Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today were working on a 2002 Jeep grand Cherokee. Were going to install Curt hitch part number 13051. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch such as a draw bar, bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most point of the bumper, is 6 and inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 15 and inches. Now, lets go ahead with the installation. We have a total of 6 fastening points, 3 on each side.

Our first step is to remove the manufacturers fasteners. Now we go over to the passenger side and remove the same 2 forward fasteners. Our inner most fastener on the passenger side, you will notice it does not have the bracket support, it does however have the well nut and the frame but over time that well nut is going to build up with dirt, dust and debris, so youre going to want to clean it out before you try and install your hitch. Im going to use some spray lubricant and a half inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. I even recommend to go and take one of your new fasteners and thread it into the hole before you try and install your hitch.

On the passenger side, well need to insert a block to make up for the space that the bracket takes up on the drivers side. To make it easier on installation, Im going to take some electrical tape and tape it to the hitch in place. Now, we wont have to fight it once we get our hitch up into position. Its a good time to get an extra set of hands to put in place. Using our 12mm bolts and our conical tooth washer with the teeth of our washer facing the hitch, with all of our fasteners installed, we can go ahead and tighten it down.

With all of our fasteners tightened down, we can go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all our fasteners torqued to specifications, that completes the installation of our Curt hitch part number 13051 on a 2002 jeep grand Cherokee.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I drive a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and ordered this product to install on it. The product itself looks and works great. Unfortunately, installing the product was well over a 40 minute install time. The problem was that the mounting brackets did not align with the bolt holes. After discussing with the issue with etrailer, I was told the bracket could flex or be bent out of place during shipping and they need to be bent back into the right position. The company does have a guide on different ways to perform this if you need to. After a few attempts of bending and adjusting alignment with one side attached, I managed to get the brackets to align with the bolt holes. This resulted is an installation time of a few hours at least. If the product came with the brackets correctly aligned this would have been a quick 40 minute installation but that was simply not the case. Once the hitch was on the Jeep, it looks great and was good to go. 547847

Great hitch for my 2002 WJ. Easy bolt-on installation to existing frame holes. I haven't towed any trailers (and don't plan to), but it has been useful for recovering other vehicles off-road. 585163

Very easy to install. It only took about 20-25 minutes. And that was with me having difficulty trying to thread the rear most bolts in because the threads within the frame were rusted so it was hard to hand tighten it so I sent it and impacted those mofo’s in. Very good design and I’m glad I went with this trailer hitch receiver. 736150

I purchased a year ago and I am very happy with the product. No issues in with weather as I have used it in minus 40 degrees fahrenheit and 90 degrees fahrenheit. No rust has accumulated yet. Seems pretty sturdy, I have pulled a fully loaded 16 foot Lund fish and ski with it and a snowmobile trailer with 2 snowmobiles. No issues so far. I am very pleased with the product and Etrailer. Good work! 619451

The hitch has worked very well, installation was not too hard I was able to do all myself. The only problem encountered, was trying to hook up the trailer electrical for the trailer. I used a four wire harness, but still can't get the stop light to work, I understand that part is not your problem. The hitch works great. Thanks 610705

Comments
The fix for your issue will depend on the wiring harness youre using. You wont be able to wire a 4 pin connector directly into the vehicle. A taillight converter is needed like part # 118369

. It might also be possible that theres a blown fuse.

Fits as expected, even over the Gas tank Skid plate. Fits under the Bumper, so no body mods are needed. You could mount it your self, but the odds are you will break off one or more of the retaining bolts and have to drill the holes out. The Body shop where I had it mounted did, But got everything straight. This mount does not come with a trailer connection, but one can be installed no problem. 579098

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch # 13051 Fit a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
The Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13051, will fit the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. The only tech tip note I have is that the tow hooks, if present, will need to be removed for hitch installation. I have included a link to the installation instructions for reference. A front mount trailer hitch should not be used to flat tow the vehicle behind an RV. As you have stated, the hitch is not designed for this purpose. Instead, you would need to install base plates and use a tow bar to flat tow...

  • Installing an Aftermarket Hitch on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee for Jeep Recall
Jeep issued a recall on certain models of the Grand Cherokee and Liberty due to the issue of an exposed gas tank. Basically, the gas tank is exposed at the rear of the Jeep with very little protection and there have been reports of the gas tank exploding during rear end collisions. Jeep (Chrysler) are recommending a trailer hitch be installed to protect the gas tank in a rear end collision or rear end impact. From what we understand, the OEM hitch is bigger and bulkier than the aftermarket...

  • Will Curt Hitch 13051 Fit a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Clear Bumper and Wheel Wells
I attached a picture that shows the Curt hitch part # 13051 installed and you can see that it fits below the bumper without any interference and also fits between the wheel wells easily. The only thing worth mentioning is that the tow hooks would need to be removed. I also attached an install video for you to check out as well on a very similar 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

  • Trailer Hitch and 7-Way Wiring Connector Installation on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The hitch that you referenced the Curt # 13051, is indeed a class III hitch that is confirmed as a fit for your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have included a video of this installation for your reference. Since your Cherokee does not have any existing wiring harness you are again correct that there are several plug in applications that will establish a 4-way trailer wiring harness for your vehicle. To install a fully functional 7-way connector for your Jeep you will have to start by establishing...

Yes, Curt trailer hitch # 13051 mounts below the rear bumper fascia on your 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have linked a video showing an example installation of this hitch for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball mount kit...

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Does the Jeep already have a hitch? If not, I recommend the Curt, part # 13051, that fits the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I prefer the Curt hitches because they seem to have a thicker powder coat finish than the others. If you need wiring I'd go with a Tekonsha harness. They're our go-to because of the reliability. Part # 118369 is the correct one for you. Once you have the hitch you need to measure to determine which ball mount you need. I've linked an article to help you make the measurements...

Both 2 inch and 1-1/4 inch hitches are available for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I would recommend going with a hitch with the 2 inch opening. This would give you the most common hitch size, so you would have more choices available when it comes to hitch accessories. The CURT 2 Inch Hitch # 13051 would be a good choice for your vehicle. Chrysler's solution to increasing the protection of the fuel tank on the Jeep Grand Cherokee was to install a trailer hitch. I have included a link to all of the hitch receivers available for your 2001. My personal recommendation is to go with a Class III hitch like the Curt, # 13051.
