Excellent hitch systems for hard to find hook up for older Ford Explorer. I am very satisfied with this hitch system. Be aware the wiring harness will have to be secured up out of the swing path of the ball which can be done by installin a screen door spring to keep the harness out of the way 357871

The hitch went on without ANY problems on our '98 Ford Explorer! Didn't even have to remove our full size spare to install. I am very happy and relieved that we didn't run into any problems like ppl from other sites reported about their supposed 'vehicle-specific' hitch fitting their vehicle. It fit perfectly and appears to be a great solid piece of workmanship. Time will tell, but I believe it will outlast us for our needs. EXCELLENT customer service and support as well. Always best to choose a company with great customer service over any slight price difference. Although that wasn't the case at etrailer - best prices available! 210199

STILL a great hitch! No wear than we have seen and a reliable addition to our towing ability! Again, the customer service really and literally sold it for us!

Ford Transit Connect

The hitch arrived in great time so I could work on it this weekend. Despite the box getting severely damaged during transit, the hitch was basically fine, aside from some scratched paint. Thankfully the good quality hardware was securely taped to the hitch. The installation would have been much faster if I didn't have to fight a bent bumper and the factory 4-wire plug mounted to the bumper. In the end, I was victorious and am very pleased with the new form fitting hitch on my wife's truck. Thank you etrailer! 9163

2003 Ford Explorer

Shipped to the house (free) arrived within 4 days. Slipped onto my 2003 Ford Explorer Sport XLT like a glove. No interference with the 16inch spare tire tucked under the back bumper which already had a 2" ball attached to it with an existing trailer plug and associated wires . Took less than 45 min to install including setting up the 4 tools I use thru clean up. Installed in my home garage. Hitch appears to be well made. Good looking welds. Hole alignment was spot on. Did the install using one hand to hold the hitch while the other hand installed the hardware. Beautiful engineering. I honestly cannot remember the last time a little automobile job like this went so smooth. 637380

This hitch receiver took about an hour to install and was easy to do by myself. One thing of note, two of the bolts are torqued to 150 ft lbs and the other four are torqued to 110 ft lbs. So make sure you have the ability to do that before you start. I did lower the spare tire to make room for my torque wrench to swing. Finally, I also recommend spraying some cable lube inside the spare tire cable assembly while the tire is down, to keep it freed up. 598876

Looks good, technically easy to install, but really need a second person to assist. The two side frame bolts should be longer. I had to remove the lock washer to thread the nut on. I’ll have to go to local hardware store to buy longer grade 8 bolts to replace for secure installation. 491396

Didn't fit exactly when I first tried to install this, but then realized it got tweaked in shipping just a little (not noticeable, about 1/4 inch). Had to put it into a vice and make an adjustment, then it slide right into place and all the bolt holes lined up perfectly. If you want to keep the full size spare tire, this is the hitch to get. 347694

Got the hitch installed. Took about an hour. The square carridge bolt holders needed some grinding on one side to fit the 1979 Ford Explorer 4door Limited frame rails. Nothing serious, but took some time to figure out why the bolt wanted to remain at an angle, not seated properly through the frame hole. The receiver part sticks out rearward more than a "Hidden Hitch". Gotta watch the shins. 161635

1999 Ford Explorer

Easy install, follow instructions.Solo install , by leaving packing cardboard on hitch to protect from scratching, lifted free end with 3 ton floor jack ( over kill) to hold in place while I started on other end . around 25 minute install time. Looks good. 107997

- 13540
by:

It's a nice product, but the hitch was too small, had to pull the ends out by about .5-.75 inch on each side. Having to do this was no easy task at all, the tools we needed (lucky I was at the dealer to do this) are things most people do not own at their homes, so the DIY at 25 minutes is unrealistic, even the pro install at 10 minutes is an HUGE understatement. If you have an ball hitch on the footstep it will have to be removed, because the nut underneath will be in the way of the hitch install. 103728

The fit was perfect and easy to install. I used a strap to hold one end while I bolted the other end in. Just watch your plug for the lights to make sure you don't pinch and or cut them because it comes very close to it, well mine did anyway. My 16" spare fits great! 85829

1999 Ford Explorer

The hitch and wiring harness seem to be of good quality but the end of the hitch was bent by about two inches when I received it, probably as a result of being dropped during shipping. I was able to bend the hitch back into shape but the paint was chipped off where it was bent. Had it not been bent, it would have been perfect. I was able to install the hitch and it looks like it will work great. The plug in harness was easy to install and works perfectly. I recommend having the hitches packed in some sort of shock absorbing material like styrofoam. 80786

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch that Keeps Spare Tire for a 1997 Ford Explorer
  • For your 1997 Ford Explorer there are a few options for trailer hitches that will retain the spare tire under the vehicle. These include Curt hitches # C13106 and # 13540 and Draw-Tite hitch # 75096. Of these hitches Curt hitch # 13540 has the easiest installation. I have linked the instructions for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or...
