Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2004 Dodge Sprinter - Curt

Today on our 2004 Dodge Sprinter, well be installing the Curt Hitch part number 13250. This is what our hitch will look like once installed. Next well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to outermost edge of the bumper is 2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 16-1/2 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. Now well go ahead with installation.

To begin the install of our hitch, well first need to relocate some airlines that run to the bumper. To relocate the airlines, well first remove the cap and then the securing nut for the bracket. Then well be able to remove the line nipple from the bracket. Next well go ahead and remove the first fastener closest to the end of the line. Once we remove that fastener, well remove it from the frame where our hitch will be attaching.

Well go ahead and roll the line out of the way and store it for reinstallation later. Now note, each process we do here on one side were going to repeat identically on the opposite side. Next well move over to the passenger side and repeat the same process for that airline. Next well need to remove a frame fastener on each side. This frame fastener is also the support bracket for the rear step bumper. Once we remove the fastener, well go ahead and set it aside.

Now were ready to start installing the new hitch. To secure the hitch, well take the long bolt and half-inch flat washer along with a half-inch flange nut to secure three out of the four attachment points that go through the frame. The fourth attachment point will not actually secure the hitch but will go back into the step bumper bracket. We can also reinstall the manufacturers bolt, making sure that it is still flushed with the bracket on the inside of the frame rail. Before we put our hitch in place, because this application has a step bumper bracket, well need to twist off the removable corner of the spacer block. Once we do that, well then take our bolt and flat washer, put it into position far enough that it will hold the spacer block up against the frame. Well go ahead and put several of our new fasteners in place to help hold the spacer block.

Now with that hardware in place, its a good idea to get an extra set of hands when were going to go ahead and put our hitch into position. Once in place, well go ahead and push our bolts into position and through the attachment points of the hitch. Now with the hitch resting on our new hardware, well go ahead and install the flange nuts for the new hardware. Well go ahead and install the last bolt through the frame, through the spacer block and then through the hitch securing it with the flange nut. Now with all the hardware in place, well go ahead and tighten it down. Next using the hitch as a template, well need to drill a hole into the bottom of the frame. Using the step bit process, well start with the smaller pilot bit and work our way up to the final size. Now with our hole drilled in the frame, well need to make an access hole on this application. The access hole will need to be at least an inch and an eighth as per the instructions. Once again well go ahead and make a pilot hole and then well use our hole saw to cut out the large one and an eighth inch hole. Now with the hole cut out, were ready to go ahead and install our hardware into the frame. Well take the bolt leader, go through the attachment point and out the access hole in the bottom of the frame. Then well slide on the block and thread on the carriage bolt. Well feed the block up into the frame followed by the carriage bolt and pull them into position. Once into position, well remove the pull wire and secure it with the half-inch flange nut. Now with all our hardware in place, well make sure everythings tightened down. Next well go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in instructions. Now with our hitch secured and torqued to specifications, well go ahead and reinstall the airlines that we removed earlier. There you have it and were ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our Curt Hitch part number 13250 on our 2004 Dodge Sprinter. .

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • Is Drilling Required for Trailer Hitch Installation on a 2006 Dodge Sprinter Van
Yes, drilling is required for installation of the Curt Hitch # 13250, on the 2006 Dodge Sprinter Van. Two 9/16 inch holes will be drilled into the bottom of the frame rail and two larger holes in the bottom of the frame rail will need to be enlarged for installation for hardware into the vehicle frame. To make drilling into the frame easier, a 9/16 inch Rotabroach Hole Cutting Tool, # 6811, is recommended. I have provided installation instructions for you to review, see link.

  • Trailer Hitch for 2006 Dodge Sprinter, 118 Inch Wheelbase that Doesn't Require Modifying Step Bumper
Your 2006 Dodge Sprinter with 118 inch wheelbase and step bumper should look like the one in the picture I have included. The hitch does fit models with the factory step bumper. You will not have to modify the vehicle at all to install the hitch. The only special step is to snap off a corner of the included spacer plates (for models with step bumper only). The plates are designed for this. I have included a link to the instructions and a link to a video showing installation for you. The...

  • When Installing Curt Trailer Hitch On 2005 Dodge Sprinter Is Vehicle Modification Required
As the instructions for the Curt Hitch # 13250 state, the spare tire will need to be relocated, the hanger bracket will need to be modified, and you will have to drill two 9/16 inch holes in the frame using the trailer hitch as a template. And existing holes in the frame will need to be enlarged to 1-1/8 inches. As far as promoting rust, the hitch is powder coated steel, and is corrosion resistant.

  • Which Trailer Hitch for 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
We have several hitch fits for your 2014 Sprinter, but in order to recommend one, I'd need to know if your Sprinter is a 3/4 ton (2500) or a 1 ton (3500) model. I'll also need to know the wheelbase (distance between front and rear axle, measured center to center) and whether the vehicle has the factory step bumper or the regular bumper. If you can reply with this information, I'd be happy to make some recommendations. You can also click the provided link, and click the arrow on the drop...

  • No Space for Hitch Installation on 2005 Freightliner Sprinter 2500HC
The Curt hitch # 13250 that you referenced is specified as a fit on the 118-inch SRW, 140-inch SRW, 158-inch SRW and the 158-inch DRW versions of the 2005 Freightliner Sprinter HC, but the base model only. If yours is an RV cutaway/cab-and-chassis with modifications and the suspension reaches all the way to the rear bumper then there is no hitch that will fit according to my contact at Curt. We do offer adjustable/universal RV hitches like # 13703 and others shown on the linked page...

  • Which Trailer Hitches Fit a 2006 Dodge or Freightliner Sprinter without a Step Bumper
There are 5 versions of the 2006 Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter so to determine if there is a hitch that will fit we have to look at which specific model you have. If you have the 118 inch wheelbase, single rear wheel model you can use # 13250 or # 14250 If you have the 140 inch wheelbase, single rear wheel model you can use the same Curt hitches above as well as # 75210 If you have the 140 inch wheelbase, dual rear wheel model you can use # 13265 If you have the 158 inch wheelbase,...

  • Hitch and Wiring Fits for 2004 Dodge Sprinter
Both of our primary hitch suppliers, Curt and Draw-Tite, show no vehicle listing for a M-B branded Sprinter for model year 2004. Only a Dodge Sprinter is listed, both 2500-series and 3500-series. You can confirm the correct hitch based on the van's wheelbase and drivetrain. If you click on the "Select Vehicle Style" drop-down menu tool at the top of the linked page you can select your Sprinter's configuration; you will then see the hitches just for that setup. For example, for a 118-inch...

  • 2-Inch Hitch for 2004 Dodge Sprinter with 140-Inch Wheelbase for Use with Hitch Bike Rack
For use with a 2-inch hitch bike carrier I recommend the Curt Class III hitch # 13250 as it is a confirmed fit on your 2004 Dodge Sprinter with step bumper and 140-inch wheelbase. Class IV hitch # 14250 fits your van too but for use with a bike rack you will not need this hitch's 1000-lb tongue weight (TW) capacity, so the Curt # 13250, rated for 600-lbs TW, will be a great choice that actually costs you less. The linked photo shows you the appearance of the hitch and step bumper after...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2004 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 with Factory Step Bumper
Yes, we have the Draw Tite hitch part # 75210 as a confirmed fit for your 2004 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 that has the factory step bumper. Draw Tite states that on vehicles with factory step bumper, bumper mounting brackets will be re-attached at original position with fasteners provided with hitch.

  • Trailer Hitch for 2006 Dodge Sprinter That Fits Around Spare Tire
The spare tire retainer would almost certainly interfere with installing the # 75210, but we do have a hitch that is positioned a bit differently so it would fit perfectly. The Curt # 13250 class III hitch will avoid the spare tire retainer, as shown in the provided photo.
