Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 BMW X5 - Curt

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 BMW X5, you're gonna be taking a look at and show you how to install the Curt Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number 13077.This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. You can see the cross tube is completely hidden behind the bumper fascia. The only thing we see is the receiver tube, and it's nice and tucked in behind the outermost edge of the bumper fascia. We're not going worry about hitting our legs or our shins on it when we're loading or unloading the vehicle. You can see it's going to have a reinforced collar, give you a little extra stability on the receiver tube. It's gonna be a Class 3 hitch and it's going to be 2" by 2".

Hitch pin hole is going to be 5/8" in diameter. You can see that the safety chain loops is a rolled steel style. It's welded on the bottom of the receiver tube. You can see the hole is nice and large. It's gonna accept many different size safety chain hooks. You're gonna have a 600 pound max tongue weight which is a downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube.

You're gonna have a 6,000 pound max trailer weight, which is a trailer plus load included. Now, you can use weight distribution with this hitch. Your weights are gonna stay the same. I do recommend checking the owner's manual to make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You're gonna want to pick the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. As far as the installation goes, it is a pretty straightforward installation.

Keep in mind you will have to remove the bumper fascia. Now, let me give you a few measurements to help you in deciding on any hitch-mount accessory you may need, such as a bike rack, ball mount, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the bumper will be about 4". From the ground to the top innermost part of the receiver tube will be about 14.5".Now, let's show you how to get this installed. First thing we need to do is we're gonna have two plastic rivets in our wheel well that we need to remove.

We're gonna do this on both sides. This is gonna be behind the tire and it's gonna be connection this panel to our rear fascia. Take a drill bit, we're gonna drill out the center. We're gonna slowly pull out on this trim piece. If for some reason this isn't pulling off, you pull back your wheel well liner. This is the bottom tab. You reach in right behind and you push down like this. It'll release that. You're gonna have another up a little bit higher. Take an 8mm socket, you're gonna remove this bolt. We're gonna repeat that same thing on the other side. Take your 8mm socket, you're gonna remove three bolts on each side of the vehicle underneath the fascia. Now we're gonna remove our reflectors. What we're gonna do is we're gonna reach up right above our tail pipe here. There's gonna be a clip. We're gonna push that clip and we'll push this corner out. You want to push in that side. Once you get those lose, just pull it out and set it aside. What I like to do before I remove my fascia is right here on this edge, just put a piece of tape. I use electrical tape just to keep this from scratching that edge right there. Even though this is plastic, as the bumper moves around and it bumps up against this, it could take a chance at chipping it there. I like to take a little extra precautionary action and cover it up like that. Go head and do that on both sides. Now we need to remove our tail lights. In order to do that, here on our driver's side we're gonna pull out this panel, we're gonna pull back our insulation. Actually we don't even need to do that. You see this plug right here Go ahead and unplug that. It's going to our tail light. Take an 8mm socket, you're gonna remove the two nuts that are holding the tail light in place. Now, it's a little bit hard just to pull it out. You reach in and grab the two bolts and the back of that wiring harness and just push on it a little bit. It'll pop out. Just like that. We'll set that aside. You're gonna repeat the process on the other side of the car.Take your 8mm socket. You're gonna remove this bolt on each side of the vehicle. Around the lower corner, or inside corner, of your bumper fascia underneath your tail light. Because our bumper fascia has a few plastic clips, they run along this center section, our tailgate, take a strap and we're gonna hang it just like that. That'll give us enough room that we can reach in there and do what we need to do to get those undone. Take your 8mm socket, you're gonna have a bolt here that was under your reflector. You're gonna have one on both sides. The next set of hands, we're gonna start moving our fascia. We're gonna start down here in the lower corner and work our way in toward the center. Keep in mind, if you have sensors, make sure you don't pull your fascia off. You need to unplug those first. Well start herein this corner. We're gonna pull out like that. You're gonna have some clips here at the top. If it doesn't come out, if you take a little screw driver and stick it down in there, it'll push those down enough to release it. Here's gonna be your sensor plug. You're just gonna push down on both ends. Just like that. Take an 18mm socket, we're gonna remove the four nuts holding our bumper beam in place. These nuts will not be reinstalled. I'm gonna leave on partially on just so my bumper beam doesn't fall off when I'm doing the other side. Before we remove our bumper beam, we're gonna have a wire that runs across. It's a sensor wire. We're gonna unplug it, go ahead an pull it out of the clips. We're actually just gonna lay it across here. We need to disconnect it here also. You can just take a trim panel tool, flathead screwdriver, anything to just get back in there and pop that off. Just like that.Once you've removed that wire, or set the wire aside, go ahead and take off the last nut holding the bumper beam in place and you can pull off the bumper. We'll set that aside. We'll take our hitch, put it into place. Just be mindful of the edge of the tailgate here, that you don't hit it. We're gonna put new hardware, conical tooth washer. You're gonna make sure that the teeth of the washer are facing toward the hitch, and then the nut. We'll take a 19mm socket and tighten them all into place. We want to torque all of our hardware to the specification of the instructions. Now, we need to reattach our plug. We're just gonna go up over the top like this, around the front of our hitch, and we're gonna reinstall it back on the clips and get it plugged in. Since we can't reconnect this, if you pull the wire, tighten that up so it doesn't fall back down on the exhaust, and then put it in your clips, it'll hold it. It'll hold it over in place like that. Now we can reinstall our fascia in reverse order from the way we took it off. What Curt has done, instead of putting new plastic rivets in it and requiring somebody to get a rivet gun if they don't have one, they're gonna give you little rivets like this that have a Phillips head screw in them. They are plastic so all you will need to do is once we get it in place, you're just gonna push the center in. All we're gonna do is push the center in just like that. Repeat that on the other side and you're ready to go.That'll do it for a look at an installation in the Curt Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number 13077 on our 2017 BMW X5.

This kit was great and functions exactly as intended. With the help of the online video it was easy to install, even for people without any electrical knowledge. My only advice is: 1) watch the video and the hitch installation video at the same time. This will help you plan ahead and not re-install parts during the hitch installation, that will need to be removed for the harness installation 2) be VERY careful about selecting the right wires, by using the testing tool eTrailer provides. In the install video for my BMW X5, the technician referenced a yellow and black wire when making the initial connection. He later goes on to make a separate connection for a black and yellow wire. To the novice they look nearly identical. I confused the two wires and had to re-do this, but would not have been an issue if I had understood the distinction and used the testing tool, as recommended in the instructions 3) be careful about placing all connectors so that they face in the same direction. Does not impact function, but makes for a neater install when complete. I could not be happier about how this project turned out, and credit etrailer with all of the success. It has a very OEM look, and etrailer made the entire project doable for me through their great suite of videos and excellent Customer service. I wish every retailer could be this good! 638186

The fit and finish is excellent. The directions could use a little tweaking, but made sense as I went along. If you are a mechanical amateur, probably have someone do this installation for you; if you have moderate mechanical skills, an excellent purchase. 403421

Excellent product. This will be my fifth installation on various X5's going back seven years. Nice heavy duty construction and perfect fit. I pull a 5000 lb boat and trailer with it. I will be purchasing the sixth for a friend next week. 369430

I have installed the receiver hitch but have not used it. So far, I would give it a 4 stars. I do have input about the directions from Curt: Under installation Requires, CURT omitted the need for a 19mm deep socket for the nuts the provided and they don’t mention the 18mm socket needs to be a deep socket If installing on a Msport version of the X5, you need to remove (3) of the plastic rivets from the wheel well to expose the 8mm fastener, not (2) If installing on a Msport version of the X5, access to the clip on the back side of the reflectors, that need to be removed, to expose the 8mm fasteners in very difficult to get to. Other suggestions on how to remove the reflectors is needed. The instructions should also include the following direction: If you are planning on installing a wiring harness, do so prior to installing the hitch. Curt should also provide direction and the suggested mounting hardware for 7-way/4-way trailer receptacle for the vehicle the specific hitch is made for. 594160

My dad and I installed this hitch within a few hours from arrival of the hitch. The u-tube video was extremely helpful (even though I found a few small details to be different on my particular x5). Even though I'm not mechanically inclined, I think I could have done this on my own with the help of the video and the right tools which my dad owned (I don't!). Definitely recommend! Installing myself saved several hundred dollars at least, maybe up to $400. 372400

A very robust and well built hitch, easy to install and for the most part straight forward. My only issue was the box was completely destroyed upon delivery (hitch was hanging out and hardware exposed) and I feared the $180 harness I purchased along with it were long gone along with the hardware to install it. Lucky it was all in the box but I am sure it had fallen out several times in route as the box was about 40% missing. 487378

I have installed three of these with out issue. Fit and function are excellent. Two units are on X5's with the M trim package. The only negative I can say is the hitch in the receiver will rattle if left in place. I have pulled my 5000 lb. boat (equipped with surge brakes) with out any trouble. 495423

I purchased the Curt Hitch for my 2010 BMW X5 35d from etrailers. The shipment was received promptly and without any hassle. The installation was strait forward and accomplished in 2 hours working alone. I found the YouTube videos as the best reference to the installation. I also purchased the Tekonsha ZCI wiring kit to finish off the install. This is a great kit that uses sensors that clamp onto the wires eliminating splicing altogether and a control module to operate the trailer lights. It is truly an amazing kit. It took me another hour to add the harness and once again, I used You Tube to prep for the job. Both purchases combined had everything included to add a the hitch receiver to my Bimmer without any trips to the store for parts. Five stars on both products... 267516

This contraption took My about 180 minutes to install. Was able to complete job with no extra parts or questions. Instructions were vague because it tried to cover all makes and production years of X5's. One improvement would be to supply 6 plastic body rivets instead of 4 as the instructions say to drill out six and to get the option of getting a color to match the trim. We were supplied Black for a white Beemer. 80% of the whole installation is dealing with the bumper facade. 428491

I installed this hitch on my 2015 BMW X5 xdrive35i. I watched the video and it went as planned. The re install of the bumper may not have been as easy as they showed but then I am not a car body mechanic. I did not have to trim the bumper to go over the receiver. I installed the wiring kit in the passenger side where a large unused grommet was available to run the flat 4 connector through. The connector stores in the receiver back end when not in use. 608215

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2015 BMW X5
  • We have two options for trailer hitches for a 2015 BMW X5 that will fit all their motor and package options. The options are the Curt Class III 2 inch, # 13077, and the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2 inch, # 75600. Both trailer hitches will require fascia trimming, but will not require any drilling into your frame. Both hitches are very good quality and will hold up very well. I recommend the Draw-Tite option based on the look and the fact that it does not...

  • Recommended Trailer Towing Setup for 2018 BMW X5
  • The hitch I recommend for your 2018 BMW X5 is the USA-made Curt Class III model # 13077. I like this hitch because it offers the highest available weight rating of 600-lbs tongue weight and 6000-lbs towing weight. A small ultra-light teardrop trailer will be well within the X5's maximum towing capacity of 5952-lbs. I linked both the written instructions and an install video to show you the process. All required hitch hardware is included. For a 4-pole flat type wiring harness to power...

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13077, which is also confirmed to fit this vehicle, will not allow the bumper portion to be re-installed. On the # RHK product page you will need to enter the model number of your hitch - either 75600 or 13077 - in the box marked "Hitch Item Number" and then in the "Manufacturer"...

  • Does the Curt Hitch part # 13077 Hang Below the Rear Fascia of a BMW X5
  • There will be a small amount of fascia trimming required to install the Curt Trailer Hitch part # 13077 on your 2007 BMW X5, but the hitch opening will hang below the fascia. Check out the picture I attached that shows hitch installed on a similar vehicle as yours. I also attached installation instructions for this hitch for you to check out. For trailer wiring I would recommend the Curt PWM Powered Converter with Wiring Kit # C59236. I attached instructions and an install video for...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2007 BMW X5
  • For your BMW X5 I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch, part # 75600. This is a Class lll trailer hitch and it has a 2-inch receiver opening. I think the Draw-Tite Hitch is better constructed than the Curt hitch, part # 13077, and the Draw-Tite does not require a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 as the Curt hitch does for all non-trailer loads. It can be difficult to find a place to attach a strap on a vehicle. If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested...

  • Comparing the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75600 and the Curt Trailer Hitch # 13077 for a 2015 BMW X5
  • Although the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 75600, and the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13077, are both great hitches that both have a 6,000 lb max Gross Trailer Weight and a 600 lb max Tongue Weight, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 75600. The reason that I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75600 over the Curt # 13077 is because the Curt hitch requires that you use a stabilization strap, like part # 18050, for any non-trailer loads like bike racks and cargo carriers per the Curt warranty....

  • Trailer Hitch, Wiring & Brake Controller for 2012 BMW X5
  • Both of the 2-inch Class III hitches we have for your 2012 BMW X5, Draw-Tite # 75600 and Curt # 13077, are fairly involved installations as hitches go. The linked video illustrates the installation of the Draw-Tite hitch on a 2012 X5. This hitch is rated for a maximum towing capacity of 6000-lbs but you will want to check your BMW owner's manual to confirm the towing capacity for your particular X5d as equipped from the factory. Engine and transmission options can affect a vehicle's towing...

  • Getting Trailer Running Lights to Work on a 2005 BMW X5 Trailer Wiring Harness
  • Getting the running lights to work would require attaching the correct wire on the trailer wiring harness you are using to the correct wire on the 2005 BMW X5. It will be very similar to the video I have linked showing a typical installation of wiring harness # 119190KIT. You will need to either use the included circuit tester with the wiring harness or # ALL640595 if you need one. Then test the tail light wiring to find the correct wire for the running light circuit. If you do have...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 BMW X5 That Requires Minimal Trimming
  • There are three trailer hitches available for your 2011 BMW X5. The only installation differences that you will run into will be with the Curt hitch. Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch are sister companies and their hitches are identical. We have not had the chance to install the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, # 13077, on a 2011 BMW X5 yet, but based on the design of the hitch, I would assume the Curt hitch would require the least amount of trimming. The Curt hitch only has a 2-1/2 inch wide...

  • Is Fascia Trimming Required to Install Trailer Hitch on 2010 BMW X5
  • Both the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame # 75600 and the Curt Class III # 13077 Trailer Hitches that are custom-fit for your 2010 BMW X5 will require some fascia trimming during installation to allow for the receiver to fit properly. Between the two models, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch because it will be a bit more hidden and unlike the Curt hitch, it does not require the use of stabilizing straps for non-trailer accessories such as bike racks and cargo carriers. I...

  • Is There Fascia Trimming Required to Install Curt Hitch part # 13077
  • I checked with Curt and for the 2016 BMW X5 they still recommend fascia trimming to install the Curt Hitch part # 13077. Because of the cut out area in the fascia that is there currently it may not be as severe though.

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2015 BMW X5 M-Model
  • I contacted my technical associates at Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch and Curt to find out why the M Model version of the X5 is listed as a no-fit for a hitch. This particular install is fairly involved - the bumper must be temporarily removed, tow hooks must be permanently removed and there is significant ("noticeable") trimming of the rear fascia required. For these reasons some hitch makers made the determination that the vehicle simply requires too much modification to install a hitch without...

  • Tongue Weight and Gross Trailer Weight Ratings for Class III Hitches for 2007 BMW X5
  • Draw-Tite Class III hitch # 75600 carries the same 600-lb tongue weight (TW) and 6000-lb gross trailer weight (GTW) ratings whether or not it is used with a weight distribution hitch. Curt hitch # 13077, another of the Class III hitches offered for your 2007 BMW X5, is not suitable for use with weight distribution systems. These hitches are designed for use with 2-inch Class III accessories. If you intend to tow within the vehicle's rated capacity you will need a wiring harness #...
