Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Curt

Today on our 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part number 13051. This receiver that we'll be installing today is a Class III rated receiver with a 2" opening on the receiver tube. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is approximately 7". From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 16-1/2". Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. First let's go ahead and point out our mounting locations that we're going to be using to install our hitch.

There'll be a total of six mounting locations, three on each side. We're going to begin over here on the driver side. We'll be using this location right here, here, as well as right here. You will notice that over here there is a support bracket that is on this rear mounting location. Let's go ahead and move over to the passenger side and point out our mounting locations.

We'll be using this location here, here and this existing weld nut back here. For the five mounting locations that already have a manufacturer's bolt installed in them, we'll just be using a hex bolt, and a conical tooth washer in each of the locations, making sure that the teeth face toward the hitch when installed. Over here on the passenger side, since we don't have a support bracket here at the rear most mounting location we will need to add this round hole spacer block in between the hitch and the vehicle's frame. Since the other five mounting locations already had a bolt in them the threads will usually be clean enough and you won't need to do this, except for this rear mounting location that didn't have any hardware already installed in it. You're going to want to go ahead and take a little bit of spray lubricant and a nylon tube brush to clean it out. The tube brush that we're using today is part number 814092. Once you have everything cleaned up it's a good idea to go ahead and take one of the bolts and thread it in to make sure that it goes in easily.

If it does not you'll need to continue to clean the threads. Now we can go ahead and remove the hardware in the other five mounting locations. To do that we'll use an 18mm socket. You may notice that we're using a swivel end here on the end of our impact gun, that's really just to speed things up. You don't necessarily need this, but this back location here is kind of difficult to get into with this lower fascia. For video purposes we're going to use the swivel because it'll speed it up.

You can get in there with either a wrench or a socket. It'll just take you a little more time because you can't move the wrench or socket very far due to the limitation of items on both sides. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. You will need to slide the hitch up and around the lower part of the rear fascia here. Once you have the hitch slid up into position we can go ahead and loosely install all of the hardware. Making sure we install the round hole spacer block at the rear most mounting location on the passenger side, in between the hitch and the vehicle's frame. Once we have all the hardware installed we can go ahead and come back and tighten it all down and then torque it to the manufacturer's specification. With that, that'll do it for the installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part number 13051 as installed here on our 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .

Great hitch for my 2002 WJ. Easy bolt-on installation to existing frame holes. I haven't towed any trailers (and don't plan to), but it has been useful for recovering other vehicles off-road. 585163

I drive a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and ordered this product to install on it. The product itself looks and works great. Unfortunately, installing the product was well over a 40 minute install time. The problem was that the mounting brackets did not align with the bolt holes. After discussing with the issue with etrailer, I was told the bracket could flex or be bent out of place during shipping and they need to be bent back into the right position. The company does have a guide on different ways to perform this if you need to. After a few attempts of bending and adjusting alignment with one side attached, I managed to get the brackets to align with the bolt holes. This resulted is an installation time of a few hours at least. If the product came with the brackets correctly aligned this would have been a quick 40 minute installation but that was simply not the case. Once the hitch was on the Jeep, it looks great and was good to go. 547847

Hitch receiver is a solid well built part. Vertical mounts were a bit of a tight fit - had to use a pry bar to spread while starting bolts. My Jeep, on the other hand, threw a wrench into the otherwise easy installation. One of the six weld nuts was NOT metric (receiver comes with all the METRIC hardware needed to mount). Right rear-most weld nut was 5/16". This was NOT the fault of etrailer or Curt - purely a "Jeep thing". The light kit, too, was a snap once I disassembled all the interior panels in order to get to the plug for the kit. All in all, this was easier than I thought it would be. All said and done - maybe 1.5 hours not including the time finding a Grade 8 5/16" x 1.25" bolt. I'll never pay for somebody to install a receiver again. 83489

GREAT website and EASY to navigate to the right part needed! Cheaper prices than I could find on E-Bay too! LOVE THIS COMPANY!! I recently decided to get a new hitch for my 2001 Grand Jeep Cherokee so I started searching on E-bay and found one for a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and ordered it. (FROM ANOTHER COMPANY) Notice I said it was for a Jeep Cherokee. I didn't know that a Grand Jeep Cherokee and a Jeep Cherokee are two different style vehicles so I ended up with the wrong hitch. The order process was confusing. Once that part came in I realized it did not fit and while the company offered me a full refund IF I paid to ship it back I decided to try to sell it on Craigslist as shipping for something that heavy would be a lot! That's when I decided to try to find somewhere else to buy the hitch from and found Etrailer.com. As I said, VERY easy to pick the correct part for the right vehicle, GREAT prices, and quick service! Very happy customer! 334293

I probably would have rated this 5 stars if the trailer hitch I have on my Jeep now was the first I received. The first one was not manufactured correctly (we realized two hours into a 45 minute install). The customer service representative put me through unnecessary hoops (measure it, email photos etc) until after about three days she told me I had to contact the manufacturer directly. Which I did. Unfortunately for me the replacement hitch was 'lost' en-route at the Atlanta sorting facility. Now this is almost 4 weeks after the initial order. I called the manufacturer and was almost immediately in a 3 way call with USPS trying to track the missing shipment. Meanwhile I had emailed my concerns about the lack of customer service I had received from etrailer and was receiving calls and emails with offers of overnight hitch replacement. Apparently the original customer service representative was no longer there. I was offered apologies and was informed my concerns should NEVER have been handled the way they were . I went from bad hitch to no hitch to many hitch offers. In the end we successfully installed the hitch and I got to pull my camper. On second thought I'm changing it to 5 stars. Both Curt and etrailer showed out when they needed to! 256122

I purchased a year ago and I am very happy with the product. No issues in with weather as I have used it in minus 40 degrees fahrenheit and 90 degrees fahrenheit. No rust has accumulated yet. Seems pretty sturdy, I have pulled a fully loaded 16 foot Lund fish and ski with it and a snowmobile trailer with 2 snowmobiles. No issues so far. I am very pleased with the product and Etrailer. Good work! 619451

The hitch has worked very well, installation was not too hard I was able to do all myself. The only problem encountered, was trying to hook up the trailer electrical for the trailer. I used a four wire harness, but still can't get the stop light to work, I understand that part is not your problem. The hitch works great. Thanks 610705

Comments

The fix for your issue will depend on the wiring harness youre using. You wont be able to wire a 4 pin connector directly into the vehicle. A taillight converter is needed like part # 118369
T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector
$28.86
. It might also be possible that theres a blown fuse.

Fits as expected, even over the Gas tank Skid plate. Fits under the Bumper, so no body mods are needed. You could mount it your self, but the odds are you will break off one or more of the retaining bolts and have to drill the holes out. The Body shop where I had it mounted did, But got everything straight. This mount does not come with a trailer connection, but one can be installed no problem. 579098

Fantastic receiver! Received in the mail yesterday and I was more impressed with it in person than by the pictures on the website. Extremely well crafted and the gloss paint finish was flawless. Installation of the receiver itself was extremely simple as the directions are crystal clear and simple. I installed it in 23 minutes - once I broke the torque on the factory bolts (a few applications of liquid wrench and impact wrenching finally worked.) I installed in my driveway, but others may prefer a lift for extra headspace and wiggle room. Highly HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RECEIVER OVER MOPAR FACTORY INSTALLED RECEIVER! This will tow my Coleman pop up trailer! 518252

The mounting flanges on a trailer hitch are designed for straight line strength, not lateral strength. The flanges are actually designed to have some give in them, so that if they get flexed during shipping, they can be easily bent back into place. As long as the powder coat didnt crack and there arent any cracks in the mounting flange itself, the hitch will work just fine after being bent back into place. Ill link you to a help article that shows a few different methods of manipulating the hitch back into place, which should be done before using the hitch.

Its been well over a year since I got my trailer hitch. I have used the heck out of it and every time I use it I am very happy with it. I have used it for small loads and big loads, anyone considering this hitch should not hesitate to buy it.I have found that it connected very well to my vehicle and it is solid as a rock. The best thing about it is the piece of mind I have when pulling a load.

Purchased the Curt trailer hitch for my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, should have been an easy 30 minute install. Unfortunately the hitch side frame brackets would not clear the rolled edge of the metal gas tank skid plate. These need to be cut or ground down in order for the hitch to clear and position in place. Did not want to cut in place because of the gas tank close proximity so now I need to drop out both the gas tank and skid plate in order to modify for clearance, Had I known ahead of time I would have purchased another brand 398468

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch # 13051 Fit a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

  • There are two options for carrying bikes on the rear of your 2003 Grand Cherokee, a trunk mount and a hitch mounted option. The trunk mount would attach to the liftgate of the vehicle. Of the various trunk mounted options that are available for your Grand Cherokee (see link), I would recommend the Thule Raceway, part # TH9001PRO. While most trunk mounted bike racks use 6 straps that need to be adjusted each time the rack is installed or removed, the Raceway uses 4 ratcheting cables...

  • Increasing Fuel Tank Protection on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Chrysler's solution to increasing the protection of the fuel tank on the Jeep Grand Cherokee was to install a trailer hitch. I have included a link to all of the hitch receivers available for your 2001. My personal recommendation is to go with a Class III hitch like the Curt, # 13051. A Class III hitch not only gives you the added towing capacity but by having the 2" opening you increase your options when it comes to hitch mounted accessories.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Other Parts to Tow a Trailer with a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • I'm not sure which hitch receiver you're asking about but there are three that fit your 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have a Curt Class III, part # 13051, and two from Draw-Tite, part # 75139 for a Class III or part # 36276 for a Class II. I definitely recommend using a Class III unless there's some reason you specifially want the smaller Class II. I prefer the Curt specifically just because of the looks. The crossmember is visible on all of them. I've linked videos of both Class...

  • Installation of Curt Trailer Hitch # 13051 on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13051 will not require removing any parts of your OEM crossbar or frame. It will simply have you remove some hardware for the tank shield and then clean out a weldnut that will be utilized. The tank shield will remain in place. You may need to use some spray lubricant like # L10444 and a brush like # 814092 to clean the weld nut to ensure proper fit prior to installing your hitch.

  • Can Hitch Be Altered to Fit 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • According to Reese, their obsolete # 37042 multi-fit hitch wasn't a fit for the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. They do not under any circumstances recommend modifying or altering the hitch to fit because doing so would have an unforeseen effect on its weight bearing capacity. Using a hitch with an unknown capacity could lead to a dangerous situation. I'd highly recommend going with a hitch that's custom designed for your Grand Cherokee like the Curt Class III hitch, part # 13051. If you...

  • Trailer Wiring Mounting Box for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Curt Trailer Hitch 13051
  • If your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a 4-way flat trailer connector then for a mounting brackets there are a few options. You could start with # 18144 to hold the 4-Way and then attach it to either short bracket # 18140 or long bracket # 18136 which attaches to the hitch. For an actual box you could use # RP74641. If you need to mount a 7-Way I recommend bracket # PK12711U again with short bracket # 18140 or long bracket # C57202. For more of a box we have # 18159. If you need to...

  • Bumper Clearance For Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier On 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • The Curt Hitch, part # 13051, is a fit for your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have attached a video that shows the hitch installed on a 2004 Grand Cherokee. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper is 6 inches. You may want to check out the Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR. It measures 13-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the upright bar of the carrier. I have attached an installation video of this carrier on a 2011 Grand Cherokee...
