Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan

Today on our 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan we're gonna be taking a look at showing you how to install a Curt class three custom fit trailer hitch receiver. Here's what our hitch is gonna look like once we have it installed. The cross tube's gonna be hidden nicely behind the bumper and all we're gonna see is the receiver tube sticking out. Our hitch is a class three hitch, which means it's gonna offer us that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. We have a really wide variety of options when it comes to accessories. Where we're gonna mount all of our accessories, to the hitch pin hole here on the side.

It is gonna accept a standard 5/8 pin and clip. These are not included in the kit, but you can pick them up here at etrailer.com, along with some locking devices to make sure your accessories are secure. Our safety chain connection point is gonna be a loop style welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. As you can see, we're not gonna have too much trouble getting most size hooks on or off. As far as weight capacity goes, our hitch is gonna have a 400 pound tongue weight, which is the maximum downward force through the receiver tube, along with a 4,000 pound gross trailer weight rating.

That's the amount our hitch can pull, including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it.It is designed to work with weight distribution systems as well. That's gonna be a separate component that's mounted on your trailer. That's gonna bump the tongue weight up to 500 pounds and the gross trailer weight up to 5,000 pounds. With all those numbers in mind, you always wanna double check your owners manual because you don't wanna exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight. I'd like to give you a few measurements, and that's gonna help you when you're looking for new accessories for your hitch.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper, it's right about 4 inches. The measurement's gonna come in handy when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have enough room and that they're not gonna come in contact with the rear bumper. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's right about 14 inches. That measurement's gonna help you when you're looking for a ball mount, to make sure you find the appropriate rise or drop to match up to your trailer. Also that height, I would recommend a bike rack or a cargo carrier with a raised shank.

That way, you can get a little bit more ground clearance out of it.Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin installation, we're gonna come to the back of our Grand Caravan. We'll come over to the passenger's side, where our exhaust is. We wanna follow our exhaust back a little bit to where it's right behind the rear tire. If we look up on the frame rail, we'll find our hanger. We need a little bit of room, so we're gonna loosen this bolt up and lower our exhaust down so we can get access to the frame rail. I'll be using a 13 millimeter socket to pull that bolt out. As you can see, our exhaust did come down a little bit, but not enough to really get access to the frame rail. So, if we follow our exhaust towards the front, right in front of the rear axle we'll have another hanger with that same size bolt holding it in place. I'll take my 13 millimeter socket, pull it out. It'll allow our exhaust to come down enough so we have some room to work with. At the bottom of our frame rail, we're gonna have several bolts. We're gonna need to pull these out. The one at the very back of our frame rail, we're gonna use a 15 millimeter socket. We wanna hold on to the hardware because we will be reusing it. On the driver's side, we're gonna have two bolts. We're gonna pull both of these out. I'm gonna be using an 18 millimeter socket to pull these out. We're gonna move over to the passenger side frame rail, but we're only gonna have two bolts. The one in the very back and one going towards the front. With an extra set of hands, we're gonna lift our hitch up. Make sure you clear the exhaust, go over it. We'll line up the holes in the frame and we'll take our factory hardware, and you'll secure the hitch down. You wanna make sure you get at least one piece on each side, that way the hitch will support itself. We won't have to worry about it falling down. I'm gonna come back to the corresponding sockets and I'm gonna tighten up the hardware holding our hitch in place. You wanna make sure you come back with a torque wrench. We'll torque all of our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. With our hitch torqued down, we can put our exhaust back in place and replace the hardware. That will finish up your look at the Curt class three custom fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Perfect video of how to install. Went in just like they suggested. Took me longer to raise the van than it did to install the tow bar. I would reccomend services to anyone else. 584009

After reading reviews about poor packaging and damaged product I was skeptical about ordering one. But to me this is the best hitch out there so I decided to take a chance and order one. I was not disappointed. My hitch came in an undamaged thick carboard box the had a couple of cardboard braces installed which kept the hitch from moving around to badly. My hitch was not structurally damaged, It had three scuff marks that were not through to bare metal and were not visible once installed on the vehicle. I sprayed some paint on the scuffed areas and installed the hitch with no problems. It fit just as it should. The videos and instructions were good tools for an easy installation. I put the van up on ramps and used the shipping box on the ground to slide the hitch under the van to keep from damaging the finish. I used a floor jack with a piece of carboard on the saddle to protect the hitch and lifted the hitch in place. Put a bolt in the drivers side to hold it up, installed passenger side bolts, installed the remaining drivers side bolts made sure everything was good, then torqued the bolts to spec. I did have to lower the exhaust just as the videos and instructions say to do but that was a very easy process with the van on the ramps. I can't say enough good things about my whole experience with this hitch, from the excellent price, the free shipping, the excellent packaging, the fit and finish, the ease of installation, the helpful videos and what seems to be a genuine concern for the satisfaction of the customer. Thank you etrailer, com! 595320

This install took quite a bit longer than 30 minutes, but bear in mind I did not have jacks or ramps, nor did I have power tools. Everything was done with a socket wrench. It is also definitely a two-person job. It's really heavy, and it's tough enough holding one side of it up when you're awkwardly positioned under the car. But the equipment itself seems solid, the instructions are well-written, and the instructional video on the website was extremely helpful. On the driver side, I did have an issue with some metal piece behind the bolt holes getting out of position as I removed each bolt. To get the holes realigned when re-installing the bolts, I used a screwdriver to torque the underlying metal piece (not even sure what it is behind there) while I screwed in the middle bolt. 550849

I previously installed an etrailer purchased hitch on an Elantra so I am using that experience for comparison. The hitch itself seems fine. However I cannot give the product an excellent review overall because of the wildly optimistic installation time given by etrailer and the difficulty involved. Even with a hydraulic lift (which few purchasers will have access to) and a helper, it is very unlikely anyone is going to do this job start to finish in 40 minutes unless everything goes perfectly and you have every necessary power tool at your disposal. First off, the idea of using existing hardware should send up red flags if you live anywhere where vehicles are exposed to moisture, let alone salt. Using existing hardware on anything other than a vehicle you just drove off the showroom floor means get ready to deal with bolts rusted in place and have the torch, penetrating oil, breaker bar, power drill, lots of bits and tap and dye set ready. My particular vehicle is an 09 Caravan with minimal rust underneath and none showing on the bolt head and immediate frame area. Nonetheless, in spite of pretreating the bolts the night before with penetrating oil and during the process, predictably, only 4 of the 7 bolts involved came out cleanly and one bolt head snapped off. Fortunately I had the extra tools needed. Heavy duty drill. Several bits of different sizes. Tap and Die set. Extra bolts. Dodge and Chrysler get yet another F for poor design. Other manufacturers seem to have figured out using existing hardware for aftermarket attachments is a bad idea. They still haven't. The hitch itself is just a welded hunk of powder coated steel and does what it's supposed to. No complaints about the hitch. But etrailer could do much better to advise customers of the likely difficulties they will encounter installing this hitch on anything other than a new vehicle. Lastly unless you are abnormally strong and coordinated you will need another person to hold the muffler out of the way or find a way to ratchet strap it down and to the side. You will not be able to access those bolts otherwise. 207399

Great hitch, super easy installation, only took me about 30 minutes to install by myself. It's kind of hidden under the vehicle and only the receiver and chain hooks show. Nice clean fit. 423787

All the products have been awesome. We love the kuat bike rack and locks. The trailer hitch was super easy to install and has held up very well through our winters up here in Northwest Ohio. I have since purchased another hitch for my sons vehicle.

Could not believe how easy the installation was. 1 I backed the van onto a pair of ramps. 2 took the one bolt out of each of the three exhaust hangers and dropped (lowered) the exhaust 3 remove the bolts in the underside of van (different head sizes) 4 Blocked up one side of hitch against frame (using a stack of 6"x6" wood blocks...a friend holding it would of been better but "friends" seem to disappear when I need help). Put bolts in but don't tighten until all are in and located properly. Tighten 5 reinstall exhaust hangers. NOTE: hitch 13364 does not look like the one in the install video. The cutout on the right hand (passenger side AC) appears to no longer be utilized. Instead of there being 3 anchor bolts on the passenger side there is only two. I don't know how, if at all, this affects strength or capacity. Note2: Hitch was received quickly but was also sticking out the side of the box. All in all it appears to be a nice DIY product 83169

So far hitch is working fine. Only problem we have is that the muffler is so close to hitch it banged constantly. I had to use a coat hanger to hold muffler away from hitch.

Thanks for the one year follow up. Glad to hear that you were able to work something out so that the muffler and hitch were not in contact. We have a helpful article that describes other recommendations for fixing the exhaust rattle such as: adjusting the exhaust hanger, replace the rubber isolator, or take it to a muffler shop. You might consider one of the options if there is further adjustments needed for your hitch and exhaust system.

This is my second time using Etrailer.com for hitching/towing needs and thusly, this is my second hassle-free, perfect, great experience with them. I was in a pinch and needed a Curt 13364 hitch for a trip to OK that came up quickly. Every other supplier I could find could not give me any kind of shipping time or schedule. I called Etrailer and spoke to Katie D. who took the time and was very courteous and professional with my request. She was able, on a Friday afternoon, to work with me for a proper solution to have the correct hitch shipped to me in DEEP southwest Texas in time for installation before leaving the following Thursday. Katie D., once the product shipped, kept me updated via email with a tracking schedule that helped me to ensure I would receive it well in time and in good shape, and it did arrive just fine. Regarding the installation on my 2014 Grand Caravan, pardon the pun but it was installed without a hitch. Taking about 20 minutes to install it went up perfectly with no drilling or cutting of the vehicle body. Utilizing existing bolts in the vehicle, all the holes lined up perfectly. I cannot say enough good things about etrailer.com and Katie D., they were instrumental in providing what I needed in a timely manner. I would definitely use them again, and recommend them highly!!!!! 133290

I'm new to the hitch game. This one seems solid, but I've yet to tow with it. A couple of words of advice on installation. First off find help if you can to lift this into place. I didn't have any, but was able to strap one side up under the car and then hand tighten the bolts on the other side. If you have a jack there's a picture from another review that looks like a great way to lift into place using one. The muffler was a pain to get around even after removing the supports in my case. You may want to use a strap to help keep it out of the way. I found the instructions confusing that they mention two different sizes for the same factory bolts. They reference bolt head size first (15mm, 18mm) then they reference the bolt size (10mm, 12mm). In order to torque said bolts you'll need a pretty long socket extension to get low enough (past the undercarriage). Possibly a breaker bar for extra leverage. If you buy the additional wiring kit (118534) you may need item number 185917 (zinc plated hex flange nut m8) as there isn't one in the kit. Although my battery terminal is m6 not m8 so double check. The wiring kit was also pretty friendly to install, just a lot of crawling under the car to route the battery wire. This site has tons of great videos and user reviews that helped get this installed. Happy with it so far. 571488

I recently ordered a Curt Class 3 trailer receiver through ETRAILER for my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. I purchased it because in the near future I will be purchasing a bike carrier. I received it within a week. It came packed with good clear directions. The only problem I had was trying to install it by myself. After some brainstorming I was able to rig up a solution on my floor jack and it went right up and in with no problem. I will be ordering more from ETRAILER. 398266

Product arrived as promised. I waited a few days to gather tools I needed (namely metric impact sockets) and warmer weather. Installed the hitch last evening. It took about an hour. Most of this time was jacking up, placing jack stands and removing THREE exhaust hanger bolts. I had to remove one about midway before the exhaust would lower enough for me to get to the chassis bolts on the passenger side. Your install video shows a hitch with three passenger side bolts but the actual hitch only has two. Apparently a later version which is exactly what I needed. Actual placement and bolting of hitch and bolting back the exhaust hangers only took about 15 minutes. I am extremely pleased with the neatness and appearance. You see nothing but the receiver box. No ugly cross bars like some hitches show. Thanks for a great product. 170611

Easy and simple mounting, this vehicle specific receiver utilized the existing fasteners already attached to my van. The most difficult, time consuming part was unbolting the exhaust and moving aside to mount to the passenger side frame rail. Total time to install was maybe 30-minutes once van was setup and tools laid out. 162922

The hitch fit just perfect. I didn't even have trouble lining up the bolts. After taking the mounting bolts out of the two rear exhaust hangers, I was able to slip the passenger side of the hitch on top of the exhaust and put a small floor jack under the hitch just to the right of the receiver. I was able to jack the hitch up and move it a little until it was in place, then put in the bolts. The video needs to be updated to show there are only two mounting holes on the passenger side (the printed instructions are correct). Also, you can remount the exhaust hangers in their original holes. The hitch went on in less than an hour and with the jack was no problem for me to do alone. This is the third hitch I've purchased here and they have all gone on easy. 88292

Ive use the hitch for my bike rack and pulling a utility trailer, no problem at all with it. I did have a noise that I tracked down to the exhaust pipe by the hitch. I was able to bend the exhaust mount just a little to give me an extra 1/4 inch clearance and that took care of the problem. This is a well made product.

I am sorry to hear your trailer hitch arrived flexed. This can happen in standard warehousing and shipping because the hitch mounting arms are made from a mild steel. There are a couple of common ways we recommend to correct this flex. I have linked a help article on this topic for you.

The smaller of the two would be the 10 mm torque spec and the larger threads are for the 12 mm torque spec.

  • Differences Between the Class III Hitches For the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan
There are two Class III hitches available for the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. The Draw-Tite Class III 2-Inch Hitch, part # 75579, and the Curt Class III 2-Inch Hitch, part # 13364. Both of the hitches use a square tube design and will install in the same location on the vehicle. So they will all look the same on the rear of your Grand Caravan. The difference between the Curt hitch, # 13364, and the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75579, is the mounting bracket on the passenger side. The...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country that Doesn't Require Fascia Trimming
Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75579 will fit all models of the 2014 Chrysler Town and Country. There should be no bumper fascia trimming required. The only trimming mentioned in the instructions, linked to the right, is possibly on a mudflap. I have also included a link to a video showing a typical installation for you. The Curt Hitch part # 13364 that you referenced would most likely require you to trim the fascia so I would not recommend it for you. If you plan on doing some towing...

  • Fixing Muffler Rattling Against Curt Class III Hitch # 13364 on 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan
What you describe is a fairly common occurrence. The spot where the hitch sits on the vehicle does not vary from Grand Caravans of the same model year. However, since the exhaust system uses flexible rubber isolators and muffler hangers that are easily manipulated, the exact location of the exhaust system can vary quite a bit between vehicles of the same year, make and model. We've actually come up with a help article that specifically addresses this issue (see provided link), which...

  • Choosing a Hitch for 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with Stow-N-Go Seats
Your 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with Stow-N-Go Seats can be fitted with either a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch or a heavier duty 2-inch Class III type. We offer options in both sizes and all will fit your version of the Grand Caravan with Stow-N-Go seats. The link will let you see all options. I suggest a heavier-duty Class III type hitch because it will give you a greater safety margin and also be more widely compatible with a whole range of accessories like bike racks and cargo...

  • Trailer Hitch and Related Towing Items for 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE Without Tow Package
You ask many good questions about towing with your 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and we certainly can help you. It is perfectly okay to install a trailer hitch on a vehicle that does not have a factory tow package. What matters is that the hitch's and vehicle's weight capacities not be exceeded. The term 'tow package' does NOT always mean exactly the same thing. Various auto makers will use that same terminology for vehicles that differ substantially in their included equipment. For instance,...

  • What Size Bolts Come with the Curt Hitch 13364
The difference in diameters of the install hardware is because the fastener sizes listed in step 4 aren't the size of the wrenches used on them. It's the size of the threaded portion of the bolts. Basically the instructions are confusing, but not incorrect. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.

I attached a link to the install instructions for the part # 13364 that you have. Step 4 has all of the torque specs for the included hardware of the hitch. You will need a torque wrench like the part # ALL944001 to get the bolts tightened properly. Local auto parts stores will typically allow you to borrow tools like this as well. Basically you would need to use the torque wrench to ensure that you have the bolts tightened properly. I attached an install video that shows how the...

  • Ground Clearance at Rear of Vehicle after Hitch Install on a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country
The Mopar hitch for your 2012 Chrysler Town and Country couldn't sit any higher than the Curt Hitch part # 13364 would as this hitch tucks right under the rear bumper. The # 13364 will give you about 12 inches of clearance, and since there is no way an OEM hitch could sit up any higher than this one this would be your best option since it is most likely less expensive.

  • Does Curt Trailer Hitch for 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Come with any Install Hardware
The Curt trailer hitch part # 13364 does not come with any install hardware as it uses all bolts that are already on the vehicle for installation. I reached out to my contact at Curt to determine why that bolt is not included in the # 13364. He took a look at that specific video with me and we were able to determine that there was a change in the hitch design. In the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan video which I've attached, there were 3 holes and a notch on the passenger side where the AC...

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2010 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan
Your 2010 Chrysler Town and Country minivan can be equipped with either a 1-1/4-inch Class II or a 2-inch Class III trailer hitch. All options are shown on the link provided. I suggest the Class III hitch # 13364 from Curt; this is the most popular hitch for your vehicle. This 2-inch hitch will offer better compatibility with a broad range of hitch mount accessories like cargo carriers and bike racks, and if you will be towing it will provide higher capacity than the Class II hitches....

  • Are 5 Bolts Enough to Safely Install Curt Trailer Hitch 13364 on a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country
Apparently, on the 2014 Chrysler Town and Country, on the passenger side frame rail there is a bolt that is holding on the bumper and it should not or cannot be removed. Otherwise there would likely be 6 bolts instead of 5 holding on Curt trailer hitch # 13364. The sheer strength of the bolts, even though there are just 5 of them, is more than enough to handle the horizontal pulling force of towing a trailer. The clamp strength of all of the bolts is more than enough for the tongue weight...

Based on an installation we did of Curt hitch # 13364 on a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country you will not have to trim the rear fascia to install the hitch. However, it may press up some on the bottom of the fascia directly above the receiver. I have included a link to a video showing installation on a 2016 model for you.
