Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2011 Dodge Dakota - Curt

Today on our 2011 Dodge Dakota, we'll be installing and taking a look at the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, class three with a two inch opening, part number 13229. Here's what our Curt Trailer Hitch looks like installed on our Dodge Dakota. Very easy, three bolt installation, and it requires no drilling, using the assisting holes from the factory to install it. It's made from a nice sturdy steel construction, has nice black inaudible 00:00:23 finish that's going to resist rust and corrosion. This is a class three with a two inch by two inch opening and a five inch pinhole. You have easy access to your chain hold downs here when you hook up to your trailer for your safety chains, and this hitch is rated for 500 pounds of tongue weight and 5000 pounds of towing capability. You always want to double check your vehicle's capacity, and use whichever is lower between the vehicle and the hitch. I'll give you some measurements to help choosing some accessories for your new hitch.

From the center of the hitch pinhole to the nearest edge of the bumper is three inches, and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is eighteen and a half inches. That will help you choose accessories such as ball mounts, bike racks, or cargo carriers. Now we'll show you how the hitch is installed. To start our install, I'll point out the mounting locations. We'll be using the hole here in our bumper and these two brackets that are attached to the underneath of the bumper. In a lot of applications from the factory there is a rubber cover here that you'll pop off, but for this application it's already been removed. The next step is to raise our hitch into position and secure it loosely through our bumper with the one and three quarter inch flathead socket cap screw.

Here's our bolt. You can see there's an Allan head, feed that through the hole in our bumper. Raise our hitch up into place, line it up with the hole, and loosely secure it here in the top of the hitch. That's going to hold your hitch into position so we can secure the rest of the hardware. Next we'll take our half inch bolt and our flat washer that comes with our install kit, feed it through the bracket on the bumper and through our new hitch. On the back side it will get attached and secured with a flange nut.

That will be the same hardware here on this side also. We'll tighten it down and torque it as specified in the instructions. I'm going to first tighten the bolt here in the middle and then our two sidebolts. I'll be using a half inch Allan socket to tighten this down. Tighten the two half inch bolts using the three quarter inch socket and wrench. Now I'm going to torque our hardware as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch tightened and torqued, we're ready to hook up our trailer and hit the road.

That will do it for our installation and look at the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class three, with a two inch opening, part number 13229, on our 2011 Dodge Dakota. .

This is way better than paying $342.56 for the dealership to put one on for me when i bought my 2011 dakota 4X4. I timed myself when installing this hitch. just under 9 minutes looks great, works good too. Wou will not be displeased with this buy!!! 20527

This style of hitch was very easy to install, because it bolts right to the frame and to the rear bumper. And it is class III--hard to believe! That was why I bought it. This can be easily installed by the individual with a little common sense, except for one significant problem: the torque that is required for all of the bolts. I believe that although I torqued the center bumper bolt to about 260 foot pounds, and the frame bolts to about 185 foot pounds, the hitch will stay in place. The manufacturer calls for torques that are much higher. The average repair shop will not have a torque wrench that is adequate for the torque required by the manufacturer. I took mine to two different repair shops, and neither had a torque wrench that would go that high. Still I've used the hitch a few times, and it has performed well. 720171

45 mins after it arrived by ups hitch and wiring were installed. Real easy install. Not to awful happy about the goofy Allen head bolt that goes through the bumper but it works I guess . Not much of a surface to hold its torque but we'll see after some use. 654875

The fit and finish are great. The threads for the main attachment would not accept the threaded bolt. I had to take the receiver to a shop to get the threads cleaned up with a proper 3/4 x10 tap. Otherwise a perfect fit that meets my needs. I would have given 5 stars except for the thread issue. Smiles, SKF 617129

Easy install. My only complaint is the 1/2” hex bit socket is not easy to find and kind of expensive. Also it says it needs to be torqued which seems like a lot and my wrench only goes to 250 lbs. Overall I’m satisfied 572659

  • Installation of Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver Part # 13329 on 2005 to 2010 Dodge Dakota
The installation is pretty simple. One bolt passes through the bumper through the trailer ball hole plug located in the center of the bumper under the license plate area. The other two bolts attach the hitch to the bumper support. I will provide a link to the install instructions for your review.

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2000 Mercury Mountaineer
The Curt hitch part # 13229 is not going to fit a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer as it is designed to fit Dodge Dakotas. Instead you'd need a hitch that is confirmed as a fit for your vehicle like the Curt # 13540 which will bolt right up.

  • Availability of Class IV Hitch for 2008 Dodge Dakota
Most Class III hitches will have a Weight Carrying Capacity and a Weight Distribution Capacity. There is not a Class IV hitch available for the 2008 Dakota, but the Curt Class III receiver, part # 13230 has an 8000 lb capacity when used with a weight distribution system. The W/D system will use leverage provided by spring bars to transfer a portion of the trailer tongue weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle, thus allowing the hitch to bear more weight. Although the hitch is rated...

Our most popular trailer hitch for your 2011 Ram Dakota is the Curt Class III Receiver Hitch # 13229. This hitch offers a 2 inch hitch receiver with a 500 pound tongue weight capacity and 5,000 pound towing capacity. It is important to keep in mind that the vehicle's towing capacity should not be exceeded when choosing a trailer to tow. The # 13229 hitch is also compatible with weight distribution systems. It has a nice gloss black powder coat finish over a protective base coat for superior rust resistance. There is not a similar hitch to the Curt # 13229 available in style or in the number of bolts to install. It is not compatible with your model year. If you will be using this hitch receiver...

Remove existing hole plug (if present) on the center of bumper and return to vehicle owner. 2. Raise hitch into position by sliding the hitch chain plate behind the vehicle chain plate. • Trailer Hitch and Wiring to Tow a Rental Trailer with a 2007 Dodge Dakota
The Curt trailer hitch # 13229 is a great value for your 2007 Dodge Dakota and is more than capable of towing a rental trailer. The hitch is rated for 500 pounds tongue weight and 5,000 pounds gross trailer weight. Compare that to the truck's towing capacity (in the owner's manual) and go by whichever rating is lower; the hitch or the truck. Uhaul requires a hitch on the vehicle as well as a functional trailer wiring harness. You can add a 4-Way flat trailer connector using # 118323....

The Curt Trailer Hitch, item # 13229, is designed and tested for fit and capacity, likewise the Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider have their own towing capacity ratings for the vehicle and bumper. In your case the vehicle attachment point is rated for 2,000 pounds capacity so that will be the maximum rating for your vehicle with the bumper mounted option. You always have to go by the lowest rated item in the towing system for maximum capacity. If you need more capacity than the bumper...
