Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Nissan Frontier - Curt

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Nissan Frontier, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt class 3 custom fit trailer hitch receiver, part number 13241. So here what our hitch looks like once we have it installed. Now the cross tube is barely gonna stick out below our bumper. But really, the main thing we're gonna see is that receiver tube sticking out. It is a class 3 hitch, which means it's gonna give us that 2" by 2" receiver tube opening and it's got that nice reinforced collar, giving it added strength and just an overall clean finished look. Now the way we're gonna mount any of our accessories is gonna be here on the side.

It's gonna be our hitch pin hole and it's gonna accept a standard 5/8 fitting clip. They're not included in the kit, but you can pick one up on our website, using part number PC3. Now as far as the safety chain connection points go, it's gonna be a rolled steel stock style, loop style, welded to the bottom of the receiver tube.As you can see, we're not gonna have too much trouble getting most size hooks on and off and it is just slightly offset from the hitch pin hole. So we shouldn't have too much trouble if we have a locking device in there. Our hitch is gonna feature a 500 pound tongue weight, along with a 5000 pound gross trailer weight.

It is designed to work with weight distribution system as well and that's gonna bump that tongue weight up to 800 pounds and it's gonna bump the gross trailer weight up to 8000 pounds. Now with all that in mind, I want to recommend that you always double check your vehicle's owner's manual and make sure that you don't exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight. I'd like to give you a few measurements that'll help when deciding for accessories for a new hitch, such as a ball mount, a bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper, it's gonna be right about 4 1/2". From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, that's gonna be about 18".Now that we've gone over some of the features and seen what our hitch looks like, let's go ahead and show you how to get it installed.

To begin our installation, we're gonna come to our back bumper. We're just gonna come right underneath and we're gonna find the three mounting holes that are in our frame. In each side, right behind our leaf spring, we're gonna have three weld nuts. Now we're gonna take one of the included bolts followed the conical tube washer. Now you want to make sure that those teeth on that washer are facing away from the bolt head or going towards the hitch.

Once we raise our hitch into place, we're gonna go through our hitch and spread the bolt into the frame like this. We're gonna have three mounting hole on the other side as well. So with an extra set of hands, we're gonna raise our hitch into position. We can loosely install our hardware. Just want to make sure you get at least one hand tight on each side so the hitch will support itself. Then we can work on getting the rest of our hardware in place.I'm gonna come back with a 19 millimeter socket and I'm gonna snug up all my hardware. Using that same 19 millimeter socket, I'm gonna back. I'm gonna torque all my hardware to the specified amount in the instructions. Then we'll repeat that for all the remaining hardware and that'll finish up our look at the Curt class 3 custom fit trailer hitch receiver, part number 13241 on our 2018 Nissan Frontier.

Order receiver, biggest piece of garbage! Bolts on my a$$!! The bolts holes are misaligned. Each off about 3/4 of an inch. Now I have to have it drilled out to fit. NEVER AGAIN WILL I ORDER YOUR CRAP! 538896

The mounting flanges on a trailer hitch are designed for straight line strength, not lateral strength. The flanges are actually designed to have some give in them, so occasionally they get bent out of place during shipping but they can be easily bent back into place. As long as the powder coat didnt crack and there arent any cracks in the mounting flange itself, the hitch will work just fine after being bent back into place. Ill link you to a help article that shows a few different methods of manipulating the hitch back into place, which should be done before using the hitch. Enlarging the holes on the mounting flanges isnt recommended, as it can weaken the hitch.

I was able to install the hitch single handed with the aid of a floorjack. Everything matched up and the installation was finished in about 30 minutes. Sweet! Now I can pull my trailer with worrying about damaging my bumper and get those projects done around the house and yard. Thanks for making this installation as smooth as possible with the tips from your website. Next time I need something for my truck or trailer, etrailer.com will be the first place I look! 343666

One side was bent in making it so I had to use a C-clamp and clamp the drivers side to the frame of the Nissan Frontier and draw it over into place. Once there, I had to also ream the last remaining bolt hole because the bracket was too far forward. I have read other people have had this problem and etrailer has claimed the metal can spring back during shipping. I have two things to say on this. One, metal does not randomly spring out of place. The bracket had to be either not tacked in 4 places before it was welded, which makes the welding process draw that side piece over, or the fit and cut was done improperly. Two, if they now this happens, then they should put a little slop in some of the holes , so we can work it around. Other than that, it is a hitch, what more can I say? 397887

The supplied mounting bolts do not thread to the frame of my 2009 Nissan Frontier. 567156

Comments

The hitch should have included 6 M12-1.25x35mm bolts. Its pretty rare that incorrect bolts are shipped out, what is much more likely is that road debris and corrosion have obstructed the threads in the nuts welded into the trucks frame. This is extremely common in vehicles used in areas that get winter weather. Usually, hitting those threads with spray lubricant and a wire brush like # DW00254
Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner - Wire Brush
$2.94
will clean the threads enough so you can get the bolts started. In extreme cases, a thread tap like # PTW8662
12 mm x 1.25 Tap and Drill Bit
$6.95
would be needed.

If you receive a hitch that is not bent(holes line up perfectly), you'll have a 5 star experience. Not in my case. Somewhere along the line both the mounting arms were bent inward.. about 1 inch on one side and 3/4" on the other. I did not see damage to the insides of box...probably a warehouse/handling issue. (etrailer should verify alignment before sending) I have a workbench and what I thought would be a solid enough vise to bend things back in alignment... nope. I only have a 4" vise with a swivel base and that is not going to work. (swivel would give/rotate whole vise) Turns out you'll need a beefy vise that does not swivel at the base(or quality vise that wont allow to swivel under "extreme" load) connected to a sturdy workbench...my setup was not up to the task. --if you have a decent setup(6" non swiveling base, solid bench) or have access to one you should be fine. In the end, after 3 weeks(i carried hitch in my suv in case I ran across something), I finally ran across a shipping container type box that had a 1/3" gap in between the cement and bottom of container.... slipped the bent arm in there, gave it some muscle and aligned it into place... once straight(verified with straight edge), it went on no issues. Some of the powder coat is scuffed/bare metal due to this manipulating so use soft jaws or towels/etc(durr) . Next hitch I get will probably be from a brick and mortar location so they can deal with any alignment issues for me. Dealing with etrailer as an online seller was great/straightforward and they price matched + %10 but I would rather pay a little more and just bolt it on w/o further hassle. 725186

It sounds like you knew what you were doing to get your flexed hitch straightened back out. Ive linked a help article with further tips on correcting a flexed hitch. You mentioned that there are some bare spots on the hitch from the concrete. Its a good idea to cover those bare metal spots with some rust-inhibiting black spray paint to help prevent the metal from rusting.

Fit very well and was easy to install. I have used my truck to pull my zero turn mower out of the mud, mower weights about 1200 pounds and used the hitch for a pulling point. Very stout even when not used as untended. Glad I bought this one! 663733

This hitch seems to be of pretty good quality. Installation on my 2011 Nissan Frontier went easy, except for one issue, 5 of the six conical washers were under sized. All six washers were physically the same size, but the center holes were too small to put the bolt through on 5 of them. This was a pretty easy thing to remedy with a drill bit, so I did not bother contacting either Curt or etrailer, though I am sure they would have taken care of me if I had called. 628358

I recommend part # 18144
Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat
$10.05
bracket for a 4-way flat. If you do not want to drill into the hitch you can use a no drill mount bracket part # 18140
No-Drill Mount for Electrical Mounting Bracket - Short
$12.95
for a short bracket and part # C57202
Curt No-Drill Bracket for 6-Way or 7-Way Round Trailer Connector Mounting Bracket - Long
$11.92
for a long bracket. You will attach part # 18144
Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat
$10.05
to the no drill bracket. The no drill bracket will then clamp around the hitch. For a 7-way option I recommend part # 18138
Mounting Bracket for 7-Way
$5.95
7 way plug bracket. You can also use the no drill bracket option with the 7-way bracket.

this hitch fit my 2009 Frontier perfectly. I had to run a tap through the mounting holes to get the bolts to go in but it's not the hitch's fault, just age of the truck. It appears to be well made, seems to be quite stout. And it really tucks up under the bumper nicely. It shipped quickly but it was just tossed in an empty cardboard box that had ripped and "repaired" by stapling on some more cardboard. The hitch was fine though. 480786

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Fit for 2009 Nissan Frontier
  • Trailer hitch receivers are designed to work with specific years, makes, and models of vehicles because they install to the frame, and those are different depending on the vehicle you have. That means a hitch for a 2006 Chevy Colorado would not be able to fit your 2009 Nissan Frontier, though we do have hitches that you can add. The hitches that fit 2009 Nissan Frontier are: - etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98869 - Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75282 - Curt...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Custom Fit Truck Bed Camper Tie-Downs for 2005 Nissan Frontier

The TorkLift rear tie-down you referenced will only fit your Frontier if you do not have a trailer hitch or you have a factory hitch because it occupies the same installation location as an aftermarket...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2013 Nissan Frontier Towing Tandem Axle Travel Trailer
  • Curt 2-inch hitch # 13241 is a confirmed fit for your 2013 Nissan Frontier and it is rated for use with weight distribution systems like those from Fastway and others. The key to selecting a weight distribution/sway control system for your tandem axle travel trailer is to measure its actual tongue weight (TW) when the trailer is fully-loaded in its road-ready condition, with water tank full and all supplies and gear loaded. To this measured actual TW you will add the weight of anything...

  • Hitch, Wiring and Brake Controller Installation in 2011 Nissan Frontier Without Factory Tow Package
  • I am glad to help you get your 2011 Frontier ready for towing with a hitch, wiring and brake controller. Instead of Curt hitch # 13241 I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75282 since it offers a higher tongue weight (TW) capacity (of 750-lbs versus 500-lbs for the Curt). Pricing is almost identical and so too is the no-drill installation which is shown in the linked video. Since you do NOT have the factory tow package for wiring and brake controller installation you will wire in the Prodigy...

I would not be able to speak to how far out the receiver sticks out. • How to Pick Out Correct Ball Mount for 2016 Nissan Frontier Towing Travel Trailer
  • I attached an FAQ that details how to pick out the correct ball mount. Picking out the correct ball mount will allow your trailer to sit as level as possible. Basically you will first measure the height from the ground to the top of the receiver opening on the hitch while on level ground. Next, you will measure the coupler height from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler when the trailer is on level ground. Next, you will need to compute the difference. If the hitch height...
