Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Class 4 Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening. Its part number is 41942. This is what our hitch is going to look like installed. You can see, mainly hidden cross tube here. You'll be able to see a little bit of it here and there, but it's the back of a truck, it's supposed to have a hitch on it, it's supposed to look nice and beefy.

As you can see we've got our safety chain connection points that are going to come up here. Nice and flat and easy to get to, but you'll see, they're not the largest that you've ever seen. There's a pretty good space between the front edge of that plate and where that opens, so you'll need a pretty wide-throated safety chain connection point. I guess if you we're using smaller ones you could use this point up here, that basically acts as just an access point to be able to get to your installation bolts though. See our receiver tube opening here, it's 2 inches by 2 inches. Really nice, sturdy reinforcement collar, this is going to go all the way around the end of it there.

It's going to give a superior durability. That's what these hitches are made for. This is a Class 4 hitch, it's rated way up there in towing and gross trailer weight ratings. This is going to do the job. We're not going to have to worry about this getting beat up too much or kind of expanding open or anything like that.

We've got a 5/8 diameter hitch pinhole here on the side, it's what we're going to use to secure all of our items with. You won't want to use that smaller hitch pinhole. For the large one, looks like plenty of room there on each side for whatever class, 3, 4 or 5 rated accessory that you would want to use. Just make sure that the weights line up with what you're hauling. So, if you've got a 10,000 pound trailer, make sure you're using a hitch pin that's rated for 10,000 pounds, or above of course. The thing I like about the 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening, is that, we're going to be able to use cargo carriers and bike racks and things like that that are rated for a Class 3.

They're going to fit in there, we'll be able to get them attached. It's not going to limit us to just those heavy duty hauling applications or sometimes, if you got that 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 inch receiver tube opening, you have to put that spacer in there, and it can really be a pain sometimes to get the holes to line up. The smaller pinhole, that's a little bit closer to the rear here, that's for use only with the j-pin stabilization system. Now when it comes to weight ratings, the hitch is going to offer us a 1,500 pound tongue weight ratings. That's the maximum downward force we can put here at the receiver tube opening. It gives us 15,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. That'll be the total weight of our trailer and then anything that we we're to load up on it. We go into a weight distribution set up, the tongue weight rating's going to go up to 1,600 pounds. The gross trailer weight rating, it goes up to 16,000 pounds. However, you want to check the owners manual in the Silverado, see what it's tow ratings are, then you'll go off of whichever of those numbers are the lowest. A couple measurements that are going to helpful when it comes to selecting your ball mounts, bike racks, or hitch cargo carriers, will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening, we've got about 20 1/4 inches. Then from the center of the hitch pinhole, to the outer most edge of our bumper, it's about 1 1/2. To begin our installation we've got an m-14 bolt right here in the very back of the frame rail that we need to remove. Use a 21 millimeter socket. You may also have an old hitch in place, maybe your old Class 3 hitch is here or something. In that case, you'll remove the other hardware attaching it as well. All right, let's set those aside. Now we're ready to get our hitch raised up into position. We're going to secure it with the rear most hole there in the bumper where we just took that bolt out of. Going to use our m-14 bolt, and a conical tooth washer. Just want to make sure that we have the teeth of that washer facing up towards the hitch. Once we get 3 or 4 good turns on it there, just let it rest there. We'll get the rest of our hardware in place. We're going to do the same style hardware here for our rear attachment points. We'll be using an m-14 and conical tooth washer to the forward attachment points, but we're also going to be incorporating a hex nut, and a flat washer. What we're going to do with these, is bring it down through the opening, through the existing hole, and that's going to go right through the hole in the side plate. Then our conical tooth washer will go on. Then we'll place on that hex nut. This is specific to a long bed application. If you have a short bed application, you're going to need to use the side plates that come with it, and you'll have to use these holes to get it in position. On a short bed, look on your instructions, make sure you get that straight. Now we'll use our 22 millimeter here. We want to go through and start snugging down all of our fasteners. The one in the front, probably going to have to use a socket to poke in on there on the top side. Now for the rearmost locations, you'll have to thread them in most of the way by hand here. You could use a wrench if you wanted to. You want to get enough room so you can slide your socket underneath it, then you can bring your extension right up through there. Now it's time to grab our torque wrench, we want to go around and torque all of our hardware down to the appropriate specifications. All right, if you removed your spare tire, now would be the time to get that put back into position. With everything torqued down properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Class 4 Trailer Hitch Receiver with the 2 inch by 2 inch opening.
