Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan - Curt

Today on our 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan, we'll be installing the Curt two inch receiver tube 00:00:06 hitch, part number 13364. Here's what our hitch is going to look once installed. As you can see the cross tube is a square tube, and it's hidden behind the bumper, while the receiver tube is a two inch class three where it will come out and be very accessible to utilize with our accessories. It has a 400 pound tongue capacity, with a 4,000 pound towing capacity. Unless we had a weight distribution hitch, then we have a 500 tongue capacity, with a 5,00 tow capacity. Next I'll give you a couple measurements to assist you selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4 1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13 1/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. We'll now go ahead with the installation.

Now, to begin our install we're first going to need to lower the exhaust. To lower exhaust we'll remove the bolts that secure the metal hangers to the body of the vehicle. Here we have one at the tailpipe, and one forward of the rear axle. If you're looking for some additional working room above the exhaust you could also remove the bolt the secures the metal hanger to the body here at the front of the muffler. Now with our fasteners out of the way, you can see we now have access to both rear frame rails. Starting here at the rear of the frame rail we'll remove to two rear fasteners. Here on the driver's side, we'll have three fasteners that need to be removed. With all our hardware out, we're ready to install the hitch. We'll put the hitch on top of the exhaust over on the passenger's side and bring the driver's side up to the frame. We'll install each fastener finger tight until we have them all in place.

Now we have our fasteners started here on the driver's side move over to the passenger's side and repeat the same process with the two on that side. Once we have all our fasteners installed we're ready to tighten them down. Once they're tightened down we can torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all our hardware tightened down and torqued to specification we can reinstall the exhaust. We'll just reuse the manufactures fasteners to put our hitch back in place. With the exhaust hardware reinstalled and tightened down, this will complete the install of the Curt Hitch, part number 13364, on our 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. .

This install took quite a bit longer than 30 minutes, but bear in mind I did not have jacks or ramps, nor did I have power tools. Everything was done with a socket wrench. It is also definitely a two-person job. It's really heavy, and it's tough enough holding one side of it up when you're awkwardly positioned under the car. But the equipment itself seems solid, the instructions are well-written, and the instructional video on the website was extremely helpful. On the driver side, I did have an issue with some metal piece behind the bolt holes getting out of position as I removed each bolt. To get the holes realigned when re-installing the bolts, I used a screwdriver to torque the underlying metal piece (not even sure what it is behind there) while I screwed in the middle bolt. 550849

After reading reviews about poor packaging and damaged product I was skeptical about ordering one. But to me this is the best hitch out there so I decided to take a chance and order one. I was not disappointed. My hitch came in an undamaged thick carboard box the had a couple of cardboard braces installed which kept the hitch from moving around to badly. My hitch was not structurally damaged, It had three scuff marks that were not through to bare metal and were not visible once installed on the vehicle. I sprayed some paint on the scuffed areas and installed the hitch with no problems. It fit just as it should. The videos and instructions were good tools for an easy installation. I put the van up on ramps and used the shipping box on the ground to slide the hitch under the van to keep from damaging the finish. I used a floor jack with a piece of carboard on the saddle to protect the hitch and lifted the hitch in place. Put a bolt in the drivers side to hold it up, installed passenger side bolts, installed the remaining drivers side bolts made sure everything was good, then torqued the bolts to spec. I did have to lower the exhaust just as the videos and instructions say to do but that was a very easy process with the van on the ramps. I can't say enough good things about my whole experience with this hitch, from the excellent price, the free shipping, the excellent packaging, the fit and finish, the ease of installation, the helpful videos and what seems to be a genuine concern for the satisfaction of the customer. Thank you etrailer, com! 595320

Great hitch, super easy installation, only took me about 30 minutes to install by myself. It's kind of hidden under the vehicle and only the receiver and chain hooks show. Nice clean fit. 423787

All the products have been awesome. We love the kuat bike rack and locks. The trailer hitch was super easy to install and has held up very well through our winters up here in Northwest Ohio. I have since purchased another hitch for my sons vehicle.

took twice for the people at the dealership to figure out how to install it, I had to show them. so far no complaints except hitting my shins on the hitch because I forget to remove the ball. 568038

I'm new to the hitch game. This one seems solid, but I've yet to tow with it. A couple of words of advice on installation. First off find help if you can to lift this into place. I didn't have any, but was able to strap one side up under the car and then hand tighten the bolts on the other side. If you have a jack there's a picture from another review that looks like a great way to lift into place using one. The muffler was a pain to get around even after removing the supports in my case. You may want to use a strap to help keep it out of the way. I found the instructions confusing that they mention two different sizes for the same factory bolts. They reference bolt head size first (15mm, 18mm) then they reference the bolt size (10mm, 12mm). In order to torque said bolts you'll need a pretty long socket extension to get low enough (past the undercarriage). Possibly a breaker bar for extra leverage. If you buy the additional wiring kit (118534) you may need item number 185917 (zinc plated hex flange nut m8) as there isn't one in the kit. Although my battery terminal is m6 not m8 so double check. The wiring kit was also pretty friendly to install, just a lot of crawling under the car to route the battery wire. This site has tons of great videos and user reviews that helped get this installed. Happy with it so far. 571488

The hitch fit just perfect. I didn't even have trouble lining up the bolts. After taking the mounting bolts out of the two rear exhaust hangers, I was able to slip the passenger side of the hitch on top of the exhaust and put a small floor jack under the hitch just to the right of the receiver. I was able to jack the hitch up and move it a little until it was in place, then put in the bolts. The video needs to be updated to show there are only two mounting holes on the passenger side (the printed instructions are correct). Also, you can remount the exhaust hangers in their original holes. The hitch went on in less than an hour and with the jack was no problem for me to do alone. This is the third hitch I've purchased here and they have all gone on easy. 88292

Ive use the hitch for my bike rack and pulling a utility trailer, no problem at all with it. I did have a noise that I tracked down to the exhaust pipe by the hitch. I was able to bend the exhaust mount just a little to give me an extra 1/4 inch clearance and that took care of the problem. This is a well made product.

Could not believe how easy the installation was. 1 I backed the van onto a pair of ramps. 2 took the one bolt out of each of the three exhaust hangers and dropped (lowered) the exhaust 3 remove the bolts in the underside of van (different head sizes) 4 Blocked up one side of hitch against frame (using a stack of 6"x6" wood blocks...a friend holding it would of been better but "friends" seem to disappear when I need help). Put bolts in but don't tighten until all are in and located properly. Tighten 5 reinstall exhaust hangers. NOTE: hitch 13364 does not look like the one in the install video. The cutout on the right hand (passenger side AC) appears to no longer be utilized. Instead of there being 3 anchor bolts on the passenger side there is only two. I don't know how, if at all, this affects strength or capacity. Note2: Hitch was received quickly but was also sticking out the side of the box. All in all it appears to be a nice DIY product 83169

So far hitch is working fine. Only problem we have is that the muffler is so close to hitch it banged constantly. I had to use a coat hanger to hold muffler away from hitch.

Thanks for the one year follow up. Glad to hear that you were able to work something out so that the muffler and hitch were not in contact. We have a helpful article that describes other recommendations for fixing the exhaust rattle such as: adjusting the exhaust hanger, replace the rubber isolator, or take it to a muffler shop. You might consider one of the options if there is further adjustments needed for your hitch and exhaust system.

Easy and simple mounting, this vehicle specific receiver utilized the existing fasteners already attached to my van. The most difficult, time consuming part was unbolting the exhaust and moving aside to mount to the passenger side frame rail. Total time to install was maybe 30-minutes once van was setup and tools laid out. 162922

Product arrived as promised. I waited a few days to gather tools I needed (namely metric impact sockets) and warmer weather. Installed the hitch last evening. It took about an hour. Most of this time was jacking up, placing jack stands and removing THREE exhaust hanger bolts. I had to remove one about midway before the exhaust would lower enough for me to get to the chassis bolts on the passenger side. Your install video shows a hitch with three passenger side bolts but the actual hitch only has two. Apparently a later version which is exactly what I needed. Actual placement and bolting of hitch and bolting back the exhaust hangers only took about 15 minutes. I am extremely pleased with the neatness and appearance. You see nothing but the receiver box. No ugly cross bars like some hitches show. Thanks for a great product. 170611

I recently ordered a Curt Class 3 trailer receiver through ETRAILER for my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. I purchased it because in the near future I will be purchasing a bike carrier. I received it within a week. It came packed with good clear directions. The only problem I had was trying to install it by myself. After some brainstorming I was able to rig up a solution on my floor jack and it went right up and in with no problem. I will be ordering more from ETRAILER. 398266

I previously installed an etrailer purchased hitch on an Elantra so I am using that experience for comparison. The hitch itself seems fine. However I cannot give the product an excellent review overall because of the wildly optimistic installation time given by etrailer and the difficulty involved. Even with a hydraulic lift (which few purchasers will have access to) and a helper, it is very unlikely anyone is going to do this job start to finish in 40 minutes unless everything goes perfectly and you have every necessary power tool at your disposal. First off, the idea of using existing hardware should send up red flags if you live anywhere where vehicles are exposed to moisture, let alone salt. Using existing hardware on anything other than a vehicle you just drove off the showroom floor means get ready to deal with bolts rusted in place and have the torch, penetrating oil, breaker bar, power drill, lots of bits and tap and dye set ready. My particular vehicle is an 09 Caravan with minimal rust underneath and none showing on the bolt head and immediate frame area. Nonetheless, in spite of pretreating the bolts the night before with penetrating oil and during the process, predictably, only 4 of the 7 bolts involved came out cleanly and one bolt head snapped off. Fortunately I had the extra tools needed. Heavy duty drill. Several bits of different sizes. Tap and Die set. Extra bolts. Dodge and Chrysler get yet another F for poor design. Other manufacturers seem to have figured out using existing hardware for aftermarket attachments is a bad idea. They still haven't. The hitch itself is just a welded hunk of powder coated steel and does what it's supposed to. No complaints about the hitch. But etrailer could do much better to advise customers of the likely difficulties they will encounter installing this hitch on anything other than a new vehicle. Lastly unless you are abnormally strong and coordinated you will need another person to hold the muffler out of the way or find a way to ratchet strap it down and to the side. You will not be able to access those bolts otherwise. 207399

This is my second time using Etrailer.com for hitching/towing needs and thusly, this is my second hassle-free, perfect, great experience with them. I was in a pinch and needed a Curt 13364 hitch for a trip to OK that came up quickly. Every other supplier I could find could not give me any kind of shipping time or schedule. I called Etrailer and spoke to Katie D. who took the time and was very courteous and professional with my request. She was able, on a Friday afternoon, to work with me for a proper solution to have the correct hitch shipped to me in DEEP southwest Texas in time for installation before leaving the following Thursday. Katie D., once the product shipped, kept me updated via email with a tracking schedule that helped me to ensure I would receive it well in time and in good shape, and it did arrive just fine. Regarding the installation on my 2014 Grand Caravan, pardon the pun but it was installed without a hitch. Taking about 20 minutes to install it went up perfectly with no drilling or cutting of the vehicle body. Utilizing existing bolts in the vehicle, all the holes lined up perfectly. I cannot say enough good things about etrailer.com and Katie D., they were instrumental in providing what I needed in a timely manner. I would definitely use them again, and recommend them highly!!!!! 133290

The hitch works okay if you can get parts in and out of the receiver. Mine for, some reason, is very tight and requires the use of a sledge hammer. 704089

Comments

Sometimes the powder coat can be a little too thick inside the hitch receiver. When this happens, you can try sanding off some of the powder coat inside the receiver to make it easier to install hitch accessories.

Works like a champ. I love how its kinda hidden by the bumper so it doesn't stick out! Only took about 15 mins to install and that was by myself. Just backed the van up some car ramps and had plenty of clearance to install. It takes longer to loosen the muffler than it does to install! Just follow the instructions and the videos and you'll be fine installing this by yourself. 699478

The ball mount was great. The instructions were good and the mounting was very easy. It has been very useful on trips. The wiring harness on the other hand has never worked correctly. The cable was not long enough to get a proper box mount. I wound up taking it to a shop and paying someone to finish the install so, it could be properly grounded. I will absolutely buy another mount, but will have someone else do the wiring. 665963

- 13364
by:

High Quality - price was extremely low considering the weight of steel and welding quality along with epoxy paint. The instructions say it’s a 25 minute install - well, if you are 69 yrs old like me and do it on the floor of your garage, it takes about 90 minutes. Still, absolutely worth the $ and time. 661088

Fit perfectly on my 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan. Takes longer than 45 minutes to install if the vehicle is more than a few years old, due to rusty bolts. People complained that they broke bolts, so I used penetrating oil and slowly worked the rear two bolts out. Took longer, but they didn't break. I installed the hitch myself by using a transmission jack to raise it up. 661080

A big fella like me and no vehicle hoist, getting a little person to undo the 3rd muffler bolt is key to getting it installed. Other than that tiny issue, this was a piece of cake to install. Plus once installed as the directions say to cut the fascia, don't do it unless it requires it. With the hitch installed, it barely even pushed against it, so bonus there. I will definitely buy from etrailer again in the future. 655720

Fast shipping. The instructions that came with the Curt hitch have the wrong bolt sizes. Fortunately I watched the great videos from etrailer and they stated the exact sizes wrenches I would need. I also viewed user submitted photos that had great tips on how to support the hitch in to place which in my case for a minivan was extremely wide and heavy. 637755

Comments

The bolt sizes referred to in the instructions refer to the diameter, thread pitch and length of the threaded portion of the bolt, and not the actual size wrench necessary to install the bolt.

I was floored by the ordering process and, once again, I'm floored by the customer service even after delivery!!!!! I mean wow!! What company emails you a full list WITH instructions AND videos on every single product you order?!?! etrailer does!! I am wowed beyond anything I could have imagined!! Seriously though, these purchases were saved for and researched and then researched some more over the past month and in ONE PHONE CALL, all of our questions were answered and there were even things we didn't know we would need that Nicole covered (her ext is 79396). I had one additional question and called back and Derek (72916) provided the information effortlessly and even offered his number so that my husband could call if he had any questions during installation. I felt like I was talking to family. There is nothing more valuable than feeling like the person with whom you are speaking to is for you and not against you/doesn't care. We will be using your company again and again and we will be referring our family and friends to you! When the UPS guy delivered the box, it was badly ripped and there were huge holes in it. Understandably because of the weight of the hitch. I was not hopeful that everything was still in the box because of how big the holes were. But, upon opening, my husband and I saw that there was another well packaged box inside with the remainder of our order. We haven't opened or installed anything yet, however, the quality of everything seems top notch. Before I stepped away from my full time career with the Federal Aviation Administration to work part time and raise babies, It was my job and mission to teach my team and cultivate outstanding customer service. Doing that over the phone, at times, provides difficult. Please thank everyone who helped us get our products!! Especially Nicole and Derek! Well done etrailer!! 615470

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Hardware Torque Requirements for Curt Class II Hitch 13364 on 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • The Curt hitch # 13364 that you referenced is a confirmed fit on your 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan and it appears on the linked page that displays all hitches made for your GC. These available hitches include two sizes, both the Class II 1-1/4-inch type like # 13364 and the Class III 2-inch like # e98854. Currently (December 2018) for their hitch # 13364 Curt specifies 48-ft-lbs of torque for the 10mm fasteners and 86-ft-lbs for the 12mm fasteners. This could potentially change if they ever...

  • What Trailer Hitch Fits a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan with Stow-N-Go Seats
  • All of our trailer hitches will actually accommodate the Stow-N-Go seats in your 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan! Out of the available options I recommend going with a 2" receiver as it is compatible with more accessories than the 1-1/4" options. All of our 2" receivers mount the exact same way so I recommend installing the etrailer Trailer Hitch # e98854. This has a tongue weight (TW) rating of 400 lbs and a gross towing weight (GTW) rating of 4,000 lbs. when used with a weight distribution...

  • Recommended Class III Trailer Hitch For 2010 Chrysler Town and Country
  • The recommended Curt Class III for your 2010 Chrysler Town and Country is Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13364. The hitch fits the Town and Country from 2008 to 2016, the Dodge Grand Caravan from 2008 to 2018 as well as the Dodge and Ram CV from 2012 to 2015 and the Volkswagen Routan from 2009 to 2014. On the # 13364, there is no drilling required for installation and the exhaust must be temporarily lowered for installation. Trimming of the fascia may be required for hitch installation....

  • Will Equal-i-zer WD Shank # EQ90-02-4600 Clear Rear Bumper of 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank # EQ90-02-4600 referenced in your question features the 8 inch maximum rise that you are needing and has an overall length of 18 inches. With regards to clearing the rear bumper on your Grand Caravan with it in the rise position, an important measurement to note is the 5 inch distance between the hitch pin hole on the shank the the start of the angled support plate. I have attached an image that clarifies this dimension. We have installed both...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver With the Highest Ground Clearance for a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country
  • We have actually installed both Curt Trailer Hitch Receivers, parts # C12264 and # 13364, as well as both Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receivers, parts # 36455 and # 75579, on similar 2012 Chrysler Town and Countrys. Out of all 4 of those choices the Draw-Tite Class II 1-1/4 inch receiver # 36455 offers the most ground clearance at 13 inches. This receiver has a max Gross Trailer Weight of 3,500 lbs and a max Tongue Weight of 300 lbs. If you need wiring for your Town and Country I recommend...

  • Exhaust Mounting Hardware for Curt Trailer Hitch # 13364
  • I reached out to my contact at Curt to determine why that bolt is not included in the # 13364. He took a look at that specific video with me and we were able to determine that there was a change in the hitch design. In the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan video which I've attached, there were 3 holes and a notch on the passenger side where the AC lines ran. They changed the hitch to only have the 2 bolt holes on that passenger side so there was no need to include that exhaust hanger hardware...

  • Differences Between the Class III Hitches For the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • There are two Class III hitches available for the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. The Draw-Tite Class III 2-Inch Hitch, part # 75579, and the Curt Class III 2-Inch Hitch, part # 13364. Both of the hitches use a square tube design and will install in the same location on the vehicle. So they will all look the same on the rear of your Grand Caravan. The difference between the Curt hitch, # 13364, and the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75579, is the mounting bracket on the passenger side. The...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2012 Chrysler Town And Country
  • We do offer some Class lll hitches for a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country. I did some research on your van and found that the trailer towing weight for your Town And Country is 3,600 lbs, and is 3,500 lbs if you have the Stow-N-Go seating. The trailer hitch I recommend is the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13364. This is a Class lll hitch and has a 2 inch receiver opening. You will want to consider where the receiver end is under your van when you want to install any accessories like...

  • Cleaning out Weld Nuts on 2014 Chrysler Town and Country for Installing Trailer Hitch
  • The issue you are experiencing with threading the bolts into the existing holes on your Chrysler's frame is actually not too uncommon. What we recommend doing to clean the weld nuts is to simply use some spray lubricant and a good wire brush like # 814113. You will just want to spray the lubricant (something like WD-40 or Blaster Lubricant) inside the weld nut and then let it sit for a few minutes. Then you can scrub the bolt hole with the wire brush, loosening up any corrosion or grime...

  • Choosing a Hitch for 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with Stow-N-Go Seats
  • Your 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with Stow-N-Go Seats can be fitted with either a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch or a heavier duty 2-inch Class III type. We offer options in both sizes and all will fit your version of the Grand Caravan with Stow-N-Go seats. The link will let you see all options. I suggest a heavier-duty Class III type hitch because it will give you a greater safety margin and also be more widely compatible with a whole range of accessories like bike racks and cargo...

  • I spoke to my contact at CURT who said some minor trimming of the fascia is required for the hitch installation on your 2012 Town and Country, otherwise the receiver will impinge on the bumper cover. The area that needs to be trimmed is 2-3/4 inch wide by 1/2 inch tall. I have included a diagram of the area that needs to be trimmed as well as a link to installation details. • Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country that Doesn't Require Fascia Trimming
  • Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75579 will fit all models of the 2014 Chrysler Town and Country. There should be no bumper fascia trimming required. The only trimming mentioned in the instructions, linked to the right, is possibly on a mudflap. I have also included a link to a video showing a typical installation for you. A better option that I can guarantee will allow you to open your rear hatch with the carrier opened is the Rola Swinging Enclosed Cargo Carrier # 59109. This swings out and away from the rear of the vehicle for unrestricted access to the rear of the vehicle.

The # 13364 will give you about 12 inches of clearance, and since there is no way an OEM hitch could sit up any higher than this one this would be your best option since it is most likely less expensive.
