Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2007 Ford Freestyle - Curt

Today on our 2007 Ford Freestyle we'll be taking a look at and installing the Curt 2 inch Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 13542. The Curt Class III 2 inch Trailer Hitch is a fully welded trailer hitch that simply bolts onto your vehicle's frame with no drilling or welding required. It's a 2 inch by 2 inch receiver hitch with a reinforced collar. We have a safety chain loop that will work with a wide variety with safety chain hooks. The hole here is 5/8 inch in diameter, it will work with your common hitch fit and clips, or also your favorite hitch pin and lock. You'll notice how it's kind of recessed up under the bumper.

That way you don't hit your shins or your legs on it as you're walking by. This Curt Trailer Hitch offers a 3,500 pound total trailer weight and a 350 pound tongue weight. That's the weight pushed down on the bottom of the hitch. When you add a weight distribution assembly that total trailer weight is bumped up to 4,000 pounds and the tongue weight is bumped up to 400 pounds. Make sure to always check your vehicle's owners' manual to see if your vehicle can handle that much. Now we'll give you some measurements that may help you when selecting a ball knob, bike rack, or cargo carrier.

From the side of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4 1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 15 1/4 inches. Now that we've gone over some features I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. The first thing we need to do is lower down the exhaust and the vacuum canister. For our vacuum canister we have 3 bolts. There are 2 on the bottom side, and we've got 1 on the top here.

I'm gonna go ahead and take some spray lubricant, it's gonna make it a little bit easier to get off. Then we're using a 10 millimeter socket for these 3 bolts. Now let's go ahead and shake it lose, so we just need to push it this way until it drops down like so. Now for dropping down our exhaust we actually need to run a safety strap, that way it can rest on that while we're putting the hitch up. We'll hook one side, it just needs to be a secure spot, so we'll hook the other side, pull it nice and tight; as you can see our exhaust is gonna come down and rest on it. Now for our exhaust hangers, one's located right here, and the other one is located right here.

We're gonna go ahead and take some spray lubricant, it's gonna make it a little bit easier to get off. Then we'll just take a pry bar and push it off. Perfect. Now let's go ahead and take off this exhaust bracket here, and we will not be reusing that, and once again we're just gonna be using a 10 millimeter socket. We're gonna be working with the driver's side first. We're gonna be using the 1/2 inch carriage bolts. Let's first take our 1/2 inch fish wire, we're gonna feed it up through the hole here, and then we're gonna come out through the larger hole right here. Now we don't want to pull it all the way through, we kind of leave it hanging like so. Then we're gonna take our block, put that on first. We'll push it through the frame first, so up through the larger hole, just like that, and then we'll take our 1/2 inch carriage bolt and thread that onto the fish wire. Then we're gonna go up through the larger hole again, and then we're gonna pull down the fish wire. Now if it doesn't seem to be moving, you can always take your finger and just kind of help it along until you get it to the smaller hole, and then we're just gonna pull it right down through, like so. Then we can remove the fish wire; be careful when you do so because we will be reusing it. It kind of helps if you hold on to the bolt, you can thread it off. Now for this hole, we're gonna be doing everything on the outside and then putting it through the hole and then pulling it back out. We'll take the fish wire, go up through the block and take our 1/2 carriage bolt and thread that on. All right. Then we'll push the bolts up through first, and then the block, pull down through, and there we go. We'll take off our fish wire; we got it. Now for the passenger's side we're gonna be working with this hole here and then the larger hole here. We're gonna repeat the same process, only this time we're using the 3/8 carriage bolts and the 3/8 fish wire. Now it can help if you pre-bend the fish wire, that way it guides it right back to where it should go. It may take a little bit just to get it through, but just be patient and remember not to pull it all the way up. We'll take that block, feed it up through, and then the 3/8 carriage bolt and get that started. We're gonna push the block up through first and then the carriage bolt and then guide it back down through the other hole, just like that. Then we can go ahead and remove that fish wire. Now for our last hole, same thing as the driver's side, and then back down. Now we'll take the rest of our hardware. Remember to install the 3 1/2 inch bolts onto the 1/2 inch carriage bolts and the 3/8 nut onto the 3/8 carriage bolt. Now let's go ahead and grab an extra set of hands and set our hitch up into position. Now for this side here we need to go up and over our exhaust first, and then we'll raise it up. Be careful not to push your carriage bolts back up into the frame. Once we've got it where it needs to be we just go ahead and take one of our nuts and thread it up through. Once we got that set we can actually drop it down, and it's gonna hold it in place for us. Then we can go ahead and put the rest of the hardware on. Now with all the bolts snug down, let's go ahead and torque them down to manufacturer's specifications which are listed in the instructions. Now let's go ahead and put our exhaust back in place. You can see our hitch here has a built in exhaust hanger. Press it up and then slide it over. Then we'll do the second one here, and now we can remove our safety strap. Now we can re-position our vacuum canister. Once we get the 2 bottom holes lined up we'll need to make sure to get the 1 lined up up top here. We'll take our bolts and get those started. Now we can just tighten them all down. That's gonna complete our look at the Curt 2 inch Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 13542 on our 2007 Ford Freestyle.

Very easy installation, works great. Bought it with the wiring for my Ford Freestyle. Easy installation, works great. Installation took all of 45 minutes... looks professional and no drilling. Everything bolts up easily. Hardest part was holding it in place to start bolts, but once I found I could let the muffler hold one side up while I start the other side... it went fast (would have only been 20 minutes). Since installed... pulled multiple smaller trailers and (3) u-Haul car dollies. everything worked well without fail. 1 yr in, not a single problem to report. Thank You. 673282

My new e trailer Hitch receiver Looks great and fits perfect. It was the lowest price I found anywhere for that trailer hitch. Took 35 minutes to install it "by myself". Great e trailer instruction video on you tube makes it even more simpler to install it. It gets 2 thumbs up from me. 100% satisfied. 557745

Installation was easier than I thought it would be. I was worried about fishing the bolts through the frame, figuring I'd get it stuck somehow, but they all came right through, no problem. Fits perfectly and secure. My bike rack bolts right into it easily. Very satisfied. 543974

Thank you George for following up on that , much appreciated. Wow! It's been a year already? I will tell you that I have been very pleased with the hitch assembly, nicely packaged, easy instructions. I had struggled & debated for months to pay for an install at a local garage/trailer rental. The cost factor for that out the door would have been at least $375.00. I am a hands on fix all guy so I did it my self. So I took my car which I adore , a 07 Ford 500 stout passenger car & now pulling at capacity a trailer we call Scamper. A 3 door Half camper /hauler trailer. I am impressed at the custom fit which is paramount for a secure safe tight fit. 528227

Very happy with product. I installed it myself in about 90 minutes but had to use a jack to lift the hitch up to the bottom of the car since I had no helper. Video showing all the steps is spot on and fish wire worked well. Customer service was very good - they get it! 478752

Great product. Great videos. The installation of the trailer hitch took around 1 hour. Backed the car up on car ramps which helped with the install. Sturdy and easily controlled pulling. Used our 2007 Ford Freestyle to pull a 5' X 8' [RENTAL] trailer loaded with a piano 200 miles with no problems! Also appreciate the removable hitch. No sore shins here :) 448811

I loved how easy it was to find what I was looking for. But they need to send an e.mail conformation on when your product is being shiped. I had no way of knowing when it was coming, and so I had to wait when Fed-Ex or UPS would come daily untill it arrived. The prices were great and exactly in my budget. 446669

First experience with etrailer and I have to say that they exceeded my expectations. The order process was smooth and easy. The hitch and wiring assembly showed up in a well packaged container. The instructions included with the product and available online made installation a snap. The fit and finish of the Curt hitch is excellent. Once installed the only thing visible is the 2" receiver with the main structure of the hitch packaged nicely out of view, flush to the underside of the vehicle. The plug and play 4-pole wiring kit was simple to install. Planning to use the hitch for hauling the mountain bikes to the trail-head and pulling a pop-up for weekend camping getaways! 381343

great job e trailer .the hitch was worth every penny.what i loved most was the video how to install. to see if i want to install it my self or take to shop.the hardest part of this job was jacking up and blocking the 2005 ford five hundred. it took about 2 hours . i had it already to install and i called my friend to help lift it in place he was there only 10 min. if it was a speed contest a could had it in a hour. it was a curt hitch 13542 .please have some help you it in place. your finger will thank you . e trailer gets a 10 from me . i am 65 yrs. old and it was a lot of fun installing it . 325041

Great product. Great service. Hitch was incredibly easy to install. WATCH INSTALLATION VIDEO to save a headache. I did first rear bolt wrong because I thought I had it down after front bolt. Just watch video and you're good. Printed instructions are simplistic and useful but video makes an amateur into an expert. I did install on the floor (no lift) and still had a good amount of room to work. 1.5 hours for me to finish. 40 minute install time is pretty much spot on for someone who listens and watches vid. Etrailer service was fantastic as well. Had to have hitch and wiring shipped 2000 miles from my home, so I could meet package and service was flawless. Customer service called to confirm my shipping instructions and shipped order that day. Thank you also for UPS shipping. 308779

This installed very easily on my Ford Freestyle. Only a couple notes. The kit only comes with two fish wires, one for each size bolt. This is crazy and would be nearly impossible to install. Luckily I had three more from another install to use. You need one for each bolt. Also, the instructions should tell you to install the muffler hanger onto the hitch prior to installing it. That would have been tons easier. Other than that it was tooless and pretty easy. 283742

It wasn't as easy to install as I hoped. Mostly because of rusty screws in plastic on my car. But its on, its tight and it works just as I had needed. I have found the need to put shims in the sleeve to tighten it up and stop the racket. And the wiring bracket I got from you or somewhere else was a cinch to install, good video instructions - works great. 250784

All items for installation were included. Couple of little points to make: 1. The instructions said 1/2" and 3/8" bolts. It was actually 3/4" and 3/8" 2. HIGHLY recommend using tape to hold the bolts you have fished into place. You will push the bolts into the frame if you you're not careful. 3. Requires a torque wrench capable of > 100ft pounds. 4. 2 people make this a breeze to install Will buy from these guys again on my next vehicle. Quality goods. 234723

The hitch was received two days after the order, in good condition. The added corrugated panels in the middle of the shipping box kept the hitch in place while in transit, and nothing was damaged. Hitch design is better than others, with gussets on the exhaust side to ensure needed strength. Installation was quick, the hitch fits perfectly, and it's tucked away under the bumper. Very happy with design, fit and finish of this Curt hitch. 112771

The hitch has worked great on our 2009 Taurus SEL, but I had to have an exhaust shop lower the muffler half an inch. In reverse, with trailer in tow or not, there was a vibrating noise under the car. The exhaust system was making contact with the receiver hitch, and vibrating. It was an easy fix, and there was no charge to heat and bend the hanger tang. Very happy with the product!

Thanks for the follow up and reply. This is a great solution for your exhaust, it is not uncommon for a slight modification to be needed when installing a trailer hitch.

I purchased the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, it installed as easy as stated on the web site and doesn't take away looks of my wife's car...very important. More importantly the hitch mounted solidly to the vehicle and is itself a solid piece of metal able to handle anything I could pull with the car. 100942

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 2005 Ford Freestyle
  • The correct wiring harness you would need for your 2005 Ford Freestyle would be the Tow Ready Harness part # 118395. This will give you a flat 4-way that should match up to your trailer's 5-way. Typically the 5th wire on a 5-way is run to the reverse lights of the tow vehicle for a reverse lockout or reverse lights. Either way if you need that fifth circuit you would also need to install the part # 20036. This will plug into the 4-way of your vehicle and the fifth wire will tap into...

  • Towing Capacity of Class III Trailer Hitch When Installed on 2007 Ford Freestyle
  • Having a hitch with a higher capacity than the vehicle itself is a common occurrence. From my online research, I found that the Ford Freestyle does indeed have a 2000 lb towing capacity. As you correctly stated, the Class III hitches available for the vehicle have a 3500 lb towing capacity. Because the overall capacity of the towing system will be limited to the capacity of its lowest rated component, you'd be limited to the 2000 lb capacity of the vehicle.
