Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 - Curt

Today on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the CURT custom fit class five commercial duty trailer hitch receiver, part number C15860. Now this is what our hitch is going to look like installed. As you can see, this is a really nice, heavy duty, great-looking hitch as far as I'm concerned. It has more of a matte finish to it than what you're going to see with a lot of other standard hitches. See our really thick, really sturdy safety chain connection points here, reinforced receiver tube opening here. It's got a nice flush look to it there.

This is going to be the hitch that you're going to want for those really heavy duty towing needs. This has a 2,700 pound tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force you can put here at your receiver tube opening. It offers a 20,000 gross trailer weight rating. That would be the total weight of your trailer, then anything that you might load up on it.

This is superior strength, superior durability. It's going to make those heavy duty hauling situations much easier. We're not going to have to worry so much about our hitch fatiguing. Now the hitch is rated for weight distribution so you can use spring bars, torsion bars. However, your weight ratings, they're going to stay the same. Here on the side you'll see our hitch pinhole.

We want to be sure that we use class five-rated accessories. We want to make sure they're rated up to the weight capacities our hitch can handle. As you can see, there's going to be plenty of room there. If you want to use standard hitch pins, locking hitch pins or anti-rattle devices, I don't think you'll have any issue at all there. Reinforcement plate here on the top is going to add to that rigidity and make sure we have a nice strong hitch that's ready for the job. Now a couple measurements that are helpful for selecting ball mounts, bike racks, or hitch cargo carriers will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening we've got about 22".

Then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 1/2". Now to begin our installation we lowered down the spare tire here in the rear. Then what we're going to do is take out two bolts. We've got the one located right here on the bottom of the frame rail that will be the furthest back position, and the one located right up here on the side. That's going to be the bottom of our bumper support. Get these backed out. We'll be sure to do that on both sides. Now with those out of the way we're ready to get our hitch raised up into position. Now this is a heavy hitch so it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you out. We're going to use our provided hex-head bolts. These are going to go right up through the hitch and right into that rear hole that we just pulled that bolt down out of. You'll see the conical tooth washers on there. We want those to be facing up toward our hitch. Get that lined up. Want to be sure you get three or four good turns on there to start it. Then we'll just let our hitch rest in position there. Now for the forward attachment point we want to take one of our carriage bolts, one of our spacer blocks. We're going to drop it right down through that slot. There's already a hole instruction frame for us, which makes it nice. Then we can thread on one of the flange nuts just like that. We'll do that on both sides. Now we're going to take one of the shorter carriage bolts. You'll see we've got two square holes on each sides of the hitch. We want to place that through, take one of our side plates and place that over the bolt. The square holes there will go over the bolts. Then we thread on a flange nut. We do that for both locations. Then we can just take that existing bolt that we pulled out of the side and we'll thread that in. Now we'll go over to the driver side, do the same thing there. now we'll go through and snug up our hardware. Once we've got it torqued down on both sides we'll just need to look in the instructions, find the torque specifications listed there, and get all of our hardware torqued down appropriately. Now with everything torqued down appropriately, that's going to complete our installation of the CURT custom fit commercial duty class five trailer hitch receiver, part number C15860, on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

I didn't think this required drilling, but perhaps I mis-read the description. It does require drilling 2 holes. Probably is you have to lift this 100lb monster into place to mark where the holes go, THEN pull it out of the way to drill the holes straight. After you put it back, you find that the 1/2 hole they tell you to drill doesn't fit the 9/16" hardware they sent. Of course 9/16" is bigger than most folks have in their drill set, so I spent an hour with a dremel to make it big enough. If the instructions were correct this would have taken half the time. The receiver itself does look the business. 174861

Mounting took a bit longer than I thought. Drilling the 2 holes in the frame at an angle was challenging but I was successful and am very pleased with the Curt Class V hitch. I just wish GM would have installed the class V because the 2500 HD trucks are designed for towing to begin with. This will add value to the truck when selling it in the future. The installed height of the OEM was about 16-1/4". The Curt Hitch was about 1" lower. I will be using my Blue Ox BXW2000 hitch SWAYPRO reciever. 660717

Overall I am very happy with this hitch. I think it is more sturdy and safer pulling heavy loads. Unfortunately there was more work involved in installation then the directions revealed. The hitch required 2 new holes to be drilled in each frame rail. To complicate this, one hole in the passenger side frame was on the edge of one of the bolt holes that mount the spare tire shield. This hole required the use of a drill bit and a rotary file. 611214

This hitch was easy to install myself with the help of a floor jack. I was very impressed with the etrailer website and how fast the hitch was delivered. I will be doing more business here for sure. 175407

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • 36 Inch Hitch Extender for a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
  • I do have options for you but you cannot install two of part # C45796 together to get a total of 36". Doing so would completely diminish your trailer hitches weight capacity. The most cost effective solution I have for you would be to use part # RP45292 for 24"-34" or part # RP45018 for 41"-48". However, both of these options will require a 2-1/2" trailer hitch receiver like the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C15860. The best solution I have for you to get a 36" hitch extension...

  • Comparing Draw-Tite Class V Trailer Hitch to Curt Class V for 2019 GMC 3500 Long Bed
  • The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V - 2-1/2" # DT45511 does require drilling for installation. It also requires the OEM factory bumper and brackets and allows the full size spare tire. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V Commercial Duty - 2-1/2" # C15860 does not require drilling and does not require the OEM bumper or brackets. It is rated for the same capacities. Both are great hitches, you will just take more time installing the Draw-Tite...

  • Fit of Adjustable Ball Mount on 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500
  • The ball mount you referenced, Fastway Self-Locking Adjustable Aluminum Ball Mount # DTALBM7025, fits 2-1/2-inch hitches and its locking pins will engage with the hitch pin holes on a 2-1/2-inch receiver tube. If you have a similar ball mount made for a 2-inch hitch, such as # DTALBM6600, its pins will not extend out far enough to engage with the holes on a 2-1/2-inch receiver. You cannot use a reducer sleeve like # 58102 to use a 2-inch ball mount in a 2-1/2-inch hitch. For reference...

  • Hitch, Hitch Extension and Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500
  • Here are the towing components you will need. For a hitch you will need a Class V hitch with a 2-1/2 inch opening like the Curt Trailer Hitch # C15860. This hitch has more than enough capacity for your trailer even when reduced by 50 percent. For a 24 inch extension you will want the Titan Hitch Box Extension # RP45292. This also would have enough capacity for you trailer and would be compatible with weight distribution. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to...

  • Will Curt Class V Trailer hitch C15860 Fit a 2016 GMC Sierra 2500HD
  • I checked with Curt and hitch # C15860 is listed in their application guide as a fit for your 2016 GMC Sierra 2500. The application guide is not the same as the fit guide. The application guide is more up to date and updated frequently. The fit guide on the other hand takes some time to catch up. I have linked a video showing an example installation of this hitch for you. The recommended ball mount for this hitch is # C45456. It takes a ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank such as # 63840.

  • Would Curt Hitch # C15860 Fit 2011 Chevy Silverado 3500HD and Increase Towing Capacity
  • There really isn't a way to safely increase the towing capacity of a vehicle as it's more than just the hitch of the vehicle's weight rating. The Curt hitch part # C15860 is a fit for your 2011 Chevy Silverado 3500HD and has pretty high towing capacity of 20,000 lbs so it would handle the weight of a 14k trailer. If your truck has a 14k capacity based on how it is equipped it would work well for you.

The options include some Class III hitches, but primarily the heavier-duty Class IV and Class V varieties. For a 6-1/2-foot bed truck, for example, you can use Curt hitch # C15860 which offers a tongue weight rating of 2700-lbs and a trailer weight rating of 20,000-lbs.

  • For a 24 inch hitch extender the best option is the Curt part # C45048 cut down to the 24 inch length. This has a capacity of 8,000 lb trailer weight when used with a WD system like you mentioned. Since this is the only extender option that's going to work we have to build everything around it. This means you'll need to install a 2-1/2 inch hitch on your 2013 GMC Sierra 2500. For that you'd want the Curt part # C15860 which is a fit for your truck. Due to the weight of your camper you'll...

  • Troubleshooting Exhaust Rattle with a Curt Hitch on a 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500
  • Exhaust rattle is fairly common problem with hitch installs that can easily be fixed. Since exhaust systems are designed for slight movements they don't always sit in the same spot on every vehicle, so when a hitch is designed for a vehicle the hitch might sit close and not rattle on one vehicle, but on another vehicle the clearances might be different and the exhaust might hit the hitch. • The 4,400 lb tandem axles you have are supporting a very similar weight and trying to get these to support exactly the same weight consistently would be pretty tedious and not particularly beneficial. The 220 lb difference is perfectly fine so I would concentrate on making sure you tow as level as possible, which is going to be the best thing for you to for even suspension wear. That said, the inside of the receiver should only measure 2-1/2 inches, and even taking into account some variance hitch by hitch, one that measures 2-3/4 inches is particularly large. It seems...
