Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ram 3500

Speaker 1: Today, on our 2018 Ram 3500 Cab and Chassis, you're going to be taking a look at I'm going to show you how to install the Curt Class V XD trailer hitch receiver, part number C15400. This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. This is going to be an extra-duty hitch. It's going to be designed for heavier duty trucks like this Ram 3500 we have it on here today. It's going to have a nice black powder coat finish, so it's going to resist any rust or corrosion. It's going to be a class V hitch.

It's going to be 2-inch by 2-inch. Hitch pin hole is going to be 5/8-inch in diameter. It's going to have plate style safety chain rings, gives you plenty of room for different size safety chain hooks. It is going to have a reinforced collar, gives you a little extra stability on your receiver tube. Now, as far as weight capacity goes, you're going to have a 2,550-pound max tongue weight, which is the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. You're going to have a 17,000-pound max trailer weight, which is the trailer plus the load included.

Now, I do recommend checking the owner's manual of your Ram. Make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You're going to want to pick the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. Now, you can use weight distribution with this hitch. Your weight numbers are going to stay the same.

Now, as far as the installation goes, it is a very simple installation. You do have to drill the three holes on each side of your frame rail to get it installed. Once you have those three holes drilled, it goes right into place. It is a very heavy hitch. I do recommend having a couple of people help you get it into place. Now, let's give you a few measurements to help you when deciding on any hitch mount accessories you may need such as a bike rack, ball mount, cargo carrier.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper, will be about 8-inches. From the ground to the top innermost part of the receiver tube, will be about 20 1/4-inches. Now let's show you how to get this installed. First thing we needed to do is right here on the back of the frame, we got to remove the rivet, so because we have this bumper on, normally we can just grind off the top and it'll fall out the bottom. Because we have the bumper, we're not going to take it off, we're actually going to drill it out. We're going to use three drill bits. We're going to use a 1/4-inch drill bit first. We'll go up to 5/8 and then finish off with a 9/16, and then we should be able to get that rivet out. If you have a jack stand like this, it makes it easier. It will save your arms and shoulders. We're going to step up to the next size, which is going to be our 5/8. Our end goal is to remove this inaudible 00:02:46 top side because we want our hitch to sit flat against our frame. Once you're done drilling it, this is going to be the bottom side, which is on the bottom of your frame rail here. This is what you got to remove from the top side. Once you have that rivet removed, you're going to want to do the same thing on the other side. Next on our driver's side, you're going to have a wire loom clamp that's coming through right here. This is where our hitch is going to sit, so you can use a flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool, whatever you have. Get up there and pull that out. Next thing you want to do is if you don't have an extra person, it's probably going to be a little bit easier if you have a couple of jack stands like this. If you have it on the ground, regular jack stands will work. What I'd suggest is getting it lined up where this hole you just drilled out the rivet, line it up with this back edge hole here. Then we're going to take a spacer block, carriage bolt. We're going to go in from the top of the frame. We'll put our flange nut on the bottom. That's going to give us a template to drill our next two holes on each side. I'm going to use a 22-millimeter socket. I'm going to go ahead and tighten these into place. I'm not going to torque them just yet. There's two ways you can do this. How I'm doing it, where I bolted it up there, use a couple of longer drill bits to drill these back here, or you can take it back off once you have your holes marked. I'm going to start with my 9/16. That's going to give me . it's going to kind of center punch the hole. Now I'm going to go down to my 1/4-inch drill bit. Drill that hole first, which is basically a pilot hole. Go ahead and repeat that for the three remaining holes. Now we're going to come back and finish out our holes with a 9/16 drill bit.Once you have your other four holes marked, you can go ahead and take your hitch down. That makes it easier, which is what we're going to do to. Take it down, drill out those holes. We're going to repeat that same thing for the holes on the other side. Now what you want to do is take some clear coat or some black spray paint or whatever color spray paint you may have, and cover up this bare metal to help prevent any rusting later on down the road. inaudible 00:05:38 the same combination of hardware. We'll go ahead and feed it into our hole, going to make sure it drops all the way down. Go ahead and do that same thing on the other side. Next, we'll tighten everything down and then torque it to the specifications in the instructions. Be using a 22-millimeter socket. We'll do that with all remaining hardware. That'll do it for the look at and installation on the Curt Class V XD trailer hitch receiver, part number C15400 on our 2018 Ram 3500 Cab and Chassis.

great product, pricing is very fair, delivery was timely. only problem is packaging, the box was completely ripped to pieces. Very thin box material. For something this heavy the box should be banded. Lucky that someone taped the hardware to the hitch. 528622

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Fit and Compatibility of Deep Drop Trailer Hitch for a M35A2C
  • I spoke to my contact at Curt and he informed me that the Curt hitch # C15317 center section measures 31-5/8 inches. The center to center mounting hole width with the flanges attached is 34-7/8 inches. He also informed me that the flanges on the # C15317 can be reversed if it helps to accommodate your M35A2C. This hitch will have a drop from mounting point to top of the receiver tube of 7-1/4 inches. Fitment cannot be confirmed since they have not performed a test fit on the vehicle. The...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution & Hitch Extender to Towing a Camper and Trailer with 2015 Chevy 3500
  • For your situation, I cannot recommend you use a hitch extender like # RP11004 and a longer weight distribution shank, but I do have a couple solutions for you. A hitch extender like # RP11004, will not be able to support the weight of your trailer and weight distribution system. This extender maxes out at 650lbs TW when used with a weight distribution system which we have figured your trailer alone will have max 600-900lbs when loaded and you have to account for the weight of the system...

  • What Does Hitch Not Rated for Use with Weight Distribution Mean for a Trailer Hitch
  • A trailer hitch that is not rated for use with weight distribution means that the hitch cannot be used with any type of weight distribution system because of its bracket design (short brackets on this hitch) and they could have also found in testing that it does not hold up well with weight distribution. This hitch is also made for cab and chassis models of the 2003 GMC Sierra so if you have a regular pickup this hitch will not fit. If you do have a cab and chassis model then Curt trailer...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Truck
  • I can help you find a hitch that will fit your 34 inch outside to outside measurement on your 2016 Chevy 3500 HD. It sounds like you have a Cab and Chassis style Chevy, because of the 34 inch wide outside to outside frame. I have listed the trailer hitches below that will fit your vehicle, but the Reese RP45302 is not one of them. I also included a link on this page to take you directly to the page of the 5 hitches that will fit your vehicle for your convenience. 2 inch receiver...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2006 Ford F-350 Cab and Chassis with Utility Bed
  • Since your truck frame is 34 inches from outside to outside that means that it originally was a cab and chassis truck. I have a solution for you, but it will require you drill some holes in the frame. The Curt hitch part # C15400 has a drop of 6-1/4 inches from the mounting surface, but since it was designed to bolt up to a Chevy truck the install holes won't match up. But you can easily drill new ones to match the hitch. The mounting holes are Rear most mounting holes are 30.12...

  • Hitch and Brake Controller for 2000 GMC Sierra 3500 Pickup
  • The 2000 model year was a split year for GMC pickups so checking hitch fits can be tricky. Curt Class V hitch # C15400 fits only the cab-and-chassis versions from 2001 forward; it does not fit your 2000 GMC Sierra 3500 pickup. If your 2000 Sierra pickup has a 10-inch deep-drop bumper you can use Curt Class V hitch # C15317. If it has a standard or step bumper you can use Class V hitch # C15325. If your Sierra has a factory 7-way you can install a trailer brake controller like the...

  • How Does a Curt Trailer Hitch Install on a 2012 Dodge Ram 4500 Cab and Chassis
  • In order to install Curt trailer hitch # C15800 on your 2012 Dodge Ram 4500 cab and chassis model you will have to drill into the frame because, like you have said, there are no holes in the frame already. The rivet that is in the rear most part of the frame also will come out and get replaced by a bolt. Installation is very similar to hitch # C15400 (just the capacities are different) and I have linked the instructions for it for you to view. The hitches install with 3 bolts on each...
