to look professional. That portion of the video lacks precise measurements and the cut measurements provided in the Curt directions vary from the cut made on the video. 442186

For the bumper cut-out, I found I had to cut a square hole, 7" wide. This was necessary to be able to get access to the hitch pin hole, which ends up inside the bumper. See the attached for the template I used to make the cut-out. I also cut 2 small notches on the inside of the bumper (see red circles in photos), to provide clearance for the end plates on the hitch. Other than the above, installation went as advertised. 410673

I haven’t had the need to use the hitch much lately. I moved over a year ago and used the hutch to tow a trailer. Everything worked great. The best part is that I installed it myself. I used your videos to help me. They are amazing and made things go smoothly. Thanks for the follow up. I really value etrailer. Great products at great prices with great support.

Great price on the hitch. Easy order process and fast shipping to the west coast. One comment that might help other X3 owners, there are different trim packages than what was shown in the video. My X3 has the M trim package and also the parking sensors. Had to also remove the 4 wire connectors to the sensors to remove the bumper. There is no small hatch door on my bumper, but was very easy to cut the notch into the bumper itself to give room for the hitch. One important note, on this bumper, there was an additional portion of the mold that needed to be removed. The corner of the hitch hits a small bump on the inside of the bumper that needed to be removed to make the bumper fit properly. Once i figured that out, it was an easy reinstall. 373137

This product has been great, exactly as described! Thanks etrailer.com for helping us get a four bike rack hooked up to my wife's X3, we have taken many family bike trips with our thule rack hooked up to this hitch and it has been awesome! Fitment was not tough at all, even on our 2004 model that required a bumper removal and slight trimming of the plastic. Your videos were great and made this a breeze for anyone who is moderately adept with their hands and a few tools. thanks again! 369822

Spot on Perfect for 2008 BMW X3. Etrailer rates it as a 10 on the how hard this is to put on your vehicle yourself. Id say more like a 4-5, if you have any wrenching experience at all. It just takes a bit of time. The video on site tells you the exact steps and it was perfect. You will need a dremel tool to cut the trim. Super Price. You cannot find a better priced hitch or better quality for the money. That being said, I believe they could charge more this item, the quality is that good. I very highly recommend Etrailer to anyone looking for a hitch. 352424

I self-installed the hitch on my 2010 X3. After installing, I notification cede the bumper was deformed, so I had to pull the bumper off and trim off the lower square corners of the side plates at a 45 degree angle so the bumper fit back on correctly. Other than that, it has been a great hitch. 333193

Got the Curt trailer hitch for my '07 BMW X3 yesterday and installed it today. Took me a while, as I'm not very mechanically inclined (so i made sure to take my time), but got it done and am very pleased with the results. The Curt hitch seems to be of very high quality, and looks really good installed. I also got the wiring kit, but haven't tackled that job yet (I've watched the etrailer installation video, but still can't figure out what they're doing). 311235

I put this on my 2007 X3 M sport package. BMW did not offer a hitch for M sport package X3 and this hitch did require some material be cut away from the inner bumper in order to fit. The clearance cuts were easily done by a Dremel tool. The hitch bolts up in place of the bumper reinforcement. Removal of the bumper cover was a little intimidating but turned out to be simple and easy. The instructions were helpful but I did not have to cut out as much material as the instructions said to cut. I also had to cut out a section of the bumper cover to provide clearance around the hitch (shown in the pictures). I think it turned out very good and most people would never guess it is not OEM factory hitch. I use it to haul a 10' trailer (mulch trailer) and also a hitch mount motorcycle carrier that works great. 269934

The hitch was great, it showed up on time. My only issue is your estimated installation time. It stated 3 hours for a "professional" and 4 1/2 to 6 for amateur. I'm no pro, but I had a friend help and we installed it in less than 2 hours and that included the wiring harness. 254752

Bought my 2005 X3 trailer hitch here because price was right (not the lowest, but good!) and it was clear in their recommendations they KNEW what was needed for a complete package. Then their install videos locked the deal! Brilliant, informative and made the my install go smooth and easy, even the wiring. I was torn between a BMW direct wiring package & controller, but theirs turned out to be even easier to install on my X3. Extremely satisfied! 248476

Ordered the hitch to haul bikes on my 2007 X3. Upgraded to 3 day shipping and was very happy with the fast shipping and quality of the hitch. Installed on my own in about 2 hours. Hardest part of installation was putting the fascia material back together. Video was very helpful. I used a bosch oscillating saw to make my cuts and it worked perfectly. I agree with other reviewers that there was no need to cut the square part of the bumper. Plenty of clearance. Very happy with etrailer and ease of installation. Thank You! 201604

This is a solid, inexpensive trailer hitch that I was able to install myself using the great videos etrailer.com has on their site. They even had separate videos for all 3 model years of my particular vehicle. Installation was difficult, mainly because I had to remove so much trim just to access and remove the bumper, but etrailer.com warned me it would be. The actual installation of the hitch itself was a breeze. All in I saved over $300 by buying from etrailer.com and installing myself. Also had fun sending my wife the pic of the dismantled bumper with the line "What do I do with all this now?!!" and freaking her out! 199821

Product is great. At a great price. They even have a video showing you step by step how to install it. Mine was a 10 out 10 in difficulty. Yes it was a bear to put on but if you have a buddy it'll go pretty smooth and save you $500 big ones. Uhaul wanted $647. Took us about 2 hours start to finish. Just take it slow. If you need this hitch for pulling boats etc. you might wanna spend the money to have it professionally installed. My hitch is for a Thule bike rack so I'm comfortable with installing myself. Plus I get the bragging rights. :) And BTW. I'm a female at 5'3 140lbs if that helps. 192052

Given that the Curt hitch cost a little less it would be a good option. I have included a link to the installation instructions to the right. If you plan on doing any towing I recommend...

  • 2004 BMW X3 Curt Trailer Hitch Recommendation
  • The only solution I can provide for you is the hitch for your 2004 BMW X3. The Curt hitch part # 13573 is listed as a fit. But since the # AMC400 weighs 37 lbs you would not have the tongue weight capacity for the weight of it plus your 280 lb dirt bike. You would be about 17 lbs too heavy. Plus this carrier is designed for hitches with tongue weights that are at least 500 lbs in capacity. Our expert opinion is going to be to find a small trailer to tow with your X3 that you can load...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2006 BMW X3
  • Curt trailer hitch # 13573 does fit your 2006 BMW X3. This and all of the trailer hitches for the 2006 model do require some fascia trimming to install the hitch. I have included a picture that shows where the trimming is required and a video showing installation for you. To complete your towing set up I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK4. It includes a ball mount, interchangeable ball set, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. And for trailer wiring you can use # C59236.

  • Parts Needed to Tow Trailer with 2008 BMW X3
  • First you will need to start with a trailer hitch confirmed to fit your 2008 BMW X3. For that you would want the Curt # 13573 which is a confirmed fit and would work well. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball...

  • Curt Class III Hitch Part # 13573 on 2010 BMW X3 Interference with Spare Tire
  • The Curt Class III Hitch, part # 13573 will not interfere with the spare tire of your X3. The hitch actually replaces the steel bumper behind the rear fascia, the spare tire is located behind this area and would not affect the hitch installation. For your convenience, I will include a copy of the installation instructions. You can see the instructions by using the link provided below.

  • Installation of Curt Class III Receiver on a 2007 BMW X3
  • You can view the install instructions by clicking on the link provided below or on the product description page. The install is pretty involved, requiring the removal of the rear bumper fascia and bumper. The hitch actually replaces the bumper beam located behind the fascia. The fascia would then need to be trimmed as shown in the instructions before being replaced on the vehicle. When trimming the fascia, remember the old woodworkers credo: Measure twice, Cut once!

  • Does Bumper on 2006 BMW X3 have to be Trimmed to Install a Trailer Hitch
  • All of the trailer hitches for your 2006 BMW X3 including # 13573 require some trimming of the rear fascia. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation of this hitch for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK4. It comes with a ball mount with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop, interchangeable ball set, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for a 2006 BMW X3 that Can Not Use a Trunk Mount Bike Rack
  • I do have a solution for you but first I did some checking and Yakima trunk mounted racks are not recommended for your 2006 BMW X3 because the vehicle is unable to support the weight at the point where the carrier must be placed. The other manufacturers also exclude the 2006 X3. I recommend installing a trailer hitch and using a hitch mounted bike rack. For a trailer hitch I recommend # 13573. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. I have linked a video showing an example...

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for 2004 BMW X3
  • Your best bet for carrying bikes on your 2004 BMW X3 would be to install a hitch like the Curt # 13573 and use a hitch mounted bike rack. Swagman offers the reasonably priced Trailhead model, that's available in a 2 bike model as part # S63360, a 3 bike as part # S63365 and a 4 bike as part # S63380. None of our vendors who produce trunk mounted bike racks have anything that would be compatible with your X3. Because the top straps of the rack would need to clip to the top of the rear...

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2008 BMW X3
  • The Curt Hitch # 13573 that you referenced would be a great choice for your 2008 BMW X3 for a hitch and would work well with the Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Carrier # S63360. Check out the installation instructions and video I attached for these products. If you plan on carrying any womens or alternative framed bikes without a horizontal top tube you might also be interested in purchasing a Thule Bike Adapter Bar # TH982XT to provide a horizontal top tube for the rack to attach to. • Options for Carrying a Cargo Bag with a 2009 BMW X3
  • You definitely don't want to be putting extra weight on your sunroof or your rear spoiler. The best way to avoid that is to either use a roof rack or hitch mounted carrier. For a roof rack we have the Thule Winbar Evo Bars # TH711400 for Silver or # TH711420 for Black with the Foot Pack # TH710401. A more cost-effective option is the Malone Roof Rack # MPG201 but it doesn't have an aerodynamic design so it will be a little more noisy and won't look as sleek. You can then use a cargo...

  • Which Hitch fits a 2010 BMW X3 SUV
  • Hitch # 11771 is for 2006 BMW 325xi Wagons and 2007-2010 328 Wagons, not the BMW X3. The proper hitch for a 2010 BMW X3 is Curt part # 13573. BMW X3s are not in the 3 series family like the coupes, sedans and wagons are. When shopping for parts in the future, remember to look specifically for the X3, not 3 series. I have added a link to the hitch and the install instructions below.
