Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2004 Jeep Wrangler - Curt

Today on our 2004 Jeep Wrangler we'll be installing the Curt 2 inch receiver tube hitch, part number 13430. Here's what our hitch'll look like once it's installed. Next I'll give you a couple measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for you new hitch. Such as a wall mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the rear mounted spare tire is 6 and a quarter inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 17 and a half inches. We'll now go ahead with the installation.

Now to begin our install, we'll first go ahead and note that the vehicle's tow hooks and rear bolt, that goes into the weld mount of the frame, have already been removed because an after market bumper has been installed. Depending on the depth of the after market bumper it may interfere with the hitch. Next, we'll go ahead and point out the attachment points for our new hitch. We going to have a total of four attachment points; two on each side. These attachment points is a well nut built into the bottom of the frame rail and a pre-drilled hole in the side of the frame. Now for this application, we're going to be using the 12 millimeter bolt because it'll thread into this particular weld nut. Now before you attempt to install the new hardware into the weld nut if there was not a bolt in it, the threads of the weld nut will be built up with rust, dust, dirt and debris and can make it difficult to install the new fastener.

For those cases, I recommend you clean it out thoroughly. We use a stray lubricant and a half inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. Thoroughly clean the threads before we install the new fastener. Once you have it cleaned out, you can then go ahead and check to see if you're going to use that 12 millimeter or 7/16th bolt. If you can not compare it to the old hardware.

As you can see, our new bolt goes in. So we are now ready to install the hitch. To secure it here at the weld nut, we're going to be using the 12 millimeter bot and half inch inaudible 00:02:04 washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch. For the side frame attachment point, we're going to be using a half inch bolt and split lock washer to go through the hitch into the frame. Where we'll then have a handle nut that goes into the frame, thread in two. Now we've identified attachment points and hardware, we're ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place.

It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. We're going to go ahead and thread the fasteners into the bottom of the frame first. We'll feed the passenger's side up, over the exhaust, bringing both sides into position, lining up with the weld nut. And just install our fastener finger tight this time. Now with our first fastener holding the hitch in place, we can take our half bolt and split lock washer, feed it into the frame, using the access hole in the bottom of the frame we'll slide the handle nut up to our bolt that we thread it into. Now keep in mind that since our fasteners are the same on each side, each process we do here on the driver's side we will repeat identically on the passenger's side. Noting that the handle nut can be bend as necessary to fit up into the access hole. Now once we have all the hardware installed finger tight, we'll go ahead and run it down to secure it. Now once we have our fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now the remaining portion of our handle nut will typically be cut off, which you can do with a pair of tin snips. Worst case scenario, take it and bend it up and around the frame, out of the way. With that it'll complete the install of the Curt 2 inch receiver tube hitch, part number part, number 13430, on our 2004 Jeep Wrangler. .

Installation was fast and easy. I used a car jack to keep it in place and installed it by myself. The toughest part was removing the existing bolts in the frame. The angle of the bolts on the passenger side are hard to work with if you want to use power tools, so get a ratchet-wrench if you don’t have one. It looks great on my Jeep, can’t wait to use it! 644733

The trailer hitch works fine. Now. Bottom line the hitch didn't fit. Only two bolt holes would align with the Jeep frame. Front or back, your choice but only two. I attached the front holes, then uninstalled it and drilled the rear holes of the hitch to enlarge them to allow the bolts to align. First and last time I will buy a Curt. I have never had an issue with Draw tite. 733588

Good product at a good price. Removing the 9 year old bolts from the Jeep was by far the hardest part. Curt gives you two sets of bolts to use and you pck the right one depending on the application. But, the two are only very slightly different. They have the same thread/inch and are only very slightly different diameter. Pick the wrong one (I did initially) and you are in for frustrating time. Otherwise, it will work perfectly for me. 192686

I bought the hitch for my 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It all works great. The Curt website with video installation instructions is really helpful. Now I can do more with my Jeep! I bought a platform for the hitch so that I now can carry my Kawasaki 250 down for repairs or have fun taking it camping. 96799

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • What is the Difference Between the Curt Hitches # 13430 and # 13408 for a 2006 Jeep TJ Wrangler
The biggest difference between Curt Hitch # 13430 and # 13408 is that the # 13430 has a round cross tube whereas the # 13408 has a square cross tube. This difference is primarily an aesthetic difference since both of these hitches have the same towing capacities. Another difference between the two hitches is how it attaches to the frame of your 2006 Jeep TJ. I attached a picture that shows the different mounting methods each hitch has. I also attached a picture of both of these hitches...

The part you are referring to is called a handle nut. We do have replacement 1/2 inch handle nuts available. Take a look at Handle Nut Assembly - Draw-Tite Replacement 1/2 inch, # 1332. • What is the Width of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13430 is There a Universal Available?
I went out to the warehouse and got the measurements for you on the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" part # 13430 which has been made for the 1997-2006 Wranglers. To the inside of the upright brackets it measures 42 3/4" To the outside if them it measures 43 3/8". If that hitch doesn't have the measurements you're looking for on your 1951 Chevrolet Advanced Design I recommend using the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, 22" to 66" Wide part...

Yes, the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13430 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2006 Jeep TJ Rubicon. This custom hitch will use existing holes in the Jeep's frame for a no-drill installation and it will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening. The hitch features a 4,000 pound towing weight capacity and a 400 pound tongue weight limit. I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference along with the written instructions. • Could Malone Pilot 2 Bike Platform Rack Clear Rear Spare of 2006 Jeep Wrangler
The Malone bike rack part # MPG2112 has 9-1/2 inches from the center of it's hitch pin hole to the wheel trays which means that if you measured from the hitch pin hole on your Wrangler out to the rear of the spare and it measured less than 9-1/2 inches this rack would fit and clear it easily. When we installed the Curt hitch part # 13430 on a 2006 Wrangler like yours we found that it had a distance of 8 inches from the pin hole out to furthest point on rear spare so there's a great chance...

  • Curt Hitch Recommendation for the 2002 Jeep Wrangler
Both the Curt hitch part # 13408 and the part # 13430 would work well on your 2002 Jeep Wrangler. Both have the same capacities and have 2 inch openings. The differences are that the # 13408 uses a different attachment method like you noticed and has a square cross tube whereas the # 13430 uses a round tube. Both are equally strong, some just prefer the look of one over the other. I attached pics of both of these hitches installed to let you decide which you like better. I attached install...

  • Towing a Boat with 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ
After doing a little bit of research I was able to determine the maximum tongue weight of your 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ is 300lbs and your maximum towing capacity is 2000lbs. So given the parameters that you're describing, you should be able to tow a small boat in your TJ. In case you don't already have a hitch you may want to look at the Curt Class III Receiver # 13430 , which is sized to fit your Jeep. To go along with the hitch you need the trailer wiring # 118356 and a ball mount. The...

  • Which Curt Trailer Hitches Fit a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
Curt trailer hitch # 13430 will fit on the 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I have included links to the installation details and a video showing a typical installation of hitch # 13430 for you. • Will an E-Bike Work with the Hollywood Racks SR2 Spare Tire Bike Carrier
I do have an option for you but the heaviest bike you can use on a spare tire bike rack like the Hollywood Racks SR2 2-Bike Carrier part # HRSR2 is 35 lbs. The reason for this has to do with both the strength of the connection point itself as well as the strength of the arms on a hanging style bike rack. Therefore, in order to carry an electric bike on your 1999 Jeep TJ you will need to use a platform style hitch mounted bike rack as well as a trailer hitch if you do not already have...
